Career / Career Or Money? Please Advise A Confused Graduate. by oremisussan: 7:53am On May 02, 2013 |
Hi peeps, I have tried so hard to make that decision on my own, but by the hour, it becomes even increasingly difficult doing so. I have been quite fortunate never to have stayed jobless since graduation. There is absolutely none of my efforts or shrewdness in this - I have just been one lucky young man. Before NYSC call-up, I got a job which started with me on a pay more than an average Lagos private secondary school teacher but the position was quite a significant deviation from my desired career goal. NYSC called and I was able to combine both (Don't ask how please). It wasn't long before my pay hit six figures (still serving, remember) with a promotion in my first year on the job. I was able to take up a number of household responsibilities, cater for family needs - it really felt gratifying. But all along, I strongly wanted out. I wanted to pursue a career in core engineering; which I majored in. Now, it's few days to my POP, I sent out my résumé and calls came in. I went interviewing and just got that engineering position. But, like Oliver Twist, it's never enough. This job pays less than I currently earn. Earning less will SERIOUSLY affect my plans including that to take a wife this year (I can, on the current job). Friends, I am three days away from sending in my acceptance to the new company and a resignation notice to the current. Choosing either looks scary and it's getting my head in. I decided career section for this post as I believe a lot of experienced professionals are here; and a good number would have had a similar go through sometimes ago. Please, don't see me as one ungrateful boy. I am only extremely confused. Believe me, if I could , I would release one of these positions to a Nairaland jobseeker. If moderators deem it fit to frontpage my post, all well; makes making a decision much easier. My current boss would see it (He is a nairaland addict) and possibly fire me. Thanks once more. |
Jobs/Vacancies / How To Stop Receiving Scam Job Test/Interview Messages by oremisussan: 11:19pm On Apr 15, 2013 |
I thought my phone contact was immune to job scam text messages until recent weeks when I got crazily job searching (again), my CV would drop in almost every email box that claimed to offer my kind of job. The result are these text messages: You've been selected for a job test & interview on Mon 15/04/2013 @14/32 Toyin Street opp St Leo Catholic Church Ikeja Lagos - HRM8033304 and then You are hereby invited for a test & interview at 15 Adekumbi crescent off Oluwaleyimu street, Awolowo way, Ikeja, Lagos on Tuesday (16/4/2013) by 2pm prompt - 08058874965 I made a big mistake of honoring the first invite. Believe me, friends, it was a TOTAL waste of time. To start with, I would not be allowed to talk to fellow potential preys while waiting to be called in. Any attempt to shake anyone's hands to initiate a conversation led to the fellow being moved away from me. When I eventually got in, some guys and girls I'm hundred times smarter than, said they had the key to unlocking my financial freedom doors - I would have to go hawk some god-forsaken drugs in markets and banks (see me see Babaginda wey cause this job wahala for nineteen kokoro). When the second text message came in today from that glo number, I had to reply with this text: Thank you for the job test invite. I have attended a number of your recruitment exercises in recent times and will NOT be showing up on this occasion. Your offer does not align with my career goal. I therefore appeal to have my phone contact removed from your mailing list as I do not wish to receive any invite from you again. Job searching is enough challenge to deal with, please, do not add to the misery. I know my reply does not read like one from the most angered job seeker but I believe it would do its job as curses via calls and texts should be an everyday thing to them. Moreover, there is power in number, if half of their invitees reply as such every time, they should start coming to realize the fact that the job seeker does have a right to choose whom he listens to en route finding that job. Maybe not instantaneous, my suggestion should be effective in persistence. Happy job searching. 10 Likes |

Has anyone contacted Halliburton's HR to confirm our fears as Lagos hopefuls? At least to know if choosing Lagos as preferred test location automatically disqualified us? Nothing is impossible with these big coys. 1 Like |

Family / Saturday Home Teachers For Your Children by oremisussan: 3:18pm On Feb 01, 2013 |
Many children cannot afford that luxury of 2 days (Saturdays and Sundays) to stay off school works. Many parents force their kids to read on those days. The truth, however, is that most of these children are not capable of self study. We have private teachers, male and female, who would love to spend with your kids 2 hours on Saturdays. He/She will revise the immediate past week's school works with them, prepare them ahead for the week to come based on the curriculum. This is a tried and tested method that keeps every child fresh and ahead. Call 08023639707 Time and venue at parents/wards convenience. |
Webmasters / Facebook Charges $100 To Message Mark Zuckerberg by oremisussan: 1:52pm On Jan 14, 2013 |
Traditionally, if a Facebook user messages someone outside his or her network, the missive gets sent to the "Other" mailbox -- a rarely checked purgatory most users don't even know exists. It's a practice intended to protect users from a spam deluge. Facebook said in December that it would begin testing out paid messages, allowing users to contact people with whom they have no direct connection in return for a fee. Facebook didn't say at the time how much it would cost, but the answer turns out to be "a lot." It was discovered on Thursday that sending a message to Facebook founder Zuckerberg carries a $100 price tag. That's also what it costs to message Facebook COO Sheryl Sandburg , CFO David Ebersman, and several other Facebook members tried, such as Digg founder Kevin Rose. "We are testing some extreme price points to see what works to filter spam," a Facebook representative told CNNMoney. The messaging fee is one of several new revenue streams Facebook is testing out. The company has traditionally drawn most of its revenue from advertising sales, but its latest experiments explore generating cash directly from its 1 billion members. Ahead of the holidays, Facebook launched "Facebook Gifts" allowing users to purchase real-world gifts for their Facebook friends. In October, the social network started testing out a "Promote feature" that lets users pay $7 to broadly broadcast important pictures or announcements. ba7man: On the contrary, it raises my own concern to know that you can't detect the whiff of "sarcasm" in my post. Now that was very "dull" of me. I apologize. I think the Governor is working but typical of a Nigerian politician, in the name of consolidating on first term achievements, they just don't hit that note in their second term. Once again, I apologize. 4 Likes |

ba7man: I still can't see what fashola is doin in Lagos, the pictures are likely photoshoped. SMH for ACN propaganda. He should pay a visit to Delta state and see the great works the Governor is doin there. That you don't seem to see what the Governor is doing shouldn't be anyone's headache. But it raises so much concern when you say these pics you and I are seeing have entered and come out of photoshop. Receive your sight in Jesus Name 18 Likes |

Career / The Engineer's Yuletide Memoir by oremisussan: 1:12pm On Jan 02, 2013 |
Happy New Year, may I say? Can’t say for sure that my head’s cleared completely of residual liquor. Yes, I am an Engineer. And Yes, I gulped eight bottles or nine; I actually lost count after the fourth. It's being a long time, I never had the guts to loose guards as freely as I did this year (or last year, depending on when you are reading this). My care-free indulgence in the act this time was aided by the believe that the crème-de-la-crème in our profession just do get messy sometimes too. I need not try to pep-talk you into believing that the Engineer's task could be onerous and challenging, you already know. What you may not know, however, is that the Engineer sits by one oil well for more than ten years, half of which he is in touch and the other half, out of touch with friends and family; studying some seismic waves, nursing the would-be money-spinning oiler. Many a time, permitting processes and lawsuits to stop production would simultaneously be ongoing, so, the Engineer may not have to stay too far away from the legal team. More than 50 hurricanes want him dead (if he is in the US), his host community believes he breathes money, and so, he is a hot target for kidnappers (if he is in Nigeria). Back and forth, he finally gets his rig up and operational. Alas! He is ten years older. Doubt, he thinks about those wrinkles on his forehead. Off he moves to another well. Again, he is the Engineer; he is to deliver on a massive project - the construction of some infinitely long bridge. His client throws at him seemingly unimaginable challenge; wanting both mind-blowing aesthetics and mind-blogging strength. After which client goes to sleep while Engineer loses his’. That is his job. He constantly races against time. Resources, since limited, must be efficiently deployed. But then, the Engineer delivers again. While client boastfully picks a pair of scissors, ready to cut tape marking the commissioning of his bridge, the Engineer takes to the back role, pen and paper in hand; he is already strategizing on the next solution to yet another challenge plaguing humanity. The Engineer, more than any other professional, just can’t draw the line between job and issues in his personal life. He takes job with him everywhere. Why wouldn’t he? Does he know what he might be doing when that idea will just drop on his mind? That dot-connector clue that has stalled progress for months. Unfortunately, the world on the outside is moving very fast. And so, it suddenly dawned on me, how much I have forsaken myself. Therefore, I had to spoil myself a little this yuletide; I suppressed that alert cognitive state where I’m aware of myself and my calling. I was lucky I was not called to duty at those moments of slackness. Now I’m back. Mankind has me; for another long stretch. I deliberately asked for these much. I am their ENGINEER. scantee: wahoo is really high, most professional training is always expensive, i could recall when i did my fibre optic training, i paid 50k per hour, i spent ova 900k doing that, i wil advice you look for individuals that can teach you, the certificate does not matter, they hardly ask for that, all they care for is if you can handle it, or better still go and do primavela 9, if you can do that well, i might link you up for Ecvaos where such people are needed. I did both premavela & pertmaster in South Africa, is very interesting. Thanks. I will be making a few calls tomorrow to get started with primavera. I will get back to you in the first quarter of 2013. Hope to still find you here. Thanks once again. You may not know, but a few hours to the end of the year, you did raise my hopes and freshened my aspirations. 2 Likes 1 Share |

scantee: is a professional skill, most coy needs professional in those areas, since there are only few people that have the skill, though it might be hard for you to see a good place to do it, because most institutions is more specialised in MS Project. I knew of one institution for Lagos opp Aero Contractors Engineering Workshop MM International Airport, but i can't remember their name. Thanks scantee, you respond almost immediately to queries. Kudos. Yes, I did some google-ing for some Pertmaster trainings in Lagos. To be honest, they are quite on high sides, talking about money. A 200k 3-Day training for a fresh graduate shouldn't be the next thing in line. Or what do you think? |

Nice thread. I am a graduate chemical engineer, expertly skilled with AutoCAD 2D/3D. Not laid hands on any "real" job yet. Hello OP(scantee) and everyone , As expected, the forum serves to raise hopes. Wouldn't mind knowing what opportunity abounds for me in the sector: >> A recent chemical Engineering Graduate (2-1) >> Skilled (to expert level) at AutoCAD Hate to sound generic but I could do a whole lot of other stuffs. Those are my best two selling points, by the way. Thanks |
