Cele points finger at 'Nigerians in Sandton'

Dec 7, 2009 11:23 PM | By SALLY EVANS

National Police Commissioner Bheki Cele has blamed Nigerians for being behind drug syndicates that have infiltrated South Africa.

Speaking at the launch of a festive-season crime-fighting campaign in Sandton yesterday, he said: "South Africa should not be the space for criminals. We are being targeted by international criminals, who are [making] factories of drugs in South Africa. They all come from Nigeria and live in Sandton."

Deputy Police Minister Fikile Mbalula warned criminals they were facing their graves.

Cele's statements follow a drug bust at a farm in Brakpan, east of Johannesburg, last weekend in which drugs to the value of R1.2-million, equipment and chemicals worth R1-billion were discovered.

The factory, police said, was established by Nigerians.

Two weeks ago, police bust a major syndicate operating in Gauteng and North West, and arrested 16 men.

Cele said the kingpin was a Nigerian national living in Sandton.

He warned that the police would be using "deadly force" during the festive season.

On the soccer World Cup he said: "We are working with Interpol and police agencies from all the 2010 countries so we understand their hooligans. Anybody who thinks South Africa is a haven for thugs, stay home, boetie."

Adele Kirsten, executive director of the Centre for the Study of Violence and Reconciliation, said it had no research that backed Cele's statements about Nigerians.

"We have no research to show that foreign nationals take part in crime any more than locals do. We could not verify that."

Mbalula said it was the "civic duty" of all South Africans to fight crime alongside the police.

Celebrities and business stakeholders pledged their support for the Crime Line Festive Season Safety Campaign yesterday.

The Nigerian consulate did not respond to the commissioner's statements.

Don't forget to read the comments, some are already promoting violence!

Can you believe this freaking slowpoke said this about Nigerians? I know that our countrymen are heavily involved in the drug trade there, but this guy should be sacked from his position because he is blatantly promoting xenohphobia and making statements that have not been statistically proven. This slowpoke is more likely than not just another unqualified lazy South African who got the position just because he knew someone in power. I also think this man is jealous of Nigerian success because there are probably more Nigerians living in Sandton than there are black South Africans. The Nigerian consulate in Johannesburg is being quiet on the issue but I urge ALL Nigerians to contact the consulate in South Africa to complain about these UNSUBSTANTIATED claims. Contact details:

we should not blame the SA police, there is truth in what he is saying, so instead of blaming him we should look at ourselves first. every where u have more than 10 Nigerians in foreign land, crime is by the corner. the Nigerian ambassador in china could not hide it anymore came out and said 90% of crimes committed by African in china is done by us? look at the way Libya are deporting my brothers. WHY NIGERIANS? is there something that attracts us to crime everywhere we go? we should change. we don't have anything for this countries to be jealous of! so let us accept the fact it is our fault that we are looked at as criminals because of the activities of my brothers?

How can all nigerian be drug dealers. ? it is not possible. Some of us , have never seen drug before in our life. Look at one time, I posted the pictures of crack head. Most nigerian would be seen the effect of drug for the first time. Drug and nigerian society do not mix. The percentage of nigerian using drug is low 0.0000001 % of the total population.

Do is not common in nigeria society by drug dealer use nigerian as transit point because of bad immigration policy. Nigeria is just a transit point. If they make it impossible at the airport it would stop. I do not think they produce drugs in Nigeria.

If nigerian knows how , then we would have problem.

I believe the story and the Police Chief's opinion.
Its even more mind-boggling in Germany,Spain,Holland and Austria.
In Landstrasse Prison in vIENNA,there are 893 nigerian inmates and the whole prison can only take 950 people.I hope i'm not be tribalist if i tell you that all the 9ja inmates in this particular prison were convicted of the same crime(drugs, drugsrelated crime)and they are all IBOS.

Germany with its high % of police officers faces the same invasion by Nigerian drug criminals too.

So If anybody carrying naija passport is harassed in any airport in the world,we shouldnt be annoyed.

Guys, this police chief is basically saying ALL Nigerians in Sandton are involved with drug trade- there is nothing to prove this- there are many hard working Nigerians living in Sandton that have nothing to do with those things. undecided

yet they will come out openly and highlight n magnify our small crimes and u guys will be brainwashed into helping them run ourselves down, y then r u surprised when a pedophile will walk thru an airport calmly but u when be 9ja will receive harassment?
honestly we need 2 wake up to this crap that these countries r tryna pull.

Again the South Africans are getting it all wrong,
Personally i think Bheki Cele has been watching to much TV with particular reference to District 9. No wonder he is delusioned about Nigerians.

Interesting story.

I live in SA and this reminds me of sometimes last year when I went to the general hospital of the town I live for medical checks. The nurse on duty asked me for my ID and I told her I am a non south african, so I can only give her my passport.

She asked me of my country of origin and I told her I am a Nigerian. The next thing I heard was "hmmm you must be rich". I was kind of amused with that statement. I asked what gave that impression, and she just said "because you sell drugs".

I was shocked.I retrieved my passport from her and lectured her that not all Nigerians sell drugs, there are many of us working legally in SA and we do work hard to earn our money.

The truth is that is this is how all of us are perceived and the reasons are not far fetched. Our brothers are too involved in criminal activities here. Its always all over the news.Just within the last few weeks, two massive drug syndicates were smashed by the police and Nigerians were behind them.

I am not saying only Nigerians are involved but certainly we are high up there and it is really affecting all Nigerians including those who are earning their money through sweat and hard work.

There is no need to be defensive and hurl insults on SA police, instead we have to accept there is an element of truth in what they are saying and find a way stop these criminals who are hell bent on destroying the image of our great country.

So long!

We Nigerians should stop raising unnecessary sentiments whenever we are accused of criminality. I agree that there are so many Nigerians doing legit business all over the world but a small fraction is tainting our IMAGE!  This small fraction, because of our population, is a large number of people when compared with other nations!

Just imagining the size of his mouth.
He must have giant teeth and a really cheesy grin too.

Anyway, though it is politically immature of the S.A official to make such statements, nigerians tend to make the loudest noise in what ever sphere they find themselves.
This creates the impression that only they are in participation in whatever.
I can imagine every loud roucous involving a nigerian in that place.

In every single country in the world you will find nigerians in all sorts of nefarious activities.
Oyibo go soon device light wey dey attack dark skin pigment to wipe una.

In as much as I agree that some Nigerian disgraces us all over the world by their various criminal activities. I strongly find it very unfair to pick on Nigerians for establishment of Drug factories in SA.
That some Nigerian are involved, possible.
But for SA that has a record of one of the highest violent crime rate in the world, You and I definitely know that the Leaders of such established Drug factories will be South Africans.
Let them give us names of those involved and not just accuse Nigerians most of who are Professionals, missionaries and law abiding citizen all over SA.
It is so easy for any lazy policechief anywhere in the world to rise up and accuse Nigerian of being the brain behind any criminal activity even when proper investigation and fact have not been established.
Nigerians in SA everywhere in the world should therefore learn to all rise up to fight against such practices as they turn out to generalise all Nigerians as criminals.
Give us the facts on the Nigerian involved in the Drug business and we will all (Nigerians)  crucify them with you.
But Cele, please keep quiet and stop accusing all NIGERIAN in Sandton as Drug Dealers if you dont have your facts. angry

RAINBOW NATION?
24% of South Africans do not speak to people of other races on a typical day
46% "never socialise" with people of other races in their own homes or friends' homes
39% find people of other races "untrustworthy"
59% said they found it "difficult to understand the customs and ways" of people of other races
