Sports / Former Burundi President Jails Coach For Beating Him At Football! by oluwaseyi02(m): 12:49pm On Sep 22, 2021
Two Burundi officials were imprisoned after the African country's president was allegedly "roughed up" in a football match they organized.

The Former and Lt. President Pierre Nkurunziza was a 'born-again' evangelical Christian who spends much of his time travelling Burundi with his own team, Haleluya FC. He travels with his own choir, "Komeza gusenga", which means "pray non-stop" in the local Kirundi language.

On 3 February, 2018 his team faced a side from the northern town of Kiremba.

Normally, the opposition is well aware they are playing against the country's president, and it has been said they go easy in the games, even perhaps allowing Nkurunziza to score.

But as the Kiremba team contained Congolese refugees who did not know they were playing against Burundi's president, they "attacked each time he had the ball and made him fall several times", a witness told AFP.

Kiremba's administrator Cyriaque Nkezabahizi and his assistant, Michel Mutama, were imprisoned the news agency reports.

AFP cited a judicial source as saying they had been arrested on charges of "conspiracy against the president".

President Nkurunziza and his government were in 2017 implicated in a United Nations report that said there was strong evidence crimes against humanity had been committed in the country.

The report said government forces - but also opposition groups - had committed killings, torture and rape after violence erupted in 2015.

The turmoil was sparked after the Former and Lt. President Nkurunziza decided to run for a third term.

He was later re-elected in a poll that was boycotted by the opposition.

Sports / Balotelli Celebrates Last-gasp Goal By Taunting Besiktas Manager Yalcin by oluwaseyi02(m): 9:36am On Sep 22, 2021
Mario Balotelli taunted Sergen Yalcin after scoring in Adana Demirspor's 3-3 draw Besiktas on Tuesday night.

The forward made a reference to a comment which Yalcin made back in 2013 after watching Balotelli play for Manchester City in a pre-season match against LA Galaxy.

The manager - who was working as a pundit at the time - said Balotelli had 'no brain' after he infamously tried to backheel a easy shot on goal and missed.

Yalcin also said that he would have 'fired' the forward if he was in 'manager Roberto Mancini's shoes' at the time.

Yalcin's comment obviously cut deep with Balotelli - who took the opportunity to get his revenge after scoring a 79th-minute goal to help his side secure a point against Besiktas.

Balotelli's celebration saw him run toward Yalcin and point at his head to reference the manager's previous comment about him having 'no brain'.

Balotelli - who was clearly proud of his celebration - posted a video clip of the incident on Instagram.

He also shared wrote the following comment on his Instagram story: 'We have brain and especially we have balls and heart. Very big heart and we are proud of it.'

However, Adana Demirspor's president Murat Sancak was less impressed and said that both parties were in the wrong for their behaviour.

'I wish it didn't happen,' Sancak said. 'Both Sergen Yalcin's comments at first and then what Balotelli did were not right.'

Yalcin also shared his thoughts on Balotelli's gesture by saying the forward only did performed the celebration as he was disappointed he didn't join Besiktas last year.

'It is the first time that I've seen a player doing such a thing to a manager,' Yalcin said. 'I could not understand why he did that, maybe the reason is that he did not join Besiktas last year. That shows his personality.'

Nevertheless, fans found the whole situation comical and took to social media to comment on the gesture.

Saheed Adebayo Akinfenwa (born 10 May 1982) is an English professional footballer who plays as a striker for League One club Wycombe Wanderers.

Akinfenwa's professional breakthrough came at Doncaster Rovers, having spent time up until then in the lower leagues of English football as well as spells in Lithuania and Wales. Following a short but successful time at Doncaster, Akinfenwa moved to his seventh club, Torquay United. He proved to be a goal threat, but left the struggling team the following season to join Swansea City. After spending two seasons with the Welsh club, he joined League One side Millwall and later moved to Northampton Town. Akinfenwa spent six years switching from Northampton to Gillingham, where his goal-scoring ability was still apparent. In June 2014, he signed for League Two side AFC Wimbledon, and two years later Wycombe Wanderers.

Akinfenwa was born in Islington, North London and is of Nigerian descent. His father is a Muslim and his mother is a Christian, and while Akinfenwa observed Ramadan as a child, he is now a Christian. Chelsea academy product Oluwafikayomi Tomori has not forgotten his roots even though he is cap-tied to England, where he grew up.

The central defender was born in Calgary, Alberta to Nigerian parents, making him eligible to represent the three-time African champions and Canada prior to his competitive debut for the Three Lions in a European Championship qualifier against Kosovo in November 2019.

Around two months before his senior debut for England, Nigeria Football Federation boss Amaju Pinnik monitored Tomori from the stands as Chelsea were held to a 2-2 draw by Sheffield United in a Premier League clash at Stamford Bridge a league game versus Sheffield United.

Sports / How Liverpool’s’ Sadio Mane Can Make Premier League History Vs Crystal Palace by oluwaseyi02(m): 3:45pm On Sep 17, 2021
Sadio Mane has a chance to make Premier League history when Liverpool face off with Crystal Palace on Saturday, September 18th.

Liverpool, as a squad, had a pretty poor 2020/21 season overall.

This, of course, was partly due to the serious injury woes suffered amid the Covid-19-hit campaign.

But even without such struggles, a number of Liverpool’s stars underperformed considerably across the season.

One such player was Sadio Mane, who, despite hitting 11 goals and eight assists in the league, endured a pretty poor campaign by his standards.

And Mane is seemingly aware of this himself, having undergone tests back in May, to ensure that nothing was physically wrong with him.

Such struggles have carried on into the current campaign and were evident against Leeds last weekend.

Granted, Mane did end up scoring Liverpool’s third of the day, but the winger fluffed countless top chances before eventually putting one away.

However, Mane will be hopeful his fortune changes this weekend vs Crystal Palace.

Liverpool will play host to the Eagles in a 3 pm tie on Saturday, September 18th.

Ahead of the game, it has been revealed that Mane can make Premier League history vs Palace.

As per the Liverpool Echo, Mane has scored in each of his last eight outings against Palace, a run which began at the start of the 2017/18 season.

Should he net against them once again this week, Mane will become the first player in Premier League history to score in nine consecutive matches against a single opponent.

Sports / Reece James's Champions League And Euro 2020 Medals Stolen In Burglary by oluwaseyi02(m): 8:02pm On Sep 16, 2021
No arrests have yet been made following Chelsea defender Reece James' allegations of burglary of his Champions League winners' medal, Surrey Police have confirmed; the 21-year-old claims the incident took place while playing in the Champions League on Tuesday.

The England defender has published footage on Instagram of four "cowardly robbers" he says broke into his house while he was playing for Chelsea in the Champions League on Tuesday night.

James says there are "firm leads" on the individuals who managed to lift a safe full of his accolades that also included a European Super Cup winners' medal and his Euro 2020 runners-up medal.

Surrey Police said on Thursday: "Officers were called to a residential address in Four Acres, Cobham yesterday morning (September 15) following reports of a burglary.

"The offence is believed to have occurred sometime between Tuesday evening and the early hours of yesterday morning.

"This investigation remains ongoing and is in the early stages. No arrests have been made yet."

James posted footage from CCTV cameras of four people in grey tracksuits searching the outside of a premises before appearing to smash one of the windows and enter.

Appealing for help in identifying the culprits, the 21-year-old said: "These medals were won representing Chelsea and England - honours that can never be taken away from me whether or not I have the physical medals to prove it.

"Nevertheless, I am appealing to all my Chelsea and England fans to help identify and turn in these low life individuals who will never be able to rest easy as the evidence is mounting against them."

James, who was making his fourth appearance of the new season in the 1-0 group-stage win over Zenit St Petersburg at Stamford Bridge, also confirmed nobody was present inside his house at the time of the burglary and everyone is fine.

Sports / Guardiola Says Man City Not UCL Failures Despite Last Season's Final Defeat by oluwaseyi02(m): 3:52pm On Sep 14, 2021
Pep Guardiola says Manchester City are not Champions League failures and described last season's performance as an "incredible achievement".

Guardiola's side have not won the competition and were beaten 1-0 by Chelsea in the 2020/21 final.

City get their new campaign underway on Wednesday evening when they welcome RB Leipzig to the Etihad, and Guardiola insists it is wrong to look back on the previous season as a failure.

"People can say Man City was a failure but it was an incredible achievement last season, playing really well in many of the games and losing well against a big contender," the City boss said.

"Every time I start this competition with drive. I'm incredibly happy here. Man City made a step forward last season, we improved a lot. We had 13 games and we won 11.

"We played incredibly well in Porto (in the group stage) when we drew and deserved to win. We lost the final.

"Now we start a new one and
every team wants to win. We're going to try but I won't tell you which team is going to win because I don't know it."

Guardiola added he has learned to live with a perception that he needs to win the Champions League to be judged a success with City.

"I accept it. Every year is the same," he said.

"If I win the Champions League I will be happy for the club. If I'm not able to do it, I'm not able.

"After, you can judge the success of my period."

Rodri insists City have no regrets over last season's final defeat and is determined to go one better this term.

"We had a great season," the Spain midfielder said. "We were proud of what we achieved. It was the first time in our history we reached the final.

"We have no regrets. We will learn from this experience.

"The Champions League is decided by little differences. We have to build another building - a huge building - this season to achieve the Champions League."

The expectation on City to win the Champions League has grown each year but Rodri does not feel extra pressure to deliver.

He said: "We don't have to. It's a dream for all of us but it's not compulsory.

"The Champions League is such an unbelievable tournament where only one wins."

Guardiola has again denied saying he plans on leaving Manchester City when his current contract expires in 2023.

Speaking at an XP Investimentos event last month, Guardiola suggested he would need a rest after seven years in charge and revealed his next ambition is to manage a national team.

The 50-year-old Spaniard, who has won three Premier League titles since joining City in 2016, was quoted as saying in August: "After seven years on this team, I think I'm going to have a stop. I'm going to have to take a break, see what we've done.

"And in the process, I would like to coach a South American (team), European, playing a Copa America, I want to have that experience."

However, when asked about those quotes and his potential plan to leave the club at the end of next season, the City boss replied on Tuesday: "Did I say I'm going to leave next season? I didn't say that.

Sports / Kaka: Romelu Lukaku Is The No 1 Striker In The World by oluwaseyi02(m): 3:41pm On Sep 14, 2021
Romelu Lukaku is the No 1 striker in the world and is similar in style to former Inter Milan striker Adriano, according to ex-Brazil playmaker Kaka.
The Belgium striker scored 24 goals for Inter last season to lead them to their first Serie A title in 11 years, finishing 12 points above city rivals and Kaka's former side AC Milan.

The 28-year-old then netted four goals at Euro 2020 as his country reached the quarter-final, before earning a £98million move to Chelsea in August.

He has scored three goals for the European champions already this term, and former AC Milan star Kaka believes the Belgian has similar characteristics to his former international team-mate.

'Romelu is number one, he reminds me of Adriano at his best – physical strength, intelligence, speed,' Kaka told Italian publication Gazzetta dello Sport via sempreinter.com.

'A year ago Milan took the lead [in the title race] after the first derby, then Inter took it back and won deservedly.'

Former Brazil striker Adriano scored 67 goals across two spells at San Siro for Inter, while also netting 27 goals in 48 appearances for Brazil between the turn of the century and 2010.

The 39-year-old also enjoyed fine goalscoring spells at Parma, Sao Paulo and in two of his three stints at Flamengo.

Kaka also believes AC Milan have the perfect opportunity to win the Scudetto for themselves this season after finishing as runners-up in 2020-21.

They have not won Serie A since the 2010-11 season, but the former Real Madrid star insists the departures of Lukaku and Cristiano Ronaldo to Manchester United, in addition to Oliver Giroud's arrival from Chelsea to complement Zlatan Ibrahimovic, could swing the pendulum in their favour.

'I think it could be the right time for Milan,' Kaka added.

'They have continuity, while the others have each lost something – Juventus no longer have Ronaldo, Inter will have to spread goals out in the team without Lukaku.

Pioli gave up on Ibra for a long time [last season]. 'Conte always had Lukaku available to him.

'Today Ibra is still there and [Olivier] Giroud has joined, I think and I hope that we can go all the way.

Sports / Ex-chelsea Star Ba Retires From Football by oluwaseyi02(m): 7:59am On Sep 14, 2021
Former Chelsea and Senegal striker Demba Ba has announced his retirement from football.

Ba took to social media on Monday to make his decision public, almost a month after he left Swiss Super League club Lugano.

He joined Lugano on a free transfer in June and he only played 47 minutes of league football before he terminated his contract, reportedly because of a change of ownership.

Ba, born in France to Senegalese parents, started his career at French club Rouen and he enjoyed a nomadic playing career across Belgium, Germany, England, Turkey, China and Switzerland.

During his club career, the 36-year-old won the Uefa Europa League with Chelsea in the 2012-13 season and he clinched the Turkish Super Lig title twice with Besiktas and Istanbul Basaksehir in the 2016-17 and 2019-20 season,s respectively.

On the international stage, he played for Senegal between 2007 and 2015 with four goals to his name in 22 matches.

“It is with a heart filled with gratefulness that I announce the end of my playing career. What a wonderful journey it has been,” Ba wrote on Twitter.

“Beside all the sweat and tears I have faced, football has given me so many beautiful emotions.

"From the passion of the fans and the noise coming from the stands after every goal to the connection with my teammates on and off the field , this will forever remain in my head and heart.

"I want to thank everyone I've crossed paths with and helped me grow, every club and manager for given me an opportunity, the fans for their tremendous support and my family and friends for unconditional love.

“From the bottom of my heart, thank you. Praise be to the almighty."

Ba's longest playing stint was at Hoffenheim where he scored 37 goals in 97 Bundesliga matches before switching to England to join West Ham United in January 2011 but he left the Hammers six months later following their relegation to the Championship.

Newcastle United moved for him instantly and he made himself a key player at the club with his goalscoring abilities as he grabbed 29 goals in 54 Premier League games within one-and-a-half seasons.

In January 2013, Ba joined Roberto Di Matteo’s Chelsea where he scored 14 goals before switching to Besiktas in June 2014

Sports / Solskjaer Thinks Man Utd Are Better Equipped For Champions League Bid by oluwaseyi02(m): 5:53am On Sep 14, 2021
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer believes his “special” group are better equipped to challenge for Champions League glory this season as Manchester United prepare to kick off their continental campaign in Switzerland.

Having fallen to an agonising penalty shoot-out defeat to Villarreal in May’s Europa League final, the Red Devils return to European action against Young Boys at the Wankdorf Stadion on Tuesday evening.

United are looking to improve on last term’s Champions League showing, having dropped into European football’s second-tier competition after finishing third in their group behind Paris St Germain and RB Leipzig.

They return to the continent’s top table as a more experienced, quality side, thanks in no small part to the summer acquisitions of Jadon Sancho, Raphael Varane and Cristiano Ronaldo.

“We have had some very, very good nights and some memorable historic nights at the club,” United boss Solskjaer, whose goal sealed the treble in 1999, said in Bern. “They’re the biggest nights for the club.

“So, for me, the aim when we go into this tournament now is of course to go all the way but we know it’s going to be a difficult one. It always is.

“But we’ve added some experience, some quality, some youth in the squad and hopefully we are better prepared this year for what’s to come.”

United are favourites to progress from a group including Europa League final foes Villarreal, Atalanta and Young Boys, where Ronaldo is set to enter the history books on Tuesday.

The 36-year-old is in line to make his 177th appearance in the Champions League, group stage to final, putting him level with former Real Madrid team-mate Iker Casillas.

Ronaldo has won the competition five times across those many matches, including the 2008 edition with United, and can play a key role in helping them challenge for European glory again.

“We have had enough disappointments, that’s for sure,” said Solskjaer, who is looking to lead United to their first trophy since the 2017 Europa League.

“We had some big moments but this team now has grown and matured over the last few seasons, I have to say. That was always the plan that back in the day when I came in that we have a squad where we can look around with the experience and quality to challenge.

“With players like David (De Gea), Harry (Maguire) had a couple of years here now, we’re getting the spine in the team and you can see with experience and quality.

“Of course with Raphael and Cristiano coming in, they add not that last bit because you can never say if it’s the last bit. But they added something extra that you have to buy unless you win it four times yourself.

“We’ve learnt, we’ve definitely learnt. The group is special, I have to say, as a unit they look after each other. The atmosphere is really good and that’s going to stand us in good stead, definitely.”

Solskjaer laughed off back-up goalkeeper Lee Grant’s comments about players skipping dessert due to Ronaldo’s arrival, but the superstar’s return has certainly made an impact.

Among the knock-on effects could be persuading Paul Pogba that his future should be at Old Trafford, with his contract expiring at the end of the season.

“Yeah, well, it’s up to us now to get results and to prove to ourselves that we can win trophies,” Solskjaer said when asked about the France midfielder.

“I think everyone who signs for Manchester United wants to win trophies, wants to be a part of a winning Manchester United. That’s the most magical feeling in the world to be part of a winning Man United team.

“I think everyone’s just focusing on doing their best and let’s see where we go.”

Pogba and Ronaldo are among United’s 22-strong squad for the Group F opener in Switzerland, where veteran striker Edinson Cavani is absent through injury.

“Edi is hopefully back with us soon,” Solskjaer added.

“He had a slight strain during the international week after the in-house game we played. He’s working hard to get back.”

Sports / ‘Absolute Honour To Lead The Boys Out’ - Troost-ekong Elated To Captain Watford by oluwaseyi02(m): 5:40pm On Sep 13, 2021
The 28-year-old Super Eagle was handed the armband as the Hornets suffered a second straight defeat in the top-flight

Nigeria international William Troost-Ekong has revealed his delight at captaining Watford during their Premier League match against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday.

The 28-year-old defender, who also captains the Super Eagles, was handed the armband by Watford manager Xisco Munoz as the team suffered a 2-0 defeat at Vicarage Road.

It was the away team, who played a more improved game in the second half and managed to secure maximum points courtesy of an own goal from Francisco Sierralata in the 74th minute and Hwang Hee-chan in the 83rd minute.

— William Troost-Ekong (@WTroostEkong) September 13, 2021
“Absolute honour to lead the boys out for the first time over the weekend,” Troost-Ekong wrote on his social media pages. “Will always do my best for the team.”

The defeat against Wolves was the second in a row for Watford after they had lost 1-0 to Tottenham Hotspur.

Apart from Troost-Ekong, Nigerian players Oghenekaro Etebo, Emmanuel Dennis and Senegal's Ismaila Sarr also featured in the game.

In an earlier post, Troost-Ekong revealed how frustrated the team was after losing at home.

Frustrating result to say the least. Thanks to all the fans at the Vic for the continuous support. We will keep working and improving. #COYH pic.twitter.com/jbnbl77mwl

— William Troost-Ekong (@WTroostEkong) September 12, 2021

“Frustrating result to say the least. Thanks to all the fans at the Vic for the continuous support. We will keep working and improving.”

Meanwhile, Hornets manager Munoz remained confident his squad is steadily improving despite the defeat.

“I spoke before, we need to give the balance,” Munoz told the club’s official website. “We need to try and stay together when we are in defence. We need to improve with the ball, timing, and space.

“It’s important to also have a good relationship with the players because we have some players who are new. They haven’t had a lot of time to create the same connection.

“I believe in them, I trust them with my ideas. I’m sure soon we will start to show things on the pitch. We have new players, and it is important we give everyone the same direction. The players are working very hard every day.”

Watford will return to action on September 18 with an away game against Norwich City at Carrow Road.

Mourinho feels like a kid again after dramatic Roma win in 1000th career match.

Stephan El Shaarawy scored a dramatic winner as the Portuguese boss celebrated the milestone with a victory

Jose Mourinho said he feels like he's 14 again after Roma defeated Sassuolo 2-1 in the legendary manager's 1000th career game.

Roma's win on Sunday saw Mourinho take his career tally to 638 victories, having drawn 205 and lost 157 of his 1000 games as a manager.

Stephan El Shaarawy scored a dramatic stoppage-time winner in the 92nd minute at Stadio Olimpico to ensure Mourinho was victorious on his landmark outing.

Speaking to DAZN after the match, Mourinho said: “During the week I was a liar, saying it wasn’t a special match. But it was a special match.

"It was a match with a special number for me and I always wanted to remember a match like this for my 1000th game. I lied to everyone!

“It could have ended 6 to 6, 7 to 7, (Roma goalkeeper) Rui Patricio came up with two miracles, we missed a few goals. Extraordinary game, a tremendous emotion.

"Today I am not 58, but 14, when you start dreaming of a career in football. It was a child’s race, I apologized to [Sassuolo head coach Alessio] Dionisi, they played a fantastic game.”

The 58-year-old began his coaching career in his native Portugal when he briefly took charge of Benfica in 2000, winning six of 11 matches.

Mourinho would also coach Uniao de Leiria before he made his name at Porto, where he won the Champions League and earned the top job at Chelsea.

He would coach the Blues for three seasons before he moved on to Inter, winning the treble in 2009-10 with the Nerazzurri.

From there, Mourinho took over at Real Madrid and then returned to Chelsea in 2013. He would stay in England for his next two jobs, coaching at Manchester United and then at Tottenham.

After he was sacked by Spurs last season, Mourinho returned to Italy and took over at Roma prior to the current campaign.

Mourinho has managed an encouraging start to life back in Italy, winning all of his first five games with Roma in all competitions.

With three wins from three Serie A matches, Roma sit top of the table, level on points with Napoli and AC Milan.

Sports / Lukaku Says He Won't Slide On His Knees To Celebrate Goals Anymore by oluwaseyi02(m): 9:42am On Sep 13, 2021
The Belgian bagged a brace to continue his superb start to the season, but suffered a pratfall in his attempts to commemorate the moment

Romelu Lukaku has vowed to retire his knee-slide celebration after the Chelsea striker took an ungracious tumble during the Blues' victory over Aston Villa on Saturday.

The Belgian bagged a brace to continue his superb start to his second life at Stamford Bridge, keeping Thomas Tuchel's side firmly in the mix near the Premier League summit.

But the striker's attempt to commemorate his first goal was scuppered when his attempted knee slide fell short, leaving him in a comical heap - and the forward has now stated he will not repeat the feat.

Lukaku took to social media following the match - which saw Chelsea move joint-top of the table to keep their fine form flying across the opening weeks of the season - to issue words on his accident.

"No more sliding on my knees after yesterday’s celebration..." the 28-year-old wrote on Twitter, the morning after the game.

No more sliding on my knees after yesterday’s celebration…

— R.Lukaku Bolingoli9 (@RomeluLukaku9) September 12, 2021
Though he provided no further elaboration, the Belgian's words could be interpreted as a tongue-in-cheek rebuke to his own pratfall, which fortunately came at no expense to both him and his team.

First goal at Stamford Bridge, love this. pic.twitter.com/FgfJZ3NKBB

— Chelsea FC (@ChelseaFC) September 11, 2021

Lukaku follows in Hazard's footsteps
While it remains to be seen whether the attacker will stick to his own vow, he is not the first Chelsea player to claim he will no longer celebrate with the knee slide.

In 2018, then-Blues attacker Eden Hazard confirmed that he would retire his celebration - a trademark of his time at Stamford Bridge - as it had become too painful for him to replicate.

On that occasion, the player delivered an actual message through club channels, complete with scabbed knees, to show why he was stepping back from the move.

There will be no more knee slides from @HazardEden10... pic.twitter.com/WclFdINcak

— Chelsea FC (@ChelseaFC) October 4, 2018

As long as Lukaku's decision to stop the knee slide does not affect his goalscoring form, Thomas Tuchel and the rest of Chelsea are unlikely to care.

The Belgian's homecoming to Stamford Bridge has already far eclipsed a first spell marked more by loan moves elsewhere than success for the Blues.

Next up, Lukaku is expected to be at the forefront of the club's Champions League title defence, which gets underway against Zenit on Tuesday.

Sports / Emma Raducanu: US Open Champion 'Outstanding' - Queen Elizabeth by oluwaseyi02(m): 10:09pm On Sep 12, 2021
Raducanu beat fellow teenager Leylah Fernandez 6-4 6-3 to end Britain's 44-year wait for a women's Grand Slam singles champion.

"I send my congratulations to you on your success," the Queen said.
"It is a remarkable achievement at such a young age, and is testament to your hard work and dedication."

In a statement, the monarch added: "I have no doubt your outstanding performance, and that of your opponent Leylah Fernandez, will inspire the next generation of tennis players."

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson tweeted: "What a sensational match! Huge congratulations to Emma Raducanu.

"You showed extraordinary skill, poise and guts and we are all hugely proud of you."
It was a historic night for British sport's newest star which led pundits to predict big things and seemingly brought the UK to a standstill...

Virginia Wade, who was present at Arthur Ashe Stadium to witness Raducanu's win, was the last British woman to win a Grand Slam singles title - at Wimbledon in 1977.
In an unprecedented run Raducanu became the first qualifier to win a major and has done so without dropping a set.

"A star is born," tennis legend Martina Navratilova said. "Emma Raducanu makes history and she is just getting started."

Former British number one Greg Rusedski, speaking to Amazon Prime, added: "She is going to be a multi-Grand Slam winner, a world number one.

"She is the real deal and it is a breath of fresh air having an 18-year-old win the event."
Raducanu, whose run to the fourth round at Wimbledon earlier this summer is her only other Grand Slam appearance, will take home £1.8m in prize money and rise from 150th to 23rd in the world rankings.

Former Wimbledon champion Pat Cash described her success as "mindboggling".
"This [a qualifier winning a Grand Slam] is something I never could have believed would happen," the Australian said on BBC Radio 5 Live.

"I think I am going to wake up. It is so unbelievable. It is flabbergasting to see this performance."

Tim Henman, another ex-British number one who was courtside in his role working for Amazon, said: "She will win more of these [Grand Slams], she is that good.
"This is not some flash in the pan or fairytale. She is playing 'top-five tennis'.
"Her world will be turned upside down but she has good people around her and it will be a hell of a ride if she can stay injury free."

Raducanu won the title with a classy performance in a high-calibre match against Canada's Fernandez that lasted almost two hours.

Sports / Leeds Defender Struijk SENT OFF For Nasty Tackle On Liverpool Starlet Elliott by oluwaseyi02(m): 7:42pm On Sep 12, 2021
Leeds' Pascal Struijk has been sent off for a poor tackle on Harvey Elliott which saw the Liverpool starlet leave the pitch on a stretcher in agony.

The England youth international was brought down just shy of the hour mark at Elland Road and required extensive medical attention from staff on the scene before he was removed from the pitch.

His opponent was dimissed with a striaght red card by referee Craig Pawson following a VAR review.

With Liverpool leading 2-0 in West Yorkshire thanks to goals either side of half-time from Mohamed Salah - who brought up a century of Premier League strikes - and Fabinho, Elliott set off down the right flank in pursuit of a long ball.

Leeds defender Struijk tracked him down close to the halfway mark and came in with a low flying challenge that left the Reds starlet on the ground.

Players from both sides waved on medical staff from the technical areas directly in front of the incident, near coaches Jurgen Klopp and Marcelo Bielsa, before referee Pawson had even brought play to a halt.

Medics continued to attend to Elliott while players from both sides mingled, before VAR dismissed Struijk for his challenge - with television broadcasts studiously avoiding any replay of the incident.

Sports / Mourinho Takes Charge Of His 1,000th Game As Coach As Roman Faces Sassuolo by oluwaseyi02(m): 10:02pm On Sep 11, 2021
José Mourinho takes charge of his 1,000th game as a coach and will be looking to stretch his unbeaten home run in Serie A.

The Special One has never lost a home game in Serie A so far in his career. Therefore he is unbeaten in 39 games with Inter and Roma and he could move closer to Max Allegri’s record of 41 games unbeaten if he avoid defeat against Sassuolo. Nicolò Zaniolo and Lorenzo Pellegrini are not fully fit after international duty. Chris Smalling has recovered from an injury and could make his debut this season.

Sassuolo have collected four points from their first two Serie A games. Giacomo Raspadori is the man of the moment having scored his first goal with Italy earlier this week. The Italian starlet is expected to start over Gianluca Scamacca at the Stadio Olimpico. Only Pedro Obiang is out of action for the Neroverdi.

Stat fact: Sassuolo have won their last five away games, but never beat Roma in their previous eight meetings at the Stadio Olimpic

Sports / Zlatan Considers Himself Equal To Ronaldo & Messi As The Best In The World by oluwaseyi02(m): 11:12am On Sep 11, 2021
Zlatan Ibrahimovic believes he should be considered the equal of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi in the debate over the world's greatest player.

The 39-year-old Swedish striker, still going strong at AC Milan, has enjoyed a hugely successful career at nine clubs in seven countries, scoring 502 goals.

Yet despite never winning the Champions League or the Ballon d'Or - honours won multiple times by both Ronaldo and Messi - Ibrahimovic says he shouldn't be regarded as inferior to them.

'If you're talking about intrinsic qualities, I have nothing less than them,' he told France Football magazine.

'If you look at the trophies… yes, I didn't win the Champions League.

'But I don't know how you calculate it. I'm not obsessed with it because when you do good things collectively, the individual follows. The individual cannot be good if the collective is not good.

'[Do] I miss the Ballon d'Or? No, it is the Ballon d'Or that misses me! Deep down, I think I'm the best player in the world.

'I don't think it's relevant to compare players with each other. Everyone has played in their generation, with different team-mates… [it is] difficult to compare. I think everyone has their story and should face it.'

Despite playing for the likes of Juventus, Inter Milan, AC Milan, Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester United, Ibrahimovic has never succeeded in winning the Champions League.

Milan will play in Europe's top competition this season for the first time since 2013-14, but Ibrahimovic is fast running out of opportunities to win it as he approaches 40.

They have been paired with Atletico Madrid, Liverpool and Porto in a tricky group.

He hasn't played for Milan yet this season but they won their two opening Serie A matches against Sampdoria and Cagliari. They host Lazio on Sunday.

Ronaldo, meanwhile, is poised to make the first appearance of his second spell at Manchester United when they host Newcastle United in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon.

He returned to the Old Trafford club after leaving Juventus in a deal worth an initial £12.85m.

Messi also moved over the summer, signing for PSG from Barcelona. He made his debut for the club against Reims before the international fortnight.

Sports / Manchester United recoup Ronaldo transfer fee without he kicking a ball. by oluwaseyi02(m): 3:50pm On Sep 10, 2021
Man United re-sign Ronaldo
Manchester United have of course re-signed Cristiano Ronaldo, over a decade after he departed the club for Real Madrid:

It was reported that Ronaldo has set the Red Devils back an initial £12.8m.

Ronaldo helps recoup transfer fee
And, despite CR7 yet to play a single game for his new club, he has already helped Man United recoup his transfer fee via shirt sales.

The Portuguese has set several record through his shirt sales.

Firstly, it was revealed that the CR7 shirt had broken the record for the fastest-ever selling jersey online in the English top-flight within the first 12 hours of going on sale.

On the back of this, it was reported that Man United enjoyed ‘the highest day of online sales ever on a single sports merchandise site outside of North America’ recently.

And now, as explained by the Manchester Evening News using data from Love the Sales, United have already made in excess of the transfer fee paid for Ronaldo.

It is reported that Ronaldo 7 shirt sales are said to have shot up by 600 per cent compared to data from last summer.

This has led to a sales figure of around £188m for the shirts, which would see Man United earn just over £13m:

The hype has translated to sales close to an incredible £188m. For Manchester United, this means commissions of just over £13m – officially surpassing the £12.9m fee United paid to Juventus.

Sports / OFFICIAL: Ligue 1 Is Not Among The Top 5 Leagues by oluwaseyi02(m): 2:16pm On Aug 26, 2021
French giants Paris Saint-Germain is one of the richest clubs in the world. They have spent some huge money on player signings as well as on player wages. They have now almost made a dream World XI team on their own with Messi, Neymar and Mbappe up front, though Mbappe may leave for Real Madrid. But still, PSG has Di Maria in their attacking ranks.

New signing Wijnaldum will partner Veratti in the middle of the park. And Ramos, Hakimi and Donnarumma will look into the defensive parts. PSG signed Ramos and Messi, two of the most decorated players of this generation, on a free transfer.

However, it has now been made official that the French league, Ligue 1 is not in the top 5 leagues in the world anymore. Portuguese league, Primeira Liga has overtaken them into the 5th position.

UEFA have just confirmed the Portuguese league has now taken over Ligue 1 as the 5th best league in the world meaning Lionel Messi doesn't play his football in a top 5 league anymore

This means Lionel Messi, Sergio Ramos, Neymar will now play in one of the best leagues around the world. They will be plying their trade outside the top 5 leagues in the world, probably for the first time in their career.

You can check the Association club coefficients on UEFA’s Official Website yourself.

There have been many fans who are upset to see such a monopoly of a club, PSG, in the French league as it eliminates competition even though Lille won the Ligue 1 last season. And now Messi will be playing in one of the lesser competitive leagues, which surely undermines his abilities.

Health / Meet World's Dirtiest Man Amou Haji, Who Has Not Bathed In Over 65 Years. by oluwaseyi02(m): 10:22am On Aug 24, 2021
Meet the world's 'dirtiest' man who hasn't showered in 65 years
Haji is terrified of water, thus the aversion to bathing. He believes he'll fall sick if he bathes and this has stopped him from taking a shower in over six decades

Amou Haji, an 83-year-old Iranian is labelled as the world's dirtiest man as he has not bathed in 65 years. Haji is terrified of water, thus the aversion to bathing. He believes he'll fall sick if he bathes and this has stopped him from taking a shower in over six decades.

Life in the Iranian desert, with rotting porcupine meat as his favourite meal, is the one that he is accustomed to. He just might give Bear Grylls, the Man V/s Wild presenter, a run for his money.

To stay healthy he drinks five litres of water from a rusty oil can every day. He also loves to smoke but his style of smoking involves inhaling dried cow dung instead of tobacco.

Locals believe that a broken heart was the reason that Amou Haji chose this lifestyle. However, he still hasn't given up on finding love.

Haji has no home, he wanders near the isolated village of Dejgah in the Southern Iranian province of Fars and lives in holes made in the desert outside the village. Although the villagers built a hut for him but he chose not to live there.

He has become almost the same colour as the earth around him and he totally blends in with his environment. Locals say they often mistake him for a rock when he stays still.

Haji has no care for the comforts of the world and is content living a nomadic life.

Sports / Tammy Abraham: My Main Striker Should Come From Africa – Mourinho by oluwaseyi02(m): 7:34pm On Aug 20, 2021
AS Roma manager, Jose Mourinho has offered explanations on why he signed former Chelsea striker, Tammy Abraham for €40 million this season.

Mourinho who begins his new managerial career with the Series A giants said he signed Abraham because his philosophy in using main strikers with African descent has not changed.

The former Tottenham manager who discloses that using strikers with African blood had been his lucky charm said that such players have aided in his winning trophies as a manager.

“My philosophy will never change. My center backs can come from anywhere. Midfielders also.

“But my main Striker should be of African Origin, that is my lucky charm to win titles,”
Mourinho who had previously coached Manchester United stated.

“This is why I pushed for young Tammy Abraham to come join me.”

The former Real Madrid coach took a dip at his former club, Manchester United for not utilising their striker, Marcus Rashford very well.

“If you remember under my watch at Man United, I made Rashford world class at very young age, we won Europa League and other honors.

“I left, and he got new lessons from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer , so he forgot to score goals. It’s painful to see.”

Tammy Abraham signed a five-year deal with Roma but with an agreement with Chelsea to buy back from 2023.

Mourinho has been successful with clubs he managed while deploying African strikers as his hitmen with Didier Drogba, Samuel Eto’o in Chelsea and Inter Milan all playing prominent roles in his title-ladden managerial career.

Sports / Trabzonspor 1-2 Roma: Mourinho's First Game In Charge Of Roma Ended In Victory by oluwaseyi02(m): 8:00am On Aug 20, 2021
Jose Mourinho's first game in charge of Roma ended in victory as goals from Lorenzo Pellegrini and Eldor Shomurodov saw them beat Trabzonspor in the first leg of their Europa Conference League play-off.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan had a goal disallowed on 25 minutes for handball, but the former Arsenal and Manchester United star set up Italy midfielder Pellegrini to volley home and net the first goal of the Mourinho tenure.

Former Napoli star Marek Hamsik tested new Roma signing Rui Patricio from distance but the Turkish side rang the changes in the second half, which saw Andreas Cornelius equalise with his first touch.

The former Cardiff City striker rose above Gianluca Mancini to nod in Bruno Peres' cross from the right, although there we claims the Brazilian was in an offside position when he received the ball before crossing.

Mourinho's men were taken aback by the equaliser and former Wolves goalkeeper Patricio had to be on hand to save twice from Anthony Nwakaeme.

But Mourinho's men would not be denied their victory despite their slight wobble.

Gianluca Mancini managed a header from a corner, only for it to come off the woodwork before Shomurodov reacted fastest to the rebound.

The second leg of the play-off will be at the Stadio Olimpico next Thursday.

Sports / Who Are The Most Charitable Football Players In The World? by oluwaseyi02(m): 6:12am On Aug 20, 2021
Footballers always try to set an example for the rest of us, and one of the ways in which they try to make the world a better place is by donating to charity and being passionate about a cause.

To be among the most charitable football players in the world, one doesn’t necessarily have to be the richest.
Because of the large profits footballers make for their teams, they usually have very lucrative salaries; therefore, some argue that footballers today have become greedy. But the amount of money that some of these players donate to the different charities annually proves otherwise.
Who are the most charitable football players in the world? Let’s find out.
Are you curious to see if your favorite footballer is charitable enough to make this list? Let’s see!

Didier Drogba

If you start talking about footballers giving wages to charity, Drogba’s name is bound to be mentioned at some point in your conversation. The former Chelsea forward Didier Drogba’s effort to help the people of the Ivory Coast in the 2006 World Cup finished a 5-year-old civil war in Drogba's home country. His name was mentioned in TIME magazine’s 100 most influential people of 2010.
Drogba also founded the Didier Drogba Foundation in 2007 to help improve healthcare and educational conditions in Africa. Not many people have done as much off the field for their homeland as Didier Drogba.

Lionel Messi

Considered by many as the best football player in the world, Lionel Messi, the brand ambassador of UNICEF, is definitely known for being one of the most charitable football players in the world.
He has been actively reaching out to and helping the less privileged children in Nepal, Bangladesh, and Indonesia through the Asia campaign, which resulted in the improvement of the education systems in Indonesia, Nepal, and Bangladesh. Other than his work with UNICEF, Messi also contributes money to community projects in Argentina. And on top of that, he paid for the renovation and modernization of a hospital in his hometown.

Cristiano Ronaldo

Cristiano Ronaldo is one of the most famous footballers engaged in charity these days. As a tribute to his charitable work, Ronaldo was awarded the "Athletes Gone Good Award" for most charitable work. Ronaldo is also known for donating $83,000 to the fund for the surgery of a 10-year-old kid.
You rarely come across athletes who have donated to charity as much as Ronaldo has. He is worth about $108 million, and he is at the top of the list of famous footballers who are engaged in charity. In 2012, Ronaldo raised 1.5 million euros to build a school on the Gaza Strip by auctioning off his Golden Boot award.

Ronaldo got involved with the “Save the Children Foundation”, a foundation formed to raise money for the earthquake relief in Nepal after the country was hit by a major earthquake back in 2015.

Mesut Ozil

The former Arsenal and ex German national team player Mesut Ozil did one of the most selfless things as he donated the earnings from his World Cup victory, in the amount of 237,000 pounds to Brazil, the country hosting the World Cup, to finance the surgery of 23 Brazilian children.
In 2017, Ozil did it again! Working with “My Shining Star”, he helped provide children fighting cancer the chance to fulfill their dreams, like the time invited one child to be his personal guest at a match with Sunderland.

Gareth Barry

After being introduced to the "Sun and Happiness charity foundation" that supports the children struggling with poverty and illness, the Everton midfielder Gareth Barry gave away his luxurious Villa in Spain to the foundation in 2011 to provide living space for homeless kids. That puts Barry among the most charitable football players in the world.

Michael Essien

The former Ghanaian national team player and Jose Mourinho’s top pick for the midfielder position is one of the most charitable footballers in the world.
The “Michael Essien Foundation” started by Essien himself is one of the most well-known football players charity foundations and is also known for providing necessities such as health care facilities, clean drinkable water, public lavatories, and libraries in his hometown.
Michael Essien got famous as the guy who would do anything to make sure his team wins. Off the pitch, Essien is just as passionate as he is during his matches and works round the clock to provide the necessary help for Ghana and its neighboring areas.

David Beckham

One of the most famous football players of all time, David Beckham is a member of many charities apart from his foundation created by Victoria and David Beckham named Victoria and David Beckham Charitable Trust. He is also a strong supporter of a charitable campaign to aid injured Army veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan.

Mario Balotelli

You probably didn’t expect Balotelli to be on this list. Usually, when Balotelli is on the news, it is for all the wrong reasons. He is known for his bad attitude and his short temper on the field, but apparently, he is a sweetheart when he gets off the field.
Considering that he donates 50% of his earnings to help the children in Africa, he is truly one of the most charitable football players in the world. Nicknamed ‘Super Mario’ by his fans, he is one of the many footballers giving wages to charity.

Dirk Kuyt

The former member of the Liverpool team, Dirk Kuyt is partly famous for his Foundation the “Dirk Kuyt Foundation” which aims to help the children in his home country, Holland in addition to Brazil, Nepal, and Ghana since 2006. His foundation is one of the most effective organizations among other football players charity foundations.
Dirk Kuyt began his professional football career as a striker, but he became famous after he started playing as a winger. When he retired, he made it his goal in life to teach the sport he is most passionate about, to children.
His other foundation, “Fun for Everyone”, organizes games and events in which disabled children can participate. He believes that playing sports can help these children do better in their social lives.

Craig Bellamy
The Premier League star started his own Craig Bellamy Foundation, that provides young minds with education as well as teaching them football and has also given away 1.4 million pounds of his income to start the foundation in Sierra-Leone.

Jermain Defoe

While we don’t know how much money Jermain Defoe has donated to charity, we do know that he’s without a doubt one of the most charitable football players in history. Every time he finds a cause he truly cares for he takes it personally.
When Defoe heard about Bradley Lowery, the young Sunderland fan who was diagnosed with cancer, he made extra effort to meet Lowery and make him the team’s unofficial mascot. When Lowery passed away because of cancer, Defoe tattooed his name on his right arm and said, “God has you in his arms and I will always carry you in my heart. Sleep tight little one. My best friend.”
Defoe's charity work has been very significant in the last few years so much so that last year he was awarded an OBE by the Queen of England. Knowing that he’s one of the most active footballers giving wages to charity, that award is well deserved. He started the “Jermain Defoe Foundation” in 2013 to support the Caribbean children who required help, then his friendship with the late Bradley Lowery made everyone love him for his kind heart.
While he was playing at Sunderland, Defoe met the young Bradley, who was struggling with a rare type of cancer called Neuroblastoma. He took Lowery onto the pitch during games as a mascot both with Sunderland and England. He also attended his birthday party and visited the family on many times before Bradley's tragically passed away in July of 2017.
During the ceremony where he received his OBE title, Defoe dedicated it to Lowery and everyone involved with the Jermain Defoe Foundation. If that doesn’t make him one of the most charitable football players in the world, I don’t know what does.

Nwankwo Kanu

Nwankwo got national recognition in the United Kingdom as a striker for Arsenal and Portsmouth. But when it came to where he wanted to make a difference he chose his home country, Nigeria.
Regarded as one of the most charitable soccer players in the world, Kanu set up the “Kanu Heart Foundation” in Nigeria to make sure that children who suffer from cardiac ailments received the help they needed. Since the foundation was started in 2000, over 500 intensive open-heart surgeries have been performed on children who needed them.

Neymar

Neymar is one of the top three highest-paid footballers of all time and definitely one of the most charitable football players in the world. And he knows just what to do with his money. He put his earnings to good use by becoming one of the many famous footballers who are engaged in charity.
Not only does Neymar donate such large sums, but he has also started his own foundation, “Waves for Water”. Neymar’s foundation helps raise funds to provide Brazilians with clean drinkable water resources. In addition to all of those charitable efforts, he also organizes charity events and games that raise millions of euros to be spent on good causes.

Hector Bellerin

Hector Bellerin has so much potential as a star football player, so it’s great that he’s learning to be generous at a young age. While the Spanish star was playing in the U-21 European Championship, he announced he’s going to donate 50 pounds for every minute he played on the field.
After the tournament, Bellerin had managed to play a total of 381 minutes. He then kept his promise and donated 19,050 pounds to the British Red Cross. Surprisingly, Bellerin later reached out to his fans asked them to suggest other charities for him to support.
Bellerin has already given away so much money to various charitable organizations that it’s safe to say he is one of the most charitable football players worldwide.

Fredric Kanoute

Frederic Kanoute started his professional career in the Premier League in 2000 with West Ham United. In 2003, he was transferred to the Tottenham Hotspurs and was later sold to Sevilla. Right after leaving Tottenham, Kanoute started the “Kanoute Foundation” in Mali.
Being originally from Mali, Kanoute wanted to give back to his home country, therefore he used the foundation as the means to help the people of Mali. He successfully built a “Children’s Village” there which is known as Sakina, where orphans and needy children will be taken care of. The kids have access to healthcare and athletic facilities right in the village.

Rafael Marquez

Rafa Marquez only had a short career in Europe and made the most impact in the United States and Mexico. Yet, with everything he’s done to enhance the lives of the poor, he deserves to be mentioned among the most charitable football players in the world.
In 2005, Marquez founded several Soccer Clinics in his home country of Mexico. He built the clinics in areas where children were underprivileged and got in trouble with the law. He also managed to start nutrition and education programs to give these young people the chance they would need to be successful in life.

Samuel Eto’o

As the next player in our list of the most charitable football players worldwide, we have to talk about Samuel Eto’o.
Samuel Eto’o has spent more than 20 years as a pro soccer player. Starting his career with Real Madrid in 1997, he currently wears the Qatar SC's jersey. His turbulent football career has helped Eto’o become deeply aware of just how poor some parts of the world are.
Videos

Like many others on the list of most charitable football players in the world, Eto’o has directed his attention to his home country; Cameroon. Through his foundation, the philanthropic athlete has been able to give orphans education, food, toys, and clothes.

Jack Wilshere

Same as Jermain Defoe, who was mentioned earlier on this list, Jack Wilshere took charity seriously after meeting Jack Marshall. Wilshere was 22 when he met the four-year-old cancer patient. Overwhelmed with feelings, Wilshere became a close friend of Jack and his family right until the tragic end.
After meeting Marshall, Wilshere continued to stay in touch with the family. He even made an effort to help when he realized that Jack’s brother was being bullied at school. Wilshere played football with him in the park while his stalkers watched.

Iker Casillas

Considered one of the best goalies worldwide, Iker Casillas is also one of the most charitable football players in the world. In 2011, he was chosen to be the Goodwill Ambassador of one of the Development Programmes of the United Nations.
Casillas was involved with the program to advocate for the rights of the children everywhere while also fighting poverty among children. In addition to his work as part of the program, Casillas also donates money to needy Spanish families who have been hit by different crises.

Kylian Mbappe

Kylian Mbappe was only 19 when he won the World Cup with the French national team in 2018. For a teenager, receiving a check for 265,000 pounds is a big deal. But Mbappe surprised everyone when he donated all the money to charity and therefore guaranteed his spot on the list of the most charitable football players in the world.
In 2017, Mbappe donated his whole paycheck to a charity that he was involved with. This charity focused on disability awareness and provided aid and services for people struggling with different types of disabilities.

Sports / Can Lukaku End The 'curse' Of Chelsea's No.9 Shirt? by oluwaseyi02(m): 7:22am On Aug 19, 2021
Romelu Lukaku has a point to prove following his sensational return to Chelsea, 10 years after he first signed for the Premier League giants.

Since the Premier League introduced squad numbers in 1993, 15 different players have donned the No.9 shirt for Chelsea – and remarkably few have been successful.

The shirt has become somewhat ‘cursed’, with players tending to struggle at the club while wearing it, despite their collective £170.5million in transfer fees.

We’ve taken a look at each player and ranked them for their contributions during their time wearing nine at Stamford Bridge.

15. Radamel Falcao

After an unsuccessful season on loan at Manchester United, Falcao was given another chance to prove himself to the English audience with Chelsea in 2015-16.

However, his loan was incredibly unsuccessful, and the Blues unsurprisingly turned down the chance to sign him for £38million at the end of the season.

With a wage of £140,000 per week, Falcao cost Roman Abramovich £800,000 per shot and £57,000 per touch of the ball, scoring just once in 12 appearances.

14. Franco Di Santo

Aged just 18, Di Santo made a £3.4million move from Chilean club Audax Italiano in January 2008, but he failed to score in 16 appearances in all competitions for Chelsea.

He joined Blackburn on loan for the 2009-10 campaign and was then sold to Wigan before going on to appear for Werder Bremen and Schalke in the Bundesliga.

13. Khalid Boulahrouz

The most despicable of the lot is Boulahrouz, and his ranking is 98% based on the fact that we can’t bear to see a defender wearing the No.9 shirt.

He was also extremely forgettable at Stamford Bridge, making 20 appearances in a solitary season.

12. Chris Sutton

Four years after winning the league title, Blackburn were relegated and Sutton saw himself moved on to Chelsea for a £10million fee.

The striker’s time at Stamford Bridge was a dismal one, lasting just one season and including one goal before he was moved on to Celtic the following summer.

“I went into a team with the likes of Zola, Desailly, Gus Poyet, Dennis Wise, and a really good manager in [Gianluca] Vialli, so I don’t blame anyone else,” Sutton told us.

“I started poorly, I missed chances, I lost confidence, and I feel I let Vialli down. I thought he was a really good man, and I don’t think spending £10million on me that season really helped his managerial career.”

11. Tony Cascarino

Cascarino struggled in his two seasons at Chelsea at the start of the Premier League era, scoring just eight times in 51 appearances.

The striker went on to great success in France, though, scoring 61 goals in 84 appearances for Marseille, and adding another 44 in three seasons at Nancy.

10. Steve Sidwell

Yes, that’s right, a 24-year-old Sidwell was handed the No.9 shirt when he joined Chelsea on a free transfer in 2007.

He lasted only one year, though, making 25 appearances in all competitions and scoring once before he was sold on to Aston Villa for £5million.

9. Mateja Kezman

After 129 goals in four years at PSV, Kezman joined Chelsea with a weight of expectation on his shoulders.

In one season at the club, he managed just four league goals before being shipped out to Atletico Madrid, though he still labels the move “the best thing that ever happened to me.

“I don’t know if I made a mistake because I moved away so quickly, but the transfer to Chelsea made my dreams come true,” he said.

8. Gonzalo Higuain

Signed on loan from Juventus in January 2019, Higuain took the brave decision to take the No.9 shirt.

Chelsea were given the option to buy him permanently for €36million or extend his loan by a season for half of that. The fact the Blues did neither says it all about how successful he was.

Still, he did actually score five times in 14 games in the Premier League, which in the confines of this list is actually pretty good.

7. Alvaro Morata

The most expensive of the lot, Morata cost Chelsea a club-record £60million in 2017 but rarely looked capable of justifying the fee.

Morata displayed quality at times, managing a not disastrous 11 goals in his first season in the Premier League, but it’s fair to say he failed to fill Diego Costa’s boots.

6. Tammy Abraham

Abraham, a product of the Chelsea academy, has been out on loan to various clubs, but he has finally been given his chance – and the No.9 shirt – at Stamford Bridge by Frank Lampard.

The 22-year-old said: “I’m honoured to wear the No.9 at Chelsea. I spoke to the manager and he asked me if I was ready to take it. I said ‘Yeah, I’m ready’.

“I’m glad he offered it to me. I’ve heard all the rubbish about the No 9, but I’m here to play my game and do my best.”

It’s still early days but Abraham looks to have lifted the ‘curse’, as so far this season he has scored 10 goals in 12 Premier League outing.

5. Hernan Crespo

Crespo wore the No.21 shirt in his debut season at the club but was handed the No.9 following a year away on loan at AC Milan as Jose Mourinho attempted to convince him to stay.

In total, he scored 25 goals in 73 appearances for the Blues before joining Inter on a temporary two-year deal, until his Chelsea contract expired.

4. Mark Stein

Stein was signed by Glenn Hoddle in an attempt to ease his woes in attack, and he certainly did that, grabbing 14 goals in 24 games immediately after arriving from Stoke.

He left Chelsea having scored 25 times in two seasons before nine appearances without a goal in the 1995-96 campaign proved to be the end.

Notably, it was not until after his debut season that Stein was handed the dreaded No.9 shirt.

“I am pleased I was part of the journey,” Stein says of his time at Stamford Bridge.

“When I was at Chelsea the club was building gradually and then all of a sudden it became rapid. The fact I am part of that history fills me with joy.”

3. Fernando Torres

After a prolonged period of interest from Abramovich, Torres eventually joined Chelsea for £50million in January 2011.

Widely regarded as a flop at the club, Torres in fact scored 45 goals in 172 appearances, which is a better record than many might realise.

More importantly, he helped Chelsea lift the Champions League trophy for the first time in their history, scoring that memorable goal against Barcelona in the semi-final of the competition before adding nine goals the following season as his side won the Europa League.

2. Gianluca Vialli
Vialli scored 40 goals in 78 appearances for Chelsea, while also taking up a player-manager role just 18 months into his time at the club.

An icon of 90s football, Vialli was well-liked at Stamford Bridge, winning the FA Cup, League Cup and the Cup Winners Cup during his time as manager at the Bridge.

He joined the club in 1996 and eventually left at the start of the 2000-01 campaign after falling out with a number of players.

1. Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink

Another club-record transfer, Chelsea paid Atletico Madrid £15million for Hasselbaink in 2000, but unlike most of the others on this list, the Dutchman actually justified the fee, going on to score 70 Premier League goals in 136 appearances for the Blues.

“I have great memories of my time at Chelsea,” Hasselbaink said in 2013. “I had four wonderful years there and I still go back. I was there just recently to watch them play, and I always get a great reception.

“They’re a club that I really, really love. The problem was that we didn’t win enough and that’s the regret.

Sports / Did You Know That Both Neymar And Messi Were MVP At The Just Concluded COPA 2021 by oluwaseyi02(m): 10:25pm On Aug 18, 2021
CONMEBOL announce Messi and Neymar as Copa America's best players

They will share the award

Argentina's Lionel Messi and Brazil's Neymar will share the Copa America's Player of the Tournament award.

CONMEBOL have announced that Argentina captain Lionel Messi and Brazil star Neymar are the joint winners of the Player of the Tournament award at this summer's Copa America.

Argentina and Brazil will face off at the Maracana in the final this Saturday night, but the CONMEBOL committee struggled to pick a winner when it came to the Messi vs Neymar battle for the MVP award.

"It is not possible to choose only one player, because this competition has two best players," CONMEBOL said in a statement.

"They demonstrated in each match their different qualities that make them players of integrity, with technical and tactical quality, for their intelligence with and without the ball, and their decision making, which is always decisive.

"Both are finalists with their national teams, they have performed at a high level, being key players in the goalscoring charts in this tournament.

"In addition, they are leaders in assists - the Argentine has five and the Brazilian has provided three - which demonstrates how decisive they have been on the pitch during this CONMEBOLCopa America 2021."

This decision is based on the study and monitoring of CONMEBOL's Technical Review Group. This is the first time that this award has been split between two players
