Politics / As I Sat And Pondered...(a Poem) by nwatiti(m): 8:21pm On Mar 09, 2021
At the beginning the story was different... the hope was high, the goal looked achievable, the future looked bright, It was not a dream, it looked like reality, as we were told when we were young, that we are the leaders of tomorrow, we were deceived that our destiny is in our hands,
that education is the key, that we are the government, they said we can change the government... but the government changed us...
from harmless to monsters, from students to strugglers, from teachers to cheaters, from stars to fraudsters, from youths to touts, from grinders to gangsters,
then I sat and pondered...

is this the future is this the destiny

why the scars in our body? why the tears in our eyes? why has pains taken over pleasure?
then I sat and pondered...
who can change tomorrow? where are the youths? where am I? where is our strength

Politics / Only Igbo President Will Save Nigeria – Prominent Cleric by nwatiti(m): 1:32pm On Aug 25, 2016
Princewill Iheme drops his predictions for probable Nigeria’s r e structuring
– He revealed that restructuring is a political agenda for 2019 presidential election
– The prophet advised Nigerians to elect Igbo president to save the nation Prominent Prophet Ochi-eze Princewill Iheme has stated that the only solution to all Nigerian problems is to elect Igbo president. Prophet Ochi-eze Princewill Iheme The man of God made this known in an exclusive statement for NAIJ.com.
This came as Biafra movement and Niger Delta militants are demanding to organize referendum for Nigeria’s restructuring. Prophet Iheme said: “Restructuring is not the solution to end Nigeria problems. The problems in Nigeria are ethnic hatred, hatred between Christians and Muslims, wicked leaders.

“Restructuring is political ideology to win 2019 election. Just like 2015 APC change ideology. “Ethnic hatred caused Biafra agitators, Niger Delta Avengers, Fulani herdsmen attack. Religion hatred caused Boko Haram insurgency; killing of Christians in the North. “Wicked leaders caused the bad economy in Nigeria. Peace is the only thing that will solve Nigeria problems.
“Only an Igbo president will bring peace, unity, good economy in Nigeria. Nigerians should hand over power to Igbo tribe.” Since the arrest of the pro-Biafra leader Nnamdi Kanu a protest movement has sprung up in Nigeria, with thousands of people identifying as Biafrans calling for the separation of some south states from Nigeria.

The rise in tensions between pro-Biafra agitators and the Nigerian authorities comes at a time when Nigeria is grappling with serious challenges. Niger Delta militants recently declare their support for Mr Kanu and also call for the referendum to decide the fate of Nigeria. The deadly Boko Haram sect killed and kidnapped people on the north of the country.
Politics / Death Of Biafra? Nnamdi-kanu’s Wife Speaks by nwatiti(m): 9:31pm On Aug 24, 2016
Uchechi Okwu-Kanu insisted her husband is firm in his stance on Biafra – She described those saying he had renounced as misguided people – The wife of the Nnamdi Kanu described him as the voice of the voiceless Uchechi Okwu-Kanu has vehemently denied report that the agitation for Biafra is dead and other report and that her husband has renounced his Biafra stance. In an interview with IBTimes UK, the wife of Nnamdi Kanu insisted that her husband was unshaking in his Biafra struggle and those saying he has renounced his Biafra struggle were “misguided minds”. Uchechi also took a swipe at the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) which had earlier claimed Kanu had renounced his Biafra struggle,

She said: “It is not in my place to tell Mend what
to do. But my advice to them is to stop peddling
such hoax in their quest for amnesty.”
Nnamdi Kanu leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra
“They obviously do not know what Nnamdi Kanu
and the Indigenous People of Biafra stand for nor

have an inkling of what freedom fighting is about. ” Uchechi described Kanu as a prisoner of
conscience and said his arrest has moved people who were once sitting on the fence to support the cause for Biafra.
“His arrest has changed the peoples’ perception
about the restoration of Biafra. Evident to this, is
the involvement of those who were not IPOB members initially. People are very much aware of the truth that lays bare and Biafrans all over the
world are fighting for him and lives have been lost during protests.”
“The Vatican Radio, Per i Diritti Umani as well as the Southeast Based Coalition of Human Rights Organization have also called for his release.”

Uchechi Okwu-Kanu “I am stronger than I ever was after the success of the birth of our son. I know freedom fighting entails sacrifices as this; he is not here physically which is what we miss, but we are inseparable spiritually.
“I want him to remain very strong and purposive; to know that Biafrans far and wide are behind him. Even in this dark time, what he represents, which is the light and truth, illuminates brighter in their minds than he can ever imagine. He is the voice for the voiceless, hope for the hopeless and those who lost their loved ones and friends and families now look up to that hope he represents.”

Politics / Re: Top 6 Things John Kerry Might Discuss With Buhari by nwatiti(m): 4:51pm On Aug 23, 2016
nwatiti:
The United States secretary of state, John Kerry
is in Nigeria to meet with the President
Muhammadu Buhari. Kerry will then meet with
five governors from the northern part of the
country.
President Buhari shakes hands with John Kerry
The meeting will take place behind closed doors,
and journalists will only be allowed in the press
gallery of Aso Rock. It was also stated that,
only videographers and photojournalists would
be granted access into the forecourt of the Villa
as well as to the meeting, which will take place
in the Grey room of the President’s office.
We present 6 important agenda that may
dominate the meeting:
1

. Boko Haram
The subject of the Boko Haram insurgency is
likely to feature prominently in the discussion.
This explains why Kerry also wants to meet with
governors from the northern part of the country
after he meets with Buhari.
This is more important especially as the recent
air strike on Boko Haram militants led to the
wounding of their proclaimed leader; Abubakar
Shekau.
2.

Internally Displaced Persons
Also the plight of Internally Displaced Persons
(IDPs) will likely be discussed , especially as
there has been reports of the suffering people
face in various IDP camps.
The UN has stated that it is aware
of the allegations of diversion of funds and relief
materials, especially food items meant for
humanitarian purposes even as the IDPs in the
North-East of the country and is investigating.

3.

Multinational task force
The multinational task force made up of soldiers
from Chad, Niger Republic, Cameroon and Benin
which was set up by countries to stop the
spread of Boko Haram and curb terror will likely
also be on the list of things to be discussed.
Recently, the Human Rights Watch has insisted
that the taskforce protect human rights as it
fights the menace of terrorism.

4. ISIS
Initially, the terror and havoc caused by
terrorists belonging to the Islamic State was
only major felt by those directly affected.
However, since Boko Haram has also declared
itself a part of ISIS, it is likely that John Kerry
will discuss this new angle of terrorism with
President Buhari.

5. Bilateral relations
It goes without saying that the main thrust of
the visit will include ways to cement the bonds
between both countries. Since the job of the
secretary of state includes taking care of foreign
policy, it is very possible that the discussion will
include how the US foreign policies will affect
Nigeria.
6. Niger Delta Avengers
The Niger Delta Avengers impasse with the
Nigerian federal government will also likely come
up in today’s discussion as it affects the
stability and security not just in the Niger Delta,
but also the entire country.
The meeting which is currently ongoing is very
likely going to impact in positive ways on
Nigeria, Nigerian policies and the ongoing fight
against insurgency.

Nairaland / General / Success Recorded In Exploration Of Oil In North As British Firm Steps In by nwatiti(m): 4:14pm On Aug 15, 2016
Northern governors employed a British firm to explore oil in the north – The search has made head way in the Chad Basin – This is expected to stop the over reliance on Niger Delta oil A British firm has been appointed by the 19 northern state governments to carry out the exploration activities for oil and gas. This move is coming two weeks after President Muhammadu Buhari gave the order to the Nigeria National Petroleum Commission (NNPC) to commence the exploration of oil in the north. The Northern Nigeria Development Company which is owned by the 19 northern states revealed that the exploration for oil and gas in the Lake Chad and Benue basins had commenced using the services of the British company. READ ALSO: Exploration of oil in north-east commenced Mallam Bashir Dalhatu who is the chairman of the development company gave detailed explanation in Katsina when the company’s board and management met with Governor Aminu Masari, during their fact-finding visit to the state “We have engaged a British company that is already working in the Lake Chad region and from Niger and Chad side in the same area with us and we have been meeting with the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation in order to put efforts together.. “The Federal Government has also re- emphasised to us, during those meetings, its total support for exploration and exploitation of oil and gas in the North-East of the country.” Dr. Ibe Kachikwu who is the minister of state for petroleum resources had said that the federal government would begin oil drilling activities in the Chad Basin from the third quarter of this year. He insisted that this move is solid and that the NNPC, through its Frontier Exploration Services and Renewable Energy Division had already progressed reasonably “with seismic acquisition activities in the Chad Basin frontier area up until insurgency necessitated the suspension of operation there.” In a statement by Garba-Deen Mohammed who is the spokesperson of the NNPC, He quoted Kachikwu as saying “eight phases out of the planned 12-phase project to cover 3,550 square kilometres had been acquired. “A total of 1,962 square kilometres have been acquired and processed, interpretation is currently ongoing at about 90 per cent completion, and drilling activities will commence by the last quarter of 2016.” Mr. Maikanti Baru who is the group managing director of the NNPC confirmed that exploration activities were going on in the frontier basin in Chad and in some areas close to the Kolmani River which is located in Bauchi. Shell has already made some indicative discovery of hydrocarbons. Baru said that the NNPC was stepping up crude oil exploration activities as they were taking steps to re-strategise and get into those regions.
Culture / When To Teach Children Sex Education by nwatiti(m): 10:45pm On Aug 14, 2016
ARUKAINO UMUKORO examines the suitable time for parents to teach their children about sex Little Ebun Joseph (not real name) was given a rude introduction into the meaning of sex in the most unimaginable way. And it stemmed from what was supposed to be a seemingly harmless question. “Daddy, what is sex?” The little girl asked one day after school. The father, who is a clergy, hushed her up gently but firmly. He told her she was not supposed to mention such a word in the house again. The inquisitive little girl sulked up to her mother and asked the same question. She got a similar response. The next day, still unsatisfied by the answers given by her parents, Ebun asked her mother’s driver as he drove her to school. “Uncle, what is sex?” In a moment of surprise, the driver’s mood was twisted by morbid fascination. He warned her not to tell her parents what he was about to teach her. The little girl innocently agreed. He decided to ‘show’ her the meaning. He raped her. She was just six years old at the time. The little girl was too scared to tell her parents. She went through that ordeal until she was 15, without the knowledge of her parents. Experts on sex matters have warned about the dangers of parents shying away from discussing sex with their children. One of them is a child sexuality educator and relationship expert, Mr. Praise Fowowe. He said there was danger in not empowering children about sex education during their impressionable years. “This is because the strength of a sex predator is the ignorance of a child. But once the child is adequately equipped with the right, appropriate knowledge about sex, it would then be impossible for a predator to molest that child. Sex education, just like charity, should start from the home,” Fowowe said. According to Science Daily , sex education “is a broad term used to describe education about human sexual anatomy, sexual reproduction, sexual intercourse, and other aspects of human sexual behaviour.” Fowowe further explained that sex education for children must consider the well-being of a child. “This includes letting them aware of their body parts, and how they respond and react to things about their bodies,” he said. Also, a counselling and developmental psychologist at the Department of Counselling and Human Development Studies, University of Ibadan, Oyo State, Prof. Ajibola Falaye, advised parents to introduce sex education to children when they started to ask curious questions about their bodies and the making of babies. She stated, ‘‘From psychology, we know that some form of basic sex education should begin from between the ages of three to six. Some children start having immature sex feelings at a young age. When children ask questions about anatomical differences in gender, parents should be able to explain to them with straightforward answers, and not muddled interpretation. “You don’t have to give too many details to children about sex. It should be said in a way that children can understand and appreciate.” However, sex education remains a controversial issue, especially in this clime where some, for religious leanings and fears, believe that children, at whatever age, should not be taught about sex or anything remotely related to it. A parenting counsellor and children life coach, Mr. Kingsley Obom-Egbulem, said some people have kicked against teaching children about the issues related to sex because of the word ‘sex.’ He said, “Some people have been kicking against sex education because they believe that when one uses the word sex, one is actually talking about sexual intercourse and not just the anatomy. But when it comes to children, I believe parents should start telling their children about their private body parts as from the age of one or two. This would help the child to understand his or her body as he or she grows up.” Obom-Egbulem likened such basic sex education to ‘arming children against abuse.” He stated, “Sexual abuse is a real concern at that level. We should draw a line between sex education and sexual intercourse. Parents should help their children to become familiar and comfortable with their body parts. For child rights activist, Mrs. Helen Oshikoya, sex education should be taught at the appropriate time, from the puberty ages between of 11 and 13. Oshikoya however noted that sexual awareness should not be introduced earlier. She said, “Children should be made to be aware of the basics about their body parts. Also, one can inform them that if they are touched inappropriately or gestures of sexual contents are made to them, they should report such to their parents.” Besides, Fowowe added that sex education should begin at different stages. He explained further: “There is what is called age appropriation sexual education, The first stage can start when the child is between 18 months and three years, the next stage is from ages three to five; then five to eight, eight to 12, and from 13 to 18. At these different stages, the children are taught different basics about sex and values according to the age and maturity.’’ He also said, “The challenge is that when parents hear of sexual education, they think it is connotes teaching them about penetration sex. That is not even involved until the child is old enough, at about 13 or 14. From the age of three for example, the child needs to be taught about the body parts, and the proper names and differences between private and public body parts and how to handle the parts. For the younger ages, story-telling, role plays and songs are good methods to use in teaching them basic sex education. From five years upwards, the format changes, which includes, ‘fire on the mountain’ – what children should avoid, and so on.” Falaye said parents should take it as a responsibility to teach their children basic sex education, and not leave it to others to teach them. She noted that the lack of sex education and awareness of the issue had led to several problems plaguing children and society. She said, “Experimentation in adolescence and peer influence causes a lot of misguided sexual actions. That’s why there should be mother- daughter, father-son communication on sex education, and let them know the right information. Research has shown that when there is good mother-daughter communication on sex, the girl is wholesome as far as sex behaviour is concerned. It is the same with the father-son relationship.” On her part, Founder, Media Concern Initiative, Princess Olufemi-Kayode, agreed with Falaye, adding that the best time to teach sex education should be immediately the child started inquiring about it. She said, ‘‘It is the best time to start teaching one’s child about basic sex education also called sexuality or life skill education, just like one tells children that they should stay away from fire and the reasons why; because today’s children are more advanced and their curiosity is more heightened.” Olufemi-Kayode noted that parents should also get some needed education to give their kids better education on issues of sex. Fowowe also noted that it was needful for parents to begin giving their children sex education at an early age because of the rate of sexual exposure from outside sources, including television, Internet and from peers. Also speaking, a parent, Mr. John Adewuyi, said it was proper to teach children sex education at early ages in order for them to be empowered sexually as they advance in age. “This includes teaching them about their body parts and why daddy is different from mummy,”he said. Another parent, Mrs. Ronke Johnson, who has three children, said she would only start teaching her children about sex before the age of 10. “But I will start earlier with my girls, because of the moral decadence in the society,” she said. Family corner Dear ma, I have a step father who comes to my room every time my mother is not around and tells me to lick his manhood. If I deny, he will beat me with his belt. I tried telling my mother but she did not believe me. She said I wanted to ruin her marriage. Please, what should I do? Banke, 13 My dear, first, I want you to know that there are some children passing through your situation. Some others have overcome their storm. Never think that what your step father is doing to you is your fault in anyway. Now, going back to your mother may be fruitless, hence I want you to look for an adult you can confide in. There should be someone who is close to your mother and who she respects. I am very sure there is one like that. I also want you to avoid being alone with your step father. If you have a close family friend, plead with your mother that you would want to visit the person, maybe on a daily basis or you ask the person to visit your home. Also, try to convince your mother that you want to engage in summer lessons. The whole point is to avoid being alone with your step father till you are able to get someone who can speak to your mother. You should also be careful not to discuss the issue anyhow so as not to draw the anger of your mother when it becomes public knowledge. Dear ma, I have a bad habit of stealing from my mother’s purse. Any time I ask her for money, she gives it to me but I always want more. On several occasions, she caught me. She is deeply pained by my habit. How do I stop? Yomi, 15 You need to go back to your mother and cry out to her. Tell her that you want to stop the bad habit; let her know that you are done with stealing from her. Meanwhile, whenever you are tempted to steal, consciously walk away from the house. Take a walk or go sit outside. You also need to turn a blind eye to things you do not need. It is not everything you want that you should buy. It is important you put a stop to this habit, if not, it could aggravate to something else. Dear ma, sometimes I think my father loves my younger sister more than me. He is always buying her things. Whenever she asks for something, he is quick to give her money. Yet, when I approach him, he shuns me or tells me he does not have. I feel bad about it. Ore, 16 I am very sure your father loves both of you equally. He probably sees you as being the older sibling and that you should be more mature about things. Since she is younger than you, he probably wants to pamper her. You could stylishly let him know how you feel. Also, inform your mother about your feelings. I am sure she would speak to your father about it. In the meantime, see your younger sister as your baby. Love and care for her since you are older and she needs your care. Copyright PUNCH. All rights reserved. Nairaland / General / IPOB Sack Defence Team For Misleading The Public by nwatiti(m): 11:17pm On Aug 12, 2016
The Indigenous People Of Biafra (IPOB) has released a press statement concerning Nnamdi Kanu’s position on the Niger Delta Avengers (NDA) and federal government negotiations – The leader of the separatist group jointly with other IPOB members have sacked its lawyers for misleading general public on their relationship with the NDA The official press statement released on August 12 and signed by Barrister Emma Nmezu, Dr. Clifford Chukwuemeka Iroanya, the spokespersons for IPOB, reads in part: “Following the press conference earlier today by our legal team, the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) Worldwide has been reliably and incontrovertibly informed that some of the utterances of their defence lawyers were made without consultation. These utterances border on negotiations and some were against the Niger Delta Avengers
As a result of this unsolicited and unguarded
utterances, the defence team has been sacked and will be replaced. The IPOB leader wishes to state categorically that the only thing we are open to is negotiations that will lead to
modalities and processes to restore Biafra and avert further hardships on the people of Nigeria who have been under bondage since his kidnapping and illegal detention.
The Niger Delta Avengers arose because of the inherent injustice in Nigeria as manifested in the disregard to the rule of law when Buhari refused to obey court order to unconditionally release our leader, Nnamdi Kanu. We spoke the mind of our leader when we stated for record purposes that IPOB and Niger Delta Avengers share the same ideology of freedom for Biafra. Anybody publicly dissociating IPOB from Niger Delta Avengers is a mortal enemy of IPOB family worldwide under the leadership of Nnamdi Kanu. Let it be known that as long as Buhari and Daura continue to tamper with Nnamdi Kanu‘s defence team through bribery, inducements and intimidation, IPOB will keep on changing the team.
For the records, the press conference by the now-sacked legal team was about bringing to public knowledge the foolishness of the Department of State Services (DSS) in bringing treasonable felony charges against our leader and the lack of evidence thereof. The press conference was NEVER about negotiations because should negotiations start, IPOB will notify the world about it. Right now, we are not negotiating and will not negotiate until existing court orders ordering the release of Nnamdi Kanu are obeyed. In the interim, Barrister Ifeanyi Ejiofor will continue to act as lead counsel until other counsels are appointed who will not sell their souls to the devil. Biafra or death!!!”

Nairaland / General / MUST READ: Dear President Buhari, Nigeria’s Unity Is Negotiable! by nwatiti(m): 1:18pm On Jul 12, 2016
Editor’s note: President Muhammadu Buhari while addressing guests who visited the presidential villa for the Sallah celebration has said that Nigeria’s unity is not negotiable. Chido Onumah argues with the president saying that for survival of Nigeria the issue of restructuring the country must be discussed. Restructuring for Nigeria’s national unity Since the public presentation of the book We Are All Biafrans and the intervention of a former vice president of Nigeria, Atiku Abubakar, who chaired the event and delivered a speech titled “ Restructuring for Nigeria’s national unity ” – a speech I recommend to everyone interested in the unity and survival of Nigeria – the issue of restructuring Nigeria and negotiating its unity has once again taken the centre stage of national discourse. Former VP Atiku Abubakar and President Muhammadu Buhari No less a person than President Muhammadu Buhari has had to weigh in on the debate. During his Eid el-Fitr message to Nigerians on Wednesday, July 6, 2016, he was reported to have said: “ I assure them (in reference to the Niger Delta ‘militants’) that when we were very junior officers, we were told by our leaders, by the Head of State, Gen. Gowon, that to keep Nigeria one is a task that must be done…we never thought of oil. What we were after is one Nigeria. Please, pass the message to the militants that one Nigeria is not negotiable. And I pray they better accept it. The constitution is very clear…I assure them there would be justice.” Before President Buhari’s admonition, Nobel Laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka, had noted during a parley with The Punch on Tuesday, June 28, 2016: “ I am on the side of those who say we must do everything to avoid disintegration. That language I understand. I don’t understand (ex- President Olusegun) Obasanjo’s language. I don’t understand (President Muhammadu) Buhari’s language and all their predecessors, saying the sovereignty of this nation is non-negotiable. It’s bloody well negotiable and we had better negotiate it. We better negotiate it, not even at meetings, not at conferences, but every day in our conduct towards one another.” A cautionary note to the left, progressives and genuine patriots in Nigeria The opinions of these two prominent Nigerians reflect the two divergent opinions on the issue of restructuring Nigeria or negotiating her unity. I had planned this article – that was before President Buhari’s remarks – as a cautionary note to the left, progressives and genuine patriots in Nigeria. I believe they are the only ones predisposed and sincerely open to solving the current crisis. Regrettably, this is one issue that has divided the Left, progressives and patriots in Nigeria. This division has defined the kind of response – ranging from obfuscation and doublespeak to outright denial and combativeness – that has made it impossible to have a coherent national narrative and action plan. Since those who ought to speak out and act have maintained criminal silence and indifference, they have yielded the space to conservative analysts of every hue, hypocrites, blackmailers, anarchists, and fifth columnists. Nigeria is not working for Nigerians So what are the issues in contention? There seems to be a general agreement, even among those who brought us to this near-tragic end that Nigeria is not working for Nigerians. However, and this is where the divergence of opinions sets in, Nigeria is not working not because it is not workable, but because it has been rigged to fail. Take the issue of the civil war (1967-70) which President Buhari alluded to. That war was fought in part because of natural resources (oil specifically). That was the driving force of the so-called federal offensive and to some extent it also defined the geo- politics of what would become the secessionist Republic of Biafra. After 30 months of fighting and millions of lives lost, there was a “negotiated” settlement. A truce was declared with the catchphrase “No victor; No vanquished.” Unfortunately, 46 years after the end of that internecine war, low-intensity conflicts by state and non-state actors are raging across the country, from Boko Haram in the North-east, Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN) and Arewa People’s Congress (APC) in the North-west, the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and other groups in the South-east, the Niger Delta Avengers and Bakassi Strike Force (BSF) in the South-south to the Oodua Peoples Congress (OPC) in the South-west and potential avengers in the North-central. What this tells us is that that war didn’t really end and hasn’t ended. What then do we do to fix Nigeria? The simple answer would be to return to the negotiation table. What we should do to fix Nigeria To be clear, Nigeria has always been negotiated. The problem has been that the “victors” or those who control power at each round of negotiation have unilaterally defined the structure and politics of the country going forward. Again, I return to the issue of oil. Before independence in 1960, this was the “sharing” formula for crude oil revenues: Oil producing states (region) retained 67.4% of revenues , the federal government got 20%, non- oil states (regions) got 12.6% . After the civil in 1970, the regime of Gen Yakubu Gowon through Decree No. 13 “negotiated” a new formula: Oil producing states retained 45% of revenues; the federal government got 55% while non-oil states got 0%. In 1975, the regime of Gen Murtala Muhammed in another round of negotiation through Decree 6, came up with this formula: Oil producing states would retain 20% of revenues, the federal government got 80% and non-oil states got 0%. In 1976, Gen Obasanjo, then military dictator, in his omniscience, gave oil producing states 0% of revenues while the federal government got 100% and the non-oil states got 0%. President Shehu Shagari who came to power in 1979 brought a bizarre twist to the “sharing” formula. He retained the Obasanjo formula of 0% allocation to oil producing states and 100% to the federal government to be shared in this order: 50% shared equally among states, 40% shared based on population and 10% based on land mass. By 2000, during the reincarnation of Gen. Obasanjo as civilian president, a new revenue sharing formula was negotiated which gave oil producing states 13%. Pro-Biafra activists As Prof. Yakubu Aboki Ochefu notes in the introduction to the book Nigeria is Negotiable , “Beginning from the Berlin West Africa Conference of 1884-85, the ‘negotiated’ existence of what eventually became Nigeria in 1914 (unfortunately, negotiated without the input of those who would eventually become Nigerians) has always been a part of its historical experience. Under British colonial rule, the economic and administrative structures of the country were continuously rejigged until independence in 1960. “Between the official versions of the decolonisation history that gives a prominent role to our nationalist heroes for winning independence from the British, to others who believe in the ‘conspiracy theory’ of decolonisation, the process of how the region with the least democratic credentials ended up as the driver of a new democratic enterprise epitomizes aspects of the negotiated experience. As a country on its ‘third missionary’ journey to a truly democratic nation, the fundamental questions of nation building that began over 100 years ago have not been fully and or properly answered. We must collectively negotiate to ensure that we retain the map (of Nigeria) but change the way we exist under that map.” On April 22, 1990, a group of young Nigerian army officers – mainly from a section of the country (the same army President Buhari told us last week fought to keep Nigeria one) – attempted to overthrow the military regime of Gen Ibrahim Babangida. While that abortive coup lasted, the rebellious soldiers excised five states of the federation – Sokoto, Borno, Katsina, Kano and Bauchi. That coup and the excision order were popular and well-received in many parts of the country. Clearly, if that coup had succeeded, the aftermath would have been another civil war. Gen. Babangida responded to that mutiny by dividing Nigeria into 30 states from 21 (just as Yakubu Gowon divided Nigeria into 12 states from four regions in 1967 to weaken the Biafra secession). When people call for restructuring Nigeria, they make the call for a reason Having told ourselves a few historical home truths, let us quickly avail ourselves of one more opportunity to reclaim Nigeria. When people call for restructuring Nigeria, they make the call for a reason. And it should not be dismissed peremptorily. The rulers of the country use every opportunity to speak about the unity of Nigeria and hardly do anything to build or enhance that unity. I don’t think the issue really is about the unity of Nigeria. Undoubtedly, many Nigerians want to live in a united Nigeria. It is important, therefore, that we do not conflate the issues. The call for restructuring Nigeria has nothing to do with the “dissolution” of Nigeria. You can believe that “Nigeria is non-negotiable” and still support the call for restructuring the country. That call is basically about building an inclusive and equitable nation; one in which your worth and position are determined not by where you come from or your religion; a nation founded on a popular constitution validated by “we the people”. On a final note, let me emphasize that restructuring Nigeria has become a “categorical imperative” for the country. It is either we restructure or perish! Restructuring Nigeria is not an elitist concept (even if it is sometimes used by sections of the ruling elite to negotiate power) neither is it about splitting Nigeria. We can restructure (or negotiate) Nigeria without changing the internal map of the country; it is more about resource control rather than resource allocation; more about devolution of power and, therefore, responsibilities. It is about enhancing citizenship rights and the existential confidence in the country. Of course, restructuring Nigeria is not a silver bullet or cure-all for our problems. But we can’t take on our problems as a nation without a generally acceptable and workable structure. In a sentence, we MUST “re-federalize”.

I am convinced and firmly believe that the occupation gambari and their collaborators in the Nigerian state led by General Muhammadu Buhari is not interested in any or in any type of peace in Ijaw, the Niger Delta Region, In the Territories of the United States of Biafra or even in any part of Nigeria. The body language of General Muhammadu Buhari is to carry out a genocide and a pogrom against the Ijaw, Niger Delta and the United States of Biafra (USB). Therefore, there is no way I will be hoodwinked to be part of any sham that the government of the Nigerian state led General Muhammadu Buhari is masquerading as negotiation or dialogue that will lead to peace in the aforesaid territories….The same way the bride Amnesty was introduced-which I and the volunteers rejected-was used to bribe the faint hearted amongst our compatriots, the cult gangs and fraternities, and the criminal elements in the Niger Delta to allow the our hydro carbon resources-which is our God given and exclusively belong to us- to be freely extracted to satisfy the extravagant and immoral appetite of the gambari and their collaborators…Today most of the recipients of the Amnesty bribe are full of regrets and wish that they turn back the hands of clock. Nairaland / General / Nasarawa To Replace Striking Workers With Fresh Graduates by nwatiti(m): 10:28pm On Jul 09, 2016
Nassarawa State Governor, Tanko Al-Makura, on Saturday threatened to recruit fresh graduates to replace workers in the state currently on strike over non-payment of their salary. The governor issued the threat in Nassarawa Eggon at the celebration of the 35th coronation anniversary of Aren Eggon, Dr Bala Angbazo. He, however, appealed to the workers to return to work, recalling that the state was among the first in the country to implement the N18,000 minimum wage in 2011. He commended the Aren Eggon for his contributions toward the sustenance of peace in the state and urged the people to support the government and the traditional rulers in the effort, regardless of religious and political affiliations. “I want to appeal to the striking workers to go back to work as the decision by the state government to review their salary downward was a result of dwindling economy. ``It is also caused by the fall in the price of crude oil and declining allocation from the Federation Account. “The state government will take stock of attendance of striking workers that return to work and invite applications from graduates in order to replace those still on strike,” the governor said. He explained that the downward review of the workers' salary was to accommodate other sectors of the economy as well as develop infrastructure in the state. In his good will message, Mr James Ali-Manza, the National President of Eggon Cultural and Development Association (ECDA), said that the association would continue to support government policies. Earlier, the Sole Administrator of Nassarawa Eggon Local Government Area, Mr Akolo Success, said that the anniversary was organized to thank God for his protection and guidance for the monarch in his 35 years on the throne. He said that the council would continue to partner traditional institution to promote peace in the state, adding that without peace, no nation could achieve development. In his remarks, the monarch thanked God for giving him good health, long life and prosperous reign and pledged to continue to promote peace and harmonious coexistence of all people in his domain. News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that some of the dignitaries at the occasion were Senators Jerry Hussieni, Joshua Dariye, Abduallahi Adamu and Solomon Ewuga.

Ukwa-Ngwa youths in Abia state vows to use their last blood to defend the mandate given to Governor Ikpeazu – The youths alleges there is a plot to set to state ablaze – They urge President Buhari to wade into the matter to avert brewing crisis in the state A body of all youths in Ukwa/Ngwa in Abia state, the Supreme Council of Ukwa-Ngwa Youths, has alleged that there is a plot to set the state ablaze, even as it vowed to defend the mandate of Governor Okezie Ikpeazu. Kingsley Okadigbo, the national co-ordinator of the group made this known in a statement on Thursday, July 7 and made available to The Punch. According to him, Ikpeazu is the first governor of Ukwa-Ngwa extraction in Abia state, hence, the youths are ready to use their last blood to defend the mandate freely given to him. It is a clear case of judicial rape of democracy in Nigeria, an act we shall vehemently resist by whatever means possible. No man is born violent or a militant. “The security and safety of oil and gas facilities and the staff of the operational joint venture companies in Ukwa-Ngwa nation can no longer be guaranteed, if issues raised here-in are not redressed in consonance with the rule of law and diligent due process. “Our peaceful disposition should not be taken for granted, as we call on forces behind orchestrated plot to set Abia state ablaze to desist from doing that henceforth and give peace a chance.” The youth’s body passed a vote of confidence on Governor Ikpeazu, adding that the mandate, as freely given, “ is one thing” they were prepared to defend with the last drop of their blood. “We will use the last blood of our bodies as youths of the nine LGAs out of 17 to defend the mandate freely given to him.” The court, presided over by Justice Okon Abang, on Monday, June 26, ordered Governor Okezie Ikpeazu to vacate office as governor over the case of tax evasion. Justice Abang also ordered that Sampson Ogah, who came second in the PDP primaries, should be sworn in as the governor. Ogah was also issued the Certificate of Return by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Abuja on Thursday, June 30, but he his hopes were dashed following an injunction by the Abia state High Court forbidding his swearing in.

Nairaland / General / Ebonyi Plans One Man, One Hectare Agric Programme by nwatiti(m): 10:23pm On Jul 07, 2016
The Ebonyi government says it will launch an agricultural programme tagged, ‘one-man-one hectare’ in August to enable its citizens participate actively in its agricultural revolution. Governor David Umahi made the declaration on Thursday in Abakaliki during at agricultural summit organised for civil and public servants in the state. According to him, emphasis would be placed on rice production as civil and public servants would join other strata of the society in cultivating at least one hectare of rice farm yearly. “The state is fast losing its rating as the highest rice producing state in the country, but the government is determined to halt the slide. “The government is planning to introduce six mega-rice cities in the state and any Local Government Area (LGA) that covers 5, 000 hectares of land for rice production would benefit from the interventions. “We would inaugurate irrigation facilities, social amenities, rice husk power plants, rice mills, among others, in such areas with active collaboration of the World Bank and the Central Bank of Nigeria,” he said. The governor urged civil servants to key into the agricultural revolution, adding that N1billion has been earmarked to support farmers in achieving massive crop production. “We have provided improved seedlings, soft loans, fertilizers, among others, to farmers while the state has been covered in the various agricultural policies of the Federal Government. “Rice farmers now have improved proceeds from their rice production activities as the federal government has ensured that the era of importing chaffs in the name of foreign rice is gone. “That is the reason for the adoption of mechanized form of agriculture in our revolution plans, as it will lead to commercial production with the procurement of modern equipment such as tractors and harvesters.” Mr. Frank Ogbuewu, a former Nigeria’s Ambassador to Greece urged civil servants to embrace agriculture as an alternative source of livelihood. “I have occupied top political offices in the country but still embraced agriculture with the cultivation of over 110 hectares of land yearly. “The government however, should provide farmers with necessary incentives such as soft loans, fertilizers, seedlings, good roads to convey farm produce, available markets for produce, among others,” he said. Also speaking, Mr Uchenna Orji, the Commissioner for Agriculture and Natural Resources, urged civil servants to identify with the programme for the overall development of the state. Dr Chamberlain Nwele, the Head of Service, said civil servants were mobilised for the programme to enable them go back to the farm. Mrs Kate Ekpa, a civil servant, commended the government for the initiative and called for more motivation to ensure maximum participation. Nairaland / General / U.S Has Declared War, Says North Korea by nwatiti(m): 10:09pm On Jul 07, 2016
North Korea said Friday that the new US sanctions targeting its leader Kim Jong-Un amounted to a “declaration of a war” and vowed to take strong retaliatory measures. The move by the United States constituted “the worst hostility” against the North, Pyongyang’s foreign ministry said in a statement, carried by the official Korean Central News Agency. Washington on Wednesday placed Kim on its sanctions blacklist, calling him directly responsible for a long list of serious human rights abuses. The sanctions are the first that name the country’s “Supreme Leader”, as well as the first targeting the reclusive state for rights violations. In its first reaction to the move, Pyongyang urged Washington to retract the sanctions immediately, warning that the North would instantly cut off “every lever and channel for diplomatic contact” between the two countries if the US failed to do so. “The US dared challenge the dignity of the DPRK supreme leadership, an act reminiscent of a new-born puppy knowing no fear of a tiger,” the statement said, using the official acronym for North Korea. “This is the worst hostility and an open declaration of war against the DPRK as it has gone far beyond the confrontation over the ‘human rights issue’.” “Now that the US declared a war on the DPRK, any problem arising in the relations with the US will be handled under the latter’s wartime law,” it said. Strongly worded retaliation by Pyongyang is not unusual, and it has previously described actions by the US and neighbouring South Korea as declarations of war. But the reference to “wartime law” is rare, and suggests Pyongyang will officially treat the US as if they are engaged in a conflict. The statement said the reclusive nation will take “the toughest countermeasures to resolutely shatter the hostility of the US”, but did not elaborating on what this could entail. – Personal insult – Ten other top Pyongyang officials were also blacklisted by the US on Wednesday, accused of being behind widespread abuses that have made North Korea “among the world’s most repressive countries”. South Korea on welcomed the move by the US, saying it hoped it would shine a light on human rights “violations” in the North. South Korean analysts had anticipated that the North would react angrily to what they would likely perceive as a “personal insult” against Kim. Kim, who took power four and a half years ago after the death of his father Kim Jong-Il, is the subject of a personality cult that permeates every aspect of life in the repressive state. “There will be a bombardment of diatribes from North Korea against the US as the military, government agencies and various social groups are likely to fall over themselves to prove their loyalty to Kim”, Professor Yang Moo-Jin of the University of North Korean Studies told AFP. But, he said, the North would probably wait until the start of the annual joint US-South Korea military exercises that begin in August to flex its military muscle. Professor Kim Yong-Hyun of Dongguk University said the North would ratchet up tension but it would stop short of conducting another nuclear test to avoid further alienating its main ally and economic benefactor China. The international community has issued to a series of increasingly harsh sanctions on North Korea this year linked to its nuclear programme. Pyongyang conducted its fourth nuclear test in January and a missile test, disguised as a satellite launch, in the following month

Speaking at a parley with media executives on Sunday, Ambode said the ever increasing population of the state meant that it had to be “on its toes” to provide facilities for its more than 23 million population. He said the state was currently sourcing 76 per cent of what it was spending through IGR, adding that Lagos aspires to intensify internally generated revenue (IGR), so that it could reduce its dependence on federal allocated revenue to less than 10 per cent within the next two years. He noted that a situation whereby 27 states of Nigeria were bankrupt and 32 states generate less than 10 per cent of federal allocated revenue meant there were dislocations. Ambode said the challenges facing the state in the areas of refuse disposal, education, security and the others, were being tackled frontally as a safer and cleaner environment would guarantee more prosperity. He promised that within the next six months, technology would be deployed to ensure that more streets were lit and strategic areas have CCTV coverage. The governor also said that education, healthcare, care of the aged and employment would be given more attention, noting that 67 per cent of the state population was under age 35. Ambode also promised that 5000 buses would be purchased, in partnership with the private sector, to pave way for the phasing out of commercial motorcycles, tricycles and mini-buses currently defacing the metropolis. He explained that the move would not increase unemployment as most of the mini-bus drivers would be retrained and re-orientated to man the new buses. The governor disclosed that he was picking a lot of advice from the media on how to govern, and appealed for more collaboration in the vision of moving the state forward.
Nairaland / General / How To Stop That Snoring Habit by nwatiti(m): 6:40pm On Jul 06, 2016
Snoring is often natural sometimes, as it was confirmed it normally happen due to the physical or mental stress they have during the day. However, this has become an habit for some people. There are some simple changes you can make to minimise snoring. You can get rid of snoring in less time if you practice the tips and instructions below: Maintain A Healthy Weight And Balanced Diet Being overweight can lead to snoring. This is because the fatty tissues around your neck prevents the airway and blocks air from flowing freely in throat. This can be controlled by changing your sleeping position. Try to sleep on your side rather than your back because sleeping on your back will make your tongue, chin and any excess fatty tissue under your chin relax while they disturb your airway. Side sleep prevents this. Avoid Unnecessary Intake Of Alcohol Alcohol causes your muscles to relax more than usual during a normal night-sleep which makes the thraot more readily open. This cause you to snor through out the night. Quit Smoking Cigarette smoke irritates the lining of the nasal cavity and throat, causing swelling and catarrh. If the nasal passages become congested, it becomes difficult to breathe in and out because the nostril spaces are not free. Keep your nasal passages clear, so that you breathe in through your nose rather than your mouth. If an allergy is blocking your nose, tryantihistamine tablets or a nasal spray. Consult for physician for more help and support. Stop-snoring Devices There are a range of stop-snoring treatments and devices on sale. These include nasal strips, which open the nostrils wider, throat sprays and devices known as mandibular advancement devices (MAD), which reposition the jaw to ease airflow - Your physician can te

Nairaland / General / APC Chieftain’s Open Letter To First Lady: When Are You Going To Clear Your Name by nwatiti(m): 5:16pm On Jul 03, 2016
Editor’s note: The accusation from Governor Ayodele Fayose accusing Mrs Aisha Buhari of being a part of the infamous Jefferson bribery scandal has thrown dust as the seeming impeccable first lady. In this open letter Rt Hon. Taiwo Olatunbosun who is the publicity secretary of the All Progressives Congress in Ekiti, he urged the first lady to clear her name and come out clean to Nigerians on where she stands and her role in the allegation. The letter Dear Madam First Lady, Firstly, I have to confess I am a true Partisan of you and I respect you a lot. Your beauty and intelligence has made you a role model to many. The kindness of your heart and your selfless character has made the dried field swirl again. I salute the First Lady, a woman of Beauty and Brain. Wife of the president, Aisha Buhari READ ALSO: Does Aisha Buhari plan to visit USA after rift with Fayose? I am glad to write you this letter as your fan and rightful Citizen of this great Country, Nigeria. As regards Governor Ayodele Fayose’s allegation against you as an abettor in the Halliburton Scandal which landed Mr. Jeferson in jail, I like you to please explain to me how come this coincidence. August 5, 2009, Mr Jeferson was convicted of eleven counts including conspiracy to commit bribery, deprivation of honest services by wire fraud, and violations of the Foreign Corrupt Practices. Mr Jeferson reported to federal prison in Beautmont, Texas to begin his 13 years sentence, 4th of May, 2012. However, Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti State on Monday, 20th of June, 2016, distributed a statement which contained excerpts of court documents. In the statement, he claimed that you were an accomplice in the bribery scandal that landed Mr. Jefferson in jail, adding a link to the documents sourced from the United States Department of Justice Website (Link). After taken a close look at the allegation and also the international passport data page which went viral on social media some days back, the cleaned owner of the passport bears your name and as well originated from your State. I seize to understand how easy it is to locate someone with the First lady’s full name and also from the same state of Origin if not the First Lady. This confuse (sic) me and most of your enthusiasts. A lady in the United States of America came up with a story to claim the passport was forged. I really doubt if that was enough to make Nigerians believe you are clean. Most importantly, this allegation is now being used to discredit our party, APC in Ekiti State in particular and in Nigeria as a whole. Nigeria’s first lady, Aisha Buhari

Nigerians were further taken aback when you failed to make your highly advertised trip to the United States of America to attend the World First Ladies Conference on June 30. Most of us, your fans felt so disappointed because we were looking forward to seeing you putting Governor Fayose to permanent shame that day. Nigerians are now saying that truly, you cannot enter the US without being arrested, this is a source of worry for us. I therefore wonder if the First Lady, Mrs. Aisha Buhari, would give more deductive and valid argument to cleanse herself form this scandal. We need more than words of mouth to believe we are truly safe from corruption….. Thank you ma. This opinion first appeared in Scannews. This article expresses the authors’ opinion only
