Politics / Complete Chaos In Rivers State House Of Assembly (full Details And VIDEO) by ogusbaba1(m): 8:00pm On Jul 09, 2013

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zM9P9nxNMA8

The Rivers state House of Assembly witnessed a very rowdy session today for some minutes after two months of adjournment as pro-Governor Rotimi Amaechi legislators battled five renegade lawmakers rooting for the political opponents of the governor.

The minority lawmakers, whose agenda was to impeach the governor made the impeachment of Speaker Otelemaba Amachree and other principal officers the first priority. They thus stole into the House of Assembly at about 8.30 am earlier before the normal sitting of the House and smuggled in a mace.

But they met eight Pro- Amaechi lawmakers including the Speaker Otelemaba Amachree, Chidi Llyod, the majority Leader and six others in the assembly.

Frustrated that their coup was a mission impossible , one of the five rebels, Evans Bapakaye Bipi, went straight to Chidi Llyod’s seat and physically assaulted him.

As Llyod and Bipi were having a fisticuff, the Speaker who stepped in to separate them was also attacked by Bipi.

Leader of the Rivers State House of Assembly Chidi Lloyd in the clinic after being beaten by armed thugs
A free-for -all started, with blows being exchanged by both sides.

Lloyd was injured, while Martins Amaehule another anti-Ameachi Lawmaker representing Obio-Akpor was also injured and rushed to St Patricks Hospital at Ogbunabali in Port Harcourt for treatment.

As the fracas degenerated, some of the pro-Amaechi lawmakers ran for their dear lives because of the many thugs brought into the Assembly premises by Bipi and his group.

The moment was seized by the minority lawmakers, as a member of the group, Victor Ihunwo, representing Port Harcourt constituency stepped into the Speaker’s seat to “Pilot “ the affairs.

Martins Amaehule moved the “motion” for the “Impeachment” of the Speaker who has been rushed out after the physical assault. Kelechi Worgu an anti-Amaechi, representing Omuma Constituency “supported” the motion and thereafter announced Bipi as the new “Speaker.”

Governor Amaechi who was alerted about the fracas and the breakdown of law and order at the Assembly, arrived at the Assembly chambers, just in time to hear Evans Babakaya Bipialaka give a vote thanks for his ‘election’ as speaker of four other members.

According to witnesses, Bipialaka on sighting the Governor, ordered some thugs and policemen to “shoot him…shoot him”, pointing at the Governor.

Amaechi was said to have walked towards him and replied: “Shoot me?”

The Governor thereafter ordered his security men that came with him to arrest Bipialaka. But Bipi’s orderly and Policemen who came with him resisted the arrest.

Bipi is the lawmaker who represents Ogu-Bolo Constituency, whose wedding was attended several weeks ago by Mrs Patience Jonathan as a Special Guest of Honour and Mother of the Day.

After the confrontation with the governor, Bipi and other other four lawmakers opposed to Amaechi left the assembly with their thugs.

After calm was restored, the house was re-convened at exactly 11.40 am with the Speaker, Otelemaba Dan-Amachree, presiding with 22 Lawmakers present.

P.M.News observed that there was still tension with thugs supporting the anti-Amaechi shouting that they be allowed into the Assembly but were prevented by pro-Amaechi supporters and House of Assembly Policemen.

The Governor later presented a minor amendment of the 2013 budget as it affects the capital expenditure only.

Mr Tele Ikuru, the Deputy Governor who read the proposed minor amendment on behalf of the Governor explained that the minor amendment only affects the capital expenditure.

The Deputy Leader Robinson Nnam Ewor moved a motion for the adoption of amendment and was supported by Mrs.Irene Inigba, the Chief Whip supported the motion.

Golden Chioma ,representing Etche Constituency II moved a motion that the amendment should be committed to the committee of the whole house.
The Speaker asked if there was a counter-motion but there was none.

The amendment was committed into the House of the whole of 22 members present and was later adopted. Amaechi had 28 members on his side since the political fight started. Those that were not at the sitting were said to have sustained injuries and were undergoing medical treatment.

However, Freddy Itolo-Ofen,the Press Secretary to Bipi told P.M.News in an interview that his boss was properly elected as the Speaker of the House by the Five lawmakers.

“Hon Evans Bipialaka the New Speaker was making his vote of thanks when the Governor arrived and ordered that he should be arrested, but was resisted by Bipialaka and his orderly”. - See more at: http://www.ogusbaba.com/2013/07/complete-chaos-in-rivers-state-house-of.html

Politics / Jonathan Must Probe Harassment Of Amaechi By Presidential Bodyguards – ACN by ogusbaba1(m): 9:28pm On Jun 27, 2013

The Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN, has risen in defense of Governor of Rivers State, Rotimi Amaechi, who was barred by Presidential Bodyguards from greeting President Goodluck Jonathan at a dinner in the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Wednesday.

The party has tasked the President to immediately order a probe into the matter which it described as shocking.

In a statement issued in Lagos on Thursday by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the party said the President should ensure that whoever was behind such a condescending treatment of a State Governor is properly sanctioned to serve as deterrent.

”We are making this call because we do not believe that, in spite of the reported frosty relations between the two, President Jonathan – as the father of the nation – will lend the weight of his high office to such a demeaning action as exhibited by the presidential security personnel.

”To believe that anyone occupying the esteemed office of the President of one of Africa’s most important nations will be a party to a situation in which any security aide will wilfully fence a state chief executive from paying his respects to the President at such an open gathering will be to think the worst of the occupier of that office. That is why we have chosen not to believe that this indeed occurred, and why we are calling on Mr. President to tell Nigerians that ‘it ain’t so’

”We shudder to think of what efforts are being made – including the use of national institutions – to undermine Gov. Amaechi if the treatment reportedly meted out to him at the dinner has the approval of the powers that be. We are even more worried at what will happen to a governor from the opposition who falls out of favour with the President, if a governor from the same party as the President can be so publicly humiliated,” it said

According to the ACN, “It is particularly incumbent on the President to clarify the report because Gov. Amaechi, the authentic Chairman of the Nigerian Governors’ Forum,NGF, extended an Olive Branch to President Jonathan by attending the dinner along with the other governors who voted him into the NGF chairmanship, despite the fact that the President is publicly supporting the losing faction of the NGF, in what is being seen as a democratic Faux pas.

The party said the President must learn to separate politics from governance by rising above petty partisanship as he steers the affairs of the state. “At this point, we have no choice than to draw attention to the recent speech by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon, Aminu Tambuwal, to welcome back the honourable members from their short break.

The Speaker had stated that, “I am strongly persuaded to state once again that from the little that we know, there is dichotomy between politics and governance; thus, there is a difference between a candidate in electoral contest on the platform of a political party and an elected official who has assumed a non partisan responsibility and taken oath to protect and preserve the constitution, to serve the people and the nation.

“Needless to say that generally, whenever partisan interests conflict with national interest, it is partisan interests that must be sacrificed in the preservation of the national interest. The oath we took is that of constitutionalism and national service and not of suffocating partisanship.”

ACN further urged all political office holders, irrespective of their party affiliation, to eschew the kind of pervasive and petty partisanship that led to the reported disrespect shown to an elected State Governor by a security agent being paid with taxpayers’ money.

The investigations revealed that the students had been donating their blood for money.

One of the students nabbed at the shop and simply identified as Emeka, a JSS2 pupil, confessed to donating his blood thrice for the sum of N1, 500 on each occasion with Sola asking them “not to tell anyone about it.”

Crime / 4 Convicts Hanged In Edo by ogusbaba1(m): 11:53pm On Jun 24, 2013
Nigerian authorities on Monday hanged four prisoners, an official said, in what was believed to be the country's first known executions since 2006, drawing outrage from rights activists.

The justice commissioner in Edo state in southern Nigeria confirmed the hanging of the four prisoners, who had been convicted of either armed robbery or murder, he said.

According to the commissioner, all their appeals had been exhausted and their death warrants were signed.

"The court gave the judgement this afternoon that the execution could go ahead and the prison authority went ahead," Henry Idahagbon told AFP.

He added that the executions were carried out by the prison service, a federal agency, and not the state government.

However, he said he was informed by prison authorities of the executions. Edo state Governor Adams Oshiomhole signed two of the death warrants since the crimes occurred in Edo, said Idahagbon, as required by law.

Governors from elsewhere signed the two other death warrants, he said. Since the prison system is federal, prisoners can be moved elsewhere in the country.

A fifth prisoner is also due to be executed, but his sentence dated back to the military era that ended in 1999 and called for him to be killed by firing squad, which prison authorities were not yet prepared to do, he said.

Nigeria has faced international scrutiny over its death penalty, with concerns over whether suspects receive a fair trial in a country where corruption is widespread.

While they would mark the first official, known executions since 2006, Nigerian security forces have been repeatedly accused of extra-judicial killings during that time period.

Amnesty International said in a statement that it had received "credible reports that authorities in the state of Edo ... have hanged four men in Benin City Prison on Monday -- the first known executions in the country since 2006."

"If confirmed, these executions mark a sudden, brutal return to the use of the death penalty in Nigeria, a truly dark day for human rights in the country," Amnesty deputy director for Africa, Lucy Freeman, said in the statement

The human rights organisation urged Nigerian authorities to stop all executions immediately and "return to the moratorium on executions in the country."

"We oppose the death penalty in all cases without exception, as it is the ultimate cruel, inhuman and degrading punishment," it said.

President Goodluck Jonathan recently called on state governors to sign death warrants, saying it was their responsibility under the law, according to local media reports.

According to Amnesty, around 1,000 people are thought to be on death row in Africa's largest oil producer and most populous nation.

Crime / My Dad’s Friend Raped Me 5 Times- GIRL by ogusbaba1(m): 8:02pm On Jun 16, 2013
CRIME: My Dad’s Friend Raped Me 5 Times- GIRL
A 10-year old girl (name withheld) who lives at Agbado ljaiye area of Lagos, has alleged that her father’s best friend, Sunday Nwankwo, raped her five times in two years.
Nwankwo was arraigned at the Magistrate’s Court 6, lkeja and sent to Kirikiri Prison as he could not perfect the stringent bail conditions granted to him by the magistrate.

The accused had pleaded not guilty to the charge of defiling a minor and having carnal knowledge of her forcefully.
He was granted bail on the condition that he provides three sureties in like sum of N100, 000 each, three years evidence of tax payment to the government and each of the surety must possess landed property worth N5million.

The accused was alleged to have been having sex with the little girl since she was eight years old.
Test conducted on the girl at the Orile Agege General Hospital showed that she was no longer a virgin.
The alleged illicit act was exposed when the three-year old brother of the victim told their mother that somebody used to lay his sister down when nobody was around.

Their mother became curious and questioned the girl, who later revealed that Nwankwo had been having sex with her, saying that he had slept with her five times.
According to the girl’s mother, “when I first asked her, she denied it but when I threatened to pour pepper on her, she opened up and said it was her father’s friend that slept with her. She said by the time I gave birth to my second son, that was the third time her father’s friend had slept with her. I gave birth to my second son two years ago, when she was eight years old.”

She explained that because the church the family attended was far, she usually asked her daughter and the rest to go to the Four Square Church in Nwankwo’s compound, which gave the man the opportunity to carry out the alleged act.
She said: “my husband has been feeding Nwankwo for years. People even thought my husband was his younger brother because of their closeness.”

Crime / CRIME: In 2013, 40 Abuja Towns Still Kill Twins! by ogusbaba1(m): 7:42pm On Jun 16, 2013

In 2013, 40 Abuja Towns Still Kill Twins! A Missionary Recounts Bizarre Traditional Practices in the FCT
There are some stories you read and do a double take at the calendar to ascertain if we are really in 2013. The bizarre account of a missionary couple who witnessed the killing of twins and mothers whose children die within three months of a baby’s birth is one of them.
This is coming 98 years after the death of Mary Slessor, the Scottish missionary to Nigeria, who led crusades that stopped some societies from killing twin babies at birth.

In a report published today, recounted the story of Olusola Stevens, the North Central Director of the Christian Missionary Foundation (CMF) and his wife who witnessed the practice of killing infants or burying some alive with their dead mothers even in the domain of the Federal Capital Territory.
According to the report, in Bassa Komo, Abuja, it is abomination to be born a twin; or if a mother dies within three months of a baby’s birth; or if a child grows upper teeth first or is born with defect. These are all faults of the baby or babies involved. To the people of the community, these are signs that such babies were fabricated in the factory of the devil and are themselves evil. Such offences by the evil baby or babies are punishable by burial alive.
“If you are not very observant, you will not know this practice is going on and it took us some time to actually confirm. Some of the enlightened indigenes of the area deny the practice, maybe out of shame, but it is still happening till date,” Stevens confirmed.
He has been in the FCT since the late 80s, reaching out to the people in Bassa Komo, the Gbagyi Yama and the Ganagana. His Foundation has been able to rescue some of the children, some of whom have been reunited with their families, even though they are still living with the Stevens.
How they are killed Twins:
When they are delivered, they will be poisoned (the child dies gradually) or strangulated after being forcefully taken from the mother by masquerades that women are not allowed to see. Once they are killed, an altar will be raised on the walls of their huts to worship their spirits and make sacrifices to ward them off from returning.
Mum’s death after birth: If a woman delivers and dies during childbirth, the child will be tied to the body of the dead mother and buried alive with her. If the nursing mother should die of any cause without weaning the baby, the baby will be accused of having strange powers that killed the mother, the penalty for this is also death. In some villages, the children may be abandoned on the grave of the dead mother while some are left unattended to in the village, leading to starvation and eventual death.
Wrong teeth child: A child that grows upper teeth first is also bound to die. The couple discovered that babies that grow the upper teeth first are also killed because they are bad omen. This is neatly done, an outsider may never know when and how unless you understand their language and pay close attention to young babies in the area.
Stevens noted that up to 40 villages are still involved in such practices in the Abuja. He also added that the practice is not common among the Abuja indigenes alone, “We also learnt from some other agencies that we work closely with that twins are not allowed to live in Uturu, Abia State,” he told Newsmen.
Stevens and his wife have now set up a home called the Divine Heritage Home where the rescued children live. So far, the foundation has rescued about 33 kids spread across several villages. Some of the kids were rescued at tender ages, a day old, two weeks old, a month old and so on.
At the time they started rescuing the children, one of them had asked the villagers if they would take the child back if after four years the child remains healthy. They bluntly refused, saying the evil spirit would still be in their bodies.
However, they have continued to preach to members of the community, shelter all the children and send them to school among many other philantropic activities.
We admire the courage of this couple and the good work they are doing with the foundation.
