YouTube is taking another step to curb hateful and violent speech on its site. The video-streaming company owned by Google said it will now take down videos that lob insults at people based on race, gender expression, sexual orientation or other "protected attributes." YouTube will also prohibit veiled threats of violence, taking a step further into moderating what people can say in the millions of videos they create and upload daily. The company has been criticized by politicians, viewers and video creators for the material it allows on — and bans from — the site. It's been accused of allowing hate speech and extremism and creating spaces for harassment to linger online. YouTube also announced it would take action against channels that have been found to repeatedly harass people in videos. In many cases, it will "demonetize" the channel, YouTube said, by turning off any ad revenue those videos would normally generate for their creators. Local reports show that the lady had told the tenant, who is a pastor, to vacate her building after his rent expired in October. However, the man’s refusal to move out on time prompted the landlady to storm the building with bags of trash and litter everywhere. Some robbers had been reported to have attacked a bus conveying the Ifeanyi Ubah Football Club’s players and coaching crew, during which the driver was shot. The National Youth Service Corps has asked the police and operatives of the Department of State Services to arrest and prosecute some robbers who wore corpers’ uniform when they attacked commuters in Okene, Kogi State, last Friday. The NYSC demanded that the robbers be apprehended and prosecuted. It added that it would also “enforce the weight of the law on film-makers and comedians” who used its uniform as costumes without permission. The scheme’s Director of Press and Public Relations, Mrs Adenike Adeyemi, who stated this on Tuesday, noted that the NYSC Director-General, Brig. Gen. Shuaibu Ibrahim, had ordered corps members to always go about with their identity cards. Some robbers had been reported to have attacked a bus conveying the Ifeanyi Ubah Football Club’s players and coaching crew, during which the driver was shot. The robbers attacked the club’s bus which was heading for Kano State for a Nigeria Professional Football League match against Jigawa Golden Stars and killed the driver. Some members of the team were also injured and taken to a hospital for treatment. The NYSC said on Tuesday that the robbers must be arrested and made to face the full wrath of the law. It said, “While the management sincerely commiserates with the football team over the attack which resulted in severe bodily harm to the bus driver who was shot and some team members who also sustained injuries, it wishes to dissociate the NYSC from the dastardly attack as corps members neither bear arms nor carry out stop-and-search. “We reiterate that under the NYSC Act CAP N84 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004, it is a criminal offence for any person who is not a member of the corps to put on the NYSC uniform or any part of it. “We therefore call on law enforcement agencies, especially the police and the DSS to immediately apprehend and prosecute any unqualified person caught in the NYSC uniform since such person poses a big threat to national security. “In the same vein, the corps will spare no effort in shielding the uniform from unwarranted abuses by some film-makers and comedians who employ the NYSC uniform as costumes, without first seeking express permission from the scheme to do so. Henceforth, the full weight of the law will be brought to bear on such culprits.” Source: https://www.ogbeta.ng/2019/12/arrest-robbers-wearing-corpers-uniform.html

Popular Nigerian comedian, Basketmouth who has been dropped as an ambassador to sex and gender-based violence over a joke he made about rape. The comedian has finally breaks silence amid reports of his joke he made about rape. See his post below; Almost every morning in the blogs, on the news, there's a picture of a man sitting on the floor pleading, the caption is usually in the line of 'its the devils handwork' and the topic is from underage defilement, rape or brutality against a woman or minor. I live in this same world with my most prized possessions my wife, my two daughters, my sisters and women who have built me into the man I am. I was recently presented an opportunity to create awareness on the efforts of the EU to bring support to fighting this scourge, it was a no-brainer for me. I refused any compensation for it and volunteered to lend my voice because....its our fight, it's not for the EU...its for my girls' future. Unfortunately, a few years ago I shared up a Facebook post that I thought was shedding light through humor to the entitled crude and very present behavioral patterns of some African men who equate spending to sexual favors, but I also realized then that women actually have to face this daily and its harrowing and I deeply apologized for it I sincerely pray that this does not take away from the most important fight of our lives....the fight to secure our future...because the girl child is our future. I strongly appreciate the EU for this amazing platform to improve our lot, as long as the message reaches the ears of those who need it, then it's a win. To every woman - our mothers, sisters, lovers, wives, crowns, supporters, prayer partners, foundation, life.... thank you for being who you are. So many times you sacrifice who you are for a man to become who he wants to be. It's time we all love and and also support you like you do us....cos in your light, we all shine Bless. https://www.instagram.com/p/B5lRuutlDTh/ Source: https://www.ogbeta.ng/2019/12/eus-disengagement-over-rape-joke.html

Doctors in Lagos State, under the aegis of Medical Guild, have rejected the new minimum wage paid to workers by the state government, saying it is below the expectations of civil servants. Dr Babajide Saheed, Chairman of the Guild, made the doctors’ decision known on Monday at a media briefing on the Scientific Conference scheduled to hold on Dec. 3 and 4 in Lagos. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Medical Guild is the association of doctors under the employment of the Lagos State Government. Saheed said that not only was the new minimum wage unacceptable, the Guild was not part of the negotiations which was communicated to government, adding that it was still awaiting response. “You cannot be talking about our salary when we are not there; and when workers started receiving their salaries over the weekend, they were disappointed and unhappy. “Not only the doctors, generally, all the civil servants, because the increment was unimaginable and short of expectations. “The problem we have identified is high taxation. “No matter the amount of increment in the minimum wage, which makes the gross high, but the take home after tax reductions is peanuts. “Government should look at that issue and let workers have the benefits of the new minimum wage, and we hope that the state government will listen,” he said. Saheed called for the exemption of tax on call duty paid to doctors, saying it would lighten the tax burden on members of the Guild, as was the practice during the administration of former Gov. Bola Tinubu. He also called for a review in the retirement age of medical doctors to 65 years, adding that the same had been done for teachers. He said that improvement in welfare of workers would stem the current brain drain affecting the sector. Saheed said that incentives like car and housing loans would help to boost morale in the health sector. Also, Dr Saliu Oseni, Lagos State Chairman of the Nigeria Medical Association (NMA), urged the public to treat health workers with respect. Oseni said that government should be held responsible and accountable for problems of service delivery in the health sector and not the workers. He also appealed to the Nigerian Police to desist from harassing and arresting medical doctors over deaths of patients, saying the issue might discourage doctors from treating patients if not stopped. https://thenationonlineng.net/doctors-reject-new-minimum-wage/amp/
