Agriculture / World Food Day: FAO DG Seeks Healthy, Affordable Diets by Opeyemiadura: 2:43am On Oct 17, 2019 |
The Director-General, Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), Qu Dongyu, has called for healthy, sustainable, accessible and affordable diets for everyone. Dongyu made the call in Tudun-Wada, Nasarawa State, at the 11th edition of the Agricultural Show and Exhibition to commemorate the 2019 World Food Day. The theme for this year is “Our Actions are our Future. Healthy Diets for A #ZeroHunger” He said that the 2019 world food day was focused on healthy diets and that eradicating hunger was FAO’s top priority. Dongyu, who was represented by the Nigeria Country Director of FAO, Dr Suffyan Koroma, however, noted that all forms of malnutrition had to be addressed. He said, “the latest data shows that malnutrition is increasing across all regions and income groups. In Nigeria, the prevalence of overweight and obesity in adults keep increasing and it is currently 7.8 per cent. One in three children is stunted and underweight is currently at 19.9 per cent, which is higher than the globally accepted numbers. Overweight and obesity in adults are on the rise and 48.5. per cent of women of reproductive age are anaemic. World Food Day 2019 calls for action to make healthy and sustainable diets accessible and affordable to everyone.” He noted that to make healthy and sustainable diets accessible and affordable to everyone, partnerships were fundamental. He pointed out that farmers, governments, researchers, the private sector and consumers all had roles to play. Farmers need better incentives to increase and diversify the production of high quality food. Governments need to adopt policies, food standards and regulations that prioritise the availability and affordability of safe and nutritious foods. Research institutions need to provide the best scientific advice and push the boundaries of knowledge and technology. The private sector can positively influence the food environment by adapting its product to modern nutritional recommendations. Individuals also need to think about their food choices and eating patterns through awareness and learning,” he said. The director general pledged FAO’s continued support to its member countries in their efforts to make sustainable healthy diets a reality for all. He said that FAO, as a knowledge organisation, would strengthen the capacity of countries to evaluate and monitor the nutrition situation, supports knowledge transfer and provides food standards. He added: “we also want to increase the production and consumption of high-quality foods through investments in agriculture regulatory frameworks, technologies and innovations. Food system transformation requires a strong political commitment for collective synergy and holistic design of agriculture and food chains strategies. For FAO, nutrition indicates health, productivity and overall wellbeing of people and prosperity of the societies. Let us commit to nutrition for a happier healthier and better life. Meanwhile, the Chairman, All Farmers Association of Nigeria, Kabir Ibrahim, has commended the Federal Government for its focus on agriculture in its diversification bid. He further commended President Muhammadu Buhari for the various interventions aimed at repositioning the agricultural sector as well as the recent closure of borders which, he said, was beneficial to Nigerian farmers. While pledging on behalf of Nigerian farmers to continue to play active role in ensuring food sufficiency and food security in the country, Ibrahim pleaded with the government to keep up the momentum. Celebrities / Bbnaija: ‘you Have Poverty Mentality’ Omashola, Frodd, Esther Clash [VIDEO by Opeyemiadura: 1:34pm On Aug 09, 2019 |
Big Brother Naija, BBNaija house was in disarray Friday morning after housemates awoke from Thursday night party. It all started when Omashola could not find any egg with which to make breakfast while others hid eggs in different corners of the house. Esther, who was in the kitchen, told Omashola to stop shouting about eggs and find something else to eat. But Omashola would have none of that as he picked a quarrel with housemates hiding foodstuffs away from the kitchen. Frodd, who has feelings for Esther, stepped in and got into an argument with Omashola. Frodd told Omashola: “Stop shouting and find something else to eat. Seyi hid three eggs, some people too. Stop shouting on just Esther. At age 38, you are not mature, be shouting up and down and fighting for an egg. I will humble you.” Omashola, who shouted back at him, described housemates hiding foodstuffs as being self-centred, adding that the food is for everyone and should be left in the kitchen. The crate of egg was there last night, this morning I didn’t see any egg, all of a sudden they were bringing eggs from different places to cook personally, Esther brought hers out and I asked her to give me and she ignored me Frodd, Esther, all of you hiding eggs have a poverty mentality. They hide food in this house and it is not good. Frodd bring out the food make housemates chop am,” he said. Tony Elumelu, Nigerian banker and chairman of pan-African UBA and Tony Elumelu Foundation has set Instagram agog with a post that shows him sampling and buying roasted corn on the Lagos Expressway. The amiable businessman and philanthropist set the tone of reactions when he wrote: Jollof is nice but some days we sample roasted corn along the Lagos express. Some cravings die hard”. His gesture appears more remarkable because a day earlier he had been a guest of President Macky Sall of Senegal and shared jollof rice with him at the presidential palace. And now in Lagos, the rich banker is behaving like the common Nigerian. Tony Elumelu with President Macky Sall having jollof rice for lunch His gesture has evoked over 139,887 like by noon on Friday, arguably the highest number of reactions by his close to 400,000 followers. Among the followers who joined the over 5,000 commenters were Wizkidayo and Daddy Showkey. Wizkidayo simply wrote: ‘mentor’ with a love meme attached to the message. Daddy Showkey wrote: “Oga Tony you no go kill person”. Many commenters praised him for his simplicity. Politics / Gov, Akeredolu’s Wife Leads Sensitisation Training Against Rape (photo) by Opeyemiadura: 12:19pm On Aug 09, 2019 |
Wife of Ondo State Governor, Mrs Betty Akeredolu, has engaged the services of Taekwondo professionals to train young girls on the sport for self defence against rapists. Mrs Akeredolu said this on Friday, when she delivered a letter to the Commissioner of Police (CP) in Ondo State, Mr Undie Adie, to express her displeasure over the rising incidents of rape in the state. The governor’s wife was on the visit to Adie’s office over the rape of a student of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko, by soldiers at the Ikare/Akungba road checking point last week. She vowed not to treat the issue of rape in the state with levity. She appealed to the Police to ensure that the perpetrators were treated as criminals by prosecuting them accordingly, for violating a civilian. According to her, soldiers are supposed to be protectors of civilians, but this incidence has proven that Ondo women are not safe with anyone, hence, the need to equip them with Taekwondo skills for self-defence. She noted that if the case of a soldier in army uniform raping a woman was brought to the fore and perpetrators made to face the full wrath of the law, it would serve as a deterrent to others. Mrs Akeredolu, who disclosed that she had earlier scheduled a One Million Woman Protest Against Rape in Army Uniform for Thursday, explained that she decided to suspend it so that political distractors would not capitalise on that to cause confusion. Responding, the CP assured her that the case would be treated with all seriousness, adding that the Police have not been taking the issue of rape lightly. Adie assured her that as soon as the Army Commander transferred the suspects to his command, they would be charged to court immediately.
