We could recollect that Late 2017, the super eagles put smiles on a lot of Nigerian faces by qualifying for the FIFA World Cup 2018 in Russia, in amassing fashion. The super eagles beat the likes of Zambia, Algeria and Cameroon to qualify for the glorious tournament. The qualifying team boasts of quality, experienced and promising players like Mikel Obi, Victor Moses, Iheanacho and the likes. The team impresses yet again in a pre-tournament friendly match late last year, with their nemesis Argentina where they won 4-2, thanks to an amazing performance from Arsenal youngster, Alex Iwobi. Since then there have been talks about just how far the super eagles can go in the tournament having to face South American giants, Argentina (yet again), Croatia, and World Cup newcomers, Iceland. Some even argue the team has what it takes to bring the cup home. Rate Nigeria’s Chances Of Winning The World Cup. Drop Your Comments Below? Senator Dino Melaye has reversed his position on the GCFR title to be conferred posthumously on MKO Abiola by President Buhari tomorrow June 12th. On the floor of the senate last Thursday, Melaye argued that President Buhari cannot confer such a honor on Abiola since he is dead. According to Melaye, a dead Nigerian is no longer a Nigerian. “No matter how beautiful a situation is, the law of the land remains the law of the land. Section (2) says ‘ a person shall be eligible for appointment to any rank or holder unless he is a citizen of Nigeria. A dead man is not a citizen of the federal republic of Nigeria.’ We should not be emotional about this,” Dino had siad during plenary on Thursday. However in a statement he released on social media, Melaye says his stance on the conferrment was misconstrued and that the politician deserves the award. Read his statement below For the last couple of days, I have been inundated with calls and text messages from well-meaning Nigerians, especially my constituents, who want to inquire on my exact position on the declaration of June 12 as the new Democracy Day and the conferment of the highest National Honours of GCFR on the late Chief MKO Abiola, *the winner* of June 12, 1993 presidential election. For the avoidance of doubt, my views and belief on the sanctity of June 12 and the place of the late Chief MKO Abiola in Nigeria's democratic history, have not changed and will not. Hence, in my view the decision by the Federal Government led by President Muhammadu Buhari to honour the late business mogul is deserving and long overdue save for attendant legal issues raised. It is a verifiable fact that I have canvassed for this recognition for Chief Abiola over the years, and granted an interview to Channels Television two years ago, where I advocated for same. Let me also make it abundantly clear that while both Chief Abiola and the late legal luminary, Chief Gani Fawehinmi (SAN) deserved more than the GCFR and GCON Honours respectively to be bestowed on them posthumously next Tuesday, it is however important that the right thing is being done in their memory and therefore should not have any blemish in the guise of the current debate for legality or otherwise of the historic Honours as we are witnessing now. I urge the Federal Government to do the needful and display sincerity of purpose by officially recognising Chief Abiola as President-elect and cause the official results of the June 12, 1993 presidential election to be released by INEC since President Buhari himself had admitted in the Presidential Order designating June 12 as Democracy Day, the freest and most credible election. By so doing, the GCFR title will therefore have a meaning. If the right thing is done now by the Federal Government by proposing amendments to the National Honours Act 1964 to accommodate the current developments, no government in future will reverse the decision. This is my stand as a lawmaker. Gist via- https://nairatrend.com.ng/dino-melaye-makes-u-turn-says-abiola-deserves-gcfr-title/

The kinsmen of former president Goodluck Jonathan are now rooting for the All Progressives Congress, APC, come 2019. The people of Jonathan’s Bayelsa East senatorial district have thrown their weight behind the APC ahead of the 2019 National Assembly elections. The people declared their support over the weekend during the formal declaration of a two-time former Commissioner for Finance in Bayelsa State and chieftain of the APC in Bayelsa state, Dr Silva Opuala Charles. Charles declared to run for the Bayelsa East senatorial district presently occupied by Senator Ben Bruce. The senatorial district seat has been rotated among Ogbia, Brass and Nembe local government areas since 1999 on a one-term of four years basis. With that arrangement, someone from Nembe is expected to mount the seat in 2019. The leaders from Ogbia, Brass and Nembe lamented the lack of effective representation at the declaration ceremony held at the Civic Centre, Opu Nembe. They vowed to ensure the election of Charles to attract adequate development to the oil-rich district. Among the leaders were HRH Ralph Canon Sambo, the Ama Dabo 1 of SamboAma, Twon Brass, HRH Otonye Efebo Shidi, the Amadabo of Shidiama, Chief Augstine Okpu, HRH Consul Oluku, Chief Austin Aye- Martins Gboro, Mingi Yai Gboro 1 of Nembe, in their separate remarks expressed optimism that Charles would restore the lost glory of the senatorial district which is one of the live wires of the Nigeria economy. Charles in his address said that the APC remains the best hope to transform Bayelsa East and solve its current challenges. He said it is time for Bayelsa East to get quality representation in the Red Chambers which would be commensurate to the huge contributions of the area to the Nigerian economy. According to him, “We are suffering from huge developmental challenges. There are quality representations in other climes that have brought meaningful development to their areas. “If we profile our contribution against the projects from the federal and state government, here is a huge disparity that needs to be addressed urgently if we must grow sustainability, and I have come on a rescue mission with the theme: Making Bayelsa East to work.” @NAIRATREND SOURCE- https://nairatrend.com.ng/2019-goodluck-jonathans-kinsmen-dump-ex-president-root-for-apc/ 1 Like

@NAIRATREND Justice A. R. Mohammed of the Federal High Court sitting in Maitama, Abuja, has adjourned the trial of a former governor of Adamawa State, Ahmadu Umaru also known as Rt. Hon. Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri and one other, charged with N2.9billion fraud to October 4, 2018. The adjournment was sequel to an application by Fintiri’s counsel, Mahmud Abubakar Magaji, SAN, seeking the release of the international passport of the first defendant to enable him to travel to Germany for follow-up on his medical treatment. Fintiri, a former lawmaker, who also served briefly as the Acting Governor of Adamawa State, is being prosecuted on a 5-count charge of bribery and money laundering alongside Mayim Construction and Properties Limited, by EFCC. He was alleged to have defrauded the Adamawa government by laundering money to the tune of N2.9billion through his naira and dollar accounts domiciled at EcoBank Plc. The defendant was also accused of making large cash payment for the purchase of landed property in Abuja during the three months period he held sway as the governor of the state. The matter was adjourned to today, June 6, 2018 for continuation of cross-examination of the prosecution’s first witness, Ibrahim Welye, former Secretary to the Adamawa State Government, who in an earlier testimony, told the court that certain contracts awarded by the former acting governor, including the electrification of Kirshinga Village in Madagali Local Government Area of the State, had no approval. It would be recalled that, Welye had in a petition dated May 11, 2015 to the EFCC, alleged that the first defendant (Fintiri) fraudulently diverted N497million meant for the construction of a lecture theatre for the Faculty of Law, Adamawa State University, Mubi, laying only the foundation and never completed the project.
