Nairaland / General / A Second Epidemic Of Ebola That Is Separate From The One Ravaging West Africa. by Novabright: 7:55pm On Aug 27, 2014
On Aug. 26, the Democratic Republic of Congo informed the
World Health Organization, or WHO, that Ebola hemorrhagic
fever has shown up within its borders. So far, 13 people
have died. This country, also known as the DRC, is located
in central Africa.

Doctors without Borders has confirmed the news. (The
medical group’s French name is Médecins sans
Frontières). “We received confirmation on Sunday that four
of the samples our team took last week have tested positive
for Ebola virus,” Jeroen Beijnberger said. He is the group’s
medical leader in the DRC.

Doctors without Borders has worked in the DRC for more
than 30 years. It is now sending doctors, nurses and other
experts “to the epicenter of the outbreak,” the group said in
a statement on its website.

A pregnant woman living in Ikanamongo Villlage was the
first person to take sick in this new outbreak, according to
the WHO. She had butchered a wild animal that her
husband had killed for dinner. People in many parts of
Africa eat such wild game, known as bush meat. If those
animals are infected, the virus can be picked up by
touching their blood.

The woman developed a mystery disease and fever. She
died at a local clinic on August 11. A doctor, two nurses
and two other clinic employees had contact with her body
as it was prepared for release. Those workers took sick the
next week and have since died.

In all, 24 people became sick with a fever and illness
between July 28 and Aug. 18. Of the 11 who have survived,
all are now in quarantine, the WHO says. Neither the
pregnant woman nor any of her family and friends had
traveled to the West African countries currently battling an
enormous Ebola epidemic. That’s why the WHO is now
reporting that the DRC outbreak appears unrelated to that
one in West Africa.

As in the DRC outbreak, health-care workers have been on
the front lines of exposure in West Africa. And they have
paid a price for their heroic work. More than 240 of them
have already developed Ebola in Guinea, Liberia, Nigeria,
and Sierra Leone, the WHO announced on Aug. 25. Among
the estimated 1,427 people that Ebola killed so far in those
four countries, this year, 120 were health-care workers.

Ebola takes its name from where it first showed up in 1976.
That was near the Ebola River in what was then Zaire. In
1997, the country changed its name to the Democratic
Republic of Congo. The new infections showed up in a
remote region there known as Equateur province.

Despite the pharmacology exams that I've got today, seeking to know the source of this salt water bathing makes makes me break protocol to come online to see if there is any tangible source for the news spreading all over the place.
Who said it?
When was it said?
Why is it said?
what quantity of salt will do? if at all I will,
what happens if someone chooses not to?
why is it today?
Can it be tomorrow?
what about those who may not get to hear of it today?

Nigerians, let's be wise.

On a rather serious note, I think as Africans, we do not need to absorb all those things that the 'oyinbos' give us, hook line and sinker. They may be earlier in getting it or arriving at some achievements, but we master some arts more than they do. They gyri and sulci of our cerebrum are not for nothing.
Sometimes, those people that we think knows better, do get it wrong. See where they place us on the map. Chai!!!

See what CNN aired a while ago.

I think that's part of what you get for legalizing marijuana, gay marriage etc.
So many questions flooded my brain as I saw this error, placing Nigeria where it is not supposed to be.
What might have been the cause?
What would have happened if this they are to be the victim of the injustice?
Do they even have Editors, geographers, or anybody with a
brain
over there?
Are they trying to rearrange the planet?
They seriously need to go back to school and re-study
geography.
BTW, When did NIGER become NIGERIA?.
MAY BE THEIR EDITOR HAS EBOLA VIRUS NI.

Fellow Nairalanders, what do you think?

Nairaland / General / Sensitive Question For The Department Of State Security Service (dss) by Novabright: 4:05am On Aug 03, 2014
I read this on a friend's wall on Facebook and decided to share it here on NL

They were 35 pick up trucks in all – 35. The vehicles had
no number plates; therefore, there was no way on earth
you could identify the owners in the event of a road
mishap – even for the good of the occupants.

*Soldiers on patrol
In each of the trucks were at least eight fierce-looking,
heavily armed men. They brandished what someone called
General Purpose Machine Guns (GPMGs). Some of them
wore masks – what that could also mean is that if one of
them did anything untoward, no one would identify him.
And the men were dressed in black – black T-shirt, black
trousers, some in black masks; a few wearing face-caps.
The only form of commonality is that there was ‘DSS’
inscribed on the back of their T-shirts. This could be a
very good move; good if the men were heading to Sambisa
Forest to rescue the abducted girls of Chibok. But no!
They were not in the North-East, nor were they in Borno
State, Maiduguri or even Chibok.
They were in Oshogbo, the Osun State capital, on
Wednesday, July 30, 2014. Worse, still the men in black
shot in the air that Wednesday! Whatever that was
intended to achieve was not immediately understood.
Some issues need clearing here. Why would officers of the
state who are not in a war zone be in masks? Why would
officers of the state who are paid by tax payers drive in
unmarked cars? Why would officers of the state shoot
indiscriminately into the air like drunk Hamas or
Hezbollah fighters? Why? Why?? Why
The danger that is gradually creeping into the polity is yet
unknown. This is not about the All Progressive Congress,
APC, or about the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.
It is about decorum, national security and good sense.
Because Nigeria is a sophisticated nation where criminals
easily ape security operatives, let us bring the danger
home.
Imagine you are driving late in the evening on Benin/Ore
Road, or Ilesha/Akure Road, or Enugu/Awka Road or
Kaduna/Abuja Road.
Then imagine you see a group of men, 10 in number,
wearing black T-shirts, with the DSS inscription on them,
gun-wielding, and stopping vehicles at will for a
supposedly stop-and-search operations. With the excuse
of keeping national security, who would dare challenge
this group of 10 men? Who would dare ask them for their
ID cards?
Who would dare want to know the purpose of their action?
To complicate matters, if these men were armed robbers,
how would anyone know?
Even if officers and men of the Nigeria Police Force, NPF,
were driving along the same road, their warped form of
comradeship or camaraderie would just be a hollering
sound of ‘ALL CORRECT SIR’, or ‘OFFICERS ON DUTY’, or
some other such slogans. Still imagine some Boko Haram
members dressed in black T-shirt and wielding guns in a
convoy invading any of
the presumably safe states of South-East, South-South
and South-West and unleashing terror. How would the
DSS be absolved? Add the angle of the masks! So, who do
we arrest? Who would carry out the arrests? Just imagine
men in black with the DSS inscription attempting to arrest
another group of men in black with the same DSS
inscription!
Why is this inquisition necessary? This call to attention is
necessary because the job of national security requires
decorum and good sense. Granted, the Department of
State Services, DSS, needs the support of all Nigerians to
succeed in keeping everyone safe. Granted, there should
be no interference in the activities of the men of the DSS.
Yes, granted, Nigerians should support and be seen to be
supporting all security measures being put in place for
their safety. However, when the selfsame Nigerians meant
to be protected become victims of psychological terror by
the institution they fund, there is need for introspection.
The stories are well known of how members of the
Jama’atu Ahlis Sunna Lidda’awati wal-Jihad, which in
English translates to, “People Committed to the
Propagation of the Prophet’s Teachings and Jihad”, and
otherwise known as Boko Haram, invade villages and
towns wearing military uniforms, driving in a convoy of 10,
12 or 15 Hilux pick up trucks; and, thereafter, disappearing
into Sambisa Forest.
Now, if 35 pick up trucks can be sighted in Oshogbo, why
can’t the same number of trucks with the mean men be
deployed to Sambisa Forest?
That is a question for the DSS to answer. Perhaps his
attention has not been drawn to it, so by this very piece he
is being informed.
Ekpeyong Ita, the Director General of the DSS, is known to
be a man of peace. He is credited with reforming and
transforming the department. A knack operative in his
days, Ita has done more good to the DSS than most of his
predecessors. Unassuming, always wearing a calm look,
it is time for this gentleman operative to ensure that his
department and all he has worked for all these years are
not made a mockery of on account of the actions of some
overzealous men in black.
God forbid that day. But it is already happening in Borno
State, where some men wear military uniforms and kill
innocent Nigerians. The DSS should not open itself to the
collateral damage of Nigerians seeing it as an Enemy of
the State because of the conduct of a few, very few,
unscrupulous elements.
For President Goodluck Jonathn and his PDP, there is
nothing in the camp of the APC that can shake his return
next year as President and Commander-in-Chief. Yes, the
APC may still poke fun with its episodic flashes of
relevance in the polity. But with its refusal to wash itself
clean of a possible Muslim/Muslim presidential ticket till
date, it would require something of cataclysmic error on
the part of Mr. President to lose that election.
Therefore, allowing some officers of state to overheat
another part of the country, is unnecessary.
Osun State, which holds a governorship election on
Saturday, is not Sambisa Forest, where this show of force
is needed. Let the person the electorates want win in an
atmosphere free of the excesses of some servants of the
tax payers dressed in strange outfits.

Health / Albert Einstein College Of Medicine Cures HIV by Novabright: 5:57am On Dec 05, 2013
The Albert Einstein College of
Medicine, has presented new
developments on
radiommunotherapy to find
cures for HIV, at an annually held
meeting, for the Radiological
Society of North America.
Researchers have found that
radiommunotheraphy (RIT),
holds the potential to remove
lingering HIV infections.

Globally, millions of adults are
affected by the human
immunodeficiency virus (HIV). All
patients receive antiretroviral
therapy to try and combat the
infection. This works to keep the
virus from duplicating. However,
it does not provide a cure for
people with the disease, as some
of the HIV-infected cells remain in
the body.

Reports have stated that they are
still looking for a cure to
completely eliminate all the HIV-
infected cells, rather than just
slowing their progression.
However, the difficulty comes
with attempting to find a way to
do this, without damaging
healthy cells.

RIT, which became famous for
treating cancer, is where
radioactive isotopes attach
themselves to antibodies. They
then select a target, and destroy
cells. After these antibodies have
transported the radioisotope to
their target, the radioisotope
projects a lethal dose of
radiation. Targeted cells are such
that are infected with cancer, or
disease-causing microbes.

The research presented by Albert
Einstein College of Medicine, has
developed radiommunotherapy
to find a cure for HIV, by looking
at Dr. Dadachova’s previous
work, which showed that RIT
could successfully target without
harming healthy cells. It proves
that RIT could successfully target
and eliminate human immune
cells infected with HIV.

During the experiment, blood
samples were gathered from 15
HIV patients, who had been
treated with highly active
antiretroviral therapy (HAART).
The results showed that RIT was
able to selectively kill HAART-
treated lymphocytes. This
enabled the HIV infection to be
reduced to untraceable levels in
most samples.

Dr. Dadachova stated that
radioimmunotherapy could not
only destroy HIV-infected cells in
blood samples, but also within
the central nervous system. This,
she explained, offers a real
potential for the advancement of
finding a cure for HIV.

As the Albert Einstein research
team try to find cures for HIV,
they also investigated whether
RIT could reach infected cells
within the brain and central
nervous system. The anti-
retroviral drugs that are currently
used, do not sufficiently
penetrate the blood-brain
barrier. The blood-brain barrier
is an arrangement of blood
vessels that prevent detrimental
substances passing into the
brain, which is the reason many
victims of HIV, treated by HAART,
experience cognitive
impairment.

The team exhibited how the
same radiolabeled antibodies
used in previous investigations,
could eliminate HIV-infected cells
in the brain, without injuring the
barrier. Radioimmunotherapy
can therefore, kill HIV-infected
blood cells that have received
antiretroviral treatment, and cells
within the central nervous
system. This shows that RIT
offers real potential for being
developed into a cure for HIV.

It is a worldwide problem, and is
commonly caught by having sex
without a condom. It can be
passed on by sharing needles or
other injecting equipment, and
can also be spread through a
mother to her child
during pregnancy, birth and
breastfeeding. The virus violates
the immune system,
and weakens the capacity to
fight infections and disease.

The final stage is Aids, where the
body is unable to fight off life-
threatening infections. However,
with early diagnosis and effective
treatment, many people escape
this development. As the Albert
Einstein College of Medicine make
developments on
Radiommunotherapy, a cure for
the HIV epidemic may soon be
provided.

Education / Unilorin Discovers New Anti- Malaria Compounds. by Novabright: 8:10pm On Sep 10, 2013
If the gains from the World Bank-assisted Science and Technology Education Post-Basic Project (Step-B) are sustained, the University of Ilorin may soon introduce new anti-malaria derivatives into the country’s pharmaceutical industry.

The derivatives are parts of the 300 new compounds discovered at the laboratory of Prof. Joshua Ayoola Obaleye, one of the Step-B funded researchers at the University.

Malaria, an infectious disease characterised by cycles of chills, fever, and sweating, caused by a protozoan of the genus Plasmodium in red blood cells, which is transmitted to humans by the bite of an infected female anopheles mosquito, is a scourge in tropical Africa. It is particularly dangerous when children and pregnant women are attacked.

In a chat with University Bulletin last Monday (September 2, 2013), Prof. Obaleye disclosed that the new compounds have been tested on animals and microbes and found to be very successful, adding that “the next stage is to try it on humans”.

Prof. Obaleye stressed that his new discoveries are of higher value than existing derivatives, adding that after patenting, available compounds can be mass produced for the pharmaceutical industries for further processing into anti- malaria drugs.

He then called on Nigerian philanthropists to come to the aid of researchers by funding research more like it is being done in developed economies.

Eulogising the wisdom behind the Step-B project, the Professor of Inorganic Chemistry, who is a visiting Professor to many Universities in India, Zimbabwe, Italy and Israel, recalled that “before Step-B, things were very difficult to achieve. Though we travel outside the country for one award or the other, we still need to beg for global attention and recognition.”

He said, “In the past, I used to write and write for my articles to be published in journals. Now, I publish in journals very easily. Colleagues in foreign countries can follow activities of my laboratory from these journals. They get the same result and thus appreciate our efforts.

“Step-B is an organisation that has helped us move forward in several areas of research. Many problems afflicting researchers in this country were resolved under Step-B.

“From Step-B, I now have several research collaborators from outside the country. These people help to supervise postgraduate students who are working in this laboratory. One of them, who incidentally is on ground, is Prof. Avinash Kumbhar of the Department of Chemistry, University of Pune, India.”

Prof. Obaleye also disclosed that many researchers from Nigerian universities like the University of Ibadan, University of Jos, and the Delta State University come freely to use facilities in his Step-B equipped laboratory, adding that “we are not collecting a penny from anyone. Step-B gave us freely and we have to give it out freely.”

Inside the well-stocked laboratory located at the Chemistry Department, there are facilities comparable to many others worldwide such as Spectrophotometer, Infra-red Spectrophotometer, Gas Chromatograph and atomic absorption Spectrophotometer.

One of Prof. Obaleye's collaborators, Prof. Kumbhar, who was busy in the laboratory, told Unilorin Bulletin of plans to elevate the collaboration between him and the Unilorin researcher to institutional level whereby the University of Pune, India and the University of Ilorin, would, through a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), work out staff and students development exchange programmes among other benefits.

He said that the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ambali, is already aware of , and is encouraging, this plan.

Responding to questions on scholarships, fellowships and grant opportunities to Nigerian students from Indian government, the visiting Professor, who is also the Coordinator of National Centre for Free Radical Research (NCFRR), India, discussed the opportunities provided by the BST-TWAS funding partnership.

BST-TWAS, according to him, is an Indian government partnership with an agency of the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
