Education / Remove Our VC, Uniosun Workers Protest by Parrotnews: 8:20am On Jun 10, 2018
Some employees of the Osun State University and their counterparts from some public universities in the South West , including the University of Ibadan , on Wednesday staged a protest against alleged high handedness and abuse of office by the Vice Chancellor of UNIOSUN , Prof . Labode Popoola .

The workers , who gathered at the main gate of the university sang anti- management songs and called for the removal of the vice chancellor who they also accused of corruption .

The protesting workers later moved from the university through the Osogbo Township Stadium to the popular Olaiya Junction where they stopped and sang for about 20 minutes before they moved towards the Governor ’ s Office .

The protesters , who displayed placards with various anti - management inscriptions were members of the Senior Staff Association of Universities ; National Association of Academic Technologists and Non Academic Staff Union.

They accused the Popoola led- management of buying a Sport Utility Vehicle worth N69m for the Chairman of the UNIOSUN Governing Council, Mallam Yusuf Ali ( SAN ), while refusing to accede to the legitimate demands of the workers .

The Chairman of UNIOSUN SSANU , Mr Lekan Adiat , and his NASU colleague , Mr Isaiah Fayemi , called for the removal of the VC and asked the Governing Council to make public the report of Prof . Solomon Akinboye panel which probed the allegations against the VC.

Adiat said , “ We demand the official release of Prof . Solomon Akinboye - led committee ’ s report to the public.

“We demand the immediate dissolution of the compromised Governing Council, led by Mallam Yusuf Ali (SAN ).

“We also demand the removal of the Vice Chancellor , Prof . Labode Popoola in view of his act of gross misconduct and abuse of office and abuse of trust. ”

The workers had last week staged a similar protest against the VC based on the invitation of some of the union leaders to appear before the Staff Disciplinary Committee.

The vice chancellor of the university had said the union leaders were angry because he had blocked the ways through which they were allegedly stealing from the system .

The VC said , “ For how long will the Nigerian media celebrate the shenanigans of these unscrupulous few ? If you care to know , UNIOSUN workers are not fighting me .

We are dealing with a bunch of self -serving individuals trying to evade disciplinary process , and now hiding under unionism .

“They wrote a spurious petition against me in an attempt to evade disciplinary action on fraud some of them committed before I became the VC. I was investigated and exonerated because the allegations were baseless .

“They still want their lies to be taken as the truth . Please do an investigative journalism about the rot we are fighting at UNIOSUN , which these characters who have no business being in a university are resisting.
Education / We Were Fed With Dried Garri And Egusi Water In Prison - OAU Five by Parrotnews: 7:40am On Jun 10, 2018
I had earlier decided not to share some of my prison experience, but I gave it another thought, just to express the cruelty and hypocrisy of the state. I will be talking about some of the experience with time.

https://www.parrotnews.com.ng/2018/06/we-were-fed-with-dried-garri-and-egusi.html

While I was in the prison. Among many terrible food, I remember with sharp disgust how we were fed with dry Garri with egusi water. I did not call it soup because the the ratio of the water to egusi was around 95:5; no salt, no oil, pepper or any other thing added, and it smelled like spoilt egg.

They would serve that consistently every evening. Evey morning, you get Garri and grey-coloured beans with no ingredient added except stones(i think it is always deliberate).

I remember Fela's lyrics, "the time wey I dey inside prisons I call am inside world"

You see, the prison, like every other state apparatus, has always been there to further repress the oppressed while the oppressors, political thieves, corrupt VCs et all, those who have consistently diverted billions and millions of public funds for personal gains, are alienated from such incarceration.

The masses will decide the fate for their freedom when #WeAreNotTooDullToChallenge the status quo.

Education / Great Ife Students' Union Action Committee Congratulates Newly Matriculated Stud by Parrotnews: 6:10pm On Jun 05, 2018
We use this medium to welcome the matriculating students of Obafemi Awolowo
University into another academic phase. We wish you success in your academic
pursuits on campus and we remain hopeful that your generation would be a
fulcrum of redemption to the university and nation at large.

From the little experience you must have garnered during your brief stay on
campus; it must have occurred to you, the need for an urgent response to a lot of
crises and shortcomings within the university system, which pose a threat to our
collective interest on campus. As proven by historical precedence, periodic crisis
are peculiar to each generation of students and they ought to be intellectually
combated by organized union structure.
However, we must admit that the challenges of our generation are unprecedented
and huge. It has never been the case that a larger nu mber of fresh students would
be unable to secure accommodation on campus but, unfortunately, this is the current situation.
The lack of accommodation on campus has deprived our dear freshmen of their
comfort and security. Also, we are aware of the heavy exploitations,
transportation challenges, security challenges and most especially , sexual
harassment that is being perpetrated in town, which also raises its ugly face on
campus as well. We make bold to assert that the Action Committee alongside the
mass of students and most importantly the fresh students- remains resolute in
making sure that such ugly situations is brought to an end.

We must however inform you that the genesis of the present crisis faced by students is the persistent attack on the students’ union by the administration
which in turn also gave chance cruel accommodation policy imposed by the university management. This policy has driven the mass of students outside
campus, hence, resulting in a lot of grotesque developments. As Intellectual
Fighters for Emancipation (IFE), ours is not to lament but to proffer solutions to
the oppressive problems endangering the survival of our generation .

It is ever more glaring that the attacks on the organization of students personified
in the Students union has more than given university administration a free ride in
oppressing students and turning the school more and more into a business
enterprise even when vital facilities such as the university health center continues
to suffer from ill-equipment and dwindling number of staff as well as hostel
structures in inhabitable and pitiable conditions for undergraduates.
We have carefully highlighted with explanations, some of the major factors that
are crucial to our existence on campus;

CURRENT CRISES ON OAU CAMPUS

 Accommodation crisis: It is pertinent to state that the primary essence of
residing on campus is to guarantee the adequate security and welfare of
students during their study in this great institution. Also, despite the annual
increase in the number of admitted students, the management has not deemed
it fit to expand the carrying capacity of the facilities while the existing
structures have been left unattended to. It is however an undeniable fact that
the university has enough land and material resources for the construction of
more hostel facilities. Yet, expensive private hostels are now built in areas offcampus such as Parakin area, Ile-Ife by the university management with
university public funds, in a bid to keep exploiting our freshmen withy
exorbitant house rents.

 With logical deductions from the previous analysis, it is obvious that the
accommodation policy is nothing but a disguise by the university management
to enrich their pockets by exploiting students who were given no choice but to
seek private hotels owned by lecturers outside campus.

Transportation crisis: As stated earlier in the preamble, the transportation
crisis is one of the logical consequences of the accommodation policy. The
mass of students, which have always resided on campus are now residing
outside campus and this has led to the transportation crisis in which untimely
availability of commercial bus and unavailability of bus in most cases. This
transportation crisis is the reason many students miss lectures and attendance
which will be catastrophic in times of tests and exams because of the transportation crisis. Factually speaking, we make bold to assertions that the
only viable solution to the accommodation crisis can only be solved by the
construction of more hostels on campus.

 *Security:* As we all know, the students security has can only be achieved
through a collective consciousness and mass of students. We must not forget
that the recent accommodation policy which has driven the mass of students
outside campus poses a lot of security threats to all students (who reside inside
and outside campus). Already, there are symptoms indicating the rise of
cultism on campus. More so, this is not stated to imbibe us with fears but a
call for radical response to curb the growing wings of cultism on campus. As it is now the town-dwelling students face constant security threats of burglary,
rape, ethnic/street clashes and cult attacks and influence as students of our
great university mix with cyber-criminals and political thugs from other
institutions

 *OAU5 court case:* The five students, who were victimized by the
management for resisting the eviction of Moremi hall students and the mutilation of their property, are still in court and we implore you to join us as we go to Ife high court on the 14th of June, 2018 and any other day if adjourned.

SOLUTIONS TO THESE AFOREMENTIONED CRISES

 Students must organize: The only way to achieve any victory is to
organize regardless of our divergent backgrounds and interests and play
active part in union activities and unionism as a practice. It is only with our
collective intellect, strength and voice that our present problems will be
resolved.

 A popular congress must be held: In OAU, egalitarianism remains the
culture and in order to make sure everyone is carried along, a popular
congress will have to resolve on pertinent matters affecting the union. This,
students must prepare for and participate.
The Students’ union building must be liberated: As long as the SUB is
still under restriction, the accommodation policy cannot be overcome.
Before the management could evict students from their halls of residences,
they had to firstly, evict unionists from their sacred abode, the students
union building.

 We must initiate a national campaign against underfunding of
education: One of the reasons we are facing accommodation crisis on
campus is because of the underfunding of Nigeria’s educational sector and
the best way to eradicate all institutional mishaps in Ni gerian universities is
to campaign against the underfunding and proper monitoring of funds being
disbursed to the education sector to avoid mismanagement of funds in
institutions.

Once again, we congratulate you on your successful matriculation and implore
you to always join the gathering of your union, brethren.

ALUTA CONTINUA VICTORIA ASCERTA!

ACTION COMMITTEE

Education / Golden Advice To Newly OAU Matriculated Students by Parrotnews: 5:28pm On Jun 05, 2018
With a deep sense of felicitation, let me seize this medium to welcome the entirety of Great Ife freshers to this great citadel of learning situated in the heartbeat of Yoruba race; Ancient city of Ile-Ife where the dawn of the day was first experienced. I congratulate you all on this matriculation day and I pray that you all witness your convocation day with happiness as you witness this matriculation day.

It's an undisputable fact that many students choose this great institution for different reasons, some choose this citadel of learning because of its reputation, perhaps of the historical deeds of her predecessors, may be because it was adorned as the most beautiful Africa campus or could it be because of the quality of her scholars or because of her high level of intellectualism and political consciousness amongst many others. No matter how divergent our reasons could be for choosing Great Ife as one of the best institutions in Nigeria, we all have the same primary objective of being here, which is to acquire and explore the best academic excellence in our diverse fields. Thus, let me quickly draw our attention to certain steps and methods towards our journey on the path of achieving great success on this campus.

After the aforementioned, let me quickly say this, at the beginning of this fresh session, students must have been eavesdropping here and there that OAU is read to get “F”, yes it is true based on your own perspective, also true if you consider it to be true and vice versa. There is an adage that goes thus "If you really want to do something, you will find a way, if you don't, you will find an excuse".

At least, we have seen graduates of this school who graduated with minimum of 2 B”s. In fact, there are speculations of a student who graduated with 5.0, his name is Anthony Olusegun Adegbulugbe, though not totally confirmed. The summary here is that it is very possible and realistic to graduate with first class irrespective of your course in this prestigious university.

Apparently, almost all departments have the record of first class graduates. If someone can, who said you can't? The journey might seem difficult and impossible, but the truth is that, nothing is impossible even the word impossible says I'm possible if we put an apostrophe after I. So, if you can put more and more effort, an impossibility will come to reality. That's the fact, believe it or not, decision lies in your hand.

Now, let's delve into the aim of this write up.

The first and the most crucial way to survive on this campus is to read before the exam. One should learn how to overcome procrastination which is the thief of time. If you are the type who used to compile notes till the day they announced test or till when they release exam timetable, before a blink of an eye, you will then realize that your note has turned to voluminous. You will struggle to finish all the chapters you have been taught but trust me, once they release your results, you will testify that indeed OAU is read to get F except if you are a genius or an extraordinary student.

If your reading starts from the day of your first lecture, smile will be on your face once you see your results.
Let me share you an interesting story of a graduate who graduated two sessions ago with over 4.9 CGPA. His name is Ahmod Quadri, he graduated in the department of Economics, faculty of Social Science. He broke the record of 4.86 highest so far and set the record of the first person who has highest CGPA of over 4.9 in both the department of Economics and faculty of Social Science in the history of OAU.

When I quizzed him on how he achieved that, he simply answered me that he only make sure that he reads all the courses taught in a particular day before the next class. He said he would read to the extent that he would be able to answer any questions being asked in the next class. He assured me that anyone who imbibes in that idea would have minimum of 4.5 GPA and that's first class.

Just imagine one who compiles note till the day of test or till when they release exam timetable and eventually becomes sick during test/exam period and unable to read, if such person manage to write exam, he will only count the number of fans in the exam hall.
So, one should start reading not during test/exam period but before test/exam period.

Albeit, the ultimate message is not to relent when you don't meet up with your expectations. Imagine someone who reads night and day and later had C in a particular course now depressed and reduced his/her reading time. That particular person might later end up having something less than C which is either D, E or F. So, if you don't meet up with your expectations, all you have to do is to just restrategise, identify your mistakes and make a reasonable solution. So, if you don't meet up with your expectations don't give up but put in more effort.

Furthermore, it is worthy of advice not to depend only on what you have been taught in the class, download both textbooks and lecture videos online. To download textbooks online, just write the name of the text book with the author name and end it up with pdf. For example, to download Intermediate Micro Economics Analysis by H.R Varian, just type it on Google the keyword "Download Intermediate Micro Economics Analysis by H.R Varian pdf" it will appear on the first page of your browser then, click on the one you want to download. Likewise to download lecture videos on YouTube, go to YouTube and search for your desired topics for example, search for "Demand and Supply" it will show you hundreds of videos, click on any of your choice, it will direct you to another page, then, edit the website on your address bar by adding 'ss' before the address i.e if the website is youtube. com/... then, edit it to ssyoutube. com/...
Your browser will direct you to where to download the video.

I'll indulge you to participate in team work whereby you will be able to rub mind together. Everyone can't know everything but in group, we can make it happen. _Many ideas grow better when transplanted into another mind than the one where they sprang up._ - Oliver Wendell Holmes.

Avoid friends that don't add value to your life and don't leave friends who contribute to your life. Choose your friends wisely.

For the average students, don't joke with tutorials even if it is fix at your inconvenient time and there's no other alternative, try to attend tutorial that will help you in your "nightmare" course.

Try to figure out yourself and don't compare your reading time table with someone else. Know the exact time you assimilate well when you are studying. If you are a type that can't joke with your sleep, then, don't force yourself to read overnight. Get the exact time you comprehend your reading.

Once again, I wish you happy matriculation and you can as well invite me to your matric celebrations as a specialist in Matric rice-eating.
