A couple needs an advice relating to Tier 2 visa.

Wife got Tier 2 visa with her family, after 2years Husband also got a job with Tier 2 sponsorship. Wife intend to change her career and join husband on his Tier 2 visa.
If the family switches to husband's visa, will the 5year journey to settlement cycle reset at that point? or will they still be qualified for ILR at the end of the 3rd year on husband's visa? (considering that they've already spent 2years on the wife's visa)

I will move to the UK next month by God's grace, Sunderland to be precise. How do I go about getting an apartment in the UK while still here in Nigeria. Is it okay to stay in an airbnb for two to three months while searching for a good apartment? I'm moving with my husband

Yes, if possible.
It is always good to do physical inspection before paying for an apartment here.

If you change job mid-way, the new employer has to sponsor you and your 5 year route to ILR starts afresh. That's the temptation I will avoid no matter the pay involved.

It doesn't, you are just switching the sponsor

Good evening and happy new year, you haven’t been online on WhatsApp since 1st of Jan this year.

I wanted to ask you a few questions, I have started my Cybersecurity self-placed learning already but I wanted to ask if I could do CompTIA A+ training just for the knowledge without taking the core 1 and core 2 exams.

I only go online whenever I see a request for my account number grin

It's a good idea to do CompTIA A+ training, you will learn background information in IT. It is easier to protect what you understand.

Good day and compliments of the season to everyone here.
Wifey, myself and our 1year old daughter will be going to the UK by month end latest by his grace. She'll be schooling in central London and I'm having difficulty in making decisions on where to stay. I heard London is really expensive and it's advisable to commute from nearby towns.

After many considerations and research, Luton fit within my budget for 2bedroom flat, budget is 850£ at max. Now there's so many negative reviews about Luton and I'm not sure I want to go there. Please, I need advise on commuter's town where I can get 2bedrom flat for 850£ and below...thanks.

Meanwhile, we fit manage 1bedroom flat for now and that will also save us some costs.

You might need to raise your budget if you want a 2bed.

Confirm your wife's weekly lecture schedule; considering the wave of the pandemic especially in London, most schools encourage online classes. It is not compulsory to search for apartment close to her school, she'll barely attend classes for up to 3 times a week.

Your budget will get you a decent 1bedroom apartment around Bexleyheath, Dartford, Kent, Woolwich Arsenal and Stratford. Your wife should also apply for student Oyster card upon arrival, it makes commuting cheaper.

Good day house
My 6months + pregnant wife and I will be travelling to the UK in 2weeks time, she will be studying while I'm her dependant. Hope there won't be issues with airlines and finding accommodation as regards the pregnancy?
Pls any useful tips for us in this regards will be highly appreciated.
Thank you

Airlines usually request for a doctors report(sometimes called Fit to Fly) for pregnancies between 28-32weeks at the time of departure, most airlines will not allow any pregnant woman beyond 32weeks to board. You need to find out the guidelines for the airline you intend to board to the U.K.

Thanks Bro the clarification. Greatly appreciated. So in essence you are saying the chances of me getting a construction sponsored job before September is very low right?? Also is it possible for my wife to get a care job in a service home when she arrives.

You should, if your background in construction is engineering related; such jobs are part of the shortage occupations on Skilled Worker visa list. I will suggest that you start applying from Q1 2022.
See link below for further information:
https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/skilled-worker-visa-shortage-occupations/skilled-worker-visa-shortage-occupations

Yes, she will need to register with agencies who recruit for care homes upon arrival.

With all those my note I still forget something.

I think having the kids medical record is as important as school records (if not more). Get their medical record like which vaccine they have had and when. Especially for the younger kids (babies).

This has to be emphasized more here. For those with kids less than 10yrs old, bring along their immunization cards to enable NHS align to the vaccination programme here.

Pls I have plans of relocating next year September to Uk with my husband and child through student visa, and I trying to see if I can just do some perfection to my hair making skills, and also learn make up and bridal hair, because I learnt as a student you can only work for 20 hours and also I want to have time for my child too,she is just 2 though my hubby will.b allowed to work ,but u just want to b skilled such that I might not really need a paid employment job,my question is,is hair business lucrative in the UK or I shouldn't bother perfecting the skill,is it worth for me improve on it or is not so lucrative over there , anyone with experience in that aspect pls advice me ,thank you

Yes.....depending on location. You might want to consider areas where there are more blacks like East London, but school fees are expensive in London, though there are also lots of job opportunities.

It is always a good plan to relocate as a family since the dependant can work full time.

Hello everyone, i need a better advise and judgement. I will be coming to the UK in 2022 for my masters, the enrolment will soon start. I studied Agric. in my Bsc but have been working in IT related fields since i graduated. I will be piking one of the below three courses:

DATA SCIENCE
CYBER SECURITY
CLOUD COMPUTING

I have passion and love the 3 but i only have to pick one and i want to do it based on availability of employment in the UK after graduation. If you are in my shoes, which course would you advise and reason why

Thanks

The three are in high demand, but Cyber Security will easily get you sponsorship if you intend to stay back permanently.

For sure, the NHS is recruiting nurses left and right from outside UK (including naija), how much more those who trained here. There should have no problem finding sponsorship

The catch is that permanent staff nurses don't earn much for the effort involved but potential to earn more if you are an agency staff later on

This is true.....agencies pay more

Every knowledge gathered in IT is very relevant in its compliance, security and audit; for example, I see some people look down on IT Support role, the knowledge gathered in that role can be useful when reviewing Network Access Control (NAC). Your knowledge in IAM stated above will be useful in the information security departments of some companies.

LinkedIn is a good place to search these consulting firms, try to set-up job notifications on LinkedIn, you'll see their openings whenever they are available.
If you are in the U.K, try Indeed, Total jobs, CWjobs, CV Library and so on, recruiters will reach out to you.

For those who want to get into cybersecurity without experience, the article in the link below will be helpful.....

Thanks a lot! May God make your days long!

I do have some experience in Cloud Computing & reasonable Identity and Access Management knowledge - hopefully that would count

For the smaller consulting firms, is there any where i can look them up or a Google search would suffice for a list?

Bookmarked for future reference

There is no guarantee that it will get you an information security job. I have sat on interview panels which candidates with CISSP did not pass and people without made it.
You need to answer the questions in interview before passing.

In fact, because CISSP is so wide, you might not remember most of the things in the book after passing. Have you attended any interview and they are asking for bell la biba or la padula? The fact that you have CISSP will raise the expectation of the interviewers that if you don't meet up, you will likely not be taken.

A lot of people do not have CISSP and they are earning a lot. So I believe that CISSP is overkill for someone looking for entry level information security role.

Ok.

Security+ is also sufficient to get information
security job. So why go for something you are not allowed to use.

CISM/CISSP exam notification results will get you an information security job interview easily, and the experience on the job will help with the requirements to obtain the badge/certification.

That's for cyber security.

The guide I gave is for Information Security, cyber security is a subset of information security.

@bolded, CISSP and CISM are not entry level certification. You can't use CISSP and CISM until you have been endorsed. To be endorsed, you will need to pass the exam and also have minimum of 4 year work experience and
required academic qualification/certification.

Yes you can't use the badge, but passing the exam is sufficient for you to get an information security job.

Ease of getting the jobs / availability
How one can position oneself for a Big 4 job
How one can learn more or get certified in those ISO courses (i have not been able to see much online)

Thanks

Ease of getting jobs - There is shortage of these skills, for example, set up a job notification on LinkedIn with some of the certifications I mentioned earlier, try locations like (Nigeria, Canada, UK and US), you will be shocked as to the amount of job notifications which you will receive daily. The shortage is hitting Nigeria and UK more, due to Canada migration and Brexit respectively.
Search and network with those who have these skills on LinkedIn, their frequent posts & conversations will enlighten you more.

Positioning for Big4 jobs - It requires a lot of hard work and constant research, you need to realize that the career switch will not be a "walk in the park". Considering that you do not have prior experience, you need to start with earning the certifications which gives you a background knowledge about the career you intend to switch to. For example, I will recommend CISSP or CISM exams for entry into information security.

After passing one or more certifications, include them in your CV and start applying for related roles. You might need to modify your CV to include the responsibilities set in the job advert (but ensure you have a fair knowledge of them). Big4 will give you the best of training/experience especially if you can get in at an associate level, however, there are loads of smaller consulting firms/companies that will give you the chance to "kick start" your career switch with little or no experience.

Getting certified in ISO courses - ISO certifications are usually sponsored by corporate organizations due to the cost(training facilitators will require a certain quorum in class), and it's mostly bundled with the company's certification projects (usually a 3yr cycle). In Nigeria, you can check PECB accredited centres and other training institutes like Rhythex Consulting at Ilupeju, A.J Silicon at Alausa Ikeja.
In my opinion, getting ISO certification is not a good entry point, I believe the scope is limited.

In the end, your determination to succeed matters a lot. A friend of mine who has a social science degree is doing well in an IT security risk/compliance role in a Global Bank in the U.K.

Cheers.

I am looking at exactly this - GRC, Audit. Already researched and outlined CISA, CISM, CRISC, CISSP , ISO 27** and CGEIT and what I would like to work towards within 2 yrs in the UK (Seriously eyeing the top 4 even though they dont really pay well)

Can I send a DM if you are in this field or can give some additional insight?

I await your response

Thanks

I will suggest you state the insight you need here for others to learn from my responses, we might also get more contributions from other experienced folks here.

Hello room! My brother traveled to UK since 19th October 2021 (on Tuesday) and yet, he is still waiting for his Biometric Resident Permit (BRP) till now.. Pls is this normal... does it usually take very long to get BRP? Pls could there be a explanation for this? Or was he meant to apply for BRP since he entered UK for studies?

There is a general delay in the issuance of BRP, emails were sent out by UKVI notifying visa holders to expect at least 6weeks delay. The email also included links to validate his BRP status, for various organizations that may need the BRP confirmation.

He should keep checking maybe once a week, he will get it.

I promised to give pointers about tech occupations. Of course there are the core tech occupations like infrastructure manager, network architects, technical architects, developers (either front or backend), automation testing or even some data professions (these require sql, python, r and some familiarity with tableau, power bi, etc). As for manual testing, if you have experience with software and/or UX experience, you may easily become a manual tester (pays well).

Other parts of tech that folks should consider is the security, compliance and audit of IT; these areas are also in high demand as most IT professionals do not fancy career shift to them. Furthermore, a degree in Computer Science is not required to thrive in these roles.

IT Auditors - They initiate periodic review of IT processes, Infrastructure and Security; they are usually required in the Big4, IT consulting firms and companies with large staff/customer base. A professional certification called Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA) is usually required to be considered for the job role, while additional certifications like CISSP, CEH, CISM, ISO27001 LA.....may be required for knowledge purposes.

Information/Cyber Security Specialists - They ensure adequate security of the overall IT infrastructure of organizations; there are several job roles related to this part of IT like Information Security Governance Analyst, Network Security Specialist, Application Security Specialist, Cloud Security Specialist, Ethical Hacker, Vulnerability Assessor/Penetration Tester, SOC Analyst, and so on. Professional certifications like CEH, CISSP, CISM, CCSP, OSCP will be required to be considered for these job roles.

IT Risk/Compliance Analysts - Their responsibilities are closely related to that of IT Auditors, they provide guidance to IT/Security professionals on internal and regulatory compliance areas relating to IT processes, projects and general IT Infrastructure. Part of their responsibilities also involve identifying risk exposures, documenting them and recommending controls. Professional certifications required includes ISO27001 LI, ITIL, CRISC etc.

For those who are not tech savvy, you could consider switching to IT audit/compliance first, then evaluate the possibility of moving to information/cyber security later.

Career in the roles mentioned above is rewarding. I will be willing to provide more information on how to switch to them here, folks can also check online for more information.
