Politics / Lawan Wants State Of Emergency Declared In Power Sector by ogbetaNews(f): 7:33am On Dec 10, 2019 |
President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan on Monday called on the Executive to, as a matter of urgency, declare a state of emergency in the power sector to overcome the legion of problems stalling steady power supply in Nigeria. Lawan stated this while declaring open a one-day round-table discussion with the theme: “Addressing Nigeria’s Power Problems” organized by the Senate Committee on Power. The Senate President said the privatization of the power sector in 2005 and 2013 was a grand scheme conceived with the intention to defraud Nigeria. He said, “For me, if there’s any sector of our economy that is so important and yet so challenged, it is the power sector. I believe that this is a sector that needs a declaration of emergency. “This is an opportunity for us in this round-table to exhaustively discuss not only the problems of the power sector in Nigeria, but the solutions and way forward. “The truth is that we all know what is wrong. What we really need to do is to have the political will to take on the challenges generally. “From the electricity power reform of 2005 to the privatization of Gencos and Discos and to what is happening today, we know that everything is fraud. If we play the ostrich, in the next ten years we will be talking about the same things. “I think the time has come for us to have courage. I want to remind us, that we have signed the African Continental Free Trade Agreement. What will give us an edge is to have a competitive environment. “Our industries and businesses must be able to produce things that can compete favourably with products produced in other countries in Africa. We are not in that position today, and we all know the consequences of that. “Even our citizens, who have capital, will rather relocate to Ghana, produce whatever they want and bring to Nigeria to sell. Where does that leave our country? No employment opportunities; Nigeria becomes a dumping ground.” The Senate President, therefore, called for a review of the privatization exercise undertaken by the Goodluck Jonathan administration which led to a takeover of the power sector by private Generating Companies (Gencos) and Distribution Companies (Discos). https://www.pmnewsnigeria.com/2019/12/09/lawan-wants-state-of-emergency-declared-in-power-sector/amp/ 5 Likes 2 Shares

Politics / Senate Passes 2020 Budget Of N10.594 Trillion by ogbetaNews(f): 3:54pm On Dec 05, 2019 |
Nigerian Senate on Thursday passed the 2020 budget of N10.594 trillion into law. This is against the proposed budget of N10.33 trillion presented to the joint National Assembly by President Muhammadu Buhari in October, 2019. The passage of the budget, however, represents record breaking and a deviation from what was obtained in the 8th National Assembly in which budget were passed almost eight months after it was presented. Chairman, Senate Committee on Appropriation, Senator Barau Jibrin, said the increase of N264 billion into the budget allowed for interventions in critical areas such as national security, road infrastructure mines and steel development, health among others. According to him, statutory transfer stood at N560.5 billion, Recurrent Expenditure at N4.8 billion, Capital Expenditure at N2.5 billion, Debt Servicing at N2.7 billion, Fiscal Deficit at N2.3 trillion and Deficit to GDP of 1.52 per cent. Politics / Ondo APC, PDP Clash Over Akeredolu Daughter’s Wedding by ogbetaNews(f): 7:23am On Dec 05, 2019 |
The Ondo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party has criticised the state governor, Mr Rotimi Akeredolu, for celebrating his daughter’s wedding in Mauritius, saying the governor wasted the resources of the state on the event. The governor, his family members and some of his aides were in Mauritius on Saturday for the wedding after the traditional part of the wedding had been celebrated in Owo, Ondo State in September. The PDP, in a statement by its Director of Media and Publicity, Mr Zadok Akintoye, alleged that the governor was being insensitive to the plight of the people of the state by allegedly using state fund for her daughter’s ceremony abroad. Akintoye said, “It is on record that this APC-led government remains the most anti-people government in the history of Ondo State and one that has glorified capitalism, nepotism, tribalism and wanton disregard for the welfare of the people. “Within the last two years, the governor has celebrated weddings of his children across the world from Canada to the United States and now Mauritius at the expense of citizens of this state without any sense of respect to the people he leads. How else can one explain the present display of affluence and disdain for the people?” However, in its reaction, the state chapter of the All Progressives Congress, in a statement by its Publicity Secretary, Mr Alex Kalejaiye, said the opposition party was only seeking relevance by criticising the governor on the event. Kalejaiye said, “The APC in Ondo State has viewed as puerile, myopic, and avoidable, the incoherent argument of the PDP that the recent wedding of a daughter of Mr Governor in Mauritius was an act of ‘insensitivity.’ Source: https://www.ogbeta.ng/2019/12/ondo-apc-pdp-clash-over-akeredolu.html

Crime / Nigerians To Pay N1m Fine If They Hire Undocumented Migrants From January 2020 by ogbetaNews(f): 10:28pm On Dec 02, 2019 |
The Federal Government has insisted that any undocumented alien that fails to take part in the e-registration of the Nigeria Immigration Service will be deported after the January 12, 2020 deadline. The NIS spokesman, Sunday James, who stated this in a telephone interview with The PUNCH, also said any Nigerian who engaged undocumented migrants as security guards, nannies or housemaids could be sentenced to seven years in jail and fined N1m by the court as from January 2020. The NIS also said aliens who failed to participate in the ongoing e-registration would be deported and might be barred from returning to Nigeria. James admonished Nigerian employers of irregular migrants to encourage them to register with the NIS in order to avoid the stiff sanctions awaiting defaulters. He stated that the concerned foreigners, including ECOWAS nationals, had till January 12 to register on the NIS portal. James disclosed that over 30,000 migrants had registered in the Federal Capital Territory since the programme started in July. https://punchng.com/jan-12-date-for-illegal-aliens-deportation-stands-fg/amp/ 5 Likes 1 Share

Foreign Affairs / Nigerians Are Free To Come Into South Africa- South African Minister Of Tourism by ogbetaNews(f): 8:58am On Nov 29, 2019 |
Mmamoloko Kubayi-Ngubane, South Africa’s Minister of Tourism, on Thursday called on Nigerians to continue visiting the country as the rainbow nation remained open for visitors from across the globe. Kubayi-Ngubane made the call during an engagement session with Nigerian tourism stakeholders in Lagos against the backdrop of the recent xenophobic attacks in South Africa. She said that there was a great need to advance bilateral relations between Nigeria and South Africa in the creative industry to achieve remarkable success for the two nations and the African continent. The minister said South Africa regretted the situation, acknowledging that such attacks had happened in the past and the authorities had taken steps to ensure it was not repeated. “I want you all to know that South Africa is open for visitors from Nigeria and other parts of the world as against insinuations by many that the country is repelling visitors. “Friendship between South Africa and Nigeria precedes South Africa’s democracy. We didn’t achieve our democracy on our own; we stood on the shoulders of many African nations who fought with us to achieve the democracy we enjoy today. “To ensure this does not reoccur, the President has appointed a former President of Tanzania and Mozambique as part of the people to find lasting solutions to the problem,” she said. Crime / EFCC Arraign Pastor For Allegedly Stealing $90,000 Worth Of Property In Ogun by ogbetaNews(f): 8:16pm On Nov 25, 2019 |
Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC Monday arraigned Pastor, Afolabi Samuel before an Ikeja Special Offences Court, Lagos for allegedly stealing to a tune of $90, 000 and N4.5m property of the Registered Trustees of the Living Faith Church, Canaan land, Ota, Ogun State. Samuel who was the accountant and member of the church was brought by the commission on a two-count charge bordering on stealing and conspiracy before Justice Mojisola Dada. The EFCC prosecutor, S. O. Daji, alleged that the defendant, who worked as the treasurer of the church, committed the alleged offences sometime on September 24 and December 31, 2018, in Lagos. Daji informed the court that the offences are contrary to Sections 278, 285 and 490 of the Criminal law of Lagos State No. 11, 2011. The commission said that Samuel and one Mrs Blessing Kolawole, a staff of the Covenant University (now at large), conspired and dishonesty stole money and property of the Registered Trustees of the Living Faith Church. The Living Faith Church Pastor and Mrs Kolawole were accused of dishonestly converting the sum of $90, 000 and N4.5 million to their own personal use. According to a petition to EFCC dated June 26, 2019, and signed by Chioma Okwuanyi & Co legal practitioners, Pastor Samuel was employed in the Accounts Department of the Church to maintain proper records of funds. The firm, acting as Solicitors to the Registered Trustees of the Living Faith Church, said that Both Pastor Samuel and Mrs Kolawole connived with other criminals and started taking criminal advantage of their positions as the Church’s Treasurer and staff of the University respectively. The firm said “The duo started carrying out various acts of breach of trust and fraudulent commission of unconscionable economic crime and sabotage, by unlawfully diverting to their private use, the Church’s money in Pastor Samuel’s custody without the permission of the Church. “The duo continued doing so until sometime in the month of December 2018 when they ran out of luck and all their secret acts of economic sabotage and financial crime of fraudulently tampering with the church’s money were revealed. “When confronted by the church, Pastor Samuel, who lives around the church at Raji Oba, Lagos admitted committing the act and even voluntarily made a written confession where he detailed how they have been stealing from the church”. Justice Dada remanded him at the Correctional Centre and adjourned the matter till December 10, 2019, for the hearing of bail application. Crime / Native Doctor Who Burnt Hands Of 13yrs Old Ovey Friday Finally Arrested (photos) by ogbetaNews(f): 8:34am On Nov 22, 2019 |
Last week, Ogbeta.ng shared the sad story of 13-year-old Ovey Friday, who lost both his hands after his stepmother took him to a native doctor and coals of fire were heaped on his tied hands after he was accused of being a wizard. The stepmother had accused him of sleeping with her in the dream and she needed him to confess and also get the spirit out of him. She took him to her native doctor in Wulko Community, Nasarawa Eggon Local Government Area, Nasarawa State where hot coals were placed on the boy's tied hands. The incident led to a permanent deformity of his right hand while the left hand was amputated at an Abuja hospital on November 14th. The police have arrested the accused native doctor, 45-year old Adamu Musa. When interrogated, Musa denied claims of burning Ovey’s hands, insisting he only rubbed a herbal substance on his hands. “They are saying, I burnt his hands but I didn’t burn his hands. It is just a medicine I rubbed over his hands to ascertain if he is possessed or not and I told them(the stepmother and paternal grandmother), that if he is possessed, he would vomit and if he is not his hands will swell severely. It is the medicine that made his hands like that because he is not possessed'' he said The victim however dismissed the herbalists claim. Ovey in a chat with Channels TV, said ''He is lying, he burnt my hands and the whole act didn’t happen in the presence of my stepmother and paternal grandmother. They were in another room and we were in another” . Ovey’s father, Friday who did not show up after the October 28th incident amidst several phone calls was also not present during the surgery. He, however, arrived Wulko community in Nasarawa Eggon local government area of Nasarawa state, Monday,18th November which is three weeks after the ordeal and is yet to visit his son at the hospital. Commenting on the arrest, Bola Longe, the state police commissioner, said the suspects will be charged to court. “They are being subjected to exhaustive interrogation to know the veracity of their statement. We will definitely charge them to court when we complete the investigation and it will be very soon and we want to use the case to send a message to members of the public particularly those who are saddled with the affairs of taking care of children. No one should show wickedness any child and quine who does so will face the full wrath of the law,” he said. Source: https://www.ogbeta.ng/2019/11/native-doctor-who-burnt-hands-of-13yrs.html

Sports / ‘I’m Willing To Kill You, If You Are Ready To Die’ – Wilder Warns Ortiz by ogbetaNews(f): 8:22am On Nov 22, 2019 |
Heavyweight champ Deontay Wilder has made it clear he has no plans to censor himself when he goes up against Luis Ortiz this weekend. Wilder (41-0-1, 40 KOs) didn’t back down in response to comments made by Saturday’s opponent Luis Ortiz (31-1, 26 KOs) ahead of their rematch at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas Ortiz came frighteningly close to a stoppage win in Round 7 of their 2018 title bout before Wilder rallied for a 10th-round TKO, and the 40-year-old Cuban southpaw made a bold proclamation during the October press conference to announce the rematch when he said, “I’m a soldier and willing to die in the ring.” Asked to expand on his statement, Ortiz talked up his dream of becoming the first Cuban heavyweight champion. “I’m a soldier, I’m a soldier. I’m not going to back out of the battle and now, even less,” Ortiz told CBS Sports earlier this month. “This is my second chance and I’m not going to waste it.” Wilder, who was a guest on the “State of Combat” podcast this week, said he prefers to be facing someone with that mindset. “People say, ‘You know, you don’t really mean it.’ I mean every word that come out of my mouth,” Wilder said. “So by him saying he’s willing to die in the ring, that lets me know what type of warrior heart that he has. And I’m glad he accepted that contract of willing to die because I’m willing to try to do it. So it’s going to be an amazing fight. You don’t want to miss it.” Ortiz, who was floored by a Wilder uppercut in Round 5 only to get back up and fight, explained his loss as being caused more by a lack of conditioning than him succumbing to Wilder’s power. Ortiz went on to be dropped twice in Round 10 before referee David Fields waved off the fight without a count. “Even though it went down as a knockout, it wasn’t that,” Ortiz said through a translator. “I wasn’t knocked down, I was completely fatigued and destroyed tired. I would have preferred being knocked out.” To fix what he described as “my mistake” in the first fight, Ortiz has focused almost exclusively on building up his stamina and has appeared dramatically more ripped in training camp photos. But Wilder believes the Cuban would need more than stamina to face him. “He definitely knows the measurement of shape that he needs to be in to face a guy like Deontay Wilder because Deontay Wilder doesn’t come to play,” Wilder said. “Deontay Wilder comes to do serious damage, even to the level of killing a man. But that’s just my mindset, that’s just the way I am. “So good luck on that because where I am sitting, I don’t think that was the problem. It was that I was the better man, the stronger man, the faster man, more determined and more hungry. I’m a king and when you are a king, you get off your throne when it’s time for battle and when you’re done, you sit your ass down and take your armor off because it’s time to eat and that’s exactly what I have done.” Source: https://www.ogbeta.ng/2019/11/im-willing-to-kill-you-if-you-are-ready.html
