Compare mileage, cost and if possible maintenance history. That is a strong key when buying a used car. Since our mechanics manually tighten screws and bolts, I would wager that any part that has been changed out will get bad again. Maybe car parts for the avalon may be slightly cheaper but to make a choice, sit inside both of them on two separate days and you will make a choice. Maintenance costs post purchase is a lottery with used cars since both cars are nice to drive, the choice should be done with the three factors I wrote earlier |

Given that 20 years ago, Yenagoa was for all intents and purposes a typical Nigerian village, this is a MASSIVE progress. It is progressing like all other Nigerian cities are progressing. Roads built without walkways, lots of hotels, tiny shops with irritating wares hanging outside 'ghettoising' the place. Shocking how town planning isn't a big deal in our country. Maybe the land use act has something to do with it but we need to properly organise our environment and stop all the mega city/new city arrangements. An existing town can be organised properly and nicely. Not by coercion but by encouraging developments where you want them to be. A start would be encouraging tiny shopping complexes in neighbourhoods to have car parks for at least 8-10 cars. |

Vicjustice: Again you are still missing Fulaman's point. The issue isn't a definition of a race, ethnic group, nationality or tribe. The issue is stereotyping! Of course, there are good and bad stereotypes but the negative stereotypes are the ones generally ascribed one of the 'isms' (you can put any prefix that suits you - race (in current American social definition), ethnic group or even hair colour). The original post was preying on a negative stereotype of Nigerians nay Africans and you didn't see it. Fulaman198 has been trying unsuccessfully to show you and somehow believes he understands the reasons for your missing the point which he attributed to self hating. 1 Like |

Evil Brain: This is a nonsense question. Josephus the Jewish historian did allude to the existence of Jesus the one they called the Messiah in the Antiquities of the Jews (Book 20) written around 94 CE.. Albeit it was one quote referring to James the brother of Jesus. Granted that Jesus the Christ was first propounded by Paul of Tarsus and other Diasporan Jews but Jesus the Nazarene did exist and he did start a movement or was at least popular enough to be used as a differentiator decades later when the story of the foundations behind Jerusalem's destruction in 70 CE was being told. |

coogar: Ikechukwu Uche had a disastrous AFCON with no goals and was out of sync with the rest of the team. He was injured and his brother Kalu asked to be left out of the squad after scoring 12 goals last season. Emenike, Anichebe and Dike were also injured. It was a friendly tournament and the only tested stroker available was Martins who had not scored up to 10 goals and was out of form. He needed an opportunity to test out all those Kickoff recommendations Akpala and Ujah. They both failed the test and wouldn't get into the team again. I suspect IK. Uche, K. Uche, Emenike should make the final squad baring injuries |

Why are Nigerians so fixated on using cheats, work arounds and ill-fitting things. From oversized jerseys to patching cars, tyres, clothes etc. Even when a complaint can be made to get proper data plans that is cheap and affordable, People would rather whine about a work around that is no longer available. Complain to NCC like people did and voice costs fell from N50/min to the nearest second to around up to N12/min depending on actual time spent on the call. Ask for a reduction in data cost like the OP is asserting! 8 Likes |

Look at the two parties working together to stifle one avenue through which the citizens can put pressure on them. Blaming scamming for lack of foreign investment Of course it has to be that because plane crashes, politician funded mass murders, govt. appointed parastatal bottleneck, grand theft of public funds, lack of public infrastructure, prohibitive tax regimes for legitimate businesses, inept police force and pardoned criminals are things that are not found in Nigeria. Let them continue. . .The same online presence will galvanise the public to send them out of office. Maybe Mark needs to put a call through to Mubarak for advice. 2 Likes |

nagoma: Very well written. Why aren't people like Junaid not selling this as a reason why Jonathan should not continue. It seems to me that both sets of politicians are not interested in whether BH kills everyone in Borno. Which is why they distract us with their petty fights and vitriolic statements. I am sincerely tired of hearing of the blood letting but replacing Jonathan with anyone of Junaid or Ango's preferred candidate is NOT going to end this. We'd still see the same thoughtless bombings, arresting and theft of government funds via security votes. Pressure is needed to be placed at the foot of the legislators to seek security reform even if it means sponsoring state police creation bill where the civilian JTF can remove these hoodlums with support from the military. The continuous carnage is only destroying the lives and future of the Borno and Yobe youths. The western model has failed to deal with this mess. Isn't it time we tried an African one? |

Abagworo: 1. Meaning he stole almost everything Nigeria made at the time. Given today's prices, he would do the same. 2. Don't buy into the foreigners stifling Nigeria's market BS. Our petrol consumption is pretty low and if the world powers needed a country to destabilise for petrol reasons, hopelessly corrupt India or Pakistan with much larger consumption would have been a better option. Millions of Nigerians are still rural and we consume less 2% of the USA's annual consumption. 3. To be fair, I think GEJ did not understand the potential backlash and he probably regrets that decision till today. The opposition took that initiative and have since grown from strength to strength. 4. I believe he also did not have the best intentions when he took them out. He needed the money to either steal or do some other projects but I do not agree it was to encourage importation. It was to drive some of the importers out of business. |

Abagworo: You people keep typing ignorantly. Abacha regime had oil selling at between $9 to $20 per barrel and he was able to achieve so much in infrastructure, imagine if he had 100$ per barrel to work with. 1. Any idea what the inflation rate is so we can back calculate what value $9 is today and the cost of capital projects? 2. How many Nigerians moved from poverty to the middle class between 1993 and 1998? Nigeria is still as hopelessly corrupt as it was during Abacha's regime. The theory of less corrupt is a misnomer and can't exist as rent seeking and intimidation was at an all time high in those dark days. It would be nice if you tired not to pontificate the fella. On the other hand I quite agree with you. Subsidies should go to farmers and not petrol importers. This is one of the reasons why I wished Yar'adua removed it. Jonathan showed political naivety when he tried and wouldn't dare it again. 1 Like |
Politics / Re: Boko-Haram Attacks Air-Force Base In Maiduguri by ow11(m): 10:29am On Dec 04, 2013 |
ndu_chucks: Nigeria was incorporated in 1914 when Frederick Lugard who became its first Governor-General amalgamated the two British protectorates of Northern and Southern Nigeria and the Crown Colony of Lagos into a single entity. The primary reason for amalgamation was economic rather than political. The Northern Protectorate which became the Northern Province had annual budget deficits, while the Southern Protectorate which became the Southern Province had surpluses. To eliminate the subventions from the British treasury, the budgets of the two components were integrated. In addition, some central institutions were established to anchor the evolving unified structure. The Governor-General organized a Central Secretariat at Lagos, which was the seat of government, and established the Nigerian Council (later the Legislative Council) to provide a forum for representatives drawn from the provinces. Certain services were integrated across the Northern and Southern Provinces because of their national significance—military, treasury, audit, posts and telegraphs, railways, survey, medical services, judicial and legal departments—and brought under the control of the Central Secretariat in Lagos. For more, read a world bank sanctioned document http://info.worldbank.org/etools/docs/library/5783/State_and_Governance_Nigeria.htm How much reparations would the North pay the South for it's use of the Southern ports during the groundnut and cotton boom?
1. Territorial waters belong to a state. Even if we pretend for one second that Nigeria as the country owns the waters and hence the oil from it, then Nigeria owns the groundnut and cotton from the North and no one needs any reparation. Just a bitter split and everyone moves on! 2. Now to destoy your myth of 1%. Nigeria first offshore fields only began production in the 90s and according to this, http://www.indexmundi.com/energy.aspx?country=ng&product=oil&graph=production , Nigeria has produced over a million barrels between 1980 and 1990. PSC contracts were signed between 1990 and 1993. How on earth is that 1% given that from 1975 when oil took over as the major contributor to GDP, onshore fields provided the oil till the mid 90s when shallow offshore fields (especially ExxonMobil with less than 400kbopd) began to measure up to onshore production. 3. Until the last three years, SPDC (not SNEPCO) has been providing over 50% of Nigeria's daily crude oil sales. Even if we are to pretend that Chevron, Agip and Total have zero onshore oil, That is still at least 50% of all the money going to the state governments in the North. So my friend ndu_chuks, The Southerners are not the enemy. We might be lazy but we are not foolish at least not any more. The information is out there. You can choose to bury your head in the sand and continue with the entitlement rhetoric. The enemy has been identified and it is neither Northerners nor Southerners but members of the past military regimes in Nigeria (who are today's governors, legislators, ministers and president) and their cronies both Northern and Southern. This is 2013 not 1985! |

ndu_chucks: One of Lugard's reasons for the amalgamation was because the Northern protectorate was operating a budget deficit and the South was very rich. Since the Crown had insisted that colonies must not be subsidised form London, He thought a merger would still keep the French from owning parts of British Territory. Indulging you for a bit, How long did the groundnuts, cotton and hides sustain the Nigerian economy post 1960 and how many years has the Northern states benefited from crude oil sales and Beer VAT receipts? If the south owes the North for years of groundnut sustenance, how much would the north pay back for the use of the ports that brought the much needed foreign exchange? The Northerners should be begging to remain in the union instead of this hostile and entitled slant we see everyday! |

honeric01: The body of a woman represent alot and is a symbol, a woman who has had too many sex/partners is always seen as an unpure/slut unlike men. Actually they do not. I prefer to believe the theory that virginity has a cultural context and was used by men in many cultures in the past to confirm that the children born after intercourse are actually theirs and no one else's. That cultural reason is thousands of years old and that is that. All the issues you raised are fairly modern reasons to justify the insistence or preference to marry/date a virgin. This will continue until such a time that intercourse is viewed in the same light like shaking hands, hugging or kissing. Till then, all women would have to conform to societal norms or risk being ostracized. |

Abagworo: If not for military rule, Nigeria would have collapsed. Sometimes I ponder how democracy would have survived with oil being our major source of foreign exchange. Gowon's reign coincided with oil boom just like we have today and so much money was at his disposal to engage in infrastructural development. Shagari unfortunately was hit with low oil price which persisted through the various military regimes until it started rising under Obasanjo 1999-2007. That his fake exchange rate that his henchmen used to do round tripping and bled Nigeria's economy even more. It was military rule that wrecked Nigerias economy. Their intervention, cabal behavior and tactless behavior caused a social change that we are all suffering today. Bullying, blood letting, voodoo economics, you name it, they did it including Abacha himself. 4 Likes |

If anything, this victory is Maigari's work and whoever was NFF boss in 2010. The guys opened an U13 camp which has yielded fruits. Even though GEJ as overall boss can claim that he appointed an efficient minister, you and I know that even if Maigari's was incompetent, he won't be sacked. Sports / Re: Nigeria Did Better In Sports Under Abacha by ow11(m): 5:47am On Nov 10, 2013 |
The premise behind this type of messages is mischief. Actually, Nigeria won two and not three gold medals at the 96 Olympics. Conversely, we can say that Nigeria hosted a world cup under Jonathan which Abacha contrived to give to Qatar and GEJ oversaw a gold and a bronze at AFCON whilst Abacha saw just one gold even though Nigeria had better players. The biggest lie in that hurriedly thought up memo is attributing the U17 triumph to Abacha and not Shonekan or even Babangida afterall Abacha only came into power a full two months AFTER the end of the tournament. Also, Nigeria's first world cup qualification was Aikhomu's effort under Babangida! Supporting Westerhof with funds for the SE . They played the last game in October and Abacha got into power in November so I'm not sure how he gets the credit. It is only in Nigeria people with sh*t on their clothes will claim that their sh*t stinks a lot less than some other person's. Both governments have failed Nigerians and stupid memos like this filled with lies doesn't do anyone any good. Blame GEJ for his failings but comparing his government to Abacha's is mischievous and downright wicked to all those that suffered at the hands of that tyrant. We do not need these silly lies to remind us that GEJ isn't ruling Nigeria as he should. 1 Like |

Is that not foolishness and lack of ownership....it is so sweet to blame everyone but yourself when bad things happen. There are many threads on nairaland glorifying overspeeding on our very dangerous roads and even in Abuja and in lekki, Nigerians continue to die because even though the roads are good, the need to speed is greater than the need to stay alive. On the other hand, the FRSC needs to put up more road signs on the highways and stop chatting shit....they are Nigerians and are not responsible for fixing roads but they can make signage to alert drivers on dangerous spots on the highways.... Even pothole signs until such a time that the roads are fixed. ...the crackdown however should have special focus on commercial drivers as these are the daredevils that continue to kill people in the name of making an extra buck 2 Likes |
