He is amazed that every pair eventually is chosen, even the ones he thinks are ugly.

He says he has enough rocks to last 400 years. I’ve sorted and prioritized some, in an effort to tidy up. Typical daughter. People bring him rocks, and not all of them are so special. He buys rocks too, and is fond of lab-made opal, a very flashy rock that comes in brilliant colors. He always did like gaudy things. We had a pink and silver bathroom growing up, and orange floral carpet.

My dad’s name is Willis, and he will be 90 in July. He has made thousands of pairs of earrings. They have gone to all the continents. He has never sold a pair and refuses to do so; they are gifts. He first started making them about 25 years ago as one of his retirement hobbies, along with singing, playing tennis and golf. He’s had to give up tennis and golf, and even singing is getting more difficult — his range is shrinking. But, he says, a man has to have a reason to get up in the morning.

Back in his hardware store in Freeman, South Dakota, an old farmer told him this. The farmer had moved into the small town to retire, and was explaining why he still did what he did. Now my dad tells me this almost every phone conversation. He makes his earrings at a lapidary workshop at the retirement park in which he lives, in Mesa, Arizona. On Mondays he is in charge, and has to be there at 8:30 a.m.; he might get as many as five pairs made on a Monday. Other days he might not get to work until 9:30 a.m. He often sees his earrings on women in the park. He doesn’t know them all, but they know him. He is the Earring Man.

Since his other activities have dwindled, his social circles for sharing earrings have diminished. His earrings display gets full, and his neighbors already have too many earrings. He has lost my mom, then another earring-wearing partner. As his daughter, I’ve had the pleasure of helping him find homes for his earrings. He recently mailed me a box with 50 pairs of beautiful earrings, in bread bags. My assignment is to give them away to women who will enjoy them. I made an earring display — a piece of denim sewed onto a wooden hanger. It hangs in my car. I find homes for them everywhere I go — the ski trail parking lot, the Spenard Builders Supply parking lot, music practices, bridge friends, the woman who cuts my hair, the gals at the dentist office. There are two pairs wrapped in blue tape with names in Sharpie, on hold for young friends who will be allowed to have their ears pierced when they turn 10.

Dad says, if his earrings brighten the life of some woman somewhere, it’s worthwhile. A man has to have a reason to get up in morning. So off to work he goes, making the world a more beautiful place, two earrings at a time.

Late one night in 2016, after an argument with her then-boyfriend, Pamela found herself at the mercy of his pit bull, which bit her right ear and wouldn’t let go, despite her ex’s attempts to intervene.

By the time she got the dog off her, the entire ear was ripped off.
“There was nothing there. Absolutely nothing there,” says the 30-year-old finance worker from Elmhurst, Queens, who withheld her last name for professional reasons.

For Pamela, the yearslong process to rebuild her ear wasn’t just excruciatingly painful — “there were 11 surgeries, I think. I lost track after the eighth one” — it was a struggle toward getting back an important part of her identity.

“It’s a cultural thing,” she says. “Most Latina women get their ears pierced when they’re really young. So all my life, all I knew was ears and earrings just go together.”

But on Jan. 28, she finally got that part of her old self back — when Dr. Roberto Flores pierced a shimmering stud through the lobe he meticulously rebuilt with the help of new 3D-printing technology.

“This is the final part: having an ear with an earlobe that you can actually put an earring through,” says Flores, a plastic surgeon at NYU Langone Health.

The starting line was one that’s still hard for Pam to talk about. After the attack, the accumulated blood and tissue left her temporarily deaf in that ear. But she didn’t know who could rebuild it.

Enter Flores, who’s reconstructed more than a dozen ears in his career. But unlike Pam, his previous patients were either born without an ear or had underdeveloped ones, a rare condition called microtia. Pam’s was the first ear he had to rebuild after a traumatic injury.

To do it, he used an innovative new technique: By 3D printing a model of her healthy ear, he was able to “whittle and form” a nearly identical structure using cartilage from her ribs, then covering it with skin grafted from her arm.

“You’re basically using classic sculpting techniques,” says Flores, who sculpts in his spare time. “But her entire ear is made from her.”

He says the idea came to him about three years ago, when he was teaching his residents how to construct an ear the old way: “The doctor draws it by hand on a flat piece of plastic and essentially has a stencil. It’s pretty rudimentary.”

Flores, who works on a bioengineering research team, found his 3D-printing technique not only effective but inexpensive. Since he used the machines the medical center already had, the replica cost “under a dollar,” he says, as opposed to about $3,000 for contracting the model out to a manufacturing company.

While the reconstruction was painful, Pam says she always knew that it was a step toward getting back to the way things were before the horrifying attack. If her new ear heals correctly, she’ll be able to wear her favorite Tiffany earrings to her 31st birthday party this month.

“I’ll finally be back to myself,” she says. “It’s the true finish line.”

This week’s instalment took place last year, when Gillian Hurtig was training for a triathlon to commemorate her mother.

Dear stranger,

We met in a jewelry store in downtown Vancouver last year.

I wandered in one busy afternoon in March, clasping a pair of beautiful pearl earrings that I’d inherited from my mother, who passed away from ovarian cancer.

I’ve worn those earrings almost every day since, for nearly three decades.

My mother died when she was just 55 years old and, as I approached the age she was when diagnosed with cancer, I really started to think about my own health. I want to do everything I can to be strong and healthy, both mentally and physically.

So I signed up for a triathlon.

It was a huge accomplishment for me personally and something my mother never had a chance to do. When I crossed the finish line on a blustery, rainy September day, my mother was with me in spirit and in the beautiful pearl earrings I had worn.

I trained for a couple more triathlons after that first one and always wore my mother’s earrings.

I noticed that the backings were loose after so many years of use and so popped into your jewelry shop a few days before I was flying out for a race in Hawaii.

I explained why I needed the backings to be very tight — so there would be no chance of the earrings falling off while training or competing — and told you about why these earrings mean so much to me.

I could tell you really cared about what I was telling you and I got a little teary-eyed because you don’t share those kinds of stories with strangers normally.

You also told me about your mother and we bonded over the counter talking about our families.

You eventually found the perfect backings that kept my earrings really tight and secure. I was just so happy knowing I could wear them again.

We hugged and you told me your name is Eileen.

I just couldn’t believe it. My mother’s name was Eileen, too.

What were the chances that I would stop at that jewelry store, find someone so kind and caring, and that your name would be Eileen?

I have chills right now thinking about it. It was just magic.

I told you this and started crying. You embraced me with the kind of motherly hug I had not had in so many years.

I later went to the race, wearing the earrings, and I was able to take both Eileens with me over the finish line. It was beautiful.

When Emily Blunt won the award for Best Supporting Actress at the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards, it was a joyful moment for Indonesian jewelry designer Eri Dwi Suciaji, the man behind her stunning waterfall earrings.

Hollywood’s star-studded awards season is always a gold mine for fashion lovers who get to see the biggest names in the film industry come out in the latest designs crafted by the biggest names in the fashion industry.

Clothing and jewelry from prominent designers and designer houses such as Dior and Oscar de la Renta are a common sight on the red carpet. Lately, Indonesian designers have been in the mix, with many of them being discovered by the stylists to the stars.

Most recently, it was Indonesian designer Eri Dwi Suciaji who was in the spotlight.

Under the Forevermark brand, Eri’s 11.73 carat diamond waterfall earrings in 18 carat white gold was worn by actress Emily Blunt at the recent SAG Awards, where she won the Best Supporting Actress award for her performance in innovative horror film A Quiet Place.

The earrings were personally handpicked by Blunt’s stylist Jessica Paster from a selection of Forevermark jewelry from Indonesia.

The earrings were paired with a custom crystal-embroidered pink Michael Kors gown and a silver Jimmy Choo clutch. Blunt also wore another jewelry piece from Forevermark, the “Force of Nature” – a 3.48 carat diamond ring designed by Louise Kriek of South Africa.

Brand manager of Forevermark Indonesia Devi Chayadi told The Jakarta Post on Wednesday the earrings, priced at around Rp 900 million ($63,712), were a custom one-off design for the red carpet event, though they were not told who would wear the jewelry.

“That’s actually the surprise factor. After Forevermark expanded to Indonesia in April last year, many opportunities have been provided by parent company De Beers Group and Forevermark, with their various markets participating in these kind of events,” Devi said.

She said Forevermark Indonesia and branches in other countries were invited by Forevermark USA in October last year to contribute to their operations by sending out a curated collection of jewelry to be showcased to the stylists of US celebrities.

The invitation, she said, was an opportunity to shine at star-studded events.

“The time frame was really short. We received the invitation in October and we had to send out the collection by December,” Devi said.

She said the design team started their design development from scratch as they had never taken part in a red carpet event.

Normally, product development for such earrings ranges from three to six months, but they sped up the process to meet the deadline.

Out of 32 submitted designs, 16 final jewelry pieces, ranging from necklaces to bangles, were selected to be produced and delivered to Los Angeles.

“At that time, Emily Blunt’s stylist Jessica Paster was looking for jewelry to match the gown to be used at the event. According to Jessica, she found a couple of interesting pieces for the look, one of which was Eri’s design,” Devi said.

Another piece from the collection, a necklace, was worn by actress Sandra Oh to a Golden Globes after-party. It was paired with a tuxedo-like jumpsuit and black and white sneakers.

As the 16 jewelry pieces are still in the United States, Devi said they would be shown to other celebrity stylists for the upcoming Academy Awards, giving the Indonesian company another chance at having its pieces grace a major event.

After the Oscars, the jewelry will be brought home and put on display. “We believe the designs are masterpieces in their own right,” she said. (ste)

Reily told Buzzfeed that she was inspired to turn her AirPods into earrings because she was afraid of losing them and that she bought them because she wanted to make sure there were no wires for her cats to chew on.

“I absolutely refuse to lose them. My cat ate through two pairs of Beats Bluetooth earphones, and all my other earphones, she told Buzzfeed. “So I got the AirPods because there was no wire for her to chew but I still needed something to connect them.”

The idea is simple. It’s a small chain that attaches to one of the AirPods and the other end of the chain has an earring hook. Reilly created a website to sell her Airings and there are a few options you can choose to customize them. Customers can choose a hoop, fish hook or clip-on style of earring and it can come in gold or silver. Buyers can choose from white, grey, black or transparent for the color of the connector.

According to her website, custom orders are limited because she won’t be able to keep track of all the orders and configurations on her own.
