Car Talk / Re: Volkswagen Passat 2006/2007 4plugs. Advice! by ow11(m): 3:38pm On Jul 24, 2014
Compare mileage, cost and if possible maintenance history. That is a strong key when buying a used car.

Since our mechanics manually tighten screws and bolts, I would wager that any part that has been changed out will get bad again. Maybe car parts for the avalon may be slightly cheaper but to make a choice, sit inside both of them on two separate days and you will make a choice.

Maintenance costs post purchase is a lottery with used cars since both cars are nice to drive, the choice should be done with the three factors I wrote earlier

Given that 20 years ago, Yenagoa was for all intents and purposes a typical Nigerian village, this is a MASSIVE progress. It is progressing like all other Nigerian cities are progressing.

Roads built without walkways, lots of hotels, tiny shops with irritating wares hanging outside 'ghettoising' the place. Shocking how town planning isn't a big deal in our country. Maybe the land use act has something to do with it but we need to properly organise our environment and stop all the mega city/new city arrangements.

An existing town can be organised properly and nicely. Not by coercion but by encouraging developments where you want them to be. A start would be encouraging tiny shopping complexes in neighbourhoods to have car parks for at least 8-10 cars.

Vicjustice:
Are you one of those who consider RACE to be only about colours and appearances? cheesy
If that is what you think, then, you only have a primary and partial definition of Race.
Race is not only about skin colour, but it is more to do with ethnicity. It would be a lay man thinking to consider Hausa as a tribe: Hausa is not a tribe, but a RACE.
Racism doesn't just consist of issues of colours, it deeply consist of matters among people of same colours but different back-ground of origin. For example, the German race, the Greek race, the Roman race, Jewish race etc.
Tribalism consists of issues among people of same race, but different tribes. You can not say that the difference between the Ibos and the Housas is tribe, that would be wrong.  Let me enlighten you. Talking about Igbo for instance, it is a race of it's own, and in this race, there are tribes: therefore, if an Igbo person have prejudice with fellow Igbos for reason of his origin back-ground, such issue could be referred to as tribalism. But if an Igbo man is prejudiced against a Hausa man for reason of his origin, this is RACISM.
Remember the twelve tribes of Israel? They were all born of one father, and yet, their offsprings were/are classified into tribes.
Take some examples: An English man would accuse Germany of racism toward them, are they not all whites? Adolph Hitler was a racist toward Polish people, are they not whites?
So, my dear, the problem in Nigeria is racism, not tribalism, tribalism is an issue among people of the same race. What about the Oduduwa race?

Again you are still missing Fulaman's point. The issue isn't a definition of a race, ethnic group, nationality or tribe. The issue is stereotyping! Of course, there are good and bad stereotypes but the negative stereotypes are the ones generally ascribed one of the 'isms' (you can put any prefix that suits you - race (in current American social definition), ethnic group or even hair colour).

The original post was preying on a negative stereotype of Nigerians nay Africans and you didn't see it. Fulaman198 has been trying unsuccessfully to show you and somehow believes he understands the reasons for your missing the point which he attributed to self hating.

Religion / Re: In What Month Was Jesus Christ Born? by ow11(m): 7:21am On Jan 05, 2014
Evil Brain: This is a nonsense question.

Outside the bible, there is basically zero evidence that the historical Jesus even existed at all. Even if the gospels were reliable (and they aren't) they still don't agree on the year, or even the decade Jesus was born in, not to talk of the month. The oldest new testament books (Paul's letters and anonymous letter to the Hebrews written in the middle of the first century) don't even seem to be aware that Jesus was a real person who was alive just one one or two decades earlier.

In fact, some of the earliest Christian sources place the death of Jesus as sometime around 75 B.C.E, a full century and a half before the traditional date.

The fact is that it makes more sense to ask which month Father Christmas was born in than to ask about Jesus. At least we have evidence that saint Nick actually existed and we can be fairly certain of the times and places of his birth and death.

If you want to remain a christian, I advise you to just accept the traditional story as it is and ignore the parts that don't make sense. If you examine it too closely, you might end up losing your faith completely.

*Edited to fix an error.

Josephus the Jewish historian did allude to the existence of Jesus the one they called the Messiah in the Antiquities of the Jews (Book 20) written around 94 CE.. Albeit it was one quote referring to James the brother of Jesus.

Granted that Jesus the Christ was first propounded by Paul of Tarsus and other Diasporan Jews but Jesus the Nazarene did exist and he did start a movement or was at least popular enough to be used as a differentiator decades later when the story of the foundations behind Jerusalem's destruction in 70 CE was being told.

It was a friendly tournament and the only tested stroker available was Martins who had not scored up to 10 goals and was out of form. He needed an opportunity to test out all those Kickoff recommendations Akpala and Ujah. They both failed the test and wouldn't get into the team again.

I suspect IK. Uche, K. Uche, Emenike should make the final squad baring injuries

The south has been complaining about northern leadership since independence , bragging about how well they ( so called educated and civilized people could have developed Nigeria). They have had the leadership of the country for 12 more or less continuous years and all we see is progressive failure and primitive instinct of amassing wealth at the expense of the country. There is nothing practical and tangible to suggest that the south is better or more civic conscious or skilled at moving the country forward. You will grab any excuse to blame the north for southern selfish and blundering leadership. How can you beckon the rest of Africa when kidnapping , robbery , drug trafficking and massive corruption is your trade mark? Regarding Boko Haram are you not surprised and frustrated as a Nigerian that getting on to 4 years no substantial arrest and no definite prosecution has taken place for any BH sponsor? We only have killing by the terrorists and counter killings by security forces together decimating the civilian population with no end in site. The ammount of money sunk in billions is proportional to the absence of any intelligence in the so called task force. You are pretending that the criminal gang BH are only after southerners when we all know better. School populations have been wiped out and high level community heads murdered one by one.We know those who lost hundreds and thousands in their communities and have their livelihood and fragile economy destroyed while an incompetent government of southerners looks on and blames Muslims. What is wrong with the criminal law? Where is the capability and education they are always boasting of?

Very well written.

Why aren't people like Junaid not selling this as a reason why Jonathan should not continue. It seems to me that both sets of politicians are not interested in whether BH kills everyone in Borno. Which is why they distract us with their petty fights and vitriolic statements.

I am sincerely tired of hearing of the blood letting but replacing Jonathan with anyone of Junaid or Ango's preferred candidate is NOT going to end this. We'd still see the same thoughtless bombings, arresting and theft of government funds via security votes.

Pressure is needed to be placed at the foot of the legislators to seek security reform even if it means sponsoring state police creation bill where the civilian JTF can remove these hoodlums with support from the military. The continuous carnage is only destroying the lives and future of the Borno and Yobe youths.

The western model has failed to deal with this mess. Isn't it time we tried an African one?

Abagworo:

Abacha was obviously corrupt and was able to loot up to 5billion Dollars even at that low value of crude oil.

Yar'Adua, Jonathan or any other leader that is not of an opposition camp cannot take that decision because the beneficiaries are the PDP sponsors. Our refineries can function and new refineries can be completed in 2years if there's a need for more but I somehow believe that world powers are behind the inability of our refineries to function because they benefit from our finished products importation.

I was against Jonathan's subsidy removal methodology. which was aimed at increasing prices of petroleum products and still encouraging importation. The important thing is for us to be self-sufficient in finished petroleum products and there won't be need for importation and subsidy with the attendant foreign exchange flight.

1. Meaning he stole almost everything Nigeria made at the time. Given today's prices, he would do the same.

2. Don't buy into the foreigners stifling Nigeria's market BS. Our petrol consumption is pretty low and if the world powers needed a country to destabilise for petrol reasons, hopelessly corrupt India or Pakistan with much larger consumption would have been a better option. Millions of Nigerians are still rural and we consume less 2% of the USA's annual consumption.

3. To be fair, I think GEJ did not understand the potential backlash and he probably regrets that decision till today. The opposition took that initiative and have since grown from strength to strength.

4. I believe he also did not have the best intentions when he took them out. He needed the money to either steal or do some other projects but I do not agree it was to encourage importation. It was to drive some of the importers out of business.

Abagworo: You people keep typing ignorantly. Abacha regime had oil selling at between $9 to $20 per barrel and he was able to achieve so much in infrastructure, imagine if he had 100$ per barrel to work with.

The easiest way to change Nigeria is 1st of all death for corruption, end of importation of petroleum products and the accompanying fraud called subsidy.

Capitalization of agriculture with the money formally used for subsidy.

The fact is that between 1980 and 2001 Nigeria as a whole was earning roughly what Akwa-Ibom State and Rivers State is earning today.

1. Any idea what the inflation rate is so we can back calculate what value $9 is today and the cost of capital projects?

2. How many Nigerians moved from poverty to the middle class between 1993 and 1998?

Nigeria is still as hopelessly corrupt as it was during Abacha's regime. The theory of less corrupt is a misnomer and can't exist as rent seeking and intimidation was at an all time high in those dark days. It would be nice if you tired not to pontificate the fella.

On the other hand I quite agree with you. Subsidies should go to farmers and not petrol importers. This is one of the reasons why I wished Yar'adua removed it. Jonathan showed political naivety when he tried and wouldn't dare it again.

The above is a bold face lie. What evidence do you have to support this story - slave trade does not count.

Nigeria was incorporated in 1914 when Frederick Lugard who became its first Governor-General amalgamated the two British protectorates of Northern and Southern Nigeria and the Crown Colony of Lagos into a single entity. The primary reason for amalgamation was economic rather than political. The Northern Protectorate which became the Northern Province had annual budget deficits, while the Southern Protectorate which became the Southern Province had surpluses. To eliminate the subventions from the British treasury, the budgets of the two components were integrated. In addition, some central institutions were established to anchor the evolving unified structure. The Governor-General organized a Central Secretariat at Lagos, which was the seat of government, and established the Nigerian Council (later the Legislative Council) to provide a forum for representatives drawn from the provinces. Certain services were integrated across the Northern and Southern Provinces because of their national significance—military, treasury, audit, posts and telegraphs, railways, survey, medical services, judicial and legal departments—and brought under the control of the Central Secretariat in Lagos.

For more, read a world bank sanctioned document http://info.worldbank.org/etools/docs/library/5783/State_and_Governance_Nigeria.htm

How much reparations would the North pay the South for it's use of the Southern ports during the groundnut and cotton boom?

Please be adviced that less that 1% of Nigeria's oil revenues in the past 40 years was generated from on shore resources. So what's your point? Can you people swim tens or more miles offshore to claim the offshore territories? una be Mami Water?

1. Territorial waters belong to a state. Even if we pretend for one second that Nigeria as the country owns the waters and hence the oil from it, then Nigeria owns the groundnut and cotton from the North and no one needs any reparation. Just a bitter split and everyone moves on!

2. Now to destoy your myth of 1%. Nigeria first offshore fields only began production in the 90s and according to this, http://www.indexmundi.com/energy.aspx?country=ng&product=oil&graph=production , Nigeria has produced over a million barrels between 1980 and 1990. PSC contracts were signed between 1990 and 1993. How on earth is that 1% given that from 1975 when oil took over as the major contributor to GDP, onshore fields provided the oil till the mid 90s when shallow offshore fields (especially ExxonMobil with less than 400kbopd) began to measure up to onshore production.

3. Until the last three years, SPDC (not SNEPCO) has been providing over 50% of Nigeria's daily crude oil sales. Even if we are to pretend that Chevron, Agip and Total have zero onshore oil, That is still at least 50% of all the money going to the state governments in the North.

So my friend ndu_chuks, The Southerners are not the enemy. We might be lazy but we are not foolish at least not any more. The information is out there. You can choose to bury your head in the sand and continue with the entitlement rhetoric. The enemy has been identified and it is neither Northerners nor Southerners but members of the past military regimes in Nigeria (who are today's governors, legislators, ministers and president) and their cronies both Northern and Southern.

Though your post is filled with hateful and vitriolic pronouncements, you succeeded in pointing out the foolishness and futility of Sam_Ikenna's relentless prescription. Let's hope the biafran is smart enough to take note.

Jakumo, it is unbecoming of you not to have also pointed out that before oil, your economy was sustained primarily by hides and skins, groundnut, cocoa, and other agricultural products, most of which were not produced in the south. If these lazy southerners in the oil producing states have a short memory and remain ungrateful, they will pay for that error soon enough.

One of Lugard's reasons for the amalgamation was because the Northern protectorate was operating a budget deficit and the South was very rich. Since the Crown had insisted that colonies must not be subsidised form London, He thought a merger would still keep the French from owning parts of British Territory.

Indulging you for a bit, How long did the groundnuts, cotton and hides sustain the Nigerian economy post 1960 and how many years has the Northern states benefited from crude oil sales and Beer VAT receipts?

If the south owes the North for years of groundnut sustenance, how much would the north pay back for the use of the ports that brought the much needed foreign exchange? The Northerners should be begging to remain in the union instead of this hostile and entitled slant we see everyday!

I already provided that the female Oduduwa being referred to in Ketu must be Oduduwa's grand-daughter who sired the first Alaketu or married the first Alaketu. Everything else you stated is in line with my posts. For me, it matters where Oduduwa is from because it establishes, for me, the period of his reign. It is precisely why I don't believe the Middle Eastern origins of Oduduwa as held by some Yoruba historians and Dierk Lange. According to the arabian tales held by Muslims in Northern Nigeria and Mali, Oduduwa is said to be the son of Sargon, but Sargon II ruled about 600 BC. Did Oduduwa live for 1800 years? That story has many holes.

For me, the Bini story is most plausible. For the Bini story to be untrue, Oduduwa himself would have had to have been a fraud. That is, he would have had to have pretended to be the lost Bini prince, when in fact, he wasn't.

And Ife is not the beginning of Yoruba. Your holding on to Ife being the beginning of Yoruba is biased because you are from Ife. Ife birthed many other Yoruba kingdoms through Oduduwa's offspring. Yoruba spirituality birthed in Ife. The history of the Niger-Congo language family puts the Yoruba separating from the Igbo, Edo, Ijo about 3000 years ago. This predates Oduduwa.

Can you expand the boldened statement? If possible give a possible migratory route of the Yoruba incl. proposed origins (Rift Valley or Fertility Crescent)

honeric01: The body of a woman represent alot and is a symbol, a woman who has had too many sex/partners is always seen as an unpure/slut unlike men.

Remember that women take in but men don't. women receive and the more men you sleep with, the more "good/bad/rubbish" you take into your body.

Women are vessel carrier, men are not.

Women represent life in numerous ways.

A virgin woman is seen as someone who's still pure physically, mentally, sexually and medically unlike her counterpart.

Dunno if these statements make sense. embarassed

Actually they do not. I prefer to believe the theory that virginity has a cultural context and was used by men in many cultures in the past to confirm that the children born after intercourse are actually theirs and no one else's.

That cultural reason is thousands of years old and that is that. All the issues you raised are fairly modern reasons to justify the insistence or preference to marry/date a virgin. This will continue until such a time that intercourse is viewed in the same light like shaking hands, hugging or kissing. Till then, all women would have to conform to societal norms or risk being ostracized.

Even those being paid 70k a month, the expenditure could amount to a dollar a day...its simple economics,......its cummulative.....not LITERALLY a DOLLAR A DAY

$1 = N160 x 30 = N4800. You would have to earn less than 5000 naira a month to live on less than a dollar a day even if you take two weeks unpaid holiday!

It is actually a lie and unfair to claim that more than half the population survive on less than a dollar a day! Have they factored in the actual cost of living?

Abagworo: If not for military rule, Nigeria would have collapsed. Sometimes I ponder how democracy would have survived with oil being our major source of foreign exchange. Gowon's reign coincided with oil boom just like we have today and so much money was at his disposal to engage in infrastructural development. Shagari unfortunately was hit with low oil price which persisted through the various military regimes until it started rising under Obasanjo 1999-2007.

If I must judge based on prudence and patriotism, then I'll score Abacha highest based on his ability to manage Nigeria with oil selling at $11 per barrel, creating Bayelsa State and construction and reconstruction of most federal roads, stable value of Naira and zero borrowing.

That his fake exchange rate that his henchmen used to do round tripping and bled Nigeria's economy even more.

It was military rule that wrecked Nigerias economy. Their intervention, cabal behavior and tactless behavior caused a social change that we are all suffering today. Bullying, blood letting, voodoo economics, you name it, they did it including Abacha himself.

Tolexander: Exactly what i was trying to explained to the deluded sinkcere 9gerian!

GEJ is a poor president but honestly the OP is filled with untruths. None of us here are politicians and do not need to lie to prove that the current president is doing a bad job.

There are many things he has not done but men this memo is silly since it is filled with lies or did the 1993 U17 world cup hold not hold between August and Sept 93?

If anything, this victory is Maigari's work and whoever was NFF boss in 2010. The guys opened an U13 camp which has yielded fruits. Even though GEJ as overall boss can claim that he appointed an efficient minister, you and I know that even if Maigari's was incompetent, he won't be sacked. That's why I think the NFF should get some pat of the back for fixing Nigerian football at youth level. It remains our league and getting proper kit for our teams.

The premise behind this type of messages is mischief. Actually, Nigeria won two and not three gold medals at the 96 Olympics.

Conversely, we can say that Nigeria hosted a world cup under Jonathan which Abacha contrived to give to Qatar and GEJ oversaw a gold and a bronze at AFCON whilst Abacha saw just one gold even though Nigeria had better players.

The biggest lie in that hurriedly thought up memo is attributing the U17 triumph to Abacha and not Shonekan or even Babangida afterall Abacha only came into power a full two months AFTER the end of the tournament. Also, Nigeria's first world cup qualification was Aikhomu's effort under Babangida! Supporting Westerhof with funds for the SE . They played the last game in October and Abacha got into power in November so I'm not sure how he gets the credit.

It is only in Nigeria people with sh*t on their clothes will claim that their sh*t stinks a lot less than some other person's. Both governments have failed Nigerians and stupid memos like this filled with lies doesn't do anyone any good.

Blame GEJ for his failings but comparing his government to Abacha's is mischievous and downright wicked to all those that suffered at the hands of that tyrant. We do not need these silly lies to remind us that GEJ isn't ruling Nigeria as he should.

Car Talk / Re: 2,422 Killed And 11,961 Injured In Road Accidents From Jan - June – FRSC by ow11(m): 10:00am On Nov 04, 2013
Olugbenger:
pls which over speeding are they talking about?
Is it the one that motorists engage in during traffic jam or on the pot holes infested roads?
It is very disheartening that public office holders can still attribute the major cause of road crashes to be over speeding.
Just imagine the relative number of human lives wasted and destinies cut short by severe injuries.
Worse is that these figures are even official, implying greater havocs have occured just this year alone.
Fix the damn roads and stop giving silly excuses for ur shortcomings.

From your posts it is obvious that you do not travel on the highways.. Yes the roads are bad but how does that excuse a driver going at 120kmh on a single carriage road with potholes? Is that not foolishness and lack of ownership....it is so sweet to blame everyone but yourself when bad things happen.

There are many threads on nairaland glorifying overspeeding on our very dangerous roads and even in Abuja and in lekki, Nigerians continue to die because even though the roads are good, the need to speed is greater than the need to stay alive.

On the other hand, the FRSC needs to put up more road signs on the highways and stop chatting shit....they are Nigerians and are not responsible for fixing roads but they can make signage to alert drivers on dangerous spots on the highways.... Even pothole signs until such a time that the roads are fixed.

...the crackdown however should have special focus on commercial drivers as these are the daredevils that continue to kill people in the name of making an extra buck
