Family / Re: Being Married To A Nigerian Is Hard Sometimes by Obamedo: 12:04pm On Jan 23, 2012
I can see polarisation into 2 camps if not more

1. Shut up you foreigner and deal with it
2. MIL please learn some manners

I won't even mention the camp of "I don't believe"

OP,
Please take heart, an alien culture can be difficult to decode, your husband can have issues if you go to Turkey as well so all i can add is keep the lines of communication open and that includes your MIL as yo may not know what transpired before he left Nigeria.
It also sounds like you have been isolated for a while, welcome to the UK. There are plenty of Nigerians here and thankfully a lot of us are enlightened as well. It is easy to work out where some of the posters here reside by the nature of the posts, some however exposed will remain ignorant.

We don't expect you to cook all the Nigerian dishes like a pro nor do we expect you to speak any language fluently. Its the effort and enthusiasm that counts. Nigerians love to make visitors, strangers or foreigners at home. Its our cultures, sadly not everyone has manners as you can see from the general tone of some posters on NL. DO what we do, concentrate on the good advice and ignore the vitriol. You cant please everyone but you can be respectful and not descend to their lowliness.

Speak to your husband, call your MIL and ask if she arrived safely
Family / Re: Being Married To A Nigerian Is Hard Sometimes by Obamedo: 10:36am On Jan 23, 2012
mutter:

This coming from a turkish woman surprises me.
My dear let the truth this tradition of supporting the family and even building houses at home is very common in Turkey. Furthermore parents and in laws are treated with reverence and great respect. I do not see any turkish grandmothers playing with their children. They have a similar relationship with them as nigerian grandparents. The grandchildren even kiss their hands bow and place the grandparents hand on their forehead.
Allow the poor woman to enjoy the fruit of her labour above all respect!!!!
You paid for her eye test!! Big deal you would have done the same and more for your mother,
The issue at departure. I would have expected you to hug her and kiss her goodbye and then give her time to say her final goodbye to her son alone. Do you know what must have been going through both their heads? They might have been wondering if they would see themselves again or how long it will take. At such an emotional time they need that privacy.
How could you be expecting your MIL to turn into your cook? If you had the right intention you could have pleaded with her
to teach you how to cook nigerian food. Besides how can you be married with two kids and not know how to cook even the basic nigerian food. I pity your husbands stomach.
finally when you married your husband did you not know that he would have to cater for his family? Now you want their existence to be threatened. What is the big deal about your husband working full time and you only part time with two kids? Is it not normal?

Mutter you are harsh!

If a man marries a woman, he marries her culture. The onus is on the man to protect and nurture his wife.
She has 2 kids for him and in some cultures that's a big deal.
She is in despair and it sounds like she tried her best to please this MIL

If he wanted to eat Nigerian, he should have taught her or asked his mum to teach his wife when she arrives
In this day an age no adult deserves to be mistreated by their relatives. The world is a changing place
Even if they had a disagreement and she couldn't stand her DIL, simple courtesy warrants a goodbye, at least to the children

Nigerian families can be trying at times as they believe that anyone abroad lives a good life and so they should shut up and send the money, still we don't know the rest of the story there.

There are different facets to the argument and yes it is a one sided story but there is I need to deliver such a damning judgement based on half the facts

Be nice and don't be harsh

Road traffic accidents? Well still linked to corruption
Are the roads in a safe and satisfactory condition? No!
Why not?
CORRUPTION!

The corruption formula applies to everything in Nigeria, whether it's road traffic accidents, infant or maternal mortality or falling standards in education.

Corruption!

The Nigerian political elite are responsible for mass murder!

When you divert for personal gain, money that was meant for providing for millions be it for health, security or education, you are denying a whole generation of their rights.
Poverty leads to impoverishment of a nation for years to come.

If I divert the money meant to supply drugs from my local hospital and refuse to invest my allocated budget on health, them I am responsible for every child under 5 who dies from malaria, every adult who dies from the lack of basic resuscitation equipment after an accident and every child who is disabled for life from a simple preventable disease such as polio

Remove corruption and see the average life span of a Nigerian rise year on year

Dear Shollydrive,

What is the size of the plot?
Are there any tarred access roads?
Is it in an estate? existing or planned?
Is it waterlogged or prone to flooding and requiring filling?
What waterfront is the plot adjacent to?
What documentation is available with the plot?

Dear OP,

A few questions if I may ask?
1. Is this price inclusive of all fees and charges?
2. Is there road access to all plots on the site?
3. How far is this site from the main road?
4. Are there any current facilities such as access to the National grid and adjacent tarred roads?
5. What is the minimum purchase requirement?
6. Is the land dry? ie not water logged
7. Are any payment plans available?
8. What documents are available as proof of ownership? purchase? Are there any markers or beacons demarcating individual lots or does a wall need to be erected?
9. Are there any requirements to develop within a certain timeframe?
10. Are there any restrictions on what you can do with your plot?

Properties / Re: Whom Do I Pay My Rent To Between Landlord And Landlady by Obamedo: 7:26am On Dec 29, 2011
OP,
Please dont pay anyone any money. This is a lose lose situation.

Inform both of them that till they settle their differences and come to an agreement regarding the ownership of the property you will not release any funds to either of them.
Put this down in writing and employ the services of a lawyer to protect your interests.
If they agree that one or the other can collect the rent, i will strongly recommend that both of them are there and they both sign with witnesses.
Don't take any bullshit from either of them, if they were married they can at least tolerate each oter for 5 minutes it will take to sign any such documents

Till this issue is settled, I will also suggest that you put the money in an account and ring fence it or pay it to your lawyer who should be a trusted party pending the outcome of their dispute.
On the other hand, please start looking for somewhere else to stay

Best of luck

So where is Igbinedion?

I can't believe he only stole $42 million, his Father would be ashamed of him.
These must just be 'specimen charges' of a larger sum which probabaly runs into billions

Imagine if he plea bargains and agrees to return the mentioned figure, he will be laughing all the way to the Bank.

His Solicitor should be remanded and charged with aiding and abetting a criminal. The fugitive is hiding somewhere and enjoying his loot
Health / Re: Is Aids Really Incurable? by Obamedo: 10:00am On Jan 12, 2008
tollyfat:

I have the feeling that AIDS can be cured. The general belief that it can't be cured is just an attempt by pharmaceutical companies in the western world to continue to milk AIDS patients and our health system of hard earned cash. Some western countries health ministries in collaboration with pharmaceutical companies have struck a deal on how to ensure a continues flow of income by shifting their attention from curative medicine to medicine that can only suppress symptoms. Some ailment that have been successfully.to them giving medication that suppress symptoms rather that cure is a sure gold mine. The same ideology applies to cancer etc

This is my opinion, what is yours.Do you think there will soon be a widely aacceptablecure to AIDS?

Comments like yours are at par with those of the South African President Thabo Mbeki
He said that HIV/AIDS did NOT exist and HIV/AIDS was a western invention designed to disadvantage the black man

His comments have been responsible for the demise of thousand of young south africans who looked up to him as a role model and resumed their risky sexual behaviour believing they will never get HIV

Thankfully he has retracted his statement and now concedes that HIV exists, but at what cost to South Africa?

HIV does exist, it is not curable at present but can be controlled with anti retovirals which slow down the progression of the disease in the body

There is a wealth of information out there, avail yourself to it and don't die from ignorance

Ignorance is a major cause of death in Africa, look at the WHO, Polio saga in the North

Have a good healthy life

@Freewilly

N18 million is small change to some Nigerians hence they don't feel the need to take any extreme precautions when carrying money around

When will Nigeria become a cashless society, is it really neccessary to carry N18 million in cash around?

@etin

Exactly what I have been saying, I do not use western union or moneygram, Its much better to have account to account transfers anytime and its even cheaper
You just need to shop around and be careful not to assume your bank uses the CBN rate

What rate did Diamond bank use for £ today?
The CBN rate as of today is N241.79 to the £

I dare not ask what the UBA rate is
Investment / Re: Nigerian Banks, Stockbrokers, And Services For Nigerians Abroad by Obamedo: 10:07am On Nov 28, 2007
@etin

May i warn you that you have to check the rate the bank is using, i have been stung once by UBA. Their "official" rates are not the CBN rates but interbank rates.

I once transferred money after checking the CBN rate on the CBN website it was N251 at the time however a rate of N247 was applied to the transfer when i queried this, i was informed they do not necessarily have to buy from CBN rather they used the interbank market and this rate happened to be lower at the time

So check the actual rate before you transfer any funds in order to avoid any surprises

There is an informal network of individuals and certain traders who provide exchange services to trusted ones.
It's 100% reliable and introduction is mainly by recommendation.

I am forever being asked if i have more sterling to transfer to Nigeria, the demand seems to be inexhaustible!

Anyway for safety's sake and peace of mind, please do not deal with anyone you are not 100% sure of.

If in doubt donate to western union at least there will be some change left

You use moneygram (and western union)?? Aah Sorry ooh

You might as well just donate your money to charity instead of Moneygram, i have never used them and never will
Investment / Re: Nigerian Banks, Stockbrokers, And Services For Nigerians Abroad by Obamedo: 7:01pm On Nov 16, 2007
I agree with you, I opened my UBA NRN account from the UK without ever stepping foot in Nigeria so that bit of Information is wrong

You only have to send scanned copies of the original documents requested and the ATM card, chequebook etc is sent to you by courier
Communication is mostly by email and they are relatively quick to respond to emails compared to other banks

ANother point to note; UBA remit is very uncompetitive compared to other methods of remitting money, i will never use it unless i am desperate
I was quoted a rate of £1 to N247 when the CBN rate was N252 and various others were offering a range from N255- 258, but then i suppose it is easier to send money to Nigeria from the UK through various channels than from the US and those who live in remote places have to use the 'official' channels

To be more constructive, as a student you are only allowed to work 16 hours a week
Depending on where you are there are a variety of student jobs in retails shops, chemists, cinemas and if you are lucky offices such as accounting firms (your field as i understand) who are looking for part timers with flexible hours such as students
But be prepared to work hard and work most weekends

Looking for a job is not easy regardless of who you are and what skills you've got so make sure you sell yourself well and work on your presentation skills

Nimshi:

ushang:

if you'll do, could you address the issues raised about your company on his thread? There're people who have had less-than-sterling experiences with your company. This is beyond meeting the capitalisation requirements; it's about service, and living up to claims made on your website.

The word is that there're more than a few people unhappy with Cashcraft; better to address that than another ad pitch.

.

@Nimshi, Exactly!

You can all see here a clear example of completely missing the point
Meeting capitalisation requirements doesn't have anything to do with offering a quality service, it only means you are less likely to run away with peoples money

Who cares if you have N500 million or N1 billion sitting in CBNs account?
Who cares if foreign investors have poured millions of dollars into the NSE?
Who cares if the stock market has appreciated 800-1000% in the last 2 weeks if you can't tell your broker to buy shares and get a timely response?

Having a fancy website doesn't impress if you can't deliver

Stockbrokers in Nigeria need to get their act together before the so called foreign investors move in and set up their own operations.
If any reputable stockbroking firm was to open shop in Nigeria i will be the first to jump ship!
Investment / Re: Stock Brokers In Nigeria? by Obamedo: 9:43am On Jun 08, 2007
Hmmm
Cashcraft claim to offer an online dealing platform but it is NOT functional
The information regarding your holdings etc when you log on, is not current and the only info you can glean from your online account is how many shares you hold and the price you purchased at the time.

If you want to work out the value of your current holdings you have to copy into an excel spreadsheet and do this yourself by updating the shares prices,  It is hardwork but once you have setup the spreadsheet its easy

Zenith securities owned by Zenith Bank also offer an online share dealing platform, this i believe is actually functional but i have been trying to buy stock that is scarce at the moment so they have not fulfilled my order as of today
If i successfully trade online with Zenith securities i will inform the house

I do not know of any other brokers that offer online dealing that works, that is until i set up my own fully functioning company with all the software ( maybe eh?  tongue )

However i suspect that it is due to lack of vision and software infrastructure in the various dealing houses as the technology does exist.
I also believe the brokers want to be able to fully control the markets by restricting access and shrouding share dealing in esoterica (for obvious reasons) rather than empower the client and allow market forces dominate

Comments both negative (but constructive) and positive are welcome

Investment / Re: Best Performing Stock Markets Worldwide by Obamedo: 12:45am On Jun 07, 2007
With all due respect but i tire for this type of question

It seems to be a Nigerian phenomenon, if anyone knew the best performing stocks anywhere in the world they would be busy buying up all the available stock not spreading the information

No one is ever going to say buy this buy that, everyone does their own research (or maybe not) and they take their own risks

The best way to go about it is to do some personal homework, read forums like this and books and study the market decide how much you have to invest and what risk level you can support

If you want to know about a company you can ask someone who has looked at or has access to their fundamentals and has done a technical analysis and see what they say

But No one and i repeat no one has a crystal ball

If i want to scam you i can encourage you and a lot others to buy a certain stock to drive up the price and later sell for a tidy profit leaving you holding a worthless piece of paper so be careful
Politics / Re: Imagine Fuel At N75 Per Litre by Obamedo: 12:02pm On May 28, 2007
@adconline

I simplified my original post to make it readable and to the point for those who do not have the time to read a 1000 page dissertation on Fuel prices in Nigeria
I can see you have failed to see what i was doing and have taken everything i have said quite literally

Is there a like company like NNPC in garri business? Oil business in Nigeria is controlled by the govt?

If Dangote Sugar refineries was owned by the Government and they increased sugar prices will we not complain?

Indirectly or directly the government controls the price of everything in Nigeria, from fuel or fertiliser subsidies, import duty on heavy machinery and agricultural equipment, to loans and collateral for farmers etc

The Government of Nigeria should fully privatise the oil industry, sit back and collect taxes and royalties, whether you earn $1 a month or not has nothing to do with the cost of extracting, refining and distributing a product. It doesn't cost $1 dollar to extract a barrel of oil.

I would rather they used the money from the so called fuel susbidy scheme for transparent development policies that everyone can see

The equipment used to produce oil in Nigeria and supply to the consumer is bought with dollars not Naira and we do not manufacture any equipment locally.  Refined fuel doesn't just leak out of the ground so you may have 40 billion barrels of crude in your backwater creek but you still need dollars to buy equipment to extract it (to put things simply)

As long as you need imported labour and machinery to extract oil you are dependent on  international market forces, a tractor or an oil rig will not be sold to a Nigerian for less because he earns $1 a day. The manufacturer is in the tractor business to make a profit and he is not a charity and likewise for the oil company shareholders

Flawed economics theory, do you know the cost of fuel in Iraq, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Libya,UAE?  In the US,  its about $3.20 per gallon ( 1 gallon = 3.785 litres)  which is about $ 1.18 per litre. Mind you that minimum wage in America is $5.15 per hour while that of Nigeria is less than N10, 000   about $70 per month. So a Nigerian pays half of what an American pays for petrol even though an American earns about $800/per month which is above 100 percent more than what a ‘worker’ in Nigeria earns.

The cost of fuel in those countries dependent on the cost of extracting from the terrain, deep sea, inland waterways and creeks, and arid desert all have different costs of extraction. You can not simply compare the price of fuel in Saudi to the price of fuel in Nigeria. They  also have local working refineries and do not resort to importing the same product they should be exporting themselves using their hard earned dollars. They also have lower taxes on fuel.
60% of the cost of fuel in the UK goes to taxes

Yes, the cost of fuel in Nigeria should be cheaper because we dont pay a tanker driver $800/month and we dont pay our fuel station attendants in dollars either.

I could go on and on here but  the fact that an American earns more than a Nigeria has nothing to do with setting the price of fuel, we do not have a world body of petroleum resources that dictates what prices should be in each country Fuel prices are set by Government policies, direct and indirect and market forces.

Nigerian governments wrecked  the economy and should be held accountable. If they had invested in the economy (and more so the oil industry) and spent money where it should be spent rather than stuff their own pockets Nigeria would not be in such dire straits right now

What we need in Nigeria is either a privatised industry that is regulated by the Government  or a  transparent system operated by the government that ensures everyone pays a fair price for fuel that is readily available

I am afraid we cant sell fuel at N1 a litre because we earn $1 a day.

I am not an economist so i am not quoting any newly fangled economic theory here just simple common sense
