The National Bank of Rwanda is reportedly considering the development and launch of a state-backed cryptocurrency.

According to a report published by Bloomberg on August 22nd, the central bank is looking into the feasibility of launching a cryptocurrency that would make processing transactions more efficient. It will also boost economic growth.

The report claims that the National Bank intends to learn from the experience of Canada, Singapore and the Netherlands and other countries that have tested the use of blockchain technology backing a central bank digital currency.

Peace Masozera Uwase, Financial Stability Director-General in an interview with Bloomberg said:

There are still concerns about how exactly you convert the entire currency into digital form, how to distribute that and how fast can you process those transactions. Challenges come in, if technology is down how do you deal with such issues? “We will join in once we are ready.

This comes just weeks after it was reported that China’s central bank digital currency is set for launch.

The supreme court of India has challenged the central bank’s ban of commercial banks servicing cryptocurrency business. The apex court has gone ahead to give the bank leaders time to justify their actions.

The Reserve Bank of India  (RBI) has barred banks from working with cryptocurrency exchanges and other crypto-based businesses since 2018. According to the most recent hearing on Aug 21st involving the RBI’s stance towards cryptocurrency operations, the Supreme Court ruled that the central bank had not sufficiently justified the ban.

Justice Rohinton Fali Nariman of Supreme Court shared severe criticism for the RBI’s handling of crypto business in the country. Fali gave the central bank two weeks to come up with a justification for the continued ban.

According to Crypto Kanoon on twitter the court order reads: "After hearing arguments we are of the view that detailed representations by exchanges purusant to this court's order 17.05.2018, have not been answered point by point, therefore RBI to reply them with in 2 weeks. SG to furnish various docs within 1 week"

"Exchanges are not asking to uplift the ban but they are only asking you to reconsider. If you dont give answer to it, I will pass the judgment."

"Mr. Sood reads out the suggestions given to RBI by exchanges. That Money laundering Act can be made applicable to exchanges as intermediaries making them responsible for reporting directly. or enjoining on banks to make additional requirements for exchanges."

The hearing surfaced a month after an undrafted bill in July showed that the Indian government was considering an outright ban on bitcoin and cryptocurrency.

Saudi Arabia’s Finance Ministry warned against crypto scammers using the official emblem to promote tokens that purport to be attached to government projects.

According to Arab News the ministry has identified a Singapore-based company promoting two fraudulent cryptocurrencies, named “CryptoRiyal” and “SmartRiyal."

CryptoRiyal and SmartRiyal’s promoters are claiming that their cryptocurrency project’s goal is to finance NEOM. This is a smart city and tourism hub currently under construction in the north of Saudi Arabia.

The report cites an official statement from the ministry saying that any use of the Kingdom’s name, national fiat currency or emblem for cryptocurrencies will be subject to legal action from the authorities.

In an interview with Arab News, Dr. Assad Rizq who is a cryptocurrency expert said many scammers' firms are unregulated and even copy their white paper from other projects.

He said:

“They hype and pump their project so the price goes up. Inexpert investors, afraid of missing out, jump in, which spikes the price even higher. Then the owners sell up and make tons of money.

It should be noted that Saudi Arabia is in fact involved in a project to develop a cryptocurrency together with the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

The bilaterally issued digital asset will be an interbank asset named Aber with restricted circulation.

Fidelity Charitable has revealed that it received over $100 million in cryptocurrency donations since it started accepting in 2015.

According to the firm’s annual report, it has received a total of $106 million worth of cryptocurrencies.

The figures show that in 2017 it received over $69 million worth of cryptocurrencies and in 2018 it received $30 million. A company representative said:

We see cryptocurrency donations rise along with increases in the value of cryptocurrencies in the marketplace.

The developers of ZenGo, a non-custodial keyless cryptocurrency wallet solution, announced that the crypto wallet now supports Facebook’s Libra testnet on On August 18th.

Chinese police is taking legal action against token trading platform EtherDelta in connection with an exit scam.

The news was reported on August 7th in tweets published by Dovey Wan, founding partner at blockchain-focused investment firm Primitive Ventures.

According to Wan, the alleged exit scam saw the sale of native exchange asset EtherDelta Token (EDT) following the acquisition of the exchange by unnamed Chinese investors:

“The actual beneficiaries of EtherDelta are all Chinese after ownership transition in 2017 [...] Basically [the founder] Zack Coburn sold EtherDelta to a group of Chinese who later issued exchange token $EDT and turned out to be a exit scam. Now furious investors of $EDT whistle blowed to local police the case was recently taking into official investigation process”

Wan also noted that “FYI Chinese police shows no mercy if any crypto scam involved large amount of retail capital.”

EtherDelta, a non-custodial marketplace for trading ERC20 tokens, enables users to trade digital assets by means of an order book and Ethereum blockchain-powered smart contracts.

Bitcoin hit $13,000 again on July 10th. Data from Coin360 showed BTC/USD hitting $13,130 in early trading Wednesday, reclaiming almost $1,000 in 24 hours.

Analysts had previously warned of a major correction after bitcoin closed below $11,450. Regular commentator Josh Rager is now eyeing July’s monthly close as a significant yardstick for price.

He tweeted: “The monthly close is still a few weeks away but you can't deny the bullishness if Bitcoin can close above the previous ATH close at $13,863,”  as Bitcoin hit $13,000.“On high-time frames it will be clear skies with no price history resistance overhead, only support[.] Countdown to July 31st.”

At press time, BTC is trading around $12,855 with weekly gains at 12.9%. Innvestors have seen 68% growth over the past month.
Bitcoin also regained a share of the cryptocurrency market cap at 65.1%  which has not been seen since April 2017.

Officers with High ranks in the Indian police are to be trained on cryptocurrencies and blockchain to help them combat the growth in criminal activities in these areas.

The Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy which is in the southern Indian city of Hyderabad, a major hub for the country's technology industry, will deliver a two-day course on "investigation of cases involving cryptocurrencies".

Candidates for the training will be given an introductory course on the functioning of cryptocurrencies and blockchain technology. After this, they will be introduced to the legal aspects of digital assets and the types of crimes committed using them. Then finally on how to investigate such criminal activity.

Indian regulators and government officials have become so weak on their quest for a legal framework for cryptocurrencies.

Efforts to impose appropriate rules have not deterred criminal activity involving crypto-assets. In January Indian crypto-scammers stole $2 million in a ponzi scheme.

The global blockchain supply chain market will soar to over $9 billion by 2025 according to a study published by market research and consulting firm Allied Market Research (AMR) on July 8th, 2019.

According to AMR, the global blockchain supply chain market will amount to $9.85 billion by 2025. This is showing an 80.2% surge of the compound annual growth rate (CAGR) from 2018 to 2025. Among the key driving factors according to AMR are the sector’s demand for transparency, improved security of supply chain transaction.

By industry vertical, the retail sector is forecasted to lead in terms of contribution to the total market revenue from 2018 to 2025. The healthcare industry according to research will purportedly see the highest CAGR over the projected period. Other industries following are manufacturing, food and beverages, and oil and gas.

A new survey of 2,000 American millennials reveals that a third of them believe their lives are more stressful than the average person’s life. Some of the contributing factors to their stress levels include—being stuck in traffic, waiting for appointments, and having issues with their smartphones. For 41 percent of millennials, a damaged phone screen is more stressful than seeing a “check engine” light on their dashboard. Many of them felt stress when they got zero “likes” on a social media post, and 33 percent felt having their phone die was worse than a fraudulent charge on their credit card. About half the survey respondents say they don’t feel they deal with stress very well, and two-thirds would love to find better methods of coping with stress.
For most of us, the small daily aggravations of life can feel like the straw that broke the camel’s back, and we all need better methods of coping.

One of the best ways of dealing with trials is saying, “Lord, use this for good!” That prayer will work when we lose our credit card or when we lose our jobs. Paxful Inc. has been accused of defrauding many Nigerian investors of millions of dollars worth of cryptocurrencies through alleged arbitrary account closures. This is according to Punch on April 7th this year.

The report says that the Nigerian non-profit organization United Global Resolve for Peace (UGRP) filed a petition on April 2nd with the country’s financial watchdog, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), which outlines Paxful’s Inc.’s alleged malign practices and their impact on its Nigerian client base.

Shalom Olaseni, UGRP executive director signed the petition which alleges that:

“Cryptocurrency trading and exchange platform, ‘paxful.com’ has been ripping them of their life investment in cryptocurrency by suspending their accounts, deactivating their wallets and refusing to return the value in their accounts to them even after investigation and finding that they were not involved in any fraudulent activities.”

The petition accuses the company of “willful disregard for contract and rules of commercial transaction” in failing to reactivate access to user funds even after purported investigations were found to be groundless.

The petition also claims that Paxful generated $20 million in profit via the exchange in 2018, with Nigerian customers purported to have provided for 40% of the revenue from trades in Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), Litecoin (LTC) and other cryptocurrencies.

A reported victim, Samuel Olanrewaju, told Punch that he had lost access to three BTC worth $15,750 as at press time since November 2018, claiming the firm had falsely accused him of creating a fake user profile, and refused to respond to his queries thereafter.

Paxful has however denied that its account and wallet closures have been arbitrary, claiming in an email to Punch that “all accounts that have been shut down have a reason for it. We will not shut down any account unless they violate our TOS (Terms of Service).”

Tony Orilade, acting EFCC spokesman confirmed with the news outlet that the watchdog had received the petition and would investigate the allegations.

A senior fellow at libertarian think tank Competitive Enterprise Institute, John Berlau, has criticized the United States Securities and Exchange Commission’s (SEC) approach to regulating cryptocurrencies.In a report termed “Cryptocurrency and the SEC’s Limitless Power Grab: Why Speculative Consumer Goods Are Not ‘Securities,’” Berlau claimed that blockchain technology and cryptocurrencies are transformative innovations, potential of which has been stunted by “burdensome regulation.”Berlau stated that “among federal financial regulatory agencies, none poses a greater threat to cryptocurrency and the associated blockchain technologies than the Securities and Exchange Commission.”John argued that the government’s crackdown on the technologies prevents entrepreneurs from experimenting with novel approaches and applications.Berlau further argued that the SEC’s scrutiny could threaten the functionality of blockchain tech if the agency deems cryptocurrency a “security.” John went on to state that the SEC’s regulatory approach to cryptocurrencies could harm retail investors:“Deeming cryptocurrency as a ‘security’ could put cryptocurrency out of the reach of middle-class investors because of the same red tape — both from SEC regulations and from financial regulation laws such as the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002 and the Dodd-Frank Act of 2010 — that has hindered small investors’ access to stock in early stage growth companies.”The report also criticized the Howey test used by the SEC and Supreme Court to define whether transactions qualify as “investment contracts.”
