Hey guys, I’m currently in the US on a B1/B2 visa. Is buying a house possible? Since I don’t have a social security number and credit score

Unless you want to pay 100% in cash..otherwise, practically impossible

You need to make more research before you make a definite decision. Florida right now has stringent immigration laws that is driving undocumented folks out of the state.

I have no information about the crime rate in Baltimore, MD. Possibly some other folks living out there can assist in giving you first hand information.

Best of luck.

I have lived in the US for two years before I left, I’m trying to come back now and I already have a visa in my hand (Glory to God). However, I’m divided between settling in Florida and settling in Baltimore MD. But anytime I mentioned the idea of Baltimore, people make it looks like anyone that stepped there is gonna be dead in a jiffy due to high crime rate. I’d really prefer B-more but I’m scared. Is crime that material that it’s almost a guarantee to die by merely landing in Baltimore?

Yes you can.

Its faster its the kid is below 21 and unmarried. Married kids and above 21 falls under the 2B catergory.

You will need to file i-130 with USCIS, note that the average wait time may exceed 2 - 3 years or depending on when your PD becomes current.

More information can be found here

https://www.uscis.gov/family/family-of-green-card-holders-permanent-residents

File by yourself (it's doable) or talk to a lawyer.

Best of luck !

Hi everyone,

My husband and 2 children currently UK citizens but we’re moving to Houston Texas to start afresh. Please does anyone currently live in Texas and can show us the ropes and help us with this massive transition. My husband is a Business Analyst and I’m a pharmacist. How easy would it be for us to secure jobs there? Please bear in mind we’ll be coming in with green cards? Pls I’d really appreciate any advise that’ll help in terms of jobs, childcare, good church community preferably RCCG and of cos where we can get some good and cheap Naija food. Thanks in advance

Hi,

Houston Texas is an ideal place to start life afresh especially as immigrants. The city has a laaarge population of Africans particularly Nigerians so intergrating should not be a problem. In terms of housing, it would depend on if you are looking to buy or rent, for rentage, try look for zip codes with good schools for the kids (this is very important). Read their reviews on google and you may call the schools ahead for more information. Jobs, should not be too much of a hassle since you are coming in with green cards. Scouting around for data analysis/business analysis jobs, there are quite a few out there. Fir your hubby, he may need to re-certify or something like that if he wants to practise in the pharma field. Overall, your choice of Texas is a good one.

I once attended a party in houston that the next building is filled with NIgerian churches, from ground up to the 3rd floor. That tells you that Nigerian churches litters every where. lol

All the best !

Unless you are searching for a serviced apartment, most times, tenants pay their utilities separately. Typical, you may budget an extra 150 bucks for "nepa", water and gas...for internet, you may call any major isp within your choice area to find out their plans for an apartment. Spectrum, ATT, Verizon, Tmobile all have good plans.

Best of luck !

RaniOpe:
Hi everyone.

Please I have a question about utilities, kindly provide inputs.

I currently live in a 4 bedroom apartment (with others), where utilities are included in the rent , it is a school hostel. I have no idea the specific cost of utilities because we pay directly to the institution through a portal.

I intend to move into my own apartment soon and I’ve been hunting, most apartments that I see, have no utilities included in the rent.

People that pay for utilities separately, how much do you spend monthly please? E.g electricity , gas, internet , water
I will like to factor that, before choosing an apartment.

Thank you.

Hi, Welcome to DFW !!! I live within the metroplex as well. For jobs, are you seeking for jobs specific to your field? Or any other field..

I would advise you constantly check the career portals of major engineering coys like texas instruments, salesforce etc. We have quite a few within the metroplex.

You may also register with major recruitment agencies like roberthalf, davron.net and nesc.com ( you can also use google to your advantage)

This land will favor you. Once again, welcome !

DFW metroplex is a vibrant city towards north Texas. Its also multi-cultural, having a large percentage of Hispanics, Indians, Africans especially Nigerians. We hardly have natural disasters like tornadoes et al unlike other cities in US. For the weather, hardly do we experience snows, the winter can be quite chilly, summers are extremely hot.

Jobs, there is quite alot of industries around here, including 24 fortune 500 headquarters. So, if you wanna hustle, you got a place here.

Transportation
Public transport exists in some areas within the city but I would advise anyone that wants to live a life of ease to get a car. DFW is almost as big as Lagos,

Any tornados?
Public transport? Or is it best to get a car

Like someone said, use zillow.com realtor.com to check prices. It will surely range anywhere from $900 to $1700 monthly depending on zip codes and environment.

Got your point !!! getting that first corporate job can be the hardest but never give up, keep applying. Also, you may wanna focus on going through recruitment agencies, they have their ways of taking you through the door. All the best !!!

Yes, I have been using LinkedIn and glassdoor. Not sure it's resume 'cos I get called for the first phase of the interview, the phone interviews . And it's not like I do not have relevant experience. I am suspecting maybe I do not have American experience yet or something. Someone said I should work on my elevation pitch when next I get called

It's really discouraging though, but giving up sha.

Try using job agencies like Robert Half. Have your resume modified towards US template and try linkedin/otta.com/glassdoor etc
molybdenum0012:
Hey guys, how do you get professional jobs here with just Naija experience.., It's tough getting one in my field. I would get plenty of phone interviews but no callbacks. It's frustrating. However I work with one NGO remotely now for just 20 hours per week, which is nothing.
Travel / Re: Living In The USA - Life Of An Immigrant Part 1 by Okunrimeta: 9:05pm On Jan 01
Sure ! I live within the DFW metroplex. Here has alot of African/Nigerians concentration with loads of naija food. Great weather for the most part of the year too. Its all good! I would advise new migrants coming in from naija or UK to see Texas as an option.
Taal17:

Nice
What part of Texas? It's the need to always drive everywhere that I don't really like.

Do you mind sharing about your city.
I'm in NYC
