"We are gathered as members of the union to protest against the failure of the federal government to sincerely honour all the agreements it entered into with ASUU.

Aribodor advised that the government should desist from encouraging unnecessary proliferation of public universities without funding the existing public Varsities.

He noted that the existing Varsities would take care of academic needs of students if they are adequately developed and noted that welfare of lecturers if given proper attention will ensure optimal productivity.

He said that many of these issues mentioned have outlived successive governments without any resolution, and other issues have been created by consecutive governments as well.

He cited the implementation of the IPPIS, which came with the Muhammadu Buhari administration.
Crime / Anambra LG Workers Dismissed Alleged Diversion Of Soludo's N16.8m Largesse by okeychris(m): 1:46am On Jul 01
By Okechukwu Onuegbu

Local Government workers across the 21 Council Areas in Anambra State, Sunday, dismissed as an untrue, falsehood and unfounded reports making around that ₦16,800,000 largesse provided by governor Chukwuma Soludo was either mismanaged or diverted.

A viral social media report attributed to one Ekene Okoye had claimed that the ₦20,000 governor Chukwuma Soludo doled out to 40 workers per local government area as transport fare at opening ceremony of Anambra State Local Government Commission Service (ASLGSC) week held last Tuesday June 25, 2024, was diverted by the Commission's Chairman, Barr. Vincent Ifeanyi Ezeaka.

But the workers, however, dismissed the report as fake, malicious and unfounded publication, noting that all those in attendance to the programme duly received their shares of the largesse as pronounced by Governor Chukwuma Soludo.

Speaking through the Chairman, Publicity Subcommittee of the 2024 LG Commission Service week, Comrade Nnamdi Nweke, the commission further hailed the governor for granting approval and providing all the relevant supports that led to the successful event.

Nweke, who wondered why a journalist could delve into the unethical practices and urged the media to always verify their information for balancing and objectivity to avoid misinforming the public or damaging people reputation.

He described the viral report as spurious and odious misinformation from mischief makers and enemies of the commission targeted at maligning the hard earned reputation of their hardworking Chairman, Ezeaka.

Also speaking, the Deputy Director/Public Relations Officer, Local Government Service Commission, Comrade Agu Chidi, added that the author of the report had a. Ulterior motives of rubbishing the monumental achievements of the Commission in the implementation of the Governor's Local Government reforms, and Zero tolerance to corruption.

"Barrister Vin Ezeaka, the Commission's Chairmen, had shown an uncommon dedication and exemplary commitment in pursuit of the lofty ideals of the Governor in the transformation of the local government system, a development which has won the commission national laurels.

"For the sake of clarity, Barrister Vin Ifeanyi Ezeaka never disbursed any money, but ordered that the attendees transport fares be shared to all the local Government workers at the Dora Akunyili Women Development Center, as directed by Mr Governor, Prof. Charles Chukwuma Soludo. The instruction was carried out with official dispatch in the presence of some Labour Leaders.

"All those who attended the ceremony have been paid, contrary to the erroneous and devious impression created by the enemies of the state. They all collected the ₦20,000 transport allowance as directed by the Governor and the lunch package provided by the Commission. It is therefore only in the weird imagination of mischief makers that the money was not appropriately shared," he added.

According to him, the just concluded Local Government Service Commission week was hugely successful and this has become the source of envy for those who, in their mischief, chose to paint the Commission in lurid colors to achieve less than noble intentions.

"We consider this rather absurd and surprising that some uninformed, disgruntled elements would go to the extent of making such baseless allegations against the person of Barrister Vin Ifeanyi Ezeaka whose pedigree as an incorruptible personality and impeccable record of zero tolerance for corruption have remained shining beacons of progress for everyone to behold.

"The Commission wishes to state, unequivocally, that no amount of vile propaganda by mischievous elements will distract it from the mission of leaving behind a legacy of service in the local government service in line with Mr Governor's mandate. We, therefore, warn all those who circulate such false information to retrace their steps and support genuine efforts at transformation of the Local Government system."

"The goal of creating a drug free world, after many decades of concerted efforts has not yet been achieved. Drug use of various types has remained stable or increased around the world, with damaging health, socioeconomic and legal ramifications for many individuals and families. "It focuses on intervention strategies rooted in science, research, compassion and full respect for human rights. Ladies and gentlemen, when you consider the cost of treatment and rehabilitation of drug dependent persons and the difficulty in getting over the drug use habit, investing in prevention is the best option. What is basically expected is that policies should be in place to delay initiation into drug use e.g. alcohol and cigarette should not be sold to people under age eighteen. It would also require that health and social services must be in place to ensure that those who are into drug use do not develop dependency.

This will take care of the challenge of non-availability of treatment centres for the drug challenge. The services in such centres should be affordable. The command is unwavered in the combating of the drug menace because we believe that the best prevention is to ensure that illicit drugs are not available."

SheddyJoe De Entertainer said he joined the entertainment industry in the early 2000s after his national youth service but abandoned it to satisfy the wish of his father who wanted him to join the civil service.

Anaku born artiste from Ayamelum Local Government Area of Anambra said he left Lagos in 2006 to join the state civil service due to family pressure and lack of fund to finance his dreams

According to him, I did not leave Lagos out of my own volition, my father who was a civil servant at that time insisted that I should have a secure and tenured job, he forced me to take up a job in the civil service.

“The take home pay at that time was poor, so I abandoned the job and went back to Lagos but my father and kinsmen read the riot act and I had to come back.

“That was how I joined the film and video censorship board department of the Ministry of Information and Culture,” he said .

Recalling his journey into the entertainment industry, SheddyJoe De Entertainer said one Keppy Ekepenyong spotted him during his service year and introduced him to Basorge Junior, a popular entertainer who linked him to Alibaba.

He said the entertainment industry could be used to liberate families economically if positively harnessed, adding that his mission was to be an inspiration to talented youths in the country and Anambra in particular.

“I lived in Alibaba's house for one year. Alibaba is the father of modern comedy in Nigeria. I was with him in Lekki, thanks to Basorge who linked me up with him.

"Basorge introduced me to music and comedy which I tried to combine because I am a total package but I later majored in comedy and Master of Ceremony.

“My first major stage show was made possible by Alibaba when he organised a show he called “Buying of Shares’’ in 2005 where he gave every upcoming comedian two minutes to perform, that was how I started doing my thing.

“Music was tasking and required a huge sum of money for studio production, video, marketing and all that and I could not do all that at that time because I did not have the money and nobody to sponsor me.

Music is my habit, I started long ago, my background affected me because we lacked the exposure that I needed to develop it,” he said.

The artiste called on youths with talents in music, comedy and other areas of entertainment in the area to start pursuing their dream without minding the challenges in the industry.

“I want to encourage upcoming entertainers in Anambra and Southeast to be focused and determined even though the industry is still not developed here, the best time to begin is now.

“There will always be challenges, but will surely surmount it,

“I am setting the pace, I believe it will open doors to more people and I hope to see more upcoming guys taking the bold step,” he said.

...Tinubu, Soludo, others, urged to prosecute churches, hospitals 'masquerading' as sickle cell healers

By Okechukwu Onuegbu

People living with sickle cell anaemia under the aegis of Association of People Living with Sickle Cell Disorder (APLSCD) have appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, governor Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra State and other 35 States governors to fish out and prosecute hospitals and churches masquerading as healers of the genetic disorder.

The sickle cell sufferers, who made the call at Agulu, Anaocha LGA, Anambra State, while celebrating the 2024 world sickle cell day, argued that prosecuting them accordingly would help in quick realising the aspiration of the United Nations to increase awareness on the genetic education and totally eradicate the sickle cell scourge on earth.

According to them, some health and religious institutions were still encouraging couples with genetic incompatibility to marry in pretence of love, medical or divine healings they possess even when they knew their claims were deceptive and could make the intending couples to give birth to sickle cell carriers.

Speaking at the occasion, a sickle cell sufferer, Miss Miriam Ifeduba, posited that such unscrupulous elements were the reasons sickle cell carriers were multiplying in the country, and asked the governments at all levels to beam their searchlight to institutions so as to sanitise the system.

Also speaking, another sickle cell sufferers, Miss Goodness Chima and Benson Chukwubikem explained that the anomaly was why many of them find it difficult attending churches to avoid been deceived by religious leaders who were in habits of using scriptural verses to convince them that they could be healed through tithing, offering or others.

The children particularly commended the Anambra State government led by Professor Chukwuma Soludo on his various initiatives geared towards ameliorating their sufferings but appealed to him and other spirited individuals to provide generously for their upkeep at Sickle Cell Orphanage and Underprivileged Home Agulu.

Reacting to the children's outcry, the Woman leader of the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA), Anaocha LGA, Mrs Ijeoma Sunny Egbune, urged parents, families, homes, associations, religious institutions, communities and others to train their children, wards and members on genotype education and insist they marry only when they had confirmed their compatibility from recognised hospitals.

Earlier, the National Coordinator, Association of People Living with Sickle Cell Disorder (APLSCD), Mrs Aisha Edwards Maduagwu advocated for fully implementation of Anambra State Sickle cell law which would help to end spreading of sickle cell anaemia by increasing the public awareness campaigns, promote research, and support individuals already affected by it.

Maduagwu, who is also the Director, Sickle Cell Orphanage and Underprivileged Home Agulu, commended all their benefactors from whom the organisation has been able to drastically reduce the flagrant births of sickle cell children "through holding our state government accountable in policy making and decisions."

"Through the intervention of Governor Charles Soludo, about 71 SCD persons became free beneficiaries in the health insurance scheme, under the Anambra State Health Insurance Agency. This move reduced the burden of medical bills that SCD individuals and their families have to pay in the cause of getting treatment. It is our hope that these benefits are also extended to cover all SCD individuals in Anambra State whose numbers run in the hundreds.

" Other key sponsors and brands can as well choose to register persons living with sickle cell disease to enjoy free health insurance. This is service to humanity! As an organization poised to guarantee the wellbeing of vulnerable sickle cell children, we are faced with certain challenges that inhibits our progress which includes the need for a permanent and central sickle cell center in Anambra State.

"The moral, psychological, emotional, and financial bearing needed for the management and rehabilitation of vulnerable sickle cell children is daunting. We are appealing for support to enable us acquire a piece of land to build a befitting structure for maximum convenience and productivity.

"Other needs as regards to the Sickle Cell Orphanage and Underprivileged Home includes, mobility to convey us from place to place; drugs and other medicare equipments; foodstuffs and beverages; clothing of varied ages; educational materials etc. Our vocational and skill acquisition center which is directly opposite the orphanage home also needs office and training equipments like sewing machines, clippers, laptops."

According to him, community pharmacists can collaborate with ASHIA for more impact through community outreach health programmes, as well as using their reach and services to get more people enrolled in the scheme by referring those having challenges in purchasing prescribed medications.

Politics / Anambra State Govt Urged To Boost Healthcare Through Evidence Based Programmes by okeychris(m): 1:03pm On Jun 16
Boost Healthcare through Local Investment, Evidence-Based Programmes, ATM Network tells Anambra govt

Coalition of Civil Society Networks on AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria (ATM Networks) has called on the Anambra State Government to invest in disease control, eradication, and other evidence-based intervention programs to boost healthcare delivery in the state.

The group urged the government to turn around and key in and support using the government's budget to drive the Community System Strengthening (CSS) programs of the ATM Networks in the state rather than allow foreign donors and partners to keep fighting diseases and other healthcare burdens of the people.

The group made the call at the State Media Meeting with Journalists on the ATM Anambra State Global Fund, GC-7/C19RM/RSSH project in the state. The project is aimed at increasing uptake services in AIDs, TB and Malaria treatments, and reducing factors that result in the disruption of essential health services due to the COVID-19 pandemic and preparedness for future pandemics and epidemics.

Addressing journalists, the State Coordinator, TB Network, Anambra State, Ifeyinwa Unachukwu disclosed that the project has already achieved tremendous results in the focal five local government areas it covered this year including Awka North, Idemili North, Njikoka, Onitsha North, and Orumba North, respectively.

According to her, the intervention has improved community engagement and ownership, resources mobilization for facilities, improved water and sanitation as well as HIV testing, malaria treatment, and TB screening. She also said it has led to a decrease in healthcare incidence and an increase in treatment adherence.

To address TB, HIV, Malaria, and gender-based violence in the state, she called for the extension of the National health insurance program to the poor, proper utilization of primary health funds, strengthening of primary health infrastructures, and for the government to address the inequality permeating our society.

She also said securing financial resources, renewing political leadership, fostering collaborations and community-led monitoring should be scaled up to eliminate diseases and the rising cases of gender-based violence in the state.

A Public Health expert and parasitologist, Prof. Dennis Aribodor in his speech, said the unpredictable nature of foreign aid most times affects the continuation and effective implementation of models designed to lift the health burdens of the people.

He urged the government to key into opportunities for disease control by interacting with stakeholders in the intervention areas to ensure the accommodation of more communities in the project.

Aribodor, who is the South-East Zonal Coordinator of the Civil Society Network in Malaria Control, Immunization and Nutrition said, "The external support we get for this project is merely sporadic and tangential and are time bound. We implore the state government to key into this model and make sure this goes around the state. It will only cost them just small money."

He urged the government to budget and ensure the release of the funds budgeted for interventions. According to him, the over-reliance on foreign donors and partners cannot always sustain programs of disease control in the state.

Aribodor urged the state government to intensify the fight for the elimination of malaria by declaring free treatment of the disease especially for vulnerable children and pregnant women in the state.

He said "There is also the need to make treatment of these diseases considerably free, while addressing hidden causes like transportation cost that make the free services of HIV/AIDs and TB treatments becoming inaccessible and not just unaffordable. For instance, for malaria, I don't think there is any public facility in the state whether primary or secondary where we have free Malaria treatment."

"Anambra state can treat every child free from malaria. Every child especially the most vulnerable, is described as under five and of course, pregnant mothers are very important to us."

Earlier, the State Programme Officer, for the TB Network's C19RM/RSSH project in Anambra, Onyekachi Ololo decried the negative impacts of dependency mostly experienced on funders, calling on the government to key in, fill the gap, and catalyze sustainable development in the communities.

"Government can come in and drive this C19RM/RSSH model because the results being generated from communities owning their healthcare facilities are crystal clear. It is expected that the government should be doing this for sustainability," he said.

Finally, he said the C19RM/RSSH project was implemented through the National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA), to support the ATM Networks and other Community-Based partners in the state.

To commemorate June 12 Democracy Day, the Senator Polycarp Nwite Foundation for Democratic Accountability (SPNFDA) has said that issues threatening the sustainability of democracy in Nigeria, include widespread hunger and insensitivity of the political class in the face of challenging economy, as it urged government to take urgent action to restore public trust in democratic governance.

The foundation named after the late 3rd Republic Senator, Polycarp Nwite, a democracy advocate and former senior Presidential aide, said that democracy ought to inspire hope, rather than despair, as it identified
“Palpable food insecurity,
Insensitivity of the political class and declining faith in political leadership as being responsible for the widespread disillusionment among Nigerian youths – the successor leadership generation – many of whom are now turning their back on the nation in preference for foreign democracies.

A ‘June 12 Democracy Day’ statement on Wednesday June 12, 2024, signed by its Executive Director, Mr. Michael Nwite, emphasized that these factors posed a significant threat to the sustainability of democracy in Nigeria, as they bruise the soul of democracy - the people.

It saluted the courage and selfless sacrifices of Nigeria’s Heroes of Democracy; and also commended the resilience and ingenuity of the Nigerian populace in weathering the current biting economic situation in the nation.

The foundation said it is concerned that “These factors in addition to diverse other economic challenges and the lingering intractable security problem in the country, have become the oxygen fuelling criminality and the current exodus by young Nigerians to foreign lands, in search of better economic and social fortunes, referred to as ‘Japa’ syndrome in local parlance.

“For the survival and sustenance of democracy in the nation, government must take urgent steps to stimulate real productivity, address the current alarming rate of unemployment, criminality and disillusionment among young Nigerians, which it said is fast destroying the fibre and potential of the youth demography and pose a significant threat to the nation’s security, development, and future.”

Mr. Nwite said further, “It’s no longer in doubt that the impact of the challenging economic environment, scarce opportunities, dysfunctional social infrastructure and weak institutions, have continued to erode the faith of the Nigerian youth demography in democracy and turning their backs in droves on the nation.”

He urged government to address these challenges and work towards regaining the trust of Nigerian youths, “who are the future of the country’s democracy.”

The foundation expressed hope in President Bola Tinubu’s ability to take the necessary steps to address these challenges and restore the faith of Nigerian youths in democracy.

It charged “President Tinubu administration to motivate youths for sustainable development in our democracy by offering opportunities for youth participation in governance and decision-making in job and wealth creation, by supporting youth-led initiatives and entrepreneurship, essentially, in agriculture, social and economic driven technology.

“Nigeria with huge resources in arable land and human capital has no business being listed as a nation with food insecurity. All government needs is an intentional policy backed up by sustainable investments in agriculture – including right training in relevant skills in food production, preservation and value chain development.

“Government must also encourage robust civic engagement by creating safe spaces for all citizens to express themselves and engage in civic activities – fostering a culture of inclusivity, diversity and enthronement of an evidence-based political system that is transparent and credible enough to evoke patriotic zeal and belief in our people.

“Leaders at all levels must be honest and intentional about reducing the cost of governance, strategically
redirecting the Nigerian youths towards sustainable development and harnessing their potential for national growth, by implementing policies addressing the root causes of youth disillusionment.”

Senator Nwite was Nigeria's Ambassador to Botswana, a Senior Special Assistant to President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua and a frontline activist of the National Democratic Coalition, NADECO, a broad coalition of Nigerians, formed in May 1994 to fight for the enthronement of civil rule in Nigeria.

BY BONIFACE Okeke

Detectives from the Force Headquarters of the Nigeria Police Force, NPF, Abuja, have nabbed one Mr. Peter Chijioke Okaa, a native of Nnobi, Idemili -South LGA of Anambra state in connection with alleged plot to abduct, and, assassinate a veteran of the United States of America, US, Army, Mr. Bonaventure Ezekwenna who incidentally hails from the same Nnobi town.

Mr. Okaa who is said to be a "self-acclaimed chief priest, and, popularly known as"ikonso", "ezeudo" and "ezemmo" was arrested following a petition to the Inspector -general of police, IGP, by the US army veteran, Mr. Bonaventure Ezekwenna wherein he alleged threat to his life; threat to commit arson in his Nnobi house, instigation of authorities against him, conspiracy to frame him up with false, malicious and trump up allegations at Zone 13 police command, Ukpo on a matter already before the Court, and, intimidation with intent to extort money from him dated 16th November, 2023.

Mr. Ezekwenna in his petition, a copy of which was obtained by this reporter also fingered some officers at the police Zone 13 command, Ukpo, and, Onitsha Correctional Centre, Anambra state as accomplices in the plot to abduct, and, assassinate him.

Reliable sources with the police formation revealed that Mr. Okaa was picked up by officials from Force Criminal Investigation Department, FCID, at his home in Nnobi, and, was first taken to the Nnobi police station, and, from there transferred to the police Zone 13 command, Ukpo, for prosecution by the legal department of the zone.

When contacted, the zone 13 command public relations officer, ZPRO, superintendent of police, SP Josephine Ihunwo simply said "the case is being handled by the Force Headquarters, that is all I can tell you".

Meanwhile, Ezekwenna who in his petition to the IGP, written on his behalf by his lawyer, Mr. J. O. Okakwu of Orator Legal Practitioners narrated that his ordeal started on Sunday, August 20, 2023, when he received two text messages on his mobile phone from unknown person using two different phone numbers.

He stated that the person introduced himself as "assassin", and, that he had been paid the sum of N500,000, to assassinate him. Ezekwenna said that the self-acclaimed assassin had demanded that he should pay him the sum of N250,000 so that he would not execute the contract against him, and, even promised to reveal the person who hired him if he paid him the N250,000. He said that the so-called hired assassin had given him till 12noon of that fateful August 20, 2023 to pay him, warning him that he already knew every details about him, including where he lives, and, his movements.

Ezekwenna narrated further that when he ignored all the threats and entreaties from the purported assassin, the evil-person again issued another threat that he would not only kill him, but, would set his home at Nnobi ablaze, and, also kill all his family members since he has proven to be "stubborn".

Ezekwenna narrated further that he later reported the matter to the Department of State Services,DSS, Awka, Anambra state command who eventually traced his callers to the Onitsha Prisons where Beninoire, Mr. Claude Gounou Aloukou, but, who introduced his name as "Oluwafemi Salako" is being remanded in connection with a case in Chief Magistrate Court, Nnobi, Idemili -South LGA, charge No. MIG/12C/2023 , bothering on giving false information to the Inspector -general of police against Mr. Bonaventure Ezekwenna. Mr. Okaa according Ezekwenna , is also a co-defendant along with Salako in the matter.

Ezekwenna in his petition told the IGP that Salako and officials of the Onitsha Prisons were the only persons who knew him in that prison and that Mr. Okaa had been a regular visitor to the prison because sometime in 2022 police arrested him in connection with the mysterious death of one Azubuike Nwokolo in a hotel whose private parts were allegedly found to be harvested.

Ezekwenna further stated that he was later to receive another threat text message on Saturday September 16, 2023, and, a purported police invitation emanating from police Zone 13 command, Ukpo, issued by O/C ZIB inviting him to the command on allegations bothering on attempted murder, violence and criminal trespass.

He said that the invitation which was extended to him via his WhatsApp platform was addressed to one "Bonaventure Eze Ogbonna", when his real name is "Bonaventure Ezekwenna".

Ezekwenna in his petition on his behalf by his lawyer had reminded the IGP that "there are 2 ongoing cases against Mr. Peter Chijioke Okaa and Mr. Olufemi Salako (aka, Claude Gounou Aloukou) at Chief Magistrate Court, Nnobi with Charge No. MIG/12C/2023 between COP v Chijioke Peter Okaa and Mr. Olufemi Salako, where our client (Mr. Bonaventure Ezekwenna) is the nominal complainant in the criminal case, while he is the plaintiff in the civil case in suit No. HID/108/2023, at the High Court, Oba, Anambra state.

"It is our client's believe that these threats to assassinate him, his family members and false allegations at Zone 13 are all attempts by Mr. Peter Chijioke Okaa and Oluwafemi Salako to intimidate him from his quest for justice in their crimes and violation against his fundamental human rights", the petition read further.

It was authoritatively gathered that the Force Headquarters after a thorough investigation into Mr. Ezekwenna's petition co-ordinated by a Deputy Inspector -general of police during which some officers at the police Zone 13 command Ukpo were interrogated, the Force Headquarters had given stern order to the police Zone 13 command Ukpo, legal department to do a diligent prosecution of the matter to ensure that justice was done.
