Nairaland / General / FG Appeals For Dialogue With Niger Delta Avengers by nwatiti(m): 4:36pm On Jul 03, 2016
The federal government says the presence of soldiers in the Niger Delta region does not mean the government was opposed to dialogue – The secretary to the government of the federation, Babachir Lawal says there is need for the government to identify the representatives of the militants before a dialogue can take place

– Appeals to leaders of Niger Delta communities to call the militants to order Niger Delta Avengers has consistently rejected dialogue with the government and is demanding resource control for the Niger Delta region.
The federal government says it is ready to dialogue with the Niger Delta Avengers (NDA) and other militant groups in the Niger Delta region. According to Premium Times, the secretary to the government of the federation, Babachir Lawal, said on Saturday, July 2, that the presence of soldiers in the region does not mean the government was opposed to dialogue.
He said there is need for the government to identify the representatives of the militants before a dialogue can occur. He said: “Government is not averse to discussing with them (militants) but we need to know who is in charge and who we can discuss with meaningfully; that’s the dilemma of the government at the moment. “There are so many groups making it difficult to know who to talk to and the level of control that group will bring to the process.” Lawal, who pointed out that the activities of the militants were more inimical to the region than other parts of the country, appealed to leaders of Niger Delta communities to call the militants to order.

“When they blow up oil pipelines, the spill destroys their water and lands, a development that will take years to recover. They are more victims than the rest of Nigerians,” he said. Meanwhile the NDA have reported about their new attacks on oil and gas producing facilities belonging to Chevron, the Nigerian Petroleum Development Company (NPDC) and the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC). The group in a series tweets claimed responsibility for attacks on Friday, Saturday night and early Sunday morning on at least five facilities in Delta state. The group consistently has rejected dialogue with the government and is demanding resource control for the Niger Delta region. Meanwhile, Governor Seriake Dickson of Bayelsa state has issued a warning to the federal government security outfit in the Niger Delta region on how they handle militants in the region. Dickson, who specifically cautioned Rear Admiral Joseph Okojie, the new commander of the Operation Delta when he received him on Friday in Yenagoa, the state capital, asked them the security agency to be professional.
Speaking through his chief press secretary, Daniel Iworiso-Markson, the governor harped on the importance of allowing the security agents to be neutral in dealing with criminal activities.
Nairaland / General / Minimum Wage Committee Begins Deliberations by nwatiti(m): 4:26pm On Jul 03, 2016
The 15-man committee inaugurated by the Federal Government on the implementation of the new minimum wage for workers has started sitting. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) gathered from some members of the committee at the weekend that it had met once. Mr Chris Onyedika, Acting General Secretary of a faction of the NLC and a member of the 15- man committee, also confirmed that it had started deliberations on the agreement reached between the Federal Government and factions of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) in May, this year. The 15-man committee will review the Federal Government’s liberalisation of the downstream sector of the petroleum industry, leading to the new fuel pump price of N145 per litre. The committees will discuss and recommend a new national minimum wage, the N500 billion palliatives being proposed by the Federal Government and the re-constitution of the Petroleum Products Pricing and Regulatory Agency Board, among other issues, before presenting their recommendations to government,’’ Onyedika said. NAN recalls that the government in May increased the price of Petrol from N97.00 to N145 per litre, which led to some agitation and a warning strike by Organised Labour. The Joint Negotiation Council had also started to agitate for an increase in national minimum wage for workers, which was last reviewed five years ago. Meanwhile, at this year’s International Labour Organisation (ILO) conference in Geneva , Switzerland, participants encouraged the ILO to promote the ratification and implementation of the Minimum Wage Fixing Convention, 1970. The NLC and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), the two central labour organizations in the country have proposed N56, 000 as the new national minimum wage to the Federal Government, as against the current N18, 000. The current national minimum wage law which prescribed N18, 000 was enacted in 2011.
Nairaland / General / I’ve No Hand In Abia Crisis – AGF by nwatiti(m): 3:56pm On Jul 03, 2016
Ade Adesomoju, Abuja The Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr. Abubakar Malami, said on Sunday that he had yet to offer any legal opinion on the developments which followed the June 27 judgment that sacked Governor Okezie Ikpeazu. The minister, through his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Salihu Isah, asked parties to the case to await decisions of the court. Justice Abang had sacked Ikpeazu for allegedly disclosing false information in relation to his tax clearance details to the Independent National Electoral Commission in his form nominating him as the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party for the last year’s governorship election in the state. The judge, also in the said judgment, ordered the governor’s foremost rival who was the first runner-up in the primary that produced Ikpeazu as the candidate of the PDP, Mr. Uche Ogah, to takeover. The judge held that Ikpeazu was not qualified to be PDP’s candidate having disclosed false information to INEC in violation of his party’s election guideliness and the Electoral Act and thereby ordered that Ogah be sworn in as governor in Ikpeazu’s stead. This elicited tension and a stalemate situation in the state when on Wednesday, the INEC, acting on the judgment, issued a certificate of return to Ogah, paving the way for him to be sworn in as governor. Malami, in the statement issued by his media aide on Sunday, denied having a hand in INEC’s decision to issue a certificate of return to Ogah. Isah said the INEC had yet to seek the minister’s opinion on the issue and that the minister had yet to offer any. He described as “crass lies” alleged insinuations “being peddled and disseminated by a cross- section of Nigerians and the various media platforms that the Honourable Attorney General of the Federation is behind the legal logjam over the Abia state governorship seat.”
Politics / Press Release By Uche Sampson Ogar Support Group by nwatiti(m): 8:33pm On Jul 02, 2016
1. On 27th June, 2016, the Federal High Court of Nigeria, in two consolidated cases delivered well-reasoned judgments in which the Court ordered the “Independent National Electoral Commission forthwith to issue certificate of return to the plaintiff, Dr. Sampson Uchechukwu Ogah as Governor of Abia State for the Election held on the 11th April, 2015 and restore all entitlements to him as the elected Governor of Abia State. Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu is hereby ordered to vacate office as Governor of Abia State.” (SUIT NO. FHC/ABJ/CS/71/2016: DR. SAMPSON UCHECHUKWU OGAH vs. PEOPLE’S DEMOCRATIC PARTY & 4 OTHERS, and SUIT NO. FHC/ABJ/CS/1086/2014: OBASI UBAH EKEAGBARA vs. PEOPLE’S DEMOCRATIC PARTY & 2 OTHERS).

2. Pursuant to the judgment, the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, issued ‘Certificate of Return for Governor of a State’ to the Dr. Sampson Uchechukwu Ogah in INEC headquarters in Abuja.

3. By virtue of the issuance of the Certificate of Return to Dr. Uchechukwu Ogah, the one earlier issued to Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu became nullified, void, invalidated and cancelled, and he ceased to be the Governor of Abia State by virtue thereof.

5. In a deliberate desperation to frustrate the actualization of the swearing in of the declared Governor, the removed governor and his henchmen illegally whisked off the Chief Judge and the President of the Customary Court of Appeal of Abia State the persons constitutionally empowered to administer the Oath of Office to the declared Governor. The judicial officers were not found anywhere in Abia State and could not be reached howsoever. See Vanguard Newspaper of Friday 1st July, 2016 front-page, and other newspapers.

6. The disappearance and unavailability of the said judicial officers were deliberately orchestrated and or caused to be orchestrated by Dr. Ikpeazu to instigate political and social crisis in the state.

7. Dr. Ikpeazu, knowing that the Chief Judge and the President of the Customary Court of Appeal of Abia State are the persons constitutionally empowered to administer the Oath of Office to the declared Governor, did not stop at whisking these judicial officers into hostage-hiding, but also hurriedly concocted and or cooked-up an order of injunction purporting to restrain the said officers from administering the oath of office to the declared Governor.

8. Still in a state of desperation and in his characteristic irregular conduct, Dr. Ikpeazu purported to declare a public holiday for Friday and Monday, 1st and 4th July, 2016 which according to him is to honour Chief Ojo Maduekwe who died on 27th June 2016 even though his burial date has not been fixed by his family. It is ridiculous that a Monday and Friday Public holiday is being declared in the circumstance. In any event, he has no power or capacity in law to declare a public holiday or carry out any official duties of a governor as his certificate of return has been invalidated and withdrawn by INEC on the basis of a valid court order, and he is no longer a governor.

9. The filing of a Notice of Appeal and motion for stay by Dr. Ikpeazu does not, cannot, and should not operate to delay the swearing in of the declared governor, INEC having issued him a Certificate of Return and withdrawn and cancelled that earlier issued to Dr. Ikpeazu.

10. The judgment that removed Ikpeazu, the ex-governor, is not an election petition where the sitting governor may be entitled to continue in office till his appeal is finally determined. (Nation Newspaper, Friday 1ST July, 2016, page 2). The import of the judgment of the Federal High Court is simply that Dr. Ikpeazu was not in the first place qualified to be a candidate. The law does not, should not, and can never offer protection or be manipulated to offer protection in any form to what was not supposed to be, what does not exist. As lawyers would say, you cannot place something on noting and expect it stand. It will collapse. Okezie’s candidature has been found to have been placed on nothing (or at best on an illegality and falsehood), it makes legal, logical and common sense that he should leave office and not be encouraged or allowed to hide behind a notice of appeal, motion for stay or any legal technicality to continue to enjoy the fruit of his falsehood, dishonesty and illegality. He is not entitled to any legal protection.

11. Dr. Ikpeazu no longer being Governor of Abia State and Dr. Uche Ogah not having been formally sworn in as Governor of the state, a state of administrative and constitutional vacuum, socio-political tension, confusion, and uncertainty is created and prevailing in the state.

12. We call upon the Chief Justice of Nigeria, the Attorney General of the Federation, and the Inspector General of Police to avert, as a matter of extreme urgency, the continuation of a state of administrative and constitutional vacuum, socio-political tension, confusion, uncertainty and lawlessness enthroned in Abia State by the removed governor, and restore peace, order and governance in Abia State and avoid a complete breakdown of law and order in the state by causing the real people’s governor to be sworn in immediately.

GOD BLESS ABIA STATE, AND GOD BLESS THE FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF NIGERIA!

Romance / 7 Ways To Drive Your Partner Wild In The Bedroom by nwatiti(m): 6:55am On Jul 01, 2016
To make your man remain committed to you for life, you need to rock his world in the bedroom. Traditionally, men are the ones who initiate sex. They are wired that way as a result of their ancient hunter ancestors. Most men love women who are open to trying new things in the bedroom. But it gets boring when he has to be the one doing this every time. There’s more to sex than just penetration. Everyone has a different sexual appetite but a woman who can take her clothes off with confidence is much more attractive than a woman who asks her man to turn the lights off first. So it is important not to make your partner feel bad about anything he wants to do with you. Don’t judge him, be open to his fantasies, so he will feel safe to express himself sexually and be connected to you on a deeper level. NAIJ.com has therefore come up with seven ways to drive your man wild and have him on his knees begging for more. 1. Attitude Guys want to have sex with a woman who is actually into it. Eagerness and enthusiasm go a long way. A lot of women have the attitude that just letting a guy have sex with her is some kind of gift, and guys hate that. If you are just going through the motions, or doing it out of obligation, as a favor, or because you want something in return, that is a major turn off. The ultimate turn-on for a guy is being with a woman who is enjoying the sex just as much as he is. 2. Tell Him “I Want You” Men have a strong need to be sexually wanted. Just telling a man “I want you” can do all kinds of things for his ego. Letting him know how much you enjoy sex with him also works great. Try telling him, “I love having you inside me.” If you’re too shy to say that aloud, try texting him. If you don’t want to be that direct, you can let him catch you staring at his butt or any other part of his body that turns you on. Perhaps even touch him more than usual, especially in naughty places. Objectify him a little, lust after him, and let him know how much he turns you on. You’ll catch him off guard and make him feel like he’s so sexy you just can’t control yourself. 3. Be In Charge Although men love to be in charge, they like to be dominated every once in a while too. It can get boring after a while to be the one who is always in control. It drives a guy wild when a woman grabs him, pushes him down, and has her way with him. A woman who knows what she wants and goes after it is a huge turn on. If you tend to let your man take control all the time, try turning the tables and taking the reins once in a while. Not only will your man be in for a surprise, but he’ll know without a doubt how much you want him. 4. Express Yourself Guys love it when you let loose and get loud. A woman who can express herself in the bedroom is a huge turn on. Whether it’s moaning and groaning or uninhibited screaming, they appreciate the feedback that whatever they’re doing is working. Guys need to know they’re doing a good job. They want to know that they’re driving you so wild that you can’t help but scream in ecstasy. 5. Instruct Him Every woman is different when it comes to what they like. Guys appreciate a little guidance on how to pleasure you, otherwise it’s a lot of trial and error on their part. You are the one person who knows exactly what it takes to get you off, so help a guy out and give him some instructions to set him in the right direction. Don’t be shy about it! Whether you guide him with sounds or words of encouragement when he’s on the right track, or flat out tell him what to do when he’s not, most guys will be thankful. A woman who knows what she wants is a turn on. Plus, guys get a lot of sexual gratification from pleasing their partners. 6. Worship Him For men, sex is very much about feeding their egos. They want to feel desired, appreciated, and worshiped. And this is why MouthAction is so important to men. They are fixated on it so much because they want you to worship their cocks just as much as they do. The key to giving a mind-blowing Mouth Action is actually enjoying it. Having the power to send your man over the edge with a knee- buckling, thigh-quivering orgasm should make you feel sexy as hell. Make eye-contact with your man and let him see how much pleasure it gives you to please him. 7. Be Real, Don’t Fake It Women usually mean well when they fake an orgasm. They don’t want to bruise their man’s ego so they just let him think he finished the job. However, you are actually giving positive reinforcement for something that did not work. If your man is not pleasing you, tell him how he can. Above all, your man really does want to please you and faking it does not it allow him to be the best lover he can be.

Celebrities / Incredible Things You Will Learn From Tiwa Savage's Life by nwatiti(m): 10:20pm On Jun 29, 2016
Tiwa Savage is one of the brilliant artistes we have in Nigeria; she is a talented singer and performer who have not limited herself in the entertainment world. She is a proud mother who has made her life revolve around her son; the same way every African woman does. For a while, her name had been in the air following the domestic drama that ensued between her and her estranged husband, Tee Billz. We would try as much as possible to be fair and leave that issue alone. Nigerians and her fans had been judgmental enough. We should give her a break and help her move on with her life. These things happen in other people’s lives too; the fact that they are celebrities does not mean we should dwell on their problems and leave ours. Back to the main matter, Tiwa Savage fits the perfect description of an African woman. The Nigerian singer and performer was born in Ikeja before she relocated to London with her family when she was eleven. She graduated from the University of Kent where she badged a degree in Business Administration. She did backup vocals for George Michaels when she was just sixteen and worked with artistes like Mary J. Blige, Chaka khan, Blu Cantrell, Ms Dynamite to mention just a few. All these asides, we would be looking at key points you can learn from the life of this beautiful singer. They would no doubt leave you inspired: 1. Learn to be strong in all things As much as we do not want to talk about the fight this talented artiste had with her husband, we cannot help commending her bravery and strength. Usually, when people go through breakups in marriages, they are usually devastated. Many do not know how to pick up from that point and move on with their lives. As much as she handled the issue with much grace and finesse, we know that she would have moments of somber reflection. But with what we have seen in the past couple of days following the ugly drama, this diva had been able to saunter into another phase of life. Do not let your situation define you. Learn to move on and carry on with your life. We never stop living until we die. Do not make yourself a living dead. READ ALSO: Reasons why you should stop cooking with canned tomato paste 2. Bravery and dedication Another thing you can learn from Tiwa Savage is being brave and dedicated. If you know the history of this young and beautiful singer, then you would understand that she has come too far to let anything get her derailed from her dreams and life goals. She participated in the UK edition of the X- Factor and made it to the last twenty-four. She did not give up and quit as a singer. She is one hell of a woman with prospects; learn to put your all into something you believe in and that big break will come someday. 3. Learn to be a super woman In the interview she granted after the fall out with her husband, she said a lot. This will open your mind to the kind of woman she is. Although she appeared to be in pain while she granted the interview many thought of to be staged, she made points that one could reason with. She is not the kind of woman that would wait for a man to do things for her. She knows her roles and responsibilities as a mother and wife and try as much as possible to do her best. She was footing the bills in her home and did not leak this out until everything became ugly. It is good to be hard-working as a woman; if you find yourself a rich man, then it is a plus. 4. Make your family come first Despite her achievements in her musical career and all, she has never stopped being the mother of her son. While some of you may say there is no big deal about that, we should call your attention to the fact not everyone can do that. She goes everywhere with her child and cannot afford to leave him for a second. She also dresses well for him and shower him with all the love a mother could ever give her child. Women who are not celebrities leave the affairs of their children to the maids and use their busy lifestyles to cover up. READ ALSO: 10 fashion trends we definitely do not miss in Nigeria 5. Remember others and reach out to them Tiwa Savage is down to earth; despite her upbringing and the fame she has acquired, she tries as much as possible to reach out to others. She is actively involved in various youth empowerment schemes as her way of reaching out to people. Apart from the youths, she plays active roles in breast cancer screening across the country. A notable input of hers was when she tried raising money for an organization that builds schools. There are some of our celebrities who are yet to learn the act of giving. Life should be about making positive impacts. Live and do things that would make people remember you long after you have gone.

Education / Federal Government Insists Post-utme Remains Banne by nwatiti(m): 9:50pm On Jun 27, 2016
Education minister says the announcement was important to re-echo it in the minds of stakeholders – Argues that only JAMB scores and certificates should be requirements for admission The federal government has reiterated its desire to place a permanent ban on the Post Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (Post-UTME). This much was disclosed by Malam Adamu Adamu, Nigeria’s minister of education, who confirmed that the initial ban on the exercise, stated categorically that it (the ban) takes immediate effect. According to a press statement obtained by Leadership, Adamu said he had to emphasise the ban so as to ensure that no stakeholder is left in doubt on government’s position. Ben Ben Goong, the deputy director, press and public relations in the ministry of Education, issued the released which read: “For the avoidance of doubt, any educational institution after secondary education is regarded as a tertiary institution. Therefore all tertiary institutions, polytechnics, Colleges of Education, universities or by whatever name it is called after secondary education must be subjected to admission through the JAMB. “Clearing in this case (screening) entails only the verification of certificates of the candidates, JAMB scores, and any other physical examination to ensure that such candidates are not cultists. After this, the candidates are qualified for matriculation. “Such screening should be at no cost to the parents or students and should be done upon resumption in order to avoid unnecessary travels in search of admission.” The minister added that a situation where final year students in the nation’s secondary schools are subjected to too many examinations in one year could be best described as traumatic, exploitative and absolutely unnecessary. Recently, a report by Daily Sun detailed how some universities have tactfully ignored the directive of the federal government as regards the recent cancellation of post- UTME fees. According to the report, the universities have devised other means to test applicants and charge administrative fees in the process. The universities were said to have invited applicants for admission for the 2016/2017 academic session, ask them to pay certain amount and also sit for a screening test before being considered for admission.

Anthony Woolich, from international trade lawyers Holman Fenwick Willan, says government lawyers need to look at the UK relationship with the EU and out to the world. For the EU, a deal could take the shape of joining the EEA, like Norway; or a free trade agreement; Swiss-style bilateral agreements; a customs union like Turkey; or falling back on WTO non-discrimination rules. Looking out, the UK for a while could "grandfather" - piggyback on trade arrangements the EU has with about 50 other countries, before it then has to renegotiate them itself. Are there enough lawyers to do it? He says many would need to be brought up to speed. It's a lot of agreements for parliament to approve, with a lot of countries. They also need to go through four decades of EU legislation to decide what to keep. "I think it's going to take a long time," he says. But: 13:32 The EU needs the UK and the UK needs the EU. The UK has about 50% of its trade with the EU, the EU buys lots from the UK. It's in everyone's interests for a future trading relationship to be based on a firm footing and be mutually beneficial."
Nairaland / General / Again, Red Scorpions Blow Shell Pipeline In Imo by nwatiti(m): 8:05am On Jun 26, 2016
For the second time in a week, a new militant group in Imo State, the Red Scorpions, yesterday, may have bombed an oil pipeline belonging to Shell Petroleum Development Oil Company, in Awara, Ohaji/Egbema Local Council of Imo State. The members of the new group, which claimed responsibility for the attack, had emerged in the week, accusing oil companies operating in Ohaji/Egbema and Oguta Local Councils, of marginalising their host communities. Consequently, the group issued an order directing the companies to evacuate their workers and quickly leave their communities. They insisted that they could continue attacking their facilities as long as they continue to ‘neglect and marginalise’ their communities in terms of providing commensurate developmental facilities and providing employment for the people of the areas. They accused the state and Federal Government, of not doing enough to intervene in the matter. In a statement, the militant group argued that “equal rights should be given to them’ in the country.” Before the attack, the Imo State House of Assembly had in a resolution, kicked against the exclusion of Imo from certain allocations due to other oil producing States in the country. Reacting, the Imo State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Andrew Enwerem, said the command got the information, stating that it was yet to ascertain the extent of damage. A few years ago, during the mopping up of arms from militants, many youths from the area willingly submitted their arms at the defunct Multi Purpose Hall, Government House, Owerri. But they complained that they were excluded from the Federal Government’s Amnesty Programme.

Politics / We Have Strong Evidence On Sexual Misconduct- US OFFICIAL by nwatiti(m): 10:59pm On Jun 24, 2016
Officials of the US government said they have strong evidence of sexual misconduct allegedly put on the three members of the House of Representatives – US Ambassador informed the Speaker, Hon Yakubu Dogara about the issue, as gotten from a high-powered diplomatic source Premium Times gathered that some officials privileged to confidential information said Yakubu Dogara was told about the sexual scandal by the US envoy in Nigeria. Faces of the House of Representatives members allegedly roped in a sex scandal in US U.S. Ambassador in Nigeria, James Mr. Entwistle, wrote a letter dated Thursday, June 9, alleging that three Nigerian lawmakers – Mohammed Garba Gololo (Bauchi APC), Samuel Ikon (Akwa Ibom PDP) and Mark Gbillah (Benue APC) were involved in soliciting sexual favours from hotel staff in two separate incidents, during their visit to the US. READ ALSO: Sex Scandal: What Nigerian lawmakers involved want It was alleged that Gololo grabbed a maid in the hotel and requested for sex, Ikon and Gbilla were said to have told hotel parking attendants to get commercial sex workers for them. The purported sexual misconducts happened sometime in April at the Residence Inn Marriot, Downtown Cleveland and were immediately reported to State Department officials by the hotel’s management. The House of Representatives members who reacted to the allegations and threats of legal action, as local witnesses in Cleveland and sources close to State Department and the Nigerian diaspora community in Washington DC informed Premium Times and relevant U.S. officials, that they are in possession of records specifying “circumstances of” the alleged misconduct, comprising of “eyewitness reports” and real- time “video” evidence. READ ALSO: Dogara tells US to prove sex misconduct allegations The source said: “The Ambassador wouldn’t have written to the Speaker if there is no solid evidence,” also saying that after the hotel manager reported the sexual scandal, the State Department officers “had to investigate before acting on the allegations.” The source who gave the details of investigation carried out so far opposed Gololo’s denial, stressing that of the three lawmakers, “he is the one who actually put his hand on somebody, the others only made a verbal request”. Premium Times gathered from the state department that “the woman he (Gololo) allegedly accosted felt intimidated.” On the other hand, she reported the incident to her supervisor at immediately after saving herself from the offensive situation. “You don’t need to have a car to talk to a parking lot attendant,” A source said “In all honesty, the Ambassador would not have gone forward with the letter if there is no solid evidence behind it,” further saying that that Mr Entwistle “is not going to apologise; there is nothing to apologize for.” There have insinuations that Einwistle was trying “to bring disrepute to the hallowed institution of the National Assembly and the entire nation of Nigeria”, as a source informed said the intention was to put out there that some participants in the International Visitor Leadership Programme (IVLP), not all, are guilty of sexual misconduct and to educate participants who may be admitted for this and other programmes in future. “The reality is that these three gentlemen made a mistake. They violated the terms of the IVLP of which they were duly informed before they left Abuja,” Premium Times learnt from the said source., while adding that, “prostitution is not legal in the U.S., they were informed about that before their departure.” “If they had been remorseful, if they had just said it was miscommunication and apologised, that would have been the end of it. They were accused of assault and solicitation, no one talked about rape.” the source said further In addition, Premium Times has it on good authority that State Department officials are not worried about the lawmakers’ threat of legal action because, according to our Washington DC sources, “they know their evidence will hold up in court”. “If they (Gololo, Ikon and Gbillah) want the full spotlight of the justice system to shine on the evidence in the possession of the State Department, they should go ahead and initiate a lawsuit. “Their conduct was a breach of U.S. law, instead of calling State Department officials, hotel managers could have had them summarily arrested and charged. As it is, everybody gave them a pass, letting them complete the programme without interference,” The source revealed. A Nigerian who lives in Washington DC said: “I won’t be surprised if they keep female service staff away from anyone who identifies as a Nigerian or carries Nigerian passport.” Earlier today, reports had it that, 10 Nigerian lawmakers who attended International Visitors Leadership Programme in Cleveland, Ohio, United States, were interrogated by officials of the US State Department over allegations of sexual misconduct against three of their colleagues.

Politics / Probe Unfair Allocation Of Oil Blocs, iyc Tells Buhari by nwatiti(m): 10:29pm On Jun 23, 2016
Probe unfair allocation of oil blocs, IYC tells Buhari 23rd June 2016 News Simon Utebor, Yenagoa The Ijaw Youth Council Worldwide on Monday warned that there will be more hostilities in the Niger Delta region unless President Muhammadu Buhari probes unfair allocation of oil blocs in the country. IYC President, Mr. Udengs Eradiri, gave the warning at a news conference at the Ijaw House, Yenagoa, as part of activities to celebrate this year’s Isaac Boro Day. Many shops in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State capital, were shut on Monday following a directive by the IYC that shop owners should not open for business as a mark of honour for Boro. Eradiri’s warning came barely five days after the Niger Delta Avengers listed some oil blocs allegedly owned by former Vice-President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar; former Minister of Defence, Gen. Theophilus Danjuma; Ex-Minister of Petroleum, Alhaji Riwalnu Lukman, other Northerners and South-Westerners in the region. The NDA had among others issued them a two- week ultimatum to shut down operations at the oil blocs and evacuate the workers from the locations or have them attacked. Eradiri said that most of the indiscriminate sharing of oil blocs were allegedly carried out when Buhari served as Petroleum Minister or Head of State. He accused the President of denying Niger Delta people ownership of oil blocs at the time while allegedly allocating same to his kinsmen and their cronies like a bazaar. He said, “One of the most salient issues that if not addressed will lead to more crisis is the issue of the oil blocs. “President Buhari was one time Petroleum Minister and Head of State in this country. Let us go and do an assessment of that time. The time when criminally they shared our oil blocs was under his watch either as Petroleum Minister or as Head of State. It is in one of those times. “Oil blocs were shared to one group. Look at it, either the person (owner of oil bloc) was a former military president or relative of the military president or an in-law to a military president.” Eradiri insisted that the allocation of the oil blocs did not follow due process outlined by the government. He called for a total review of the oil blocs to redress the injustice that such a manipulated process had brought against oil-producing communities of the Niger Delta. “And that is one of the biggest issues that if not addressed, there will be more Niger Delta Avengers, you will see groups and groups that will spring up until the issue is addressed,” he warned. Eradiri described Boro as “an intellectual and fearless comrade” who stood up for the Niger Delta despite the oppressive tendencies of the government at the time. The IYC president noted that the issues of underdevelopment of the region for which Boro took up arms against the Federal Government “were still hunting us till today”. Politics / Fayose Insists That His Election Was Funded By Zenith Bank by nwatiti(m): 6:01pm On Jun 23, 2016
Ekiti State Governor, Mr. Ayodele Fayose, has reacted to the alleged denial of the involvement of Zenith Bank Plc in the funding of his election in 2014, asking the bank should come out with an official statement on the matter. The governor was reacting to a news report in the media claiming that the bank had dissociated itself from the funding of his election. Speaking through his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Idowu Adelusi, in Ado Ekiti on Thursday, the governor said, "I stand by my claim that Zenith Bank Plc majorly funded my election in June 2014. "I don't expect an organisation like Zenith Bank to stay in a corner in a matter of national concern like this and be talking. "Rather, I expect the Zenith Bank to issue an official statement not as feeble as this one being peddled in the media so that I can begin the second stage of my revelations. "My statement was made in the open and if I can accuse an institution like Zenith Bank in the open, I expect the institution to give an official reply. "All that have been claimed to have been said by the Zenith Bank in the media can be situated in the realm of rumour. "And I want to refer the APC, the Zenith Bank and the EFCC to John chapter 8 verses 6-7, which says, 'This they said, tempting him, that they might have to accuse him. But Jesus stooped down and with his finger wrote on the ground, as though he heard them not. When they continued asking him, he lifted up himself and said unto them, he that is without sin among you, let him cast the first stone.'" "Let those who are orchestrating this know that failure awaits them."

Nairaland / General / European Union Referendum by nwatiti(m): 5:44pm On Jun 23, 2016
European Union referendum: UK goes to the polls 23 June 2016 EU Referendum Voting is under way in a historic referendum on whether the UK should remain a member of the European Union or leave. A record 46,499,537 people are entitled to take part, according to provisional figures from the Electoral Commission. Polling stations opened at 07:00 BST and will close at 22:00 BST. It is only the third nationwide referendum in UK history and comes after a four-month battle for votes between the Leave and Remain campaigns. In common with other broadcasters, the BBC is limited in what it can report while polls are open but you can follow the results as they come in across the BBC after polls close on Thursday evening. The referendum ballot paper asks the following question: "Should the United Kingdom remain a member of the European Union or leave the European Union?" Whichever side gets more than half of all votes cast is considered to have won. The weather forecast for polling day is mixed. There have been thunderstorms in London and south-east England which caused flooding overnight. Kingston upon Thames Council in south west London has moved two polling stations after they were inundated with water. Sunshine and heavy showers are forecast for Northern Ireland and Scotland but it is set to be drier and brighter elsewhere. After the referendum polls close, sealed ballot boxes will be collected and transported to the count venue for each of the 382 local counting areas. These represent all 380 local government areas in England, Scotland and Wales, plus one each for Northern Ireland and Gibraltar. Follow the action on the BBC From 22:00 BST, there will be comprehensive coverage on the BBC News website and app with live text and video streaming, reaction and analysis from BBC editors and others. There will also be an up-to-the-minute full results service and details of all local results . BBC One, the BBC News Channel and BBC Parliament will broadcast a results show hosted by David Dimbleby alongside BBC experts and special guests from 21:55 BST. Coverage continues through the night and Sophie Raworth, Andrew Neil and Victoria Derbyshire pick up the coverage on Friday morning. The results programme will be streamed internationally on the BBC News website from 22:00 BST. BBC Radio 5 live will have coverage as the results come in, as will Radio 4 from 23:00 BST until the Today programme picks up at 06:00 BST on Friday. From 22:00 GMT, television viewers outside the UK can tune in via BBC World News and BBC World News America. Listeners outside the UK can tune into BBC World Service radio for regular updates. Referendum night - what to watch out for Results from these areas will then be declared throughout the night, along with result totals from 11 nations and regions. Depending on how close the poll is, the result may become clear before the final national result is officially declared by the Chief Counting Officer, who will be based at Manchester Town Hall. The Electoral Commission estimates a final result "around breakfast time" on Friday. The last nationwide referendum took place five years ago, when voters rejected an attempt to change the way MPs are elected. The first one was in 1975, when the country was asked whether the UK should continue to be a member of what was then called the European Economic Community.
Nairaland / General / 11 People You Should Definitely Not Invite To Your Wedding by nwatiti(m): 4:51pm On Jun 23, 2016
Your wedding day is your day! That day you have been dreaming about. Finally, the Lord has answered your prayers and you are going to be married to your boo of life. You have planned everything from the day you were conceived: the type of suit or wedding gown you’ll wear, the cake, the venue, the music, the big VIPs you’ll invite to come and spray you dollars. Guests at a wedding A week before the wedding you are praying: “Oh God, please don’t come and let one winch spoil my day o!” Well, you won’t need that prayer if you organise your guest list very well. Do not leave anything to chance. Here is a great list that will help you filter the unwanted elements whom the devil might possess to come and ruin your day. 1. Your ex There is no “we are now friends” in this matter. Anything could happen. They could get drunk and start spilling the beans on how many abortions you shared or how (face palm) they still love you. You don’t need that drama. Nix that goodwill. 2. Your babymama/papa Your babies can come but not their mama or papa. It’s not a two for one package. You don’t need shady talk disguised as “I’m just joking now” on how your boos wedding gown is too revealing or how your man could not even afford to hire a better bridal limousine. Nah! Say no to bad bele! 3. Your friend that hates your spouse Seriously, all naysayers and bad vibes givers should just be barred at the gates of the wedding venue. The evil eye alone that your bad bele friend will be transmitting toward the high table might just kill you too. And you don’t need some idiot taking bets at your wedding on how long your marriage will last. READ ALSO: After breaking the internet with her pre-wedding photos, see what happened to bride-to-be 4. Your ex-best friend that knows where all the bodies are buried (your past) This is the friend that has known you since forever and the when it comes the time to make a toast they start with: “I remember when John and I used to go to Ynot every Friday and just hang out with prostitutes.” Alcohol can be a good thing for some but not for everybody. If you don’t want this person shaming you just better leave them off your guest list. 5. Your friend that has a crush on your boo Allow her to spend that day in house jeje, crying over her loss. You don’t need somebody doing sexy dance with your husband on the dance floor all in the name of celebrating you. She or he might even poison you by mistake. 6. That osho-free friend that likes to chop but will not give you gifts Mba! Notice should be placed around the venue even broadcasted on the news, barring this person from even the street of the venue. They will complain about the rice, they will complain about the salad all the while stuffing their handbags with all the food and drinks they can carry. Meanwhile, when you later confront them on how they didn’t even drop one gift despite being the one person that enjoyed the wedding the most -even more than you – they’ll ask you: “Ehen, people used to give gifts. I didn’t know o! I thought it was the other way around.” READ ALSO: 3 Times E-Money shot gun of money at parties, Nigerians react (video) 7. Your racist or tribalistic relative “Yoruba people are this, Yoruba people are that.” “See all the 419 omo nna spraying money.” Nah, you don’t need to be hearing that. You might also want to ban this people from home after you are married unless you want someone calling your kids “okoro” in the name of joke. 8. Your uncle’s father’s brother’s aunty that knew you before you were conceived You know, that relatives you only see at burials in the village? The ones that keep reminding you of how their great grandfather is related to your great grandmother’s mother’s sister’s grandfather. The relationship is so far we are not even related. Sorry, no invite for you. No one needs your family history storytelling at my wedding. 9. Your boss that refused to give you two weeks off for honeymoon “A wedding is just a day’s event,” he tells you. “You go in, you get out. You can even come back to work if it were during the week.” Slave- driver, please stay away. READ ALSO: 10 dapper wedding looks of Nigerian men we totally love 10. Your bitterly divorced friend Nah, you don’t need that long regretful face spoiling all your wedding pictures. Or someone reminiscing about how their wedding day was their happiest day until it wasn’t. Not today, Satan. 11. Your landlord (especially if you still owe rent) Don’t even try yourself. Landlord, will just sit down and be taking stock of everything at the reception. “He can afford Dom Perignon on every table but he cannot afford rent.” “Ah-ah, buffet! okay now.” Be ready to get a rent increase in the next two months.
