Education / “nobody Is Ever Just A Refugee”: Chimamanda by Okpore101(m): 12:36pm On Aug 25, 2016 |
The Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie called on attendees of the United Nation’s World Humanitarian day last week to rethink the refugee crisis. “Nobody is ever just a refugee,” said the novelist and non-fiction writer, delivering the keynote address at the event in New York. “Nobody is ever just a single thing. And yet, in the public discourse today, we often speak of people as a single a thing. Refugee. Immigrant.” Sub-Saharan Africa is home to more than a quarter of the world’s refugee population, about 18 million people fleeing conflict in the Central African Republic, South Sudan, Somalia and other places. Adiche, the author of Americanah and several other books, has a personal connection to migration. Her parents were displaced during the Nigeria-Biafra war and lived as refugees for three years. She called for a new way of talking about those in need: In my language, Igbo, the word for ‘love’ is ‘ifunanya’ and its literal translation is, ‘to see.’ So I would like to suggest today that this is a time for a new narrative, a narrative in which we truly see those about whom we speak. Let us tell a different story. Let us remember that the movement of human beings on earth is not new. Human history is a history of movement and mingling. Let us remember that we are not just bones and flesh. We are emotional beings. We all share a desire to be valued, a desire to matter. Let us remember that dignity is as important as food. |

Crime / Zamfara Mayhem: Update On The Real Situation by Okpore101(m): 7:15pm On Aug 24, 2016 |
Good morning my beloved brethren, I've been in touch with the happenings in Talata Mafara and I want to testify that God will always leave a sign behind (depending on the context) to encourage His people. It was a Muslim student who went to a NIFES brother to ask questions about Christianity that turned the discourse into what happened. That was Sunday night. He was left for dead but a veteran NIFES associate rescued him while another Muslim helped them to the hospital with his car. By Monday, a mob went for the lives of these two lecturers and the hospitalized brother. Thank God that before Monday morning the Christian students had mobilized and left danger zones. In frustration the mob went for everywhere Christians meet on campus. They also went to the residence of the Muslim lecturer who helped but he also had relocated his family. So, they set his house ablaze. Now, here's the twist. Some of the Muslim's entered the lecturer's house to loot without the knowledge of others. So, they got burnt in the building. The burnt bodies are those of those looters. As at this morning there's no indication of any death among the Christians students. The young man with machete cuts is that of the NIFES student. But, he has been relocated to another hospital because they are still searching for him and the two lecturers. Let's continue our prayers for their safety. From E****S**

More reason why I don give beggars a dime. Even if blood is gushing from any part of your body, I don't care. These "so called" NGOs do contract those Physically Challenged Persons and use them to make money, at the end of the day, they will discharge the person with the percentage of the money agreed to give him/her or even the parents. This has been a source of livelihood for some people for a very long time. Just a tip of an Iceberg! 7 Likes |

Pets / No Criminal Implications In Naming Dog After Person — Lawyers by Okpore101(m): 7:18am On Aug 24, 2016 |
By Abdulwahab Abdulah
The incoming Second National Vice President of the Nigeria
Bar Association, NBA, Mr. Monday Ubani, yesterday, said
that no offence is committed by someone naming his dog
after somebody else.
He said: “In the eye of the law, it is not criminal for
somebody to name his or her dog after another person. It
may be offensive by examining the circumstances under
which the incident happened.
“I understand that a particular dog was named after a
neighbour and both of them were not in good terms; in a
Hausa community somewhere in the South-West.
“So expediency would have prevailed on him not to name
his dog after somebody he was quarrelling with.
“The Bible says wisdom profited for direction. Anything you
are doing must be with wisdom. If such a thing would
provoke unnecessary argument, you should avoid it.”
Another Lagos-based lawyer, Mr. Tunji Muyedeen, said: “As
far as I am concerned, there is no way such offence could
be sustained in law. Anybody can name his pet after
anybody’s name.
“He can even call the pet his name. However, spurious
charge or charges may be preferred against such person.
“All of us will be living witnesses to the trial of the man. We
will see what evidence the prosecution has to prosecute the
accused person.”
For human rights activist, Mr. Okey Nwaguna, prosecution
must show that accused had the intent to cause breach of
public peace.
He said: “The motive of an accused is never and can never
be established by the charge: it must be established by
evidence.
“Prosecution must show that accused had the intent to
cause a breach of public peace. What constitutes ‘public’ is
key.” 1 Like |
Agriculture / Walking The Talk To Feed Ourselves -CEO Tiger Foods Ltd. by Okpore101(m): 9:17am On Aug 21, 2016 |
The renowned businessman and Managing Director of tiger foods limited, producers of Tiger foods curry, nutmeg, cubes etc engages in full time Agriculture in his country home, Akokwa in ideato-North LGA, Imo state. He wrote on his facebook timeline: "With 14 labourers we'v managed to plant about 1500 Ehuru trees, three thousand Plantain and three thousand Banana on about 18 acres this year. Next year, we plan to match what we'v been able to achieve this season and also add Uziza Seed farming and other spices. We also have plans for livestock farming which is been delayed by the present economic downturn. We will certainly capitalize on the abundance of Rafter Palm (Ngwó) trees in the swamps of my village to produce liquor. Rain threat didn't allow me to get better pictures. I'v visited many Farms in farming countries like Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Ivory Coast and Morroco to know what we are missing in neglecting farming. If just 10% of the interest Igbo invests in trading is channeled to farming we will have sufficient resources to develops better. Presently 90% of our fertile land is begging for proper attention. As I write this, the MD of Tiger Foods is in the Middle Belt negotiating with their farming communities to grow crops that can be grown down here simply because they have the skills and developed grounds to do this at short notice" More Grace To Him!!!

Crime / Why I Named My Dog Buhari- Trader by Okpore101(m): 8:04am On Aug 18, 2016 |
The Police in Ogun State, yesterday, released unconditionally, the 30-year-old trader, Joe Fortemose Chinakwe, who was arrested last Saturday for naming his pet dog ‘Buhari’. The embattled trader, who was visibly angry after his three-day incarceration in police cell, was let off the hook around 5pm on Tuesday after the intervention of both the Serkin Hausa and President-General of non- indigenes in the state. It was learned that the prompt intervention of the elders made the complainant to withdraw the case he reported against the trader at Sango-Ota division which was later transferred to Police headquarters at Eleweran. However, police sources said both the complainant and suspect were made to sign an undertaking not to cause any breach of peace again. Speaking to Vanguard after this release, the trader, a father of two from the Niger Delta, who trades on second hand clothing lamented that he was made to suffer for no just cause. Complainant from Niger Republic Narrating his ordeal, Chinakwe said “It is annoying because the complainant is from Niger Republic and I am sure he is one of those illegal aliens in this country. He connived with one Police Sergeant from the Northern part of Nigeria called Musa, who works at Sango Police division to humiliate me. Worse still, the Divisional Police Officer there, did not help matters as he refused to entertain any plea from me after I was arrested that Saturday night. He simply ordered his men to throw me into the cell.” Why dog was named Buhari Continuing, he said “I did not commit any offence. I named my beloved pet dog Buhari, who is my hero. My admiration for Buhari started far back when he was a military Head of State. It continued till date that he is a civilian President. After reading his dogged fight against corruption, which is like a canker worm eating into the very existence of this country, I solely decided to rename my beloved dog which I called Buhari, after him. I did not know that I was committing an offence for admiring Buhari. Ordeal with Police “I was intimidated and thrown inside the cell with hardened criminals for about three days. While I was there, the complainant from Niger Republic and Sergeant Musa from the North kept on taunting me saying people from my part of the country are trouble makers and that after detaining me, they will throw me into prison where I will die unsung. ''Even when my wife came with our baby on her back, they stopped her from giving me food. One of my friends that came to see me was also maltreated. “While taking me to Eleweran the next day, they handcuffed and chained me together with that my friend. Fortunately, when we got to police headquarters, both the Commissioner of Police and other officers were angry with their colleagues at Sango-Ota. ''They were wondering loudly why I was brought to the headquarters over such a minor case. It’s very unfortunate that I have to be so humiliated in my own country because of the antics of a foreigner in connivance with my brother from the North.” |

Investment / Oba Of Lagos To Buhari "Stop Acting Like A Military Man" by Okpore101(m): 1:59pm On Aug 16, 2016 |
– Oba of Lagos, Rilwan Akiolu, tells President Buhari to
stop acting as a military man
– Oba Akiolu says Nigeria’s economy woes is not totally
the fault of former president Goodluck Jonathan
– He says he and Jonathan are good friends
Rilwan Akiolu, the Oba of Lagos has advised President
Muhammadu Buhari against approaching governance as a
military man.
According to Oba Akiolu, Buhari should realize that he is no
longer a military man and be civil in his approach, The
Punch reports.
Oba Akiolu made this known in Lagos on Monday, August
15, during the unveiling of SunTrust Bank Limited, the first
commercial bank to be licensed by the Central Bank of
Nigeria in 15 years.
His remark comes even as he noted that former president
Goodluck Jonathan could not be totally blamed for the
nation’s current economic crisis.
However, Oba Akiolu sought support for President Buhari
and expressed confidence in the Federal Government’s
Economic Management Team led by Vice-President Yemi
Osinbajo to salvage the economy.
Akiolu said: “All of us just have to support the President and
I advise him to know that he is no more a military man. I
am not afraid to say that. The measures they are taking on
the rot of the past, honestly whether they like it or not, it
was not totally the fault of former President Goodluck
Jonathan. I don’t hide the fact that he (Jonathan) is my
personal friend. All that happened was not totally his fault
“But it is not too late to make amend. With Prof. Yemi
Osinbajo as head of economic team, with people like Mrs.
Nike Akande as the President of the Lagos Chamber of
Commerce and Industry and others, they (the federal
government) should listen to advice from people in
commercial sector of the economy.”
Other dignitaries present at the unveiling include; the
president of Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote; chairman of
Forte Oil, Femi Otedola; andcChairman, Senate Committee
on Appropriation, Danjuma Goje.
Dangote, who was a special guest of honour at the event,
described as a bold move the decision by the Board of
Directors and management of SunTrust Bank to open a new
bank at a time the global banking industry and major
economies were facing serious challenges.
He said: “These investments of ours are meant to open the
entire economy, not just in Nigeria but the entire Africa. We
also believe that this investment by SunTrust Bank will
attract good rewards in the years to come.
“SunTrust Bank has a good business model that is based on
financial technology, often regarded as FinTech. With their
focus on FinTech, customers can transact business with
them without leaving their homes.”
According to Dangote, the SunTrust Bank’s model will attract
millions into the financial system, noting that only 15% of
the country’s adult population is currently in the banking
system.
While unveiling SunTrust Bank, Dangote said: “This is a very
bold move; ladies and gentlemen, I present to you
tomorrow’s bank today.”
Meanwhile, Oba Akiolu has said that more oil deposits are
still going to be discovered in Lagos state, which will lead to
constructions of more refineries in the state.
According to him, Nigerians have not seen anything in
terms of development, and that a lot of developmental
projects are going to be embarked on during the tenure of
Governor Akinwunmi Ambode.
The monarch said that the refinery being built by the
Dangote Group in Lagos was just the beginning of many
great things to come during his reign. |
