German Coach Says Rohr German-Nigerian Target Torunarigha Can Be Good As Boateng In Defence

Hertha Berlin fast rising German -Nigerian defender Jordan Torunarigha can be as good as Bayern Munich and Germany star defender Jerome Boateng according to his coach Paul Dardai.

Born to a Nigerian father named Ojokojo Torunarigha who played for Shooting Stars of Nigeria in the 80’s, the defender has made giant strides this season, which could spark a war between Nigeria and Germany over his international future.

Torunarigha is reportedly one of the players coach of the senior national team of Nigeria Gernot Rohr is eyeing to bolster the defence line of Nigeria, although Germany are also keen on the defender representing them at senior level.

Dardai who gave the 19 year old his breakthrough this season at Hertha Berlin believes, he has all it takes to be a good defender as Boateng, if he keep on working hard and maintain his focus.
“Jordan is an absolute pro ready for competition, he is always in the right place in important matches. That was so in the youth team. He is a rough diamond, which has to be polished and then he’ll play properly,” said Dardai.

“Jordan can become one like Jerome Boateng. He reminds me of him in his way of playing. ”

Supersport switches off Nigerian League after Kenya’s

By Bonface Osano

South Africa based pay television Supersport has cancelled their broadcast contract with the Nigerian Professional Football League.

The decision means the country’s topflight will not be aired live by the pay television giants.

The move comes weeks after they took a similar decision in Kenya – terminating a ten-year relation with the Kenyan Premier League.

Last year they ended their union with the Ghanaian Premier League, which another pay television company Star Times have since taken over.

Supersport is said to be downsizing its operations in Africa for business reasons.
With dwindling subscription numbers and stiff competition from new entrants like Star Times, Kwese Sports among others, Supersport’s stay outside its South Africa base has been a subject of speculations.

Since the beginning of the new Premier Soccer League season in Zimbabwe, Supersport has not been able to air live a single match despite holding the rights.

They are however active in the Zambian Super League and the South Africa’s

New Algeria Coach To Spy on Man City, Chelsea, Arsenal Nigerian Stars Ahead Of WCQ

New Algeria national team coach Lucas Alcaraz will closely monitor the Super Eagles players at close quarters before the North Africans face Nigeria in a World Cup qualifier in November 2017.

The former Granada manager arrived in Algeria on Monday night and held his first press conference at the FAF CTN in Sidi Moussa on Wednesday.

''We will focus our work on three components. First watch the matches of the Algerian team.

Then watch those of our opponents and chat with the players,'' said Alcaraz to reporters.

''We will also follow the matches of the championship of the Liga 1 Mobilis. We will do everything possible to integrate Algerian football in all its fields.

''As for the World Cup the situation is complicated but we will fight in every match.''

To better communicate with his players, who speak mostly French and Arabic, the Spanish coach said he will have a teacher in Algeria and another in Spain to learn French.

Lucas Alcaraz will run the rule over the players in the domestic championship every month before the World Cup qualifier against Nigeria.

Chelsea Loanee Abraham Eyes Championship Top Scorer Award

Chelsea loanee Tammy Abraham has set his sights on winning the top scorer award in the Championship at the end of the season.

With three games left before the end of the regular season, the England U21 international has scored 22 goals for Bristol City, three less than the leading marksman Leeds United's Chris Wood.

“Everyone has helped me settle here, the fans have too – they’ve been brilliant,” said Abraham to Bristol City's official website.

“It’s hard to describe; I’m just happy to be here and to keep scoring.

“I just want to help keep the team in the division now and then my aim is to finish top scorer in the division.”

If the goals Abraham scored in the League Cup and for England U21s are included in the mix, he has netted 27 goals in total for club and country so far this season.

West Bromwich Albion Join Race For This Highly Rated Nigerian: A Gamble Or A Safe Move By Pulis?

Posted BY Abhishek Majumdar

April 19, 2017 FEATURED COLUMN

West Bromwich Albion have been one of the toughest teams to tame at the Hawthorns this season, but the away form has been far from good for the Baggies. Currently, they are in need of an attacking player who can provide them with the option to score more goals and stabilise their form. Henry Onyekuru, the 19-year-old Nigerian forward can be the answer to their woes.

Reportedly, the Nigerian starlet who is currently playing for the Belgian side KAS Eupen is one of the most sought after forwards in the world and is being pursued by teams like West Bromwich Albion and Scottish Champions Celtic.

Celtic has been on the trail of Onyekuru for quite a long time and even had a £1million bid rejected by his current club KAS Eupen in January. It goes without saying that the Scottish Champions will once again bid for the 19-year-old Nigerian, but this time rivalled by the English Premier League side West Bromwich Albion.

The Nigerian starlet has already scored 15 goals so far this season and has been instrumental in his side’s victories. Onyekuru came through the Aspire Academy in Qatar before joining the Belgian side in 2015.

Reportedly, Henry Onyekuru has been on the radar of Premier League teams like Liverpool, Bournemouth and Southampton apart from West Bromwich Albion.

He is yet to make a decision about his future, which can only happen after the Belgian play-offs.

The Belgian side Eupen has valued the Nigerian youngster at £7million. However, they are still to decide whether to let go of Onyekuru at the end of the season, as he is a player who has been instrumental in all the wins of KAS Eupen since arriving at the club in 2015.

Henry Onyekuru has an ability to take shots on target both from close range as well as long distances. His goal scoring ability being uncanny, the forward is equipped with the ability to make great runs through the middle and can cause trouble for opponents by threading in pinpoint passes for his teammates to score goals.

The youngster has been in the running to be awarded the prestigious Belgian player of the Year. West Bromwich Albion boss Tony Pulis has been quite desperate to sign the player for his team for the next season.

The forthcoming years definitely look bright for Henry Onyekuru. And coming to the Premier League at such a stage and getting the opportunity to rub shoulders with established players in the best league in the world will indeed be an enticing prospect for Henry.

It has emerged that Nigeria’s Victor Moses was one of three Chelsea players hit by a virus ahead of their loss to Manchester United.

Sky Sports has revealed that Moses, Marcos Alonso and striker Diego Costa all came down with a bug after a team meal on Thursday and missed training on Friday.

While Alonso withdrew during the warm-up before the match, Moses and Costa were able to play in the 2-0 loss suffered at Old Trafford.

The Nigerian fullback last just 54 minutes before he was replaced by Cesc Fabregas, while Costa saw out the 90 minutes but failed to threaten United’s defence.

Chelsea expect the trio to be fully recovered and fit to play in their FA Cup semifinal against Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday at Wembley.

Iheanacho Confesses – I Wanted To Join FC Porto But My Father Convinced Me To Join Man City Instead

Out of favour Manchester City forward Kelechi Iheanacho says he was more interested in a move to Portuguese giants FC Porto than Manchester City few years ago after his spectacular showing at the 2013 U-17 World Youth Championship in the UAE.

Iheanacho ended the tournament as the Most Valuable Player and top scorer, and expectedly had offers flooding in for him from top European sides, but a word of advice from his father gave Manchester City the edge in signing him.

” After the tournament, a few European clubs were interested in signing me: Arsenal, Porto and some others. And also, of course, Manchester City. I did not know much about these clubs”, Iheanacho told The playerstribune.com.

“I thought I would choose Porto, because I knew many African players had success with the club in the past. I didn’t really believe that I could play at City because they had so many incredible players. But my father told me that I should choose City because he believed that I could achieve great things there. So I listened to my father”.

He has since gone ahead to establish himself in the first team of the Etihad outfit as predicted by his father, but since the start of the year he has found games hard to come by with coach Pep Guardiola preferring Gabriel Jesus and Sergio Kun Aguero ahead of the Nigerian.

NFF Disagrees With Rohr On Ola Aina – He Is Yet To Commit To Nigeria, But Akpom Switch Is Likely

The international future of Chelsea full back Ola Aina is yet to be sorted out despite claims by coach of the senior Nigeria national team Gernot Rohr about the teen full back pledging his international future to Nigeria ahead of England.

Rohr confirmed during an interview on popular Sports Radio station in Nigeria BrilaFm that Aina has committed his future to the Super Eagles, but a top official of the Nigeria Football Federation, who spoke with respected Nigerian journalist Oluwashina Okeleji says the England youth international is yet to fully commit to Nigeria.

The NFF source however confirmed that the football house has started processing the switch of Arsenal youngster Chuba Akpom , who according to the source has shown more commitment than Aina. He however ruled out any immediate approach for Everton Ademola Lookman who is reportedly keen on progressing through the youth ranks of the English national team.

” He (Aina) trained with us in March. We haven’t applied for his switch because he hasn’t given us his full commitment. It’s very difficult with Ademola Lookman because he feels he is a key player for England youth side. But we’ve made positive steps with Akpom”, the NFF source told Okeleji.

Nigerian Adi Becomes Portland Timbers All-Time Top Scorer, Earns Coach’s Praise

By Johnny Edward:

Nigerian striker Fanendo Adi became Portland Timbers’ all-time leading goalscorer on Sunday when he struck his 46th career goal for the club in their 3-1 Major League Soccer win at Philadelphia Union, reports Comple tesportsnigeria.com.

Adi secured maximum points for the Timbers from the penalty spot, sending the goalkeeper the wrong way in the 88th minute for the Nigerian’s his fifth goal of the season after goals from Darlington Nagbe and Roy Miller had cancelled out Richie Marquez 26th minute opener for the hosts.

The 26-year-old Adi strike saw him become the Timbers’ all-time leading goalscorer, passing Timbers legend John Bain on 45. The win took the Timbers clear on top of the Western Conference with 13 points from six MLS games.

Meanwhile Timbers coach Caleb Porter praised Adi for achieving the historic feat.

“Plain and simple, Adi is one of the best strikers in the league. He doesn’t get enough credit,” Porter told Timbers’ official website.

“I don’t know why he doesn’t get enough credit. He’s starting to get a little bit more. But when you look at how many goals he’s scored and how he’s played in his three-plus years in this league he should get more credit and more respect.

Rohr Will Deliver 2018 World Cup Ticket - Pascal

By Augustine Akhilomen

Super Eaglesteam coordinator, Patrick Pascal has confidently affirmed that the team has nothing but the goal of qualifying for the 2018 World Cup.

The 2013 Africa Cup of Nations champions are top of Group B with six points in their World Cup campaigns under team's manager, Gernot Rohr as they have won two matches, beating Zambia 2-1 and Algeria 3-1 respectively.

Nigeria are next to face the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon on August 28 in an encounter that could determine the fate of both teams.

It would be recall that the Nigeria Football Federation has mandated the German tactician to either qualify the team for the World Cup or face the exit door, something which could put the technical crew under immense pressure.

However, Pascal revealed to Soccernet.com.ng that the team's priority is to qualify for the World Cup and Rohr's isn't far from it.

"Nobody loves to fail in every field of life and I believe Super Eagles technical adviser, Gernot Rohr has a game plan to succeed with the senior national team," Pascal told Soccernet.com.ng.

"We are already top of group B with six points and our focus is to maintain our balance without looking backward till the end of the World Cup campaign. Besides, I believe in Rohr's technical and tactical knowledge to overcome any threat that Cameroon and Algeria will pose in the remaining fixtures," he said.

NEW CAF PRESIDENT AHMAD CONSIDERING AFCON EVERY FOUR YEARS
By Austin Ditlhobolo

Newly elected Confederation of African Football (Caf) president Ahmad Ahmad has revealed that he asked experts to investigate a controversial contract signed by his predecessor Issa Hayatou.

The contract sold off the continental football mother body's global television rights to a French company, Lagardere Sports for 12 years.

Hayatou's administration sold Caf’s worldwide TV rights from 2017 to 2028 to the French media company which is based in Paris for $1 billion (R13‚7 billon).

“The contract was signed by the previous Caf [administration]. Right now there are court proceedings against this contract‚” Ahmad said on The Sowetan.

“We just got elected. I have now put the technical people to (work to) look into this contract. There are people who are specialised in TV and marketing to study this case about the contract.

“We took a decision after a discussion with the previous general-secretary (Hicham El Amrani)‚ and we did that just to protect the Confederation of African football if there is any wrongdoing," he added.

“This is why the previous secretary-general left office‚ and we agreed to it.

“Now we are living in an environment where there must have be transparency and democracy‚ and we have to ensure that the new Caf follows up on everything that is not along with transparency and democracy," he continued.

“This is why I'm waiting for analysis to come back to me before I take any decision. Everyone is completely agreed that it is not a good contract and not good for African football.

“Right now I can guarantee you that I will never sign any long contract regarding Caf," he stressed.
The Malagasy football administrator also stated that he will consult with experts on whether the Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) should be held every two or four years.

“The Africa Cup of Nations is the most important competition in Africa and even in the world it is the third-most important‚” he said.

“I will open discussions‚ and consult the people involved in football‚ including media and officials‚ to discuss if there is a need to increase the amount of time between Afcons.

“I am ready to listen. I am not someone who will make decisions on my own. It’s up to the people," he concluded.

South Africa/Nigeria: Afcon 2019 - Rohr Plots Against South Africa

Super Eagles’ Coach, Gernot Rohr (left).

Coach of the Super Eagles of Nigeria Gernot Rohr has commenced preparations in earnest ahead of their AFCON 2019 qualifiers against South Africa in June.

Rohr outlined his plans for the tie in an interview conducted at the Agege Stadium, where he watched a Nigeria National League game between AS Racine and Warri Wolves.

"We are meeting them in just eight weeks, so we don't have much time. We must prepare very well for that match and we have already set out a training scheme to prepare the team.

"Some of the players will finish their league season at the beginning of May, some middle of May and we cannot allow them to go for holiday for three weeks and later ask them to come to camp ahead of the game against South Africa.

"We have a programme to work together as a team. We have arranged for camping in France and we have been invited for some friendly games, although it's not FIFA window. We have some young players who we need to look at and also some of them that have finished their season in Europe".

Hannover 96 Coach Insist – Sarenren Bazee Shouldn’t Have Joined Super Eagles

The decision of Noah Joel Sarenren Bazee to team up with the senior national team of Nigeria as against the advice of the doctors of Hannover 96 has infuriated coach Andre Breitenreiter.

Sarenren Bazee teamed up with the Nigerian squad for the first time after pledging his allegiance to the Nigerian team ahead of Germany, but the forward failed to take part in any of the team’s training session.

He arrived the camp of the Super Eagles in London with a knee complaint which has been troubling him since the start of the year, and his trip was against the advice of doctors of Hannover 96 as reported by Owngoalnigeria.com.

” He shouldn’t have made the trip to London. That was the period he was due to receive treatment from the doctors, but he left for the national team camp and missed some vital treatment days.

” We have to see how he recover in the next few days because he is very vital to our plans of gaining promotion to the Bundesliga”, Breitenreiter said ahead of their game against Wurzburger Kickers.

Promotion chasing Hannover 96 are currently top of the Bundesliga 2 , and Bazee has played in 13 games for the team, no thanks to injuries and fitness issues.

SOKARI GETS ANOTHER TEAM-OF-THE WEEK SELECTION

After another superlative performance against Esperance last Sunday, it is no surprise that former junior international star, Kingsley Sokari, was chosen to the Team-of-the-Week for the last round of matches in the Tunisian Ligue 1 by the LNFP, the arm of the Tunisian Football Federation, FTF, that organises the league.

CS Sfaxien were held to a goalless draw at home in the big derby game but Sokari put up a brilliant show to further confirm his rising pedigree in the north African country, so much so that he is seen by analysts and fans as the best foreign player in the league.

And as further evidence of his output in the encounter with former Tunisian champions Esperance, the former Enyimba of Aba and Eco FC of Lagos linchpin was nominated into the first eleven selection after all the games of last weekend.

The 21 year-old has been enjoying rave reviews this season at cash strapped Sfaxien and is currently in Burkina Faso for this Sunday’s CAF Confederations Cup fixture against Rail du Kadiogo.

Sokari, who won his first full cap for the Super Eagles against Cote d’Ivoire in January 2015 and also featured for Nigeria at the 2015 FIFA U20 World Cup and All Africa Games for under 23s, is being touted to move to a bigger league in the forthcoming transfer window.

In only his first full season with the Sfax club following his mid term transfer in December 2015, Sokari has had a number of top selections like this, including the one after he inspired Sfaxien to a 2-0 win over Tataouine on December 23rd, 2016.

MFM's Odey Deserves Super Eagles Invitation - Dosu

By Augustine Akhilomen

Ex international Dosu Joseph has called on the technical crew of the Super Eagles to extend an invitation to in-form Mountain of Fire Ministries (MFM) striker, Stephen Odey to the senior national ahead of subsequent matches.

Odey, who has scored 13 goals in the Nigeria Professional Football League this ongoing season, has been snubbed by the Super Eagles technical adviser, Gernot Rohr; most especially during last month's international friendly matches against Senegal in London.

The Atlanta Olympic gold medalist told soccernet.com.ng that lots of emphasis shouldn't be shown on the foreign based players but the local players such as Odey should be invited to the team, in a bid to prove his worth.

"It's really unfair to imagine that the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) players have not been giving a chance to prove their worth in the Super Eagles," Dosu told soccernet.com.ng .

"For instance, look at the exploit of Stephen Odey, who has been firing from all cylinder for Mountain of Fire Ministries (MFM) in the league. It takes a player with great determination to achieve such feat, I mean scoring 13 goals in the league, without the technical crew giving him a trial in the senior national team.

"I am particularly worried because a few of the Super Eagles strikers presently playing in Europe have not done pretty well with what Odey is displaying in the NPFL. I am sure there are many Odeys in the NPFL who have similar fate just like him. Anyway, it gladdens my heart to know that Rohr will be coming to Agege Stadium to watch him this Sunday. At least, it will boast the player's confidence considering the fact that he will want to do his best," he said.

Pinnick thanks all as more world citizens congratulate him

By The NFF

President of Nigeria Football Federation, Mr. Amaju Melvin Pinnick has formally expressed heartfelt appreciation to the Federal Government of Nigeria, the NFF Executive Committee, President of the Senate, Speaker of the House of Representatives, the NFF Congress, Members of the Senate Committee on Sports, Members of the House of Reps’ Committee and several other individuals and groups for their support towards his recent election as a Member of the CAF Executive Committee.

The Member of the Organizing Committee for FIFA Competitions returned to Nigeria few days ago ahead of a special thanksgiving service in Warri this weekend, and to attend to important issues in Nigeria football before heading to the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup (starting in The Bahamasin three weeks), from where he will fly to Bahrain for the 67thFIFA Congress early next month.

“I cannot possibly express appreciation to everyone and groups who gave me ample support. However, I must very specially thank President Muhammadu Buhari (GCFR), Vice President Yemi Osinbajo (GCON), Senate President Bukola Saraki (CON), the Speaker of the House (Most Honourable Yakubu Dogara, CFR), Sports Minister Solomon Dalung, Chairman and Members of the Senate Committee on Sports, Chairman and Members of the House Committee on Sports and of course, the NFF Congress.

Chairman of the Senate Committee, Senator Obinna Ogba was personally present at the elections in Ethiopia.

“I also want to specially thank the Governors of Delta, Lagos, Edo and Cross River States (Their Excellencies Ifeanyi Okowa, Akinwunmi Ambode, Godwin Obaseki and Ben Ayade, respectively), the Minister of State for Petroleum (Dr. Ibe Kachikwu), the Director General of Nigeria Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (Dr. Dakuku Peterside), eminent newspaper columnists, respected sports editors, sports managers, reporters and correspondents and indeed everyone who played a role to see to the actualization of the dream.

“I want to assure everyone that I harbour no ill –feeling towards anyone who did not outrightly give their support. People have asked me about the members of CAF committees who spoke against my aspiration, and I have replied that they are highly –experienced administrators and we cannot wish away their experience and institutional knowledge.”

Pinnick insists that the landmark feat, which makes him only the third Nigerian in CAF Executive Committee, and the appointment into one of world football’s most important committees, will not becloud his vision and that of the present NFF Board to build a sustainable football culture for Nigeria.

“Now, we have a voice in African football politics, and we can play some role in world football. However, we remain committed to taking Nigeria football to new heights of excellence and we intend to put everything into the qualification campaigns for the 2018 FIFA World Cup and the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations finals.

“We are also working hard to tackle the issue of funding, by interfacing with Nigeria corporates to convince many more of them to embrace strategic partnership with the Nigeria game.”

Meanwhile, more congratulatory messages have landed on Pinnick’s desk following the victory in Addis Ababa, the latest coming from the presidents of Egyptian Football Association and the Federation Burkinabe de Football.

In his message, FBF boss, Colonel Sita Sangare wrote: “Following your brilliant election as African member of the executive committee of CAF during the CAF Congress held on the 16thof March in Addis Ababa (Ethiopia), I would like, on behalf of the Football Association of Burkina Faso and on my own behalf to send you my warmest congratulations.

“I am very confident that your rich experience will be highly beneficial to the development of African football. I therefore wish you full success in your duty.”

EFA president Hany Abo Rida, who is a Member of the FIFA Council, wrote: “On behalf of the EFA president, board members and the executive manager, we have the pleasure to send you our best greetings for the confidence of the CAF general assembly and your success at the CAF election as CAF executive committee member.

“This confidence expresses the will of the CAF general assembly, which contributes to develop the level of the game in the African continent and co-operation between CAF and its affiliated federations in order to serve the African football.”

Aston Villa Return To England Without Scouting Hannover Brightest Prospect Noah Bazee

Super Eagles hopeful Noah Bazee missed an opportunity to display his wares to representatives of EFL Championship side Aston Villa last Saturday.

Scouts in Attendance via Twitter has claimed that Aston Villa director of football Steve Round and scout Tony Coton were believed to have watched the 2 Bundesliga match between Hannover and Union Berlin.

Hannover striker Bazee was not considered for the game after worsening his knee injury while training with the Super Eagles in London, and also missed the following game against Nürnberg.

Speculation is rife that the 20-year-old may depart the Lower Saxony club in the summer as he has yet to sign the new contract that he has been offered.

Aston Villa pay the wages of striker Gabriel Agbonlahor and young goalkeeper Emmanuel Idem.
