Education / 71 Cultists Suspended From Secondary School Etoi, Uyo For Trying To Burn School by nwokoromercyme(f): 8:06am On Nov 22, 2019
A total of 71 pupils of the Government Secondary School, Etoi in Uyo Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State have been suspended for allegedly attempting to burn down the school.

It was gathered that some pupils alleged to be members of a cult group took the law into their hands and vandalised the school property.

The pupils also held the Principal hostage for several hours and attacked security personnel in the school.

The Commissioner for Education, Prof Nse Essien, announced the suspension when he led some management staff of the ministry and other stakeholders in the education sector to assess the situation, with a view to proffering a lasting solution.

Expressing his dismay at the attitude of the pupils, Essien said the school was the right of everyone and it should be protected. He said the Akwa Ibom State Government would not fold its hands and allow hooligans take over the school.

The commissioner added that anybody found culpable would be severely punished.

Stressing that those who took part in the incident were not bonafide pupils of the school, he called for the cooperation of all, including the security agencies, to fish out the bad eggs.

“All the 71 pupils will be suspended indefinitely for their part in the acts of violence and insubordination, except proven otherwise.

“We got some of the names through intelligence. This measure is meant to sanitise the system and serve as deterrent to others” he said.

He added that the final-year pupils among them would have their names removed from the list of WASSCE candidates to further buttress government’s zero tolerance for indiscipline.

The commissioner blamed the teachers for the poor upbringing of the affected pupils, which he claimed had contributed to their actions.

“As teachers, it is your job to instill discipline in the pupils and to forestall a breakdown of law and order in our schools. Any teacher who is accustomed to lateness, negligence of duty and other forms of misdemeanor will face serious sanctions”, he said.

NYSC / Family Of Late Corper Kemisola Adeniran Receives N1.9M From INEC by nwokoromercyme(f): 8:03am On Nov 20, 2019
Family of the late corps member who died during the Oyo state electoral process has received N1.9 million cheque from INEC.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) presented a cheque of N1.9 million to the family of Late corps member, Miss Kemisola Adeniran.. The cheque was presented to the deceased’s next of kin and sister, Mrs Folasade Adeyemi, at INEC office in Ibadan on Tuesday.
Recall that the late Adeniran, died in February in road accident while returning home from INEC training and was serving in Ona-Ara Local Government Area of Oyo State.

According to Dr Mutiu Agboke, the State Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), said that the commission had acted in line with its life insurance policy for election officials, including adhoc personnel before and during elections.

“On behalf of the commission and entire INEC staff in Oyo State, I wish to express my profound deep regret for the loss of our illustrious daughter/corps member.

“We also express the sincere condolence of the commission to the family over this irreparable loss.
“Though the commission’s insurance policy makes provision for both permanent and adhoc staff, nothing can be counted worthy for the life lost.

“This presentation of token is just to cushion the effect of this irreparable loss to the deceased family,” he said.

The REC appreciated the invaluable services rendered by corps members, saying that INEC would continue to honour its part of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with NYSC. He enjoined all stakeholders, particularly the media and security agencies, to collaborate with INEC to establish violence-free electioneering process. Agboke called on politicians to eschew both electoral and political violence, urging them and supporters to desist from fake news as well as hate speeches.

Politics / I Tried To Meet Jonathan 16 Times, But He Choose To Support APC – Gov Dickson by nwokoromercyme(f): 7:05am On Nov 20, 2019
Bayelsa State Governor, Seriake Dickson has reacted to the controversial loss of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) during Saturday’s governorship election in the state.

On Monday, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announced that the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), David Lyon has won the highest number of votes in Bayelsa governorship election.

While addressing a world press conference in Yenagoa on Tuesday, November 19, 2019, Dickson insisted that the election was a charade and a carefully orchestrated plan to forcefully take over Bayelsa state towards entrenching a one-party system.

Governor Dickson further alleged that former President Goodluck Jonathan was used by the APC against the PDP in the election.

He said the endorsement of David Lyon by Jonathan was regrettable and a part of the ploy by the APC to strategically take over the state.

He vowed that the PDP would challenge the result of November 16 Bayelsa governorship election in court.

“Our candidate, Sen. Douye Diri and the party chairman have been speaking about the charade called election that took place in Bayelsa on Saturday, and the invasion of our state by security forces.

“The dehumanisation of our people and how the majority of the areas and in places, where our people were denied the right to vote for the candidate of their choice.

“The story is all out there that what took place in the state on Nov. 16 was not a democratic election.

“So, today, I’m here to add my voice to all that has been said already, and it was so brazen, it has never been like this in this state before,” he said.

Dickson added: “I know that in 2015, we went through a very though time, there was displayed of federal might, but at least, it was not as bad as this.”

He said that the perception that he alienated PDP stakeholders including the former president was unfounded adding that the primary election that produced the PDP candidate was credible.

“Jonathan remains my oga and I respect him, but there are lots of efforts by certain interest to create a rift between us, there is no politician that has been there for the former president than me.

“He has also helped me but it is unfortunate that I am being misconstrued in this matter of the election, I tried to meet Jonathan for 16 times and he opted to support a candidate that does not wish me well.

“I will soon write my memoirs and people will have a fair view of what happened, the visit of some APC governors to Jonathan who congratulated the APC candidate without congratulating the candidate of his party.

“It is strategic for APC leaders to use Jonathan to legitimise the illegitimacy that happened on Saturday,” Dickson said.

The Court of Appeal sitting in Kaduna, on Tuesday, sacked two Kaduna State House of Assembly members.

The appelate court ordered that a rerun be conducted by INEC to determine who will represent Kagarko and Sanga constituencies in the state assembly.

In Kagarko, the appellate court ordered for a rerun in 22 polling units located in two wards of the constituency.

In the judgement read by Justice Daniel Kaliop, the appellate court affirmed the earlier ruling of the state assembly election Tribunal in respect of Kagarko constituency.

News Agency of Nigeria recalled that Mr. Nuhu Shadalafiya of the All Progressives Congress (APC) had challenged the victory of Mr Morondia Tanko of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the March 9 election at the Tribunal.

The Tribunal had ordered for fresh election in the 22 polling units, but Tanko of the PDP ran to the Appeal Court, asking it to set aside the tribunal judgement and affirm his election as declared by INEC.

The Appeal Court in a unanimous decision dismissed the case for lacking in merit and ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct fresh election in the 22 polling units.

Counsel to Shadalafiya, Mr Ussy Edikhiola said they were happy with the appeal court’s judgement, describing it as the triumph of the rule of law.

Similarly, the Appeal Court has ordered for re run in Sanga constituency after it upturned the earlier ruling of the Tribunal, which affirmed the election of Mrs Confort Amwe of the PDP.

Amwe is the only female lawmaker in the state assembly.

Alhaji Gambo Danga of APC had challenged the tribunal decision at the appeal court.

Crime / Rivers Begins Prosecution Of Suspected Serial Killer On Thursday by nwokoromercyme(f): 11:42pm On Nov 18, 2019
A suspected serial killer, Thankgod Nimi, will appear in Court on Thursday in Rivers State, alongside the self-confessed serial killer, Gracious David West.

The Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice in Rivers, Dr Zaccheus Adango said the state government has officially taken over the prosecution of West from the police.

The Attorney General also introduced amended charges against West and announced the planned arraignment of Nimi alongside David West in fresh charges supplied by the Police.

Based on the introduction of Nimi, the trail Judge, Justice Adolphus Enebeli adjourned the case to Thursday for the suspect to take his plea.

During West’s appearance on October 22, the state government announced the taking over the prosecution of the case from the police.

West was alleged to have unlawfully killed several women in different hotels and guest houses in parts of Rivers State, thereby committing an offence punishable under Section 319 sub 1, Cap 37. Volume 2 laws of Rivers State, 1999.

West, however, pleaded for forgiveness after pleading guilty to nine counts out of 10 charges preferred against him by the police.

He pleaded not guilty to the last charge bordering on killing of one of the young ladies in a hotel around Bendel Street in Port Harcourt, stating that he only tied the lady’s hands and legs and left her on the bed.

After West had taken his plea, the state government, through Adangor, applied to take over the prosecution of the matter, which was not opposed by the parties.

The trail judge, Justice Adolphus Enebeli, granted the application of the state government to take over the matter, expressing readiness to give accelerated hearing of the case.

He adjourned till November 18, 21, 27, 29 and December 4, for hearing and remanded the suspect in prison.

West had told the court that he preferred to tell the truth so that he could be pardoned, saying that he committed the crimes unconsciously.

He alleged that the police were in possession of his N60,000, necklace and wristwatch, urging the court to compel the operatives to release them to him.
