The final wall of the sealed burial chamber of the 18-year-old Boy King Tutankhamun of Egypt was breached for the first time in 3,000 years on February 17, 1923. Archaeologist Howard Carter whispered breathlessly that he could see `things, wonderful things' as he gazed in awe at the treasures of Tutankhamun. As Carter, together with fanatical Egyptologist Lord Carnarvon, looked at the treasures of gold, gems, precious stones, and other priceless relics, they ignored the dire warning written all those centuries ago to ward off grave robbers. "Death will come to those who disturb the sleep of the pharaohs." But for Carter and Lord Carnarvon, who had financed the dig culminating in history's greatest archaeological find, all thoughts of curses and hocus-pocus were forgotten as they revelled in the joy of the victorious end to the dig. On April 5, 1923, just 47 days after breaching the chamber into Tutankhamun's resting place, Carnarvon died in agony - the victim, apparently, of an infected mosquito bite. At the moment of his death in the Continental Hotel, Cairo, the lights in the city went out at the same time and stayed off for some minutes. Thousands of miles away in England, at Lord Carnarvon's country house, his dog began baying and howling, an unnatural lament which shocked the domestic staff deep in the middle of the night, until the tormented creature turned over and died. Two days after Carnarvon's death, the mummified body of the pharaoh was examined and a blemish was found on his left cheek exactly in the position of the mosquito bite on Carnarvon's face. Perhaps this could have been passed off as coincidence had it not been for the bizarre chain of deaths that were to follow. Shortly after Carnarvon's demise, another archaeologist, Arthur Mace, a leading member of the expedition, went into a coma at the Hotel Continental after complaining of tiredness. He died soon afterwards, leaving the expedition medic and local doctors baffled. The deaths continued. A close friend of Carnarvon, George Gould, made the voyage to Egypt when he learned of his fate. Before leaving the port to travel to Cairo he looked in at the tomb. The following day he collapsed with a high fever; twelve hours later he was dead. Radiologist Archibald Reid, a man who used the latest X-ray techniques to determine the age and possible cause of death of Tutankhamun, was sent back to England after complaining of exhaustion. He died soon after landing. Carnarvon's personal secretary, Richard Bethell, was found dead in bed from heart failure four months after the discovery of the tomb. The casualties continued to mount. Joel Wool, a leading British industrialist of the time, visited the site and was dead a few months later from a fever which doctors could not comprehend. Six years after the discovery,12 of those present when the tomb was opened, were dead. Within a further seven years, only two of the original team of excavators were still alive. Lord Carnarvon's half-brother apparently took his own life while temporarily insane, and a further 21 people connected in some way with the dig, were also dead. While countless Egyptologists and academics have tried to debunk the legend of the curse as pure myth, others have continued to fall victim to its influence... Mohammed Ibrahim, Egypt's director of antiquities, in 1966 argued with the government against letting the treasures from the tomb leave Egypt for an exhibition in Paris. He pleaded with the authorities to allow the relics to stay in Cairo because he had suffered terrible nightmares of what would happen to him if they left the country. Ibrahim left a final meeting with the government officials, stepped out into what looked like a clear road on a bright sunny day, was hit by a car and died instantly. Perhaps even more bizarre was the case of Richard Adamson who by 1969 was the sole surviving member of the 1923 expedition. Adamson had lost his wife within 24 hours of speaking out against the curse. His son broke his back in an aircraft crash when he spoke out again. Still skeptical, Adamson, who had worked as a security guard for Lord Carnarvon, defied the curse and gave an interview on British television, in which he still said that he did not believe in the curse. Later that evening, as he left the television studios, he was thrown from his taxi when it crashed, a swerving lorry missed his head by inches, and he was put in the hospital with fractures and bruises. It was only then that the stoic Mr. Adamson was forced to admit: "Until now I refused to believe that my family's misfortunes had anything to do with the curse. But now I am not so sure." Perhaps the most amazing manifestation of the curse came in 1972 when the treasures of the tomb were transported to London for a prestigious exhibition at the British Museum. Victim number one was Dr. Gamal Mehrez, Ibrahim's successor in Cairo as the director of antiquities. He scoffed at the legend, saying that his whole life had been spent in Egyptology and that all the deaths and misfortune through the decades had been the result of `pure coincidence'. He died the night after supervising the packaging of the relics for transport to England by a Royal Air Force plane. The crew members of that aircraft suffered death, injury, misfortune, and disaster in the years that followed their cursed flight. Flight Lieutenant Rick Laurie died in 1976 from a heart attack. His wife declared: "It's the curse of Tutankhamun - the curse has killed him." Ken Parkinson, a flight engineer suffered a heart attack each year at the same time as the flight aboard the Britannia aircraft which brought the treasures to England until a final fatal one in 1978. Before their mission to Egypt, neither of the servicemen had suffered any heart trouble and had been pronounced fit by military doctors. During the flight, Chief Technical Officer Ian Lansdown kicked the crate that contained the death mask of the boy king, "I've just kicked the most expensive thing in the world," he quipped. Later, on disembarking from the aircraft on another mission, a ladder mysteriously broke beneath him and the leg he had kicked the crate with was badly broken. It was in plaster for nearly six months. Flight Lieutenant Jim Webb, who was aboard the aircraft, lost everything he owned after a fire devastated his home. A steward, Brian Rounsfall, confessed to playing cards on the sarcophagus of Tutankhamun on the flight home and suffered two heart attacks. The mystery remain Source: William W. Lace (2008). Former Oyo State Governor, Senator Rashidi Ladoja, speaks to some journalists, including ADEMOLA BABALOLA, as part of events to celebrate his 75th birthday. He talks about his impeachment in 2006 when he was a governor, Nigeria’s 59th independence anniversary and other issues You’re 75 years old now, how has the journey been? There are successes and failures, there are triumphs and disappointments. And on the long run, I will say that I’m grateful to God that I can claim more triumphs than disappointments. When you get to a stage in life, you ask yourself what is important, then it is not your successes and triumphs that are important but leaving the world better than you met it. Nigeria will be 59 on October 1, how has the country fared? I’m disappointed that we are where we are, where we cannot feed ourselves, and ensure quality education for our children again. When you see where Dubai (UAE) is now, see the Asian tigers (Hong Kong, Singapore, South Korea and Taiwan), you will ask your question why? There is nothing to celebrate. As a businessman, did you experience disappointments? Of course, there are disappointments because you expect certain things to go this way but due to factors that are not within your control, it could be a change in policy, you meet failures. You could think that you should go this way, and somebody would say you should go that way and you might have no choice but to go that way. So those are the things that can bring disappointments. Share some examples By now, I think Nigeria should be self-sufficient in food production; that is the most important thing to any human being after air and water. After that comes shelter. Are we self-sufficient? I’m not even talking of quality of food but availability. I mean, Nigerians are hungry today. If you look at it from the angle that Nigeria has got this vast land and we cannot exploit it properly. That is disappointment; Nigeria has petroleum but cannot refine what the country uses with all the engineers that we have trained. Nowadays, I hear about the brain drain of doctors, which means you are training them for the world and not your own use. Disappointments about Nigeria and Africa are worse than I can think. More in Home Though I raped, I’d not allow my daughter to be raped –Man arrested for raping a 14-year-old How my five-year-old daughter was kidnapped, dumped in a hotel –Father Commercial motorcyclists stab car owner to death in Abuja Attacks against Ambode will continue to fail, group says Manhood of my daughter’s rapist should be fed to dogs –Father of Gombe rape victim When you were Oyo State governor, you couldn’t manage Chief Lamidi Adedibu and he championed your impeachment, why? I could manage him. So what happened? I managed him. Everybody knew that between me and Baba, we had a sort of good rapport. If Baba had views on six issues and I was able to take Baba out of the groove, by the time he came back, Baba might drop five for me. That was how close we were. During the campaign, the major crisis we had was the popular opinion that ‘Ladoja is good but will Adedibu allow him work?’ I used to say, I am a father and a grandfather. I have built my life, if I am elected, the buck stops on my table. You see, even if Baba was good, what about the people that surrounded Baba? On inauguration day, they went to pull down Chief Obafemi Awolowo’s statue in front of Government House; that was the first crisis we had. They took it to Baba’s place the same day. There was a finance board in Bodija, and the agreement was that the contractor would collect toll until their money was paid before they would turn it over to the government. Baba’s boys said the government that put it there had gone and that they were now in charge. Then, some of Baba’s boys were going to Bola Ige International Market to collect protection fees from traders and in some cases, when you refused to pay, they broke into their shops. They were allocating spaces along the roads for people to be putting containers there and destroying the master plan. In some cases, some of Baba’s boys would go to the forest and arrest people and collect money from them. Sometimes, they harassed and imprisoned them in their homes. No sane government would allow such things to go on. So that was where we started having issues because most of Baba’s boys believed that they were in government, therefore there was no law. So, it was not that I didn’t manage Baba. I know that Baba could talk but he could not disturb government work and it was the same Baba that would encourage them. So Baba just capitalised on this. I have said it many times that 13 of Baba and (Otunba Christopher) Alao-Akala couldn’t have impeached me. The rule of impeachment is that you must have two-thirds majority in the House of Assembly and I knew there was no way I could have less than one-third. It opened the way for selfish people who just wanted money and there were so many negotiations, but there was one (thing) that actually made the impeachment possible, it was (Chief Olusegun) Obasanjo’s third term agenda. Obasanjo knew there was no way I would be around and the House of Assembly would pass an amendment to the constitution, allowing a third term for the President. That was why Ladoja had to go. Just that? And I also made a mistake, maybe it was a mistake or maybe it wasn’t. I knew Obasanjo before I became Oyo State governor. I used to visit him in Ota after he left government and we were very close, so when I heard about third term agenda, I told Baba if it was true and he asked who told me. I said does it really matter who told me? I said it’s a question of whether it’s true. He said it was not true and I said thank God. And I said ‘Baba, I would have said maybe you don’t know God. I said God made it possible for you to be President for eight years and this is a Presidency you were not qualified for.’ He said, ‘not qualified, am I not a Nigerian or was I not of age’? I said ‘no, Baba, you know that in a democratic regime, presidency is meant for politicians and you are not a politician, they came to call you. I said there was a time you asked me what (Shehu Musa) Yar’Adua was looking for in government (and) what did he forget in the Government House? Secondly, with presidential system of government, you must have lots of your own money for election. You just came out of prison and had no money. And with all those minuses, God said you would be the President for eight years, let God be the one who would decide the next president.’ He said ‘thank you very much, I appreciate it.’ Didn’t you study his countenance to know he was not pleased? I had said what I wanted to say. Yoruba people say if you and your friends talk in the room and come out with smiles on your faces, you have not told yourselves the truth. He knew I told him the truth and I was convinced I told him the truth. At the end of it, he also said he didn’t even ask for a third term, which is not true. He did. So when I got home in the evening, the then Ogun State Governor, Gbenga Daniel, called and asked what I came to Ota to discuss with Obasanjo. I said I discussed third term agenda with him. He said ‘oh God, you have pinched Baba on his sore, Baba said he would turn you to a nobody.’ I said ‘if God allows him’. He said okay we are going to have council of state meeting in Abuja, please come early so that we can discuss and I can give you more details. So I went and he gave me all the details and asked me to apologise to Baba (Obasanjo) and I said I would go in the evening but when I went in the evening, (Otunba Johnson) Fasawe was there. Baba didn’t allow me talk. He said I have told you Rashidi, I will turn you to a nobody. He was going and Fasawe was running after him, trying to tell him he shouldn’t have said that and I answered him, if God permits you, sir. It would not have mattered so much if I had not lost some of my staff members. We went to Abuja for something, we were returning home and we had an accident on the way. That dampened my spirit. Two brilliant young men with wives and children died; those were my political staff members. Three or four others that were civil servants also died. And when the thing got to that level, people and other governors that came said we should go and beg Baba so we went on January 10, 2006, which happened to be Sallah day. We decided to meet in Abeokuta; we didn’t take (Ayodele) Fayose along because he was Baba’s ‘son’; I, (Olusegun) Agagu, (Olagunsoye) Oyinlola and Daniel went to him. They knelt down so I had to kneel down too, Oyinlola is a very good orator, he presented a very brilliant case, Agagu supported him. Daniel and I didn’t talk. He said well, Rashidi, go and resign. I said no and asked why I should do that. He said if you don’t resign, you will be removed. I said nobody can do it because they cannot get two-thirds and he said two-thirds my foot and got up. Daniel ran after him so three of us sat down and we were talking. Then Prince Bola Ajibola (SAN) came in and said what is wrong with you people, you are leaders in your own right. It is not every time that you run away from a fight. He said I had gone to see Segun to plead with him to leave you in peace because you have not done anything wrong. That in fact, everybody was praising your government, and that he also knew that they were praising my government, my education policy was good and I was not corrupt. I said thank you. People saw you as a weakling when you returned to office because in 2007, Alao-Akala got the governorship ticket of your party. The judgment was given on December 7, 2006, which was a Thursday. I think they had their primary on December 9. I didn’t have the opportunity to take part in it and Baba didn’t want me to. That I knew because when the judgment came, I tried to get Obasanjo and he was not available. I spoke to the chief of staff who said thank God you called me, let there be no jubilation. I said what am I jubilating about, I had issued a statement that I was not the winner, the Nigerian constitution was the winner and that I would reconcile all parties. I said I was not coming back to fight. He said before the end of the day, he would make a statement. After the Court of Appeal (judgment), the statement they made was that because the case was going to the Supreme Court, they should allow the Supreme Court to decide even though they knew that it was a declarative judgment. If not, we would have come back earlier than when we did. They went quickly to appeal. The Supreme Court did not delay in the determination of the appeal. They decided it and said they were going to give reasons on January 12, which coincided with the day I was impeached. But when the judgment was given around 6pm, they said the Inspector General of Police should assist Ladoja to get back to his office, that they had accepted the judgment. When they said that, I now called Baba to say thank you very much for accepting the judgment. He said, no Rashidi, don’t make a mistake, I only directed the IG to give you protection so that what happened to Funsho Williams would not happen to you. Don’t go back to office. I asked why. He said because the court was in the hands of Alao-Akala, they didn’t tell Alao-Akala to give the court back to Ladoja. If you want the court back, you have to go back to court. I said that’s alright sir. The following day (Chief Niyi) Akintola (SAN) was on AIT, saying, ‘Can you imagine the President saying this? The President is like an illiterate and this and that.’ The chief of staff called and said why did you have to tell your lawyer what you discussed with Baba? I said Baba told me I should go back to court, I don’t know how to go to court except through my lawyers. While that one was happening, Baba was scheming that they should go to court and bring anything that looked like an injunction, even from the Customary Court, he would ask the IG to take action. That was why they went to High Court. When the court was rowdy, the judge said the status quo should remain. Alao-Akala said the status quo meant that he was in charge, but I said we have already taken over since the judgment was pronounced. I had already dissolved Alao-Akala’s cabinet and asked the permanent secretaries to take over. I didn’t need to get to the secretariat before I started giving orders but luckily it didn’t deteriorate because later on I was told that nobody knew what was wrong with Baba. Baba became very hostile and the establishment took over. The IG gave instructions to the AIG, Tunji Alapinni, to come to Ibadan. Tunji called me and asked if I was on my way, I said no, I was still in Lagos. In fact, I had not even had my bath. He said he had been given order that by 12pm, if Alao-Akala didn’t leave the office, he should flush him out. Then I advised him, I said, ‘Don’t flush him out, call him and tell him that this is the order you have. He is a policeman too; he knows what it means when the IGP gives an instruction.’ That was why Alao-Akala quickly carried his load and left the secretariat. https://punchng.com/thirteen-obasanjos-alao-akalas-couldnt-have-impeached-me-ladoja/ 2 Likes 1 Share |

Nigerian engineer leading Scotland’s 5G revolution CLOSE-UP: Yusuf Sambo, the Nigerian engineer leading Scotland’s 5G revolution Much of the global market in 2019 has been driven by trade wars between the United States and The Peoples Republic of China. President Donald Trump signed an executive order that no US company should use telecommunications equipment made by technology companies that pose national security risks. The ban was targeted at Huawei, the Chinese tech company leading 5G revolution in Asia. Experts say the US may lose as much as $500 billion, if China beats America to the best 5G technology — highlighting how important 5G will be in the years ahead. The countries that lead the 5G revolution will earn billions of dollars, and greatly improve their economies, and drive global change — one of such countries is the United Kingdom. According to Nicola Sturgeon, the first woman to become the first minister of Scotland, the country is aiming to be the 5G leader in the United Kingdom. She says 5G could enable Scotland to add about £17 billion to GDP by 2035 and create 160,000 jobs. At the heart of Scotland’s 5G revolution is Nigeria’s Yusuf Abudulrahmam Sambo! WHO IS YUSUF SAMBO? Yusuf Abdulrahman Sambo is a research associate and the 5G-SON (self-organised network) testbed lead at the University of Glasgow, UK. Sambo was born in 1988 in Kaduna. He hails from Ikara local government, Kaduna state. He is the son of Abdulrahman Sambo, former acting executive secretary of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS). The building blocks of his sterling career were laid at Command Children School, Abuja, where he had his primary education, and Zaria Academy, Shika, where he learnt at the secondary education level. He would go on to Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Zaria, where he graduated in 2010 with a second-class upper degree in electrical engineering. By 2011, a year after graduating from ABU, Sambo already completed his master’s degree in Mobile and Satellite Communications at the University of Surrey (with distinction and two publications). Born to a medical doctor, who remains his role model, Sambo says his love for IT was encouraged by his father, who introduced him to the power of information and communications technology at a very young age. Sambo says his father, despite being a medical doctor by training, proofreads all his tech papers, and has always been interested in all he is research and academic works. PhD AT 27 Sambo completed his Ph.D. at 27 Following a distinct result during his masters at Surrey, Sambo got a full Ph.D. scholarship to work on a European Union-funded project on designing low electromagnetic emission future networks. He took the offer and started the Ph.D. But like everything with the golden fish, there is no hiding place; during his first year of Ph.D., he secured a mobility funding, to conduct research on mobile communications at the Texas A&M University in Qatar. At the age of 27, he completed his Ph.D. in Mobile Communications from the 5G Innovation Centre, reputed as the world’s largest academic research centre dedicated to next-generation mobile and wireless connectivity, at the University of Surrey in 2016. Sambo has since tapped into the centre’s vision to drive the fourth industrial revolution “to enable a world where everything is provided wirelessly to the end device by a fixed and mobile (converged) infrastructure that functions across the whole geography”. The internet of things! QUICKFACT: 5G could make it possible for a surgeon in India to carry out an operation on a patient in Australia or anywhere else in the world. It promises unbelievable medical advancements. LECTURER AT BAZE UNIVERSITY, ABUJA Sambo showcasing his student’s work at Baze University Despite being able to thrive anywhere in the world, Sambo returned to Nigeria upon graduation from Surrey, to transfer knowledge and give back to the Nigerian system. He worked briefly as a network engineer at Suburban Telecoms. He also lectured at Baze University, Abuja, between July 2016 and August 2017. He taught three modules to undergraduate students at the university, and would later become a supervisor of the Electrical Engineering Department at the university in Nigeria’s capital. His students made a Bluetooth controlled rover (picture above), which was demonstrated when Abdullahi Ganduje, governor of Kano state, visited the university. While at Baze, he co-founded Baze Youth Forum, a gathering for progressive youths to share ideas on issues of common interest. During this period, he also joined Fleissen & Company, an independent research and consulting company, as a consultant and worked on several projects. The company helps organisations to resolve complex problems in oil and gas, power, manufacturing, telecoms & technology (T&T), and water sectors. PRODUCED THE world’s first 5G popup network Sambo presenting 5G popup networks his team designed. This can be deployed in just two minutes Sambo is currently a research associate in the Communication, Sensing and Imaging Group of the University of Glasgow working on a £1.2 million EPSRC-funded project on designing autonomous and resilient emergency communication systems. His main research interests include EMF exposure reduction, radio resource management, energy efficiency, wireless sensor networks and device-to-device (D2D) communication. He has designed and built the first real-time 5G testbed dedicated to Self-Organised Networks (SON) in the UK which runs on general-purpose processors. At Glasgow, he has also produced several proofs-of-concept and demonstrated various 5G use-cases including a prototype for the world’s first popup network that can be deployed in less than 2 minutes for emergency communications and rural connectivity. His works have also made it possible to dynamically switch on/off 5G small cells by using machine learning for traffic prediction and multi-sensor fusion that result in over 20 percent energy savings. Following his array of excellent ideas and implementation, he was awarded the coveted Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) Impact Acceleration Account (IAA) grant for research on novel cooling systems capable of reducing the energy consumption of 5G networks by up to 50 percent. QUICKFACT: With 5G, you can download your favourite HD movie in f-o-u-r seconds! LEADING SCOTLAND’S 5G REVOLUTION Sambo next to Sturgeon, who shows off the world’s first book on verticals of 5G… The 31-year-old co-edited the world’s first books on the verticals of 5G and EMF radiation from future wireless communication, published by the prestigious Wiley-IEEE and the IET, respectively in 2019. In September 2018, the tech guru was engaged in an EPSRC-IAA funded research mobility to the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China to work on 5G testbed design. He leads the University of Glasgow research team on the widely-celebrated Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS)-funded 5G RuralFirst project. The project focuses on implementing a pop-up network for a healthcare use case in the Orkney Islands, Scotland. He recently coordinated a demo for the first minister of Scotland to showcase the research and successes of his team’s 5G plan. This was widely reported in the British media, including coverage by the BBC, STV, the Scotsman, Daily Record, the Herald and the Daily Mail. The Kaduna-born engineer currently has 21 publications in top-ranked peer-reviewed journals and conferences. He is also a reviewer for several top journals and conferences, serving on technical program and organising committees of many international conferences and workshops. When he is not revolutionalising 5G networks, he is supporting Arsenal Football Club, playing squash or traveling. Sambo says he loves food and is strangely a pen collector — he has about 100 pens from random places.https://www.thecable.ng/close-up-yusuf-sambo-the-nigerian-leading-scotlands-5g-revolution/amp
