Emmanuel Nwude is a Nigerian advance-fee fraud artist. He is known for defrauding Nelson Sakaguchi, a Director at Brazil's Banco Noroeste based in São Paulo, of $242 million, $191 million in cash and the remainder in the form of outstanding interest, between 1995 and 1998.
His accomplices were Emmanuel Ofolue, Nzeribe Okoli, and Obum Osakwe, along with the husband and wife duo, Christian Ikechukwu Anajemba and Amaka Anajemba, with Christian later being assassinated. After Nick Leeson's trading losses at Barings Bank, and the looting of the Iraqi Central Bank by Qusay Hussein, the crime was the third largest in banking history.
After a large-scale attack on a town in Nigeria in August 2016, Nwude was alleged to be a ringleader and was arrested on murder charges. He remains in custody.
Nwude was a former director of Union Bank of Nigeria and this position made him privy to some links, information and documents that other persons would not be aware of. He impersonated the then governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Paul Ogwuma, and connected with Sakaguchi enticing him with a mouth-watering deal of Nigeria’s plan to build an airport in Abuja.
Nwude impersonated Paul Ogwuma, then Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, and successfully convinced Sakaguchi to "invest" in a new airport in the nation's capital, Abuja, in exchange for a $10 million commission. In August 1997, the Spanish Banco Santander wanted to take over the Banco Noroeste Brazil.
The fraud was uncovered after a December 1997 joint board meeting, in which an official from Santander inquired about why a large sum of money, two-fifths of Noroeste's total value and half of their capital, was sitting in the Cayman Islands unmonitored. This led to criminal investigations in Brazil, Britain, Nigeria, Switzerland, and the United States.

Chevron Corporation has reported earnings of $3.7 billion ($1.95 per share – diluted) for fourth quarter 2018, compared with $3.1 billion ($1.64 per share – diluted) in the fourth quarter of 2017, which included $2.02 billion in tax benefits related to U.S. tax reform.
Total disclosed that included in the current quarter was an asset write-off totalling $270 million, adding that foreign currency effects increased earnings in the 2018 fourth quarter by $268 million.
Full-year 2018 earnings were $14.8 billion ($7.74 per share – diluted), compared with $9.2 billion ($4.85 per share – diluted) in 2017.
In a statement obtained by Vanguard, Chevron stated: “Included in 2018 were impairments and other charges of $1.59 billion and a gain on an asset sale of $350 million. Foreign currency effects increased earnings in 2018 by $611 million.

The duo of the Academic Staff Union of Universities and the Federal Government seem to be in what some people may term a relationship. This is as a result of the series of meetings (dates) they've been having on how to resolve the impasse over the two-month-old strike embarked upon by lecturers.
Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi, National President of ASUU, had confirmed yesterday that the Academic Staff Union of Universities and the Federal Government will be meeting today 21st January 2018.
He, however, said the union was not optimistic about the prospects of an early resolution of the industrial dispute.
In response to a question on whether there had been any fresh development with regard to the resolution of the dispute, Ogunyemi said, “I’ am afraid nothing new. I understand they will be meeting us on Monday. Let’s wait and see if they take a reasonable step; it will determine our next line of action. Until then, let’s wait and see.”

As U.S. rates of marijuana use continue to rise, workers who use marijuana may be at higher risk of losing their jobs.
Job loss may be an overlooked social cost of marijuana use, according to the new research by Cassandra A. Okechukwu, ScD, MSN, of Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and colleagues published in January’s Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine.
They analyzed nationally representative data from about 22,000 respondents to a 2001-02 survey, with follow-up in 2003-04; and 21,439 respondents to a 2012-13 survey. Analyses were limited to participants who were employed or actively seeking work.
The percentage of workers who reported using marijuana in the past year increased from about 4.50 percent in 2001-02 to 10.25 percent in 2012-13. The percentage meeting DSM-IV diagnostic criteria for marijuana use disorder increased from 1.2 to 2.6 percent.
Overall, marijuana users were more likely to experience involuntary job loss: being fired or laid off. With adjustment for other factors, workers who reported marijuana use in 2001-02 had 27 percent higher odds of losing their jobs in 2003-04. In the 2012-13 survey, the odds of job loss were 50 percent higher for workers reporting marijuana use.
In both surveys, daily marijuana use was associated with increased odds of job loss. The 2012-13 data also found higher odds of job loss for workers who used marijuana weekly or monthly.
The relationship between marijuana use and job loss was unaffected by race/ethnicity, but was significantly modified by income. Overall, marijuana use was linked to increased odds of job loss in both the highest and lowest income categories. The lingering strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has caused a breakdown in the academic activities in both Federal and State Universities across the country.
A lthough there have been series of meetings between the Federal Government and the Union, the strike has still persisted. The latest update on the strike which the Union says is necessary to press on their demand is from the Minster of education, Mallam Adamu Adamu.
The Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu has reportedly assured Nigerian students that the ongoing ASUU strike would soon be suspended.
Adamu while speaking at the 10th convocation ceremony of the Federal Polytechnic Offa, Kwara State on Thursday, January 17, 2018, appealed to the striking lecturers to be patient with the Federal Government saying the ''strike will soon be called off.''
Meanwhile, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has asked the Federal Government to release N50b to show its commitment to the agreement on revitalization of public universities.

Prof. Chukwunonso Ejike, a researcher at Alex Ekwueme Federal University, Ndufu-Alike, Ebonyi, says he has developed a local remedy for diabetes mellitus.
He made this known in an interview with News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday on the sidelines of the ongoing Technology and Innovation Expo 2019 holding in Enugu.
Diabetes mellitus is a disease in which the body’s ability to produce or respond to the hormone insulin is impaired, resulting in abnormal metabolism of carbohydrates and elevated level of glucose (sugar) in the blood.
Organised yearly by Federal Ministry of Science and Technology to encourage interaction among researchers, inventors, innovators and investors, the Science and Technology Expo is to largely commercialise research results from the country’s tertiary institutions.
The theme for the 2019 expo is “Science, Technology and Innovation for Economic Recovery and Sustainable Growth.”
Ejike said that the remedy product known as the VOG Tea was one of six products exhibited by the university at the Expo, invented in 2018 after four years of intensive research.
The don, who is the Dean, Basic Medical Sciences in the institution, said that the tea was produced from three culinary vegetables, noting that the process of patenting the product had already begun and would soon be in the market.
He added that “I thank the university authority for supporting every effort so far made to develop and produce the tea.
