Culture / Re: He refused to Prostrate as Yoruba culture demands by Omade: 11:36am On Jul 25, 2009
Hello everyone.

I'm Yoruba like many of you here.

But I do have a problem with prostrating to someone even older than me. When doing "doba'le" it doesn't mean that you respect the person. In fact I know many yorubas who do "doba'le" but still disrespect elders in other ways. So all these doesn't make sense at all. Respect is earned not forced on someone. (please read the whole stuff before gettin angry, be patient)

In case you don't know, God Almighty said not to prostrate to anyone except Him alone in the Bible, Quran, etc, If you're a strong christian or muslim you should know better. And prostration is a form of worship but in a lesser form. And all worship should be for God alone whether small or big.

Prostration means that you lower yourself before someone, making him/her greater than you. Only God is The Great not humans.

If Yoruba culture was so good how come we always fight each other for minor things, how come black people hates each other, in fact how come Africa is always the last in the world?

And last thing Yorubas themselves need to know where the culture come from before enforcing it on someone. But sadly, many yorubas don't know their history they just blindly follow elders tales who don't know anything themselves. (Trust me, it's true)

One hint for you guys (read proper history), is that Yoruba culture comes from paganism, which is against God Almighty's Laws.

Now I do respect elders more than many Yorubas claim, as the Holy Books required. I'm not calling them by name, insulting them, ignoring, shouting on them, etc, But I do help, cherish, be kind to them and I get them gifts among other respectful things. That's what's meant by respect in the Holy Books.

Only part-time christians and muslim don't understand that.

I know many of you will disagree with the above but it's alright. I can understand when something is been so blended in people's mind it's so hard to remove. I went through that phase before but I'm now free from that.

See the bigger picture and open your mind. Read, read, read, There are good things as well as bad things in a culture, not all cultures are perfect.
Remember Yoruba culture mostly comes from paganism (oricha, spirits, sacrifice, etc, ) again read more books and research,
