Yes, it is old school. If what we practiced in 178BC is not old school, tell me what is. Are you ok dude?

See what I mean when I say you guys prefer to live in the past.

Because you are much more settled with your state in pre-historic time than modern day when you are losing to envying others who are progressing.

That is what happens to a stagnant society. Move guys, move. Time is changing fast.

And Igbo man thinks his culture has no place in modernity whereas Yoruba weddings have been copied all over Africa. Now you see how foo.lish you are.

No Sir, there are no Igbo begger in London and not any part of the world. Not in Igbo character.

Thanks for educating me on all the crimes you know of. You may wish to add credit card fraud, sham marriage and welfare fraud which the Yorubas here have perfected since ages. Igbos here are heading to parliament.

Sorry for angering you for being in London. It is not my fault. I actually live in Nigeria. I am on holiday here and with the change in weather, I will be back mid Nov. Ok.

Thanks but no thanks.

So you live in Nigeria and you happily put another location on your article. An Igbo man's dream is always to escape his village because he knows there's no life there.

@OnTheMoveWA,

I am afraid you have lost the moral justification to make any more request on this thread.

Hope you are okay? As in, a normal human? After being so battered in a thread you opened, you keep coming back.

Your illiteracy and ignorance have been so exponentially exposed that you should be hiding from entire Nairaland forum. But despite the attempts to uplift you and launder your witlessness, you keep missing the point, which is, THE JOKE IS ON YOU!!!!!

You may not bother to reply to this. (that's if you are okay??)

See this begger in London. How many cars did you wash yesterday? Please don't carry those drugs to Malaysia o. You know you have only one kidney after selling the other one

Another lesson for you. A quick one...

Igbos move so quickly and adapt to new things and new cultures.

Akwete is still in use today. But guess what, it is used for Odo masquerade and those fearsome Abriba war dancers. These are meant to reminisce the past.

Reason, there are finer, easier fabric and Igbos have moved with the trend and world. You know, as Igbos travelled and traded, they came in touch with cashmire, hollandis, ankara wax, linen, gabadine, just name it. Go to Aba and you will see fabric wonder.

If you are so proud of your native yoruba, pls post me a picture of a corporate office where yourba adire, buba, or ashoke is worn.

I won't want to name you a fool.

Bottom line = Igbos think their culture is old school. Good thinking from the drug pushers.

Gentlemen,

Note that this thread has had over 1,400 views. My point is that even though it is clear that the Op came out to spew his ignorance, please, instead of coming down hard on him, educate him. Provide him with the knowledge that he lacks that is fuelling his prejudice. And by so doing, you will not only improve him but also improve the knowledge of many others like him who are watching from a vintage point but may not be joining in because the thread is becoming so monotonic. You can also see that not many Yorubas, his people seemingly, are coming to his rescue.

Please do not assume anything. Do not ask him to Google anything. He might not know how to approach that basic step of information search.

I will therefore answer some of his worries:

He wanted to know if there was any traditional clothing for the Igbos. Yes, actually many but with everything about Igbo history, it was difficult for the white colonialists to understand our ways being so republican and vibrant. Self determination was in Igbo land long before the whiteman came.

So for the cloths:-documented and undocumented:

1. Akwete. "Akwete cloth weaving is said to be as old as the Igbo nation." Vanguard. Read more:
http://www.vanguardngr.com/2012/07/akwete-cloth-an-igbo-textile-art/
Akwete cloth is a unique hand woven textile produced in Igboland for which the town of Akwete in Abia state, Nigeria is famous. -Wikipedia

Akwete is the most documented of Igbo traditional fabrics. It was so sophisticated that the patterns and motifs had copyright as far back as then. Traditionally the creator of a new motif is granted an unwritten copyright. Artiste Victor Uwaifo sang so colourfully about akwaete.

2. Ekete. A loin cloth made of local cotton, very often worn as a day-to-day common cloth. It is spurn from local cotton and is much more affordable than the ceremonial Akwete. It is also used in some sling chairs used by those who can afford it. It is also used a lot by the masquerade cult.

3. Ogodo. Thin strip of cloth meant as inner wear for men

4. Igba. A tougher form of ogodo mostly dorn by wrestlers

Villager don't waste your time.
Everybody around the world knows Asanti Kente and Yoruba aso-oke. You're going to bring some archaic pictures of one fictitious cloth. Oya post ten 2015 pictures of people wearing that rag let's see.
How many people have you seen wearing it in your lifetime? Is it not that George you people wear and that cloth used for furniture and upholstery.
Ask your mother how many yards of that Akwaete she has in her box and let's hear.

i just told you the name of the cloth fellow...google akwaete
Why do I need to Google it? If a big tribe like the Igbo doesn't have its cloth in the mouths of everyone then it's a shame. I'm sure 90% of Igbos haven't heard that name.
The Igbos are always ashamed of their culture. An Igbo man (even illiterates) can never speak his language without mixing it with some broken English. They're so ashamed of the grunting sounds in the language.

That s why lagos, ibadam, ogun and ondo is crowded with area touts boys and fathers.

guy, all ladies that got married to an igbo man, go and check if these yoruba women re still with their husband?
Marriage is easy to arrange but the everlasting practice of marriage is not easy bro.
That s where yoruba women comes to my picture, some that got married to their men do not last long, whether successful, rich or poor. They don't stay in husband house.

The igbo men that got married to them, well I am not saying that it s not possible nwanne, it s but it s hard to see an igbo man married to a yoruba girls, it s o.15% igbos that may engaged in such act.

But I am sure, there re many igbo women due to love or other reasons married a yoruba guy, which I know I can account upto 5% of our girls in the hands of ofe mmanu(ewedu yoruba) for marriages but so cannot be say to their women.grin

My post is meant to educate but I see no education in you, not now, not in future. I will just pass.

Meanwhile, for being the most travelled tribe in Nigeria since far back, you truly believe the Ibos were touring the world in their birth cloths. I won't glorify your ignorance by telling you about old-time igbo garmentry, if you are not able to google it. Ode nie!

I am understanding where the OP is coming from after seeing some of his replies. He sees a village as a rural area that is out of touch with civilization. But what he failed to understand is that most villages in the south east especially in Anambra, Imo and Abia are in the same league with some of the so called towns in South West in terms of infrastructure and modernisation. As for your impression of clothing made of leaves. Its funny I must say but how will you understand when most of you guys hardly leave south west to other places. Life and civilization does not stop and end in Lagos, Akure , Ibadan or oshogbo.

Where have you been to? Why will I go to Igbo land? Am I hunting for wild animals?
