Politics / Buhari Warns NASS: Put Your Personal Interests In Your Pocket by olubravo: 6:30pm On Jul 03, 2015
This is not the change we promised Nigerians. President Muhammadu Buhari has told the All Progressives Congress lawmakers in the National Assembly to accept the party’s supremacy in the interest of democracy and the stability of the polity.

In his opening remarks at the ongoing meeting of the National Executive Committee of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Abuja, Buhari charged members to put whatever interest they have in their “pockets” and accept the supremacy of the party in the system.

He said: “What ever your personal interests, put them in your pocket. Let APC work. Let the system work. I appeal to you to accept the superiority of the party. I cannot confine myself in Sambisa forest and refuse to participate in the meeting because I respect the superiority of the party.”

Politics / Gov Aregbesola Pays Osun State Workers Their December Salary by olubravo: 4:42am On Jul 01, 2015
Osun state governor Rauf Aregbesola has approved the payment of the December 2014 salary of the state civil servants. At a press conference in Osogbo, the state capital, the chairman of the state's NLC, Mr. Jacob Adekomi, said Governor Aregbesola approved the payment after a meeting between the state NLC leaders and some officials of the state government.
Mr Adekomi also stated that the Governor has approved the payment of 30% balance of November salaries of some workers who were yet to be paid in full. The NLC boss said the strike action by the state workers will still continue despite the payment of the December salary.

"We appreciate the efforts of the government to see that salary and pension arrears are settled without further delay . Our negation with government is that out of eight months owed us, the minimum we can take is Five months to resume work. As it is now, the strike continues while negotiations also continue. I appeal to all workers in the state to continue to stay at home until further notice. This payment is as good as no payment, because all deductions must have been made by our various banks. Because of this , there won’t be money for us to transport ourselves to work and feed our families. Until we have enough money to feed and for our transportation to work, we will not resume work. The strike continues.”he said

Crime / Woman Abandons 4 Year Old Grandchild Beside A Parked Truck by olubravo: 7:03am On Jun 18, 2015
http://http://bravo9ja..com/

A four-year-old child, who is battling with cerebral palsy has been abandoned at the Ifako-Ijaiye General Hospital, Lagos State.
It was learnt that her unidentified mother had sometime last year left the child with her grandmother, identified as Nike Owoyeni, and fled.
Owoyeni took the victim to the hospital around December, 2014, where she was reportedly treated and discharged the same day.

It was gathered that Owoyeni, after leaving the hospital, headed to Ogba and dumped her granddaughter beside a parked truck. The child was said to have been seen by a resident, who took her back to the facility.

This happened 7 months ago and since then, neither the child’s mother nor the grandmother has shown up since she was admitted.

Efforts to reach Owoyeni, who claimed that she resided in the Alagbado area, proved futile as a phone number she gave the hospital reportedly indicated ‘wrong number.’

The child was seen at the Children Ward of the hospital on Wednesday with a straw through her mouth.

A senior official at the Social Welfare Department of the hospital, who identified herself only as Obilana, said the victim’s condition was very critical when she was brought, adding that the hospital management were doing their best to save her life.
She said,

“She is suffering from cerebral palsy. She should be four or five years old, but looked extremely skinny. Her body was very stiff when she was brought here last year. But we have recorded some improvement. She also had a body odour, which has gone now. She has started looking fresh. We attend to her every day. She is fed through the straw in her mouth.”

A nurse, who spoke to Punch correspondent on condition of anonymity, said the child needed to be given a special treatment.

She said,

“This is the first time a child will be abandoned in this hospital. We have been doing our best for the child, but she needs a special placement, where she can have access to adequate treatment. In this case, the ministry of health needs to intervene.”

The hospital’s Public Relations Officer, Mrs. Adeola Abimbola, said the hospital was making efforts to ensure there was a rapid improvement on the child’s condition. She also enjoined parents not to give up on their wards in the face of health challenges.

She said,
“The first time she was brought here by her grandmother, we treated her and she was discharged on the same day. It was a man that later brought her back from where she was dumped.
“The woman (grandmother) did not specify where she lives in Alagbado and that is why it is difficult for us to locate her. We later discovered that the phone number she gave is fake. We have been doing all we can for the child and we are trying to get her a special placement.
“No matter how serious the ailment may be, dumping a child at a place or abandoning him/her in a hospital should never be an option.”

Science/Technology / Some Angry Youths Of Ekiti State Beat BEDC Officials by olubravo: 12:13pm On Apr 06, 2015
Some youths in Ipole Iloro-Ekiti, Ekiti West Local Government Area of Ekiti State, on Saturday manhandled workers of the Benin Electricity Distribution Company, who came to the area for payment verification and disconnection. The BEDC covers Edo, Ondo, Delta states and some parts of Ekiti State. PUNCH Metro gathered that the exercise was going on smoothly until the BEDC employees disconnected the electricity cable of a defaulting house where a young man, identified as Ade Obele, resided.
The situation was said to have annoyed Obele, who mobilised some youths in the area to disrupt the activities of the workers of the electricity firm.

An eyewitness, who spoke with our correspondent, said the youths were led by a vulcaniser, identified as Baba Eji.

The eyewitness added that as the BEDC officials made to flee the area upon sighting the angry youths, Baba Eji pounced on the leader of the team, Mr. Folorunsho Oderinde, who is the marketing officer, Erijiyan Service Centre, Aramoko-Ekiti Unit.

The eyewitness said, ‘‘Baba Eji was holding a stick which he used to drag Oderinde by the neck. He also ruffled his shirt and slapped him. Many people in the community cheered while the assault lasted. Other officials were also beaten up.

‘’The ladder which they came with to carry out the disconnection was damaged. An alfa (muslim cleric)in the area hailed the harassment of the workers because he said they were fond of disconnecting houses with unsettled bills from power source.’’

PUNCH Metro gathered that the matter was reported at the palace of the Olupole of Ipole Iloro, Oba Babatola Oladele, who condemned the act.

The officials, our correspondent learnt, also reported the matter to the police in the Erijiyan Police Post.

The police were said to have seized the vulcanising machine of Baba Eji and arrested the wife of the alfa when both men fled.

It was further learnt that the police later released the wife of the fleeing alfa and vowed to apprehend all those involved in the attack.

According to a source in the area, a similar incident occurred last month at Oke-Oja and Anaye Street in Aramoko-Ekiti.

Attempts to speak with Oderinde were abortive as his number was not reachable.

When contacted, the Divisional Police Officer, Aramoko Police Station overseeing Erijiyan Police Post, Mr. Olusegun Atanda, confirmed the incident.

He stated that the matter had been brought to his attention when our correspondent spoke with him on the telephone.

Science/Technology / Wow!!! Fast And Furious Breaks Record With $143.6 Million by olubravo: 11:57am On Apr 06, 2015
Furious 7″ is currently at the top of the domestic box office, with a massive $143.6 million the weekend it debuted.

This is way higher than the $95 million debut of “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” and is currently the highest-grossing kick-off for any film in the “Fast and Furious” franchise. It also ranks ninth among the top ten openings in history.
One can attribute its success to the death of Paul Walker who died in 2013 at the age of 40 in a car crash while working on the film. His role was completed using digital technology and a series of stand-ins.
“This is a bittersweet installment in the franchise,” said Phil Contrino, vice president and chief analyst at BoxOffice.com. “Walker’s passing made this movie more intriguing for people who hadn’t seen some of the installments. It raised awareness and its success is a tribute to him.”

Universal Pictures spared no expense in bringing the latest chapter in the fast cars and gravity-defying-stunts series to the big screen, shelling out $190 million on the production. It unspooled in 4,003 North American theaters, earning $14 million on 365 Imax screens and $11.5 million from premium large format screens. Going into the weekend, most analysts estimated that the film would open in the $115 million range.
Foreign numbers were steroidal. Internationally, the film rolled out across 10,500 screens in 63 territories, earning $240.4 million.
“This is the next member of the billion dollar club and that’s a rarefied place to be,” said Contrino. “This thing is on fire.”

Politics / Gov. Fayose Responds To Impeachment; Tells Ekiti APC Lawmakers To Stop Acting Li by olubravo: 3:34pm On Apr 04, 2015
Ekiti state governor, Ayo Fayose responds to impeachment threat from APC members in the State House of Assembly. His statement below...

Ekiti State Governor, Mr Ayodele Fayose has advised All Progressives Congress (APC) members in the State House of Assembly to stop acting like jesters, saying; "The script being acted by the APC is a failed one because no one, no matter how highly placed will be allowed to test the will of Ekiti people."

The governor, who described the purported impeachment notice posted online by the APC lawmakers as "joke of the century" said; "The Speaker of the Ekiti State House of Assembly is Hon Dele Olugbemi and not Dr Adewale Omirin."

In a statement issued on Saturday by the his Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media, Lere Olayinka, Governor Fayose said; "Omirin is already in court, challenging his impeachment and common sense dictates that when you are challenging an action already taken in court, you have accepted the consequences of such action pending the determination of the suit you filed."

He said the APC lawmakers should stop advertising their ignorance and crudity in the market place by posting impeachment notice online.

"Since last year November, these so-called lawmakers abdicated their duties and ran to Lagos only for them to resurfaced on Wednesday, but they hurriedly ran away again.

"Now they are posting notice of impeachment signed on March 9, 2015 and Ekiti people are asking; was the motion for impeachment moved and adopted in Lagos or Osun State House of Assembly?

"Is impeachment of a governor done along Lagos-Ibadan Expressway inside a moving bus?

"Rather than going about advertising their ignorance and crudity, the APC lawmakers should wait for the court to adjudicate on the case they filed because even the President-Elect, Major General Mohammadu Buhari (rtd) will respect the rule of law when he assumes office," the governor said.

Crime / Susected Robber: I'm Glad The Police Arrested Me by olubravo: 3:21pm On Apr 04, 2015
Thirty-two-year-old Francis Okonkwo was sobbing as he narrated how he escaped death and landed in police custody.

“I am happy that at least, the police arrested me; if not because of the police, I would be dead by now. The residents of the place I went to rob would have cut me into pieces,” he told our correspondent.

Narrating how he took part in a robbery operation that nearly cost him his life, Okonkwo explained that he would have stuck to picking pocket which was safer.

“I made up to N10,000 sometimes, when I was a pick-pocket at the Seme Border at Badagry,” he said remorsefully. “But I needed a lump sum of money to set up my electronics repair workshop. So, I decided to take part in this robbery operation.

On March 24, 2015, an old acquaintance of Okonkwo’s, a young man he identified simply as Uche, told him to come to Sagamu.

“I knew Uche about four years ago, when we were working at the Seme Border. At the time, I was doing odd jobs while also making money as a pick-pocket.

“Uche left Seme around 2012 and I did not know what he was doing while away. But in February, he came to Seme to buy some clothes and he told me that I should come and visit him in Sagamu.
The day I went to see him on March 24, he told me of a plan to rob a company along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. That was the only details he gave me.

“By evening, I followed him to a bush around NASFAT and we hid there. He made a call and three other men joined us. I had not seen them before. Uche opened a leather bag he was carrying and brought out a locally made shotgun and pistol. He held on to one and gave the other to one of the other men. All I held was a machete.”

Saturday Punch learnt that around 2am, the five men proceeded to Olowotedo area where they robbed residents. He told our correspondent that one of the gang members raped a woman in one of the houses they robbed.

“The woman was with her husband. But he raped the woman there. I did not take part and neither did the others,

But residents of Olowotedo had notified one another, it was learnt. Soon, they had all gathered outside shouting ‘Thief! Thief!’

Okonkwo said when he peeped out of the window of the third house they were robbing, he realised that there was no way for them to escape.

“We went to the roof of the next house, still no way to escape for me. Three of our members, including Uche were lucky. I did not know when they escaped.

“Not long after that, the residents caught me and another member of our gang called Igwe. They beat us mercilessly and I thought they were going to kill us. They used the machete I was holding to flog and inflict cuts all over our bodies.”

Igwe was said to have died from the injuries inflicted on him. Different parts of Okonkwo’s body were dripping with pus when our correspondent spoke with him. The police had previously taken him to hospital for treatment but his injuries are extensive.

“I pray I see my son again. The first thing I would tell him is never to indulge in crime,” he said.

The Police Public Relations Officer of the Ogun State Command, Mr. Muyiwa Adejobi, said investigation was still ongoing as the police were working to track down other members of the gang.

Romance / What Makes My Marriage Sweet: Mercy Johnson Opens by olubravo: 10:24pm On Apr 03, 2015
These days where Muslim men are still marrying as much as four wives, Christian ladies should respect and honour Christian men who choose to be with only one woman. Even in the Bible, most men have much more than one wife, yet Christians of today are trying to turn things upside down.
Things are so bad these days that Christian ladies now see themselves equal with men and many don't even see reason to accord their man any special respect. No wonder Christian marriages are collapsing.

It's only the few ladies who understand that a man who has decided to be with just one woman has made a lot of sacrifice that will enjoying their marriage for as long as possible.

Actress Mercy Johnson has discovered this truth and she is doing the needful. Her words below:

There is a notion that actresses do not make good wives. What is making your marriage work?
Well, I can only speak from my own perspective and when I say my perspective, I mean from my personal experiences, marriage and relationship with my husband. One of the biggest lies anyone can tell himself/herself is using one or more random experiences to judge and stereotype others. We all have our different stories to tell.

I have two children for my husband today and he has not stopped talking about how down-to-earth I was yet I am an actress; not just any actresses. I had a large following at that time yet I did not go around pouting my lips or playing the snub. My husband later confessed to me that for him, it was love at first sight but that did not stop him from asking me to cook for him the first day I set foot in his house.

At first, I was stunned that a Nigerian man was asking me to enter his kitchen to cook him a meal. A part of me whispered to me that perhaps, he was not aware of who I was and when I said to him: ‘You must be joking. My name is Mercy Johnson’. What shocked me even more was his response when he said: ‘I know’. Rather than take offence, I was drawn closer to him.

We have been married since 2011 and we love each other to bits till date and have consciously decided to spend the rest of our lives together. As I said earlier, I am an actress who is correcting the rigid stand that actresses cannot have happy homes when they get married. Also, bear in mind that there are several Nigerian actresses like me who are happily married. Having a happy marriage is a choice a woman has to make. When you decide to have a happy marriage, you focus your thoughts, actions, words, work and everything else around protecting that happiness.

On the high divorce rate among celebrities, Mercy Johnson said:
In marriage, you must have trust and you must also have love. The moment you lose these two, then it is just a matter of time before you embark on a calamitous countdown towards the end of your marriage. My relationship with my husband has been very special. He is not just my husband or father of my children. He is my friend.

She also spoke about the secrets to the stability of her marriage;
I don’t even have to think about it. It is honesty. I remember the words of my pastor to me even before we got married. He advised me never to have a marriage built on lies and I listened. I don’t lie to my husband.
- Ladies, those of you who are not too arrogant, hear what this wise lady is saying for your own good.
