Nairaland / General / Police Kill Four In Akwa Ibom by oLAAbEfe(m): 9:02am On Dec 26, 2013
Four people were reported killed yesterday
by the police in Eket Local Government Area
of Akwa Ibom.
Following the incidence, about 100 youths
protested the killing and eventually dumped
the bodies of two of the victims in front of
the police station along Eket Oron Road.
An indigene of the area, who pleaded for
anonymity, said that two other person shot
by the police were rushed to the hospital,
but died on the way.
The aggrieved youths disrupted activities in
some parts of Eket. The protest caused
traffic gridlock.
Shops were forced to close as the aggrieved
youths, with cutlasses and other weapons in
their hands, matched to the police station.
However, Akwa Ibom State Police Public
Relation Officer (PPRO), Mr. Etim Dickson,
denied that the victims were killed by the
police.
Dickson said that more security operatives
had been deployed to calm the situation.

Politics / Fish Sells More Than Chicken In Kafanchan by oLAAbEfe(m): 12:30pm On Dec 25, 2013
Chicken sellers in Kafanchan, Kaduna State,
on Tuesday complained of low patronage,
and blamed the development on the
nation’s economic reality. Most people who
wished to celebrate Chritmas reportedly
went for fish.
A cross section of the sellers who spoke to
the News Agency of Nigeria also identified
the delay in payment of workers’ salary as
another contributory factor for the low
sales.
Mr Jimmy Adams, a poultry farmer, said he
was yet to dispose half of his birds, adding
that the lingering economic situation in the
country had affected every business.
According to him, there is also low
patronage from eateries and restaurants,
and that the experience is quite different as
only individuals patronise them.
He told NAN that a broiler was sold for N1,
200 and N2, 000 while turkey went for
between N7, 000 and N14, 000, depending
on the size.
A chicken seller at the Kafanchan market,
Alhaji Yusuf Barde, who also complained of
low patronage, said that the price of a local
bird remained between N800 and N1, 500.
A customer, Mrs Martha Philip, who
described prices of chicken as
“considerate”, however, complained of low
cash flow.
Meanwhile, as the chicken sellers bemoaned
low sales, their counterparts in fish
business described patronage of their
product as “good.”
A fish seller, Mrs Abigail Musa, who declined
to state her sales per day, attributed the
high patronage to “customers desire for a
change’’.
She said, “Fish is a good alternative for
those who cannot afford chicken or beef.”
Malam Abdulkadir Mohammed, a fish seller
near NEPA roundabout, said he recorded
more sales during Christmas as he was
patronised by hoteliers and operators of
relaxation spots.
“A lot of pepper soup sellers buy fresh fish
from us. We sell off all our daily stock,’’ he
said.
He said that cat fish was sold for between
N800 and N1, 500 while tilapia sold for
between N1, 000 and N2, 200, depending
on the size.

Politics / Ogun Fire Truck Kills Woman, Son,grandpa by oLAAbEfe(m): 7:25am On Dec 25, 2013
It was tears at Ijako Owode Road, Sango
Ota area of Ogun State after an emergency
fire service truck belonging to the Ogun
State Government Fire Service swerved off
the road and crushed a trader, Bunmi
Fatoyinbo, her seven-year-old son,
Emmanuel Fatoyinbo and her 76-year-old
father, Pa Moses Sogunro.
The incident, which happened on Friday
afternoon, was said to have thrown
residents into confusion and caused a
gridlock for hours.
An eyewitness, who identified himself as
Baba Vulcaniser, said the crimson-coloured
Mercedez Benz 911 water truck, marked,
Ogun AG 123 A09, was occupied by two
men and a woman.
Our correspondent learnt that it was driven
by one Sokunbo Michael of Ogun State Fire
Service, Ota.
The eyewitness added the driver was on
top speed, before he lost control and
rammed the vehicle into where the victims
were sitting.
He said, “We have all been here together for
the past eight years and Fatoyinbo (Bunmi)
had been the one selling food, recharge
cards to all of us.
“On Friday, around 1pm, I saw the truck
coming on top speed. The brake must have
failed; the driver swerved off the road and
headed straight for where she was sitting.
Her father was on a brief visit and was with
her. The truck crushed Fatoyinbo (Bunmi),
Emmanuel and their grandpa.”
Our correspondent learnt that the fire truck
was still fully loaded with water and was
returning from a fire incident scene when
the tragedy happened.
The first daughter of the deceased woman,
Esther, told our correspondent that the
three victims were rushed to a specialist
hospital, where her mother gave up.
“Before the accident, my mom had sent me
on an errand. I was in the bus when people
started calling me from different places,
saying there had been an accident.
“When I finally got there, my mom had been
rushed to Medicare Hospital in Ado Odo,
Ota. The doctors said they needed blood for
her. Before I knew it, she just stopped
breathing and I was told she had died.”
The first son of Sogunro and a brother to
Bunmi, Oluwatoyin Sogunro, said the
remaining two victims were referred to
another hospital in Lantoro, Abeokuta.
He added that before they could get to the
hospital, they also died, throwing the entire
family into mourning.
When our correspondent visited the Sango
Police Station on Monday, where family
members had gathered to see the
policemen investigating the incident, the
remaining five children of the deceased
were there.
One of them, 10-year-old David, who is in
Primary four, said their mother had
promised to take them to a tailor a day to
the incident.
He said, “My mom told us to prepare to take
our cloths to a tailor for Christmas on
Thursday. Then on Friday, when I was
playing in our neighbour’s house, they
called me. I saw my sister, Esther crying; she
said mummy had died. When they told
daddy that mummy had died, daddy also
fainted and people started to beat his chest
to wake him up. After that time, they told
me that my grandpa and Emmanuel died
too.”
The husband of the deceased, Sunday
Fatoyinbo, said his world had collapsed
because his late wife had been the bread
winner of the family since he lost his job 10
years ago.
The certified Agricultural Science expert
pleaded with the state government to give
him a job, and give scholarship to his
children who now faced a bleak future
without the usual support of their mother.
He said, “Being a Christian, I have taken this
tragedy with a strong mind. Losing three
souls in a day is painful. I have nothing left
again. I lost my job 10 years ago, and it had
been my wife that was supporting the
family and sending the children to school.
“I have handed this matter to God. But I
appeal to the government to give me a job,
and probably give scholarship to my first
and second born, to relieve me of this
burden.”
The Police Public Relations officer for Ogun
State command, Muyiwa Adejobi, confirmed
the incident and said the suspect was in
police custody and would be charged for
manslaughter.
He added that the Fatoyinbo family had told
the police that they were not interested in
pursuing a court case against the driver.
He said, “The family has said they don’t
want any case. However, as police officers,
we would play our role and pursue the
course of the law. It is now left to them to
file an application to the court to indicate
that they were no longer interested.”
The head of the Ogun State Fire Service,
Sango Unit, Mr. Obiwunmi Akanbi, said the
agency had visited the deceased family to
condole with them and would render all
necessary assistance.
“We are with them as we speak because
we heard that mother and son will be
buried soon,” he said.

UMUAHIA—ABIA State Police Command has
recovered the two AK 47 riffles belonging to
two inspectors attached to the command
who were killed two weeks ago by armed
robbers.
The slain inspectors, Jimmy John and
Kingsley, were killed along Enugu-Port
Harcourt expressway when they were
attacked by armed robbers while escorting
a Pool magnet moving money from Aba.
The command also said it recovered one
military riffle in the same bush where the
two Police AK 47 rifles were recovered.
According to the Abia State Police
Commissioner, Mohammed Tilli Abubakar,
the rifles were recovered in a bush at
Umuawa Alaocha Ohuhu in Umuahia.
However, no arrest has so far been made as
he said that the hoodlums who hid the
weapons in the bush fled.
Abubakar also announced that his men
arrested criminals who specialize in
snatching car, especially Toyota Camry
brand.
“Following a tip-off that two men operating
on a motorcycle suspected to be hoodlums
were sighted in a bush at Umuawa Alaocha
Ohuhu in Umuahia, Police operatives were
dispatched to the area.
“Three AK 47 rifles and one Military riffle
concealed in a big bag and buried in the
ground were recovered.
“Examination of the riffles revealed that two
of the AK 47 riffles were those taken from
Inspectors Jimmy John and Kingsley Etuk
shot dead on December 7, 2013, along Aba-
Enugu express road by hoodlums. Efforts
are still intensified to track down the fleeing
hoodlums,” the CP said.

advertising practice in Nigeria.
Fayemi mourns
Meantime, Governor Kayode Fayemi of the
Ekiti State has expressed shock at the killing
of Ogunro who is also the Chairman of the
Board of the Broadcasting Service of Ekiti
State.
Fayemi in a statement by his Chief Press
Secretary, Mr. Olayinka Oyebode, said
Ogunro’s murder had broken the hearts of
the people of the state whom he served
diligently in his lifetime.
The governor said Ogunro was a
thoroughbred Ekiti son, a professional who
identified with his people wherever he
found himself.
He urged all relevant security agencies to
work hard and ensure that the killers of the
BSES boss are brought to justice within the
shortest possible time.
The governor, who has since paid a
condolence visit to the family of the late
Oguro in Lagos, yesterday, said those who
cut down the Ekiti shining star must not be
allowed to get away with the crime.
He said Ogunro had contributed immensely
to the development of Ekiti State in the area
of economic empowerment of Ekiti
indigenes and through useful advice that
assisted in taking the state to greater
heights.
Fayemi wondered why a harmless person
like Ogunro could be killed in cold blood,
saying his administration would do
everything possible to assist security
agencies in bringing his killers to book.
He said: “We are appalled and shocked by
this gruesome murder of an Ekiti shining
light who was a role model to the young
generation.
“He believed in hard work and rose to the
pinnacle of advertising and marketing
communications.
“His sterling qualities inspired our
administration to appoint him as the
chairman of the state broadcasting service
and turned around the fortunes of the
corporation within the short time he held
office.
“This is a monumental loss for the
government and people of Ekiti State and
we urge security agencies to do everything
humanly possible to bring the perpetrators
of this dastardly act to justice.
