Politics / Japa: It’ll Hurt Our Economy, MP Condemns Uk’s Ban by OddsDoc(f): 6:52pm On May 25, 2023 |
A member of the United Kingdom parliament, Carol Monaghan, has condemned the UK’s new immigration policy, which banned international students from bring family members with them from 2024. Recall that UK Home Office, on Tuesday, also announced that foreign students would be stopped from switching from the student visa route to a work visa until their studies have been completed. But, reacting to the immigration policy at parliament on Wednesday, Monaghan said the students and their families made valuable contributions to the UK, contributing £40 billion to the economy in 2022. According to the UK lawmaker, the international students enrich the UK society as they have skills, which have proved useful across key sectors. Monaghan said, “With labour shortages in healthcare, STEM, IT, to name a few, how can the minister fail to recognise that this policy will aggravate these? I’d like to ask the minister, what assessments have been carried out on the economic impact of this change on the university sector? “The reality is that many students who come into the UK look beyond their studies and want their families to be part of their experience. “Without a way for overseas students to bring their families, many will opt to go elsewhere and any drop in international students numbers will cause further harm to universities that are already facing financial difficulties.” Meanwhile, the UK universities, have also kicked against the country’s new immigration rules. The Universities UK International (UUK), a body of universities, had said the move was a threat to the country’s global success as a top destination for international talent. The Director, UUK, Jamie Arrowsmith said, “International students make an invaluable contribution to our universities and to the UK’s economy. Building on the government’s explicit commitments and ambitions, which were clearly set out in the international education strategy, we have seen significant growth since 2019.”

Politics / APC Chairman Admits February 25 Polls Not Perfect by OddsDoc(f): 8:53pm On Mar 13, 2023 |
The National Chairman of All Progressives Congress, Senator Abdullahi Adamu, on Monday evening, admitted that the conduct of the February 25 Presidential and National Assembly poll was not perfect. Adamu said that they didn’t set out to conduct a perfect election. Adamu made the statement while giving his speech at the parley of APC National Working Committee with the president-elect, Bola Tinubu; vice president-elect, Senator Kashim Shettima and members-elect of the National Assembly. The closed-door meeting, which did not commence until about 2.48 pm was held at the State House Banquet Hall, Abuja. Among the dignitaries spotted at the event were Shettima; Senate President Ahmed Lawan; Speaker of House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila; Minister of Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola; Senator Godswill Akpabio, among others. The development is coming a few days after disgruntled members of the NWC called for the reformation of the party and his resignation to balance the contentious Muslim-Muslim ticket of the incoming administration, which has generated tension prior to the 2023 elections. Speaking at the event, Adamu congratulated all the elected political officeholders, saying they deserve the joy of victory after winning the February 25 elections. The APC chairman, however, conceded that the polls that produced them were flawed. He said, “I very heartily congratulate all the distinguished men and women elect. I salute you all. You are the new team Nigeria. From May 29 this year, the burden of our national unity, peace, and development will rest on your shoulders as a team. “It is fair and honourable to admit that the February 25 elections were not perfect. We did not set out to conduct perfect elections. “World history has no instances of perfect elections. Like all other democratic nations, we set out to conduct free, fair, and credible elections. This we did. “I am proud to say we achieved this feat and delivered on the promise made by President Muhammadu Buhari to the people. For the first time in living memory in respect of our elections, there were no allegations of vote-buying and outcry over all the other ills associated with the conduct of our elections. Rigging may not be dead, but it has been decapitated. Our democracy is maturing, and we are maturing with it. “From the results of February 25, 2023 general elections announced so far by the electoral umpire, INEC, the APC won the presidency, clean and clear, and a majority in both chambers of the national assembly. “We chose not to rout the other political parties because they are our partners in our national progress and development.”

Politics / Presidential Polls: Peter Obi, A Hero For Foiling Atiku’s Victory, Says Wike by OddsDoc(f): 11:34pm On Mar 11, 2023 |
GOVERNOR Nyesom Wike has described Labour Party (LP) candidate, Peter Obi, as the hero of the 2023 presidential election for scuttling the chances of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Atiku Abubakar, thereby preventing North from holding on to power. Wike, addressing a cluster of Rivers state traders associations Saturday in Port Harcourt, said, “Obi is my hero. If Obi did not contest, power would have gone back to the North. The whole of South-South and South-East that PDP lost if Obi did not contest PDP would have won.” “Obi is the hero. He may not have been pronounced the winner, but no problem, the law will take its course. If Obi did not run this election, power would have remained in the North. Whether he is declared winner now or not, history will be on his side, that he fought and fought well.” The governor knocked his predecessor and immediate past Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, for wooing Igbos in Rivers to vote for All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Tonye Cole, as governor whereas he allegedly mobilised votes for Atiku in the presidential polls. “If Amaechi loves the Igbos, why did he not support Obi? Instead, he supported Atiku. He did not want the power to return to the South because he lost his APC ticket”, Wike alleged against Amaechi. The governor further said Amaechi is deliberately canvassing support for Cole as the next Rivers governor to evade ongoing prosecution for alleged embezzlement of $50M from the Rivers government coffers. Chairmen of the Computer Dealers Association, Anunobi Ikechi and the Building Materials Traders Association, Okwudiri Onuorah, assured the governor of their support for Rivers PDP to go.

Politics / Ogun LP Denies Endorsing Gov Abiodun For Second Term by OddsDoc(f): 9:27pm On Mar 10, 2023 |
The Labour Party, LP, in Ogun State, on Friday, reacted to news making the rounds that the Executives of the party in the state have endorsed Governor Dapo Abiodun for a second term in office. The party described the endorsement as dubious, atrocious and grievous. Some LP leaders had endorsed the governor for a second term and said they would go into an alliance with the All Progressives Congress, APC, in the state. But the LP, in a statement by its Publicity Secretary, Mr Tokunbo Peters described the purported endorsement as not only misleading, but also a poor attempt at hoodwinking unsuspecting members of the public and the electorate into believing that the Labour Party is in alliance with the All Progressive Congress in Ogun state. Peters said: “For the records, the Ogun state branch of the Labour Party categorically disassociates itself from the purported endorsement of Prince Dapo Abiodun for a second term and also unequivocally states that, even though overtures have been made to the Labour Party by the ruling party, the Labour Party is totally averse to any form of alliance with the APC. This is considering the fact that the APC government in the state lacks purposeful leadership. Moreso that the Labour Party is already in court with the APC in respect of the manipulated results of the last presidential election. “It is public knowledge that Engr Lookman Jagun is the defacto Chairman of the Caretaker Committee of Labour Party in Ogun state and that Michael Ashade who allegedly endorsed the governor has been suspended from the party long ago. While Michael Ashade and his cohorts are free to endorse and support any candidate of their choice in their individual capacity, but they should refrain from using the name of the Labour Party when making such endorsements. “Impersonation and deliberate misrepresentation are criminal offences. A constituted authority like a State Government should not be seen to be condoning and accommodating impostors for expected political gains. “The Labour Party has suffered incalculable injustice by the non-listing of her candidates in the State elections and is doggedly pursuing redress to the systemic disenfranchisement through the court process. “Meanwhile, Labour Party continues to promote the ideals of good governance, social welfare and service delivery and at the appropriate time, will make an open endorsement of its preferred candidate for the gubernatorial election, consequent on the eventual non-listing by INEC of its gubernatorial candidate. However, whoever the Labour Party chooses to endorse will be in the interest of the good people of Ogun state who have long been suffering under the present APC government.”

Politics / Ogun East PDP, ADC Stalwarts Decamp To APC by OddsDoc(f): 10:30pm On Mar 09, 2023 |
The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP Local Government chairmen, secretaries and executive council members in Ijebu East, Ijebu North and Ogun Waterside local governments on Thursday dumped Ladi Adebutu and declared support for Governor Dapo Abiodun. The decampees were led to the Itoro Hall in Ijebu-Ode by Kehinde Bello, a former House of Representatives aspirant on the platform of the PDP from Ijebu North / Ogun Waterside and Ijebu East Federal Constituency. Also, at the event were members of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Ijebu North, Ijebu- North East, and Ogun Waterside local government areas. Speaking while leading members of the PDP to the APC, strong ally of PDP gubernatorial candidate, Kehinde Ayodele Bello said they decided to join the progressives and work for the success of the APC in the coming elections out of conviction that Abiodun is a better candidate than Adebutu. Bello who narrated how he was schemed out from contesting for the House of Representatives by the PDP through the substitution of name in Abuja, said he and his supporters agreed to dump the umbrella party as it has no future for its members. “I was robbed after the primaries, which I won. My name was substituted in Abuja. So I have decided to leave the party. I have declared today that I have left the party. The governor knows what the people want, and he is meeting their needs. APC is the party of the people, and we will work for its success at the polls,” he noted. Explaining that despite their efforts at building the party, they were not given due recognition, he said there is need for them to seek a platform that align with their individual and collective aspirations. Also speaking, the PDP Chairman, Ijebu North East Local Government Area, Ayo Ogunfowora, said they have come to announce the death of PDP in the State and its burial on March 18. “By the time we start working for the APC, there will be nothing left of the opposition party. “We are doing Operation Show No Mercy and Kill PDP in Ijebu North East. We join you because you are a performer and we will never disappoint you”, Ogunfowora said. In her remarks, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) Women Leader in Ijebu-Ode, Alhaja Kemi Agboola, said they were deceived by leaders of her former party, stressing that they have seen the light hence their decision to join the party in power. Receiving the decampees on behalf of the APC National and state Chairmen, the State governor Dapo Abiodun, commended the former opposition members for making the right choice by joining the winning party, describing the PDP and others as parties without followers. According to Governor Abiodun, since the APC controls the federal level, it is imperative to also control the state for synergy for the food of the state. He said the party has been receiving big wigs from the opposition parties, commending them for leaving the ship before it finally sink. The APC, the governor noted, is very big to accommodate as many people as possible, urging them not feel like strangers, but integrate themselves and work for the success of the party at the forth coming governorship and House of Assembly elections.

Politics / Tinubu’s Victory Stands, Presidency Replies PDP, LP, Others by OddsDoc(f): 10:02pm On Mar 09, 2023 |
The Presidency has said despite alleged irregularities and harsh criticism of the Independent National Electoral Commission, the results of the February 25 Presidential and National Assembly elections still stand until otherwise proven in court. It also ruled out any possibility of annulling the presidential elections as was done on June 12, 1993; advising aggrieved candidates of the opposition parties to pursue redress in court instead. The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, revealed this in a piece chronicling key takeaways from the President’s recently-concluded trip to Doha, Qatar, where he attended the 5th United Nations summit on Least Developed Countries. It was reported that long before INEC declared the All Progressives Congress Presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu, as the winner of the election, the opposing Peoples Democratic Party and the Labour Party called for the cancellation of the exercise altogether, citing irregularities. In a press conference held in Abuja on Monday, February 27, the Vice Presidential candidates of PDP and LP, Ifeanyi Okowa and Yusuf Datti, respectively, demanded fresh elections nationwide saying INEC failed to transmit results electronically from the BIVAS to the iREV portal immediately after collation at the Polling Units. However, the electoral umpire proceeded with the collation exercise which culminated with Tinubu securing over eight million votes to emerge as President-elect. The governing APC and the opposing PDP and LP have since constituted their legal teams to battle in court. According to the Presidency, however, Buhari remained reticent about INEC’s criticism by “wishful thinkers” because he had long decided not to take any decisions that would undermine the electoral process. “President Buhari not only muted himself following the cacophony, he picked up international travel: “Bola Tinubu’s election stands. If you are aggrieved, and you have the locus to do so, go to court,”’ the statement read. The Presidency said in the buildup to Buhari’s trip to Qatar, he was faced with orchestrated attempts to poison public opinion against national institutions, particularly the presidential election and its conduct by the Independent National Electoral Commission, as an institution, against which vile and unsubstantiated allegations were hurled. According to Shehu, “The clear intent of this was creating an atmosphere of fear, polarising the public and demonizing the administration of the President. “The wishful thinkers appeared to assume that the June 12, 1993 election crisis, the worst ever since the Civil War could be recreated. “Those who sought to do this forgot what the President said at the palace of the Gbong-Gwon Jos, when he went to the city to inaugurate the Tinubu-Shettima campaign: ‘this election will not be annulled; whoever is the winner will be president.” The presidential spokesman echoed Buhari’s several iterations to world leaders in Qatar about handing over to a new President on May 29, 2023. On Tuesday, it was also reported that the President spoke with the Iranian VP, Mohsen Mansouri, calling for continued economic cooperation with the next administration, especially in the sectors of energy, infrastructure, and culture. Buhari also appealed to Nigerians in Qatar to support Tinubu’s government “so that Nigeria will continue to be the beacon of hope and prosperity in our continent and an example for other African countries to emulate.”

Politics / Why Buhari’s Quiet Over Allegations Of Irregularities Against INEC — Presidency by OddsDoc(f): 9:46pm On Mar 09, 2023 |
The Presidency, on Thursday, gave the reason why President Muhammadu Buhari kept is silent when there were allegations of irregularities and compromise against the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, on the conduct of the February 25 presidential and National Assembly elections. The Presidency also ruled out the possibility of taking any decision that would lead to the annulment of the presidential elections as was the case of June 12, 1992. It advised any candidate or political party that is not satisfied with the conduct and outcome of the election to approach the court for redress. These were contained in a report by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu, titled, “At the 5th United Nations Conference on Least Developed Countries (LDCs), President Buhari drums up support for Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Presidency”. Before the elections, President Buhari had at different fora, both local and international, assured that he would ensure that the elections that would herald his exit from office would be credible, free, fair and transparent and that the outcome would reflect the wish of the people in choosing who would lead them. The signing into the law the Electoral Act, 2022 and the use of technology for the elections were indications that President Buhari was ready to bequeath to the Nigeria, a transparent electoral process, devoid of manipulations. However, controversies have trailed the conduct and outcome of the February 25 presidential election as the INEC has been accused to have failed to follow strictly the Electoral Act as regards the transmission of the results from the BIVAS to the iREV immediately after collation at the Pulling Units. Former President Olusegun Obasanjo was the first to raise the alarm that the INEC had compromised the conduct of the election by not keeping to the electoral laws and had, in a statement, called on President Buhari to call the electoral umpire to order so that the country would not be thrown into political crisis. There has also been plethora of negative reports from a section of international news media, casting aspersions on the conduct of the election, saying that it fell flat from the expectations of majority of the electorate. But the presidential spokesman in what could be said to be the takeaways he listed from the President participation at the LDCs Conference, in Doha, Qatar, said that Buhari, while speaking to Nigerians in the Diaspora about the ongoing political transition, called for support for the incoming government of Asiwaju Tinubu, “so that Nigeria will continue to be the beacon of hope and prosperity in our continent and an example for other African countries to emulate.” He further said, “In addition to other things, this trip, more than any other, speaks to the courage, political stamina and statesmanship with which the President has managed the affairs of the nation. “In the buildup to the trip, he was faced with orchestrated attempts to poison public opinion against national institutions, particularly the presidential election and its conduct by the independent National Electoral Commission, INEC as an institution, against which vile and unsubstantiated allegations were hurled. “The clear intent of this was creating an atmosphere of fear, polarizing the public and demonizing the administration of the President. The wishful thinkers appeared to assume that the June 12, 1993 election crisis, the worst ever since the Civil War could be recreated. Those who sought to do this forgot what the President said at the palace of the Gbong-Gwon Jos, when he went to the city to inaugurate the Tinubu-Shettima campaign: “this election will not be annulled; whoever is the winner will be president.,’’ he said. He also said, “President Buhari not only muted himself following the cacophony, he picked up international travel: “Bola Tinubu’s election stands. If you are aggrieved, and you have the locus to do so, go to court.’’ Continuing, he said, “President Buhari used the opportunity of the visit to speak to his guests about the recent election in Nigeria and the fact that a new President would be taking over in less than three months. He hoped that the strong relations he had built between those countries will continue to endure in the new administration. “The highlight of the conference for Nigeria was the national address on the theme of this year’s event “From Potential to Prosperity”, a speech that observers described as strikingly activist. In it, the President criticized the current structure of the global financial system which, he said, “places an unsustainable external debt burden on the most vulnerable countries.”

Politics / Postponement Of Polls: INEC Has Eroded Our Confidence – Labour Party by OddsDoc(f): 9:23pm On Mar 09, 2023 |
The Labour Party has said the recent conduct of the Independent National Electoral Commission has done incalculable damage to the trust Nigerians once had in the commission’s promise to let the people’s vote count. National Chairman of the party, Comrade Julious Abure, said this in an interview in Abuja, on Thursday. He explained that he was one of those who at various forums expressed implicit confidence in the ability of the Prof. Mahmood Yakubu-led INEC to deliver based on his repeated assurances that the commission would adhere strictly to its rules and the tamper proof BVAS technology. According to Abure, INEC not only failed to deliver but had through its subsequent actions shown that it cannot be trusted. The LP Chairman expressed misgivings over INEC’s various applications to court, reliefs sort and the postponement of the Governorship and State Assembly elections earlier scheduled for Saturday, March 11, 2023. Abure said, “…Our major concern is that aspect (of the Appeal Court ruling) which granted INEC the opportunity not to allow us to inspect the BVAS. Our concern really stems from the fact that INEC these days is it to be trusted. “INEC will make a promise from one side of the mouth and then swallow their vomit from the other. “Recall that in 2019, INEC promised that it had a server only for those servers not to be available when litigants wanted to inspect the server that they claimed they had. “INEC had gone out of their way to assure and reassure Nigerians again and again that election results will be uploaded from polling units to their server and that people are going to view these results from their server but you could see that when it was time for people to start uploading the results, INEC said it had a technical glitch even when they had explained to Nigerians that they had backup that will roll off into work immediately when the main server had a technical issue. “All of these brings us to the point that even though INEC had assured us and the courts they in their counter affidavits to say that the records in the BVAS will be saved in their backend server we have our doubts because this is not the first time INEC will be telling us that they have a server, they will upload to their server and so on and so forth. “But the Court in their wisdom has given them privilege and you can see, immediately they got that judgement yesterday, they shifted the elections. “If they knew they were going to postpone the governorship election for a week why did they go to court to go and vary the order given to us to inspect materials? “There was absolutely no need for it because one of the reasons they gave to the court was that if they allowed us to inspect the BVAS it would affect the timeline for the election but surprisingly, after getting the court to grant them the request to reconfigure the BVAS they immediately shifted the election. “One had a lot of doubts about the patriotism, commitment, truthfulness and integrity of this INEC to do what it right. “The way and manner they conducted the last election has completely destroyed the confidence which I had in INEC. Let’s see what stories they will come up with tomorrow. “Tomorrow is here it’s not far. Since the court gave the order for INEC to allow is inspect materials, INEC has not allowed us. “We’ve not be able to inspect, our lawyers have been going there everyday, our technical experts have been going there on daily basis and we have not been allowed access. “At times you begin to wonder whether this INEC is working for Nigerians or some persons somewhere. “I’ll be sincere with you, if INEC says they are going to Lagos, I will go and look for them in Sokoto. We are ready for the elections it it INEC is a law unto itself.” 1 Like

Politics / Breaking: 7 States Withdraw Suit Seeking To Void Tinubu’s Victory by OddsDoc(f): 10:04pm On Mar 03, 2023 |
Seven States of the federation that approached the Supreme Court to nullify the election victory of the President-elect, Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress, APC, have withdrawn their suit. The states- Adamawa State, Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Delta, Edo, Taraba and Sokoto- through their team of lawyers led by Chief Mike Ozekhome, SAN, on Friday, filed a notice of discontinuance of the case. The plaintiffs had gone before the apex court to challenge the outcome of Presidential and National Assembly elections that held on February 25, insisting that the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, acted in breach of the Electoral Act, 2022. The plaintiffs maintained that election results from the 36 states of the federation and the FCT, were not properly transmitted and collated by INEC, as prescribed by the Electoral Act. The six states, which are currently under the control of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in the suit marked: SC/CV/354/2023, further alleged that INEC pulled down its portal harbouring the Regulations and Guidelines it earlier set for the elections. Consequently, they applied for an order of the apex court, mandating “a holistic review of all results so far announced by the Federal Government of Nigeria through the INEC which were carried out other than through the manner prescribed by the provisions of the Electoral Act, 2022, the INEC Regulations and Guidelines for the Conduct of Elections, 2022; and the INEC Manual for Election Officials”. “A declaration that the Federal Government of Nigeria, the INEC, was bound to electronically transmit or transfer Polling Unit Results in Form EC8A using BVAS by uploading Scanned Copy of the said Unit Result to the Independent National Electoral Commission Result Viewing Portal (IReV) in the course of the General Elections held on the 25th of February, 2023 throughout the Federation in compliance with the provision of Sections 25; 47(2); 60 (1), (2), (4) & (5); 62; 64(4)(a) & (b); 70; and 148 of the Electoral Act, 2022, governing the 2023 nationwide general elections, particularly paragraphs 38 of the INEC Regulations and Guidelines for the Conduct of Elections, 2022; and paragraphs 2.8.4; 2.9.0; and 2.9.1 of the INEC Manual for Election Officials, 2023, for the conduct of the Presidential Election. “A declaration that the failure of the Federal Government of Nigeria, the INEC, to electronically transmit or transfer Polling Unit Results in Form EC8A using BVAS by uploading Scanned Copy of the said Unit Result to the Independent National Electoral Commission Result Viewing Portal (IReV) after the counting and announcement of the Polling Units results on 25th of February, 2023 in collusion, violates the provision of Sections 25; 47(2); 60 (1), (2), (4) & (5); 62; 64(4)(a) & (b); 70; and 148 of the Electoral Act, 2022, governing the 2023 nationwide general elections, particularly paragraphs 38 of the INEC Regulations and Guidelines for the Conduct of Elections, 2022; and paragraphs 2.8.4; 2.9.0; and 2.9.1 of the INEC Manual for Election Officials, 2023, for the conduct of the Presidential Election. “A declaration that the fundamentally flawed electoral process through the non-uploading of the results of each of the 176,974 Polling Units nationwide, in respect of the Presidential Election and National Assembly Elections held on Saturday, 25th February 2023 were not in accordance with the provisions of Sections 25; 47(2); 60 (1), (2), (4) & (5); 62; 64(4)(a) & (b); 70; and 148 of the Electoral Act, 2022, governing the 2023 nationwide general elections, particularly paragraphs 38 of the INEC Regulations and Guidelines for the Conduct of Elections, 2022; and paragraphs 2.8.4; 2.9.0; and 2.9.1 of the INEC Manual for Election Officials, 2023, for the conduct of the Presidential Election. “A declaration that the entire results of the Presidential Election conducted on the 25th of February, 2023 announced by the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission at the National Collation Centre, Abuja, in flagrant provision of Sections 25; 47(2); 60 (1), (2), (4) & (5); 62; 64(4)(a) & (b); 70; and 148 of the Electoral Act, 2022, governing the 2023 nationwide general elections, particularly paragraphs 38 of the INEC Regulations and Guidelines for the Conduct of Elections, 2022; and paragraphs 2.8.4; 2.9.0; and 2.9.1 of the INEC Manual for Election Officials, 2023, for the conduct of the Presidential Election, were invalid, null and void, and of no effect whatsoever”. As well as an order, “directing a wholistic review of all results so far announced by the Federal Government of Nigeria through the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) which were carried out other than through the manner prescribed by the provisions of the Electoral Act, 2022, the INEC Regulations and Guidelines for the Conduct of Elections, 2022; and the INEC Manual for Election Officials”. They had prior to the notice of discontinuance, applied for accelerated hearing of the case. It will be recalled that INEC had declared Bola Tinubu of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, as winner of the presidential election. Tinubu defeated 17 other candidates who took part in the election. He scored a total of 8,794,726 votes to defeat Atiku Abubakar of the PDP who polled a total of 6,984,520 votes and Peter Obi of the Labour Party, who came third with a total of 6,101,533 votes. Both PDP and LP had since rejected the outcome of the presidential election, just as they expressed readiness to challenge it in court.

Politics / Governorship Poll: APC Advises Makinde To Brace Up For Imminent Defeat by OddsDoc(f): 9:36pm On Mar 01, 2023 |
Following the emergence of Asiwaju Bola Timubu, the Presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, as the president-elect, the party in Oyo State, has advised Governor ‘Seyi Makinde to prepare for his imminent defeat in the March 11, governorship election. The Director-General, Asiwaju Tinubu-Shettima Coalition for Good Governance, (ATSCGG), Barr. Adebayo Shittu, gave the advice, yesterday, during a press conference held at his office in Ibadan. Shittu, in the press conference, themed: “Whither Oyo State 2023,” noted that APC in the state after the glorious victory at the presidential and national assembly elections, had gone to refine its trajectory to guarantee equally over-whelming and undulatory victory and triumph over the main opponent and the current governor. He said: “It would be recalled that Oyo State, as one of the foremost Yoruba States, had always been ruled by progressive parties under different names and colours.” “However, the State fell into bad times under the last administration of the late Sen. Ishaq Ajimobi (of blessed memory). Unfortunately, he could not manage well the APC primaries for local governments, state assembly, the gubernatorial and national assembly.” “Consequently all party members who aspired for one position or the other and who were wrongly disenfranchised decided to leave the party. Apart from exiting the APC, most of them joined Engr. Seyi Makinde and the rival PDP to defeat the APC in the 2019 general elections.” “This saw the emergence of Seyi Makinde as Oyo State Governor. As God would have it, Seyi Makinde, therefore, got the Oyo State governorship seat without the needed psychological preparation or required political experience.” “This is someone who had neither been a councillor, a commissioner, a legislator or a political executive at any level. It was, therefore, very easy for him to prove that experience cannot be purchased from any earthly store.” “Or, how else do we explain that of all the APC elements who joined forces with him to became governor in 2019, not one of them remains with him till today.” Shittu pointed out that, the last Saturday presidential and national assembly elections had shown clearly that people in the state have unanimously resolved to completely submit and support APC. “The results of last Saturday’s presidential and National Assembly elections have shown clearly that our patriotic citizen of Oyo State have unanimously resolved to completely submit and support our great party, the A.P.C. with almost half a million votes for our presidential candidate, the victory of all three senatorial candidates of our party and ten out of fourteen House of Representative, victory, the A.P.C. is clearly the unrivalled leader among competing political parties in our State.” “We, are, therefore, assured that with the foregoing results, the state assembly and gubernatorial The contest on March 11 would be a walk-over for our great party, the APC,” Shittu boasted.

Politics / Don’t Allow PDP ‘stain Your White’, Fayose Advises Peter Obi by OddsDoc(f): 9:03pm On Mar 01, 2023 |
Former Ekiti State governor, Ayodele Fayose has advised the Presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the just concluded election, Peter Obi to run away from the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, to avoid suffering the same misfortune they currently suffer. Recall that both the PDP and the Labour Party held a joint press conference on Tuesday in what seemed like an alliance to call for the cancellation of the presidential election that held on Saturday over INEC’s failure to upload results to its server directly from polling units. Obi who was Atiku’s running mate in 2019, left the PDP to run under Labour Party, and Fayose has now advised that his remaining relevant depends on him dissociating and maintaining his distance from the PDP. “Did they (PDP) make effort to reconcile with Obi before today? Today now they are looking for Obi. Obi is the clean man, he should not allow them stain him. Obi is wearing white. Nigerians are talking Obi now. “Obi is a man I have great respect for. Let me say it here, Obi should not allow PDP stain him. If PDP were the ones winning the election, will they say they should cancel it?” Fayose queried On PDP accusing the APC of rigging, Fayose urged the PDP to seek redress in court and stop trying to drag Obi into their problems. Fayose in a tweet on Wednesday went ahead to call for the resignation of the National Chairman of the PDP, Iyorchia Ayu. He wrote, “As for the PDP National Chairman, Iyorchia Ayu, I call for his immediate resignation for his inability to move the party forward.” 1 Like

Politics / Halt Collation, Announce Results Uploaded On IREV, Group Tells INEC by OddsDoc(f): 9:51pm On Feb 28, 2023 |
The Peter Obi Support Network has asked the Independent National Electoral Commission to stop the collation of the presidential results and comply with the provisions of the Electoral Act which stipulates that results must be uploaded and transmitted to IRev. POSN in a statement signed by its Directorate of Information, Alhaji Ismaila Savu, on Tuesday, condemned the electoral body for violating its own laws on transmitting of results. The group stated that the commission has violated all the stipulated guidelines on the transmission of results despite assurances to the public. The statement reads, “Section 60 of the Electoral Act provides that the presiding officer shall, after counting the votes at the polling unit, enter the votes scored by each candidate in a form to be prescribed by the Commission as the case may be. “Section 60(5) of the Electoral Act provides that the Presiding Officer shall transfer the results including total number of accredited voters and the results of the ballot in a manner as prescribed by the Commission. “Independent National Electoral Commission thereafter pursuant to Section 148 of the Electoral Act, 2022, the Commission may, subject to the provision of this Act, issue regulations, guidelines, or manuals for the purpose of giving effect to the provisions of this Act and for its determination. “This regulation and guidelines cover elections and arrangement for their conduct, accreditation and voting procedure at elections, and collation of election results. “In article 38 of the Electoral guidelines – Article 38 provides that electronic transmission of results and upload of results to IReV the commission stated that, on completion of all the polling unit voting and results procedures, the presiding officer shall: “(i) electronically transmit or transfer the result of the polling unit, direct to the collation system as prescribed by the Commission. (ii) Use the BVAS to upload a scanned copy of the EC8A to the INEC Result Viewing Portal (IReV) as prescribed by the Commission (iii) Take the BVAS (Bimodal Voter Accreditation System) and the original copy of each of the forms in a tamper evident envelope to the registration Area/Ward Collation Office, in the company of Security Agents. The group further stated that the INEC Result Viewing Portal was created to provide real-time transmission of election results from polling units to the central collation centre and designed to enhance the transparency of the electoral process at the same time reduce the incidence of vote rigging and election manipulation. They also noted that the IReV platform allows voters and other interested parties to monitor the electoral process and view the results of ongoing elections in real-time. They also stated that the portal provides pictures of the election results from each polling unit, including the number of votes cast for each candidate and the percentage of total votes cast. However, after the presidential election, “During the collation of the results, INEC polling agents refused, failed and neglected to upload scanned copies of the EC8A to the IReV therefore did not electronically transmit the result of the polling unit to the collection system. “The polling officials mentioned several factors that stopped or inhibited the upload and transmission such as (1) wrong password, (2) No Password (3) No Network (4) Device Low battery (5) Presidential IReV not working. “When approached, INEC through its spokesperson, Mr Felix Okoye, insisted it was a mere glitch and that the IRev will be back in no time. “To our greatest chagrin, the chairman of INEC began to collate the results and start receiving results from the state returning officers without these results being transmitted or uploaded in the IReV. “This is a violation of the extant laws that require all results to be uploaded and transmitted to IReV. “We therefore request that the commission should immediately halt the ongoing return exercise and announcement of results until these results are uploaded and transmitted to IRev.”

Politics / We’ll Review Elections, If…. – INEC Chair by OddsDoc(f): 8:42pm On Feb 28, 2023 |
Chairman, Independent National Electoral Commission INEC, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu has expressed the readiness of the commission to review the 2023 general elections as demanded by some political parties “where absolutely necessary”. The Peoples Democratic Party PDP and Labour Party LP had on Monday led some opposition parties to demand that the election be reviewed midway into the collation of the presidential results. Yakubu had declined the request, on the grounds that the law was clear that the collation process has to be completed first before any process for review can be undertaken. However, at the resumption of the collation exercise on Tuesday, Yakubu said he will stick to the law. “In accordance with the new Electoral Act particularly under Section 65 of the Electoral Act, we will review the election where it is absolutely necessary”, he declared. IPAC expresses support Earlier, the Inter-Party Advisory Council IPAC had expressed support for the commission, urging it to not accede to the request to halt the process. IPAC chairman, Yabagi Sani who spoke on behalf of the parties at the National Collation Centre , however acknowledged that there were challenges, but added that they were not enough to truncate the process. He said; “We are here with most of the members of the council. We are here to express our delight that this process should continue, this is because when democracy fails, political parties are the first casualties and the politicians are the biggest losers. “Democracy is crucial to the people of this country and we believe that the elections are the fundamental pillars of our democracy. So the mere fact that we held this election amid the current circumstances, we need to congratulate this country. “We are not been mindful of the challenges in the country, but the commission and political parties experienced some of the unexpected development. From our findings, it is not uncommon to experience such in any technology usage. “We believe that we are at a crossroads but Nigerians are highly resilient. “Democracy is a journey and the journey so far we have to congratulate ourselves because Nigeria matters in things globally. We should sum up the courage to conclude this process. “It is not that we are happy or we don’t understand the pains of our people but in a democracy according to the popular maxim ‘the show must go on’ not that we just wanted to have this as a show but this country is a country of greatness. “Mr Chairman my members are here to encourage you to go ahead and ensure that the process is concluded and concluded well. “Some of our members who have issues can now do what the constitution made provision for, which is to seek redress. “So we want to say because of this country and the importance of this process to our country of course without prejudice to the position some of our members must have taken but we must be on the side of history that this process is concluded and Nigeria becomes greater”, he stated On his part, National Chairman and Presidential Candidate of Zenith Labour Party ZLP, Chief Dan Nwanyanwu, cautioned against burning down the country for partisan interests. “We have passed through many elections and I must say that there is no where in the world were there are no problems, not even in the US. “Without prejudice to whatever challenges, we must not burn down Nigeria. Nigeria must exist first before we can become whatever we become. “In this election, there were no problems with BVAS until the end of the election and it worked well throughout. it is the best option to go. “So, go ahead with the process. We are confident with the process. Nobody should crucify the INEC chairman”, he declared.

Politics / Obi Wins Port Harcourt LG With 62,451 Votes by OddsDoc(f): 9:49pm On Feb 27, 2023 |
The Labour Party has won the presidential election in Port Harcourt City Local Government Area of Rivers State, one of the largest councils in the state. The party beat the Peoples’ Democratic Party and the All Progressives Congress to second and third positions by a wide margin. In the results released by the Port Harcourt City Collation Officer, Prof Victoria Olumide, the LP polled 62451, while the PDP and APC polled 7203 and 5562 respectively. The vote polled by the APC in Port Harcourt city is a threat to the entire results so far collated, although Obio/Akpor, Governor Nyesom Wike’s LGA which had yet to be collated has the largest voting strength in the state. The State Collation Officer for the presidential election, Prof Charles Adias, had said the three remaining LGAs may be taken tomorrow (Tuesday) if they were not ready. Meanwhile, officials of some parties had invaded the office of the Independent National Electoral Commission along Aba Road, accusing the Port Harcourt City collation officer of bias. This came after a mild drama at the entrance of the collation centre when the Port Harcourt City LGA collation officer was escorted into the premises by a team of security operatives. But soon after her entry, there was pandemonium at the gate, as the police prevented a group of persons who tried to force themselves into the INEC building. One of the agents while shouting said, “We will not accept the result because she mutilated them. She also ran away with our National Assembly results.” But Prof Adias had asked the protesting officials to present their grievances properly and through the appropriate channels. The three LGAs yet to be collated are Degema, Ahoada East and Obio/Akpor. The Labour Party has now won a total of five of the 20 LGAs so far collated. Credit: punchng.com 1 Like

The Inspector General of Police, Usman Baba said activities of terrorists, bandits, and members of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB and the Eastern Security Network, ESN portend a challenge for the 2023 general elections. The IGP stated this at a media briefing in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory on Friday. He said, “Activities of bandits, terrorists, and secessionists and self-actualisation elements popularly known as IPOB or ESN still remain a challenge.” According to Baba, political thuggery as well as intra and inter-party crises also pose a challenge to the February 25, 2023 poll. He said continuous attacks on facilities of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) by “subversive and anti-democratic elements” still remain a challenge. Baba said no quasi-security organisation like Amotekun Corps in the South-West, Ebubeagu in the South-East or the Benue Guards will be allowed to participate in Saturday’s poll. The IGP stated, “However, I have issued directive that no quasi-security organisation is to be involved in policing the political process.” He restated the commitment of the police to ensure free and fair polls. On the challenges faced by the police ahead of the general elections, Baba said, “Much as the Nigerian Police has perfected plans to engender a peaceful electoral process, the following have been identified as possible challenges. “They are with us, and we will continue to manage it. For us to manage these challenges, we have upscaled our operations and therefore believe that we have conditioned the atmosphere more than before. “In other words, our analysis of the crime situation in Nigeria has dropped drastically compared to what we have recorded as crime and criminality in the last one month.”

Politics / 65 Political Parties Adopt Tinubu As President by OddsDoc(f): 10:19pm On Feb 23, 2023 |
Barely 48 hours to the February 25, 2023 elections in Nigeria, 65 Deregistered political parties that are members of the Forum of Political Parties, FPP, in Lagos State, have unanimously endorsed the candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Bola Tinubu for president of Nigeria. FPP, is an umbrella body of both Registered and Deregistered political parties in the State Lagos State, Chairman of the Forum and a two-time Chairman of the Lagos State Inter-Party Advisory Council, IPAC, Kolawole Ajayi, who stated this at a World Press Conference, held on Thursday, February 23, added that the choice and decision of the 65 Deregistered Political Parties from the FPP to pitch their tent and support the presidential ambition of Tinubu were hinged on the candidate’s inspiring pedigree in both private and public life. Present at the event were the 65 party chairmen, members and supporters of the following political parties, AD, ACD, PPA, NCMP, AGAP, MAJA UDP, UPN, APA, FJP Hope, RAP, LPN, DA DPP, LM, PDC, UPP ACPN, NPM, among others. According to Ajayi, Tinubu has maintained the highest rectitude in leadership, with much interest in effective building and utilisation of human and material resources to attain unprecedented development, which he exemplified as a governor in Lagos State. “Forum of Political Parties (FPP) is an umbrella body of both Registered and Deregistered political parties in Lagos State. 65 members of the FPP are deregistered political parties, but with all their full political structures on the ground across all the 20 Local Government Areas of Lagos State. “One of the leading roles of political parties is to checkmate political governance. And over the years, FPP has been doing that; ensuring that Lagos State and Nigerians get the best in leadership by blazing the trail in electing the right and people-centric political leadership across the board. “As major stakeholders in the democratic governance in our dear country Nigeria, the 2023 elections present a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for Nigerians to truly get it right. “That informed our decisions for over six months to periodically evaluate the presidential candidates of all political parties in the race for the forthcoming presidential elections. We have studied their manifestos. “We have taken accounts of their public and private lives. After a series of stakeholders and Board of Trustees meetings, we became unwaveringly convinced that only one person among all of the presidential candidates has the basic requisites and intimidating pedigree to consolidate Nigeria’s fledging democracy and deepen development; unite the country and redefine democracy as government of the people, by the people and for the people. That one man is Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC). “We are here today to endorse him for the top job, and to ensure that all the party leadership, members and supporters of the 65 Deregistered political parties here present at today’s event work to ensure victory for Asiwaju Tinubu at the presidential polls,” Ajayi said. He further stated how Tinubu turned around Lagos’s infrastructure and economy as a governor between 1999 and 2007, and how he gave opportunities to people of different tribes in his government. Ajayi, therefore, promised that the group would deliver over four hundred thousand votes for Tinubu in Lagos, at the presidential polls. Corroborating the forum’s Chairman, the Lagos State party Chairman of the Progressives Peoples Alliance (PPA), and a former Deputy Governorship Candidate of the PPA, as well as the former Assistant Secretary of the IPAC in Lagos State, Idowu Oguntoyinbo, stressed that only Tinubu has what it takes to revive Nigeria and consolidate on the humongous infrastructural achievements of President Buhari. “I can proudly say that today has marked a new thing as the 65 Deregistered Political Parties who are active members Forum of Political Parties in Lagos State has unanimously endorsed the most competent and experienced presidential candidate for the forthcoming presidential elections, in the person of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu. “Though we are from different political parties, but for 65 political parties to unanimously endorse one man today is absolutely phenomenal, and a testament to the fact that Nigeria is on a threshold of making an inspiring history come February 25, 2023. “Asiwaju Tinubu has been of a great service to humanity and Nigeria. For someone who stood firm to ensure democracy was entrenched at the detriment of his life and that of his family; for someone whose midas touch and transformative leadership have today advanced development of Lagos State into a mega-city; for someone who has helped and built men across all strata, religion and region; and for someone who eased out the monsterous PDP administration in Nigeria to usher in pure and undiluted democratic governance, it can only be fair for us to support his presidential ambition as a people who want continuous democratic growth and development. ”As we have today endorsed him, we are exceedingly happy seeing that this day and event came through. On Asiwaju Mandate we, the 65 Deregistered parties and members of the Forum of Political Parties in Lagos State, stand”, Oguntoyinbo reiterated. The Chairman of MAJA party in Lagos and Secretary of the FPP, as well as former Lagos State IPAC Secretary, Shola Omolola, encourage Nigerians to to go out en-mass to vote Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu because according to him, Tinubu is the only presidential candidate with proven track records that set him apart from other. He maintained that Tinubu leadership would spell a new and ideal dawn in constitutional democracy, creation of opportunities and infusion of ideas that are in tandem with the 21st century global democratic best practices. 2 Likes

Politics / Nigerians Not Ready For Igbo President – Orji Kalu by OddsDoc(f): 9:15pm On Feb 22, 2023 |
The Chief Whip of the Senate, Orji Kalu, said Nigerians are not ready for a President of the South-East extraction. Kalu stated this while speaking on Channels Television’s programme, “The 2023 Verdict” on Wednesday. According to Kalu, a former governor of Abia State, the February 25 presidential election is not the best outing for the Igbo people, because the people of the South-East need the support of five other regions for one of their own to be President. He said, “It is not the best outing for us (Igbo people) because for you to become the President of Nigeria, you need other regions.” One of the contestants of Igbo extractions among the 18 presidential candidates for the Saturday election is Labour Party’s Peter Obi. Kalu, a senatorial candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC for Abia North Senatorial District had dismissed the chances of Obi. He said, “I’m well-experienced; I ran for President in 2007 and I’m not sure Nigerians are yet ready for a President of Igbo extraction. I’m not sure because I have tried to nose around that. We have five other regions to come up with and I am not sure. According to Kalu, the people of the South-East are the best professionals but not the best politicians. He said, “We do politics with emotions and I want Igbos to stop doing politics with emotions; I want Igbos to do practical politics.” Kalu expressed confidence that APC presidential candidate, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu will win in Abia State and the South-East zone. ‘PDP G5 govs will work for Tinubu’ Meanwhile, Kalu further said five aggrieved governors of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, popular as the G5/Integrity Group will work for Tinubu’s presidency. Recall that the G5 comprised of Governor Nyesom Wike (Rivers), Samuel Ortom (Benue), Seyi Makinde (Oyo), Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia), and Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi (Enugu). The aggrieved PDP governors have been at war with the PDP, asking that the party’s National Chairman, Iyorchia Ayu steps down for a southern replacement as a precondition to support PDP flag bearer, Atiku Abubakar. But, while the PDP governors have not publicly announced their preferred candidate, Ortom has declared his support for Obi. However, Kalu said he doesn’t believe Ortom, insisting that the G5 will work for Tinubu. The APC lawmaker said, “The G5 came together and they are working together and I don’t even believe the governor of Benue State, possibly; “…he just wants to use that (endorsement) to win an election because the G5, from inside sources, have made up their minds that they are not going to work for any other person than Senator Ahmed Bola Tinubu, the presidential candidate of the APC.”

He stated, “We have reached an agreement with BA and Lufthansa to grant discounts to Nigerians coming back to vote. “We didn’t go with a list to say only APC members be given discount but that everyone should benefit”, he added. Omole who is also the Chairman of Nigeria Diaspora Voting Council said the APC standard bearer, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu has promised to work with the National Assembly to ensure greater inclusion of Nigerians in the Diaspora in the country’s political process. He said the directorate has gone around several countries, campaigning for Tinubu, and that the number of Nigerians with Permanent Voter Cards PVCs in Cotonou, Benin Republic, and who are willing to come vote for Tinubu was shocking. “The global feedback is positive. We have over 1.6 million diasporans and if o qere to hazard a guess, I believe that close to a million will be coming to vote for Tinubu. “I strongly believe that by 6 pm on Saturday, the 25th of February, we will be celebrating the election. Remember we can actually view the result in real-time online. Yes, INEC may still take their time because they have to do the collation obviously, officially, but I strongly believe that this election would be done and dusted by 6pm. “Why do I say that? Like I mentioned earlier on, you need to see the feedback from the people. We were at the flag-off in Jos, I was in Kano, I was in Minna, I was in Borno, you need to see the response from Nigerians. They just can’t wait. I don’t see any runoff in this election and I believe that by 6pm, we will be done and dusted. “Obviously, our principal is head and shoulder above any other person out there and Nigerians have actually responded well and I am sure that they will come out en masse to vote for him “Probably on Monday, we would be back here and I am going to refer to this day that I said that we will be done by 6pm”, he added. 5 Likes 1 Share
