Politics / Dapchi Parents Stoned State Governor by paulexchester: 1:29pm On Mar 27, 2018
“People like me stoned the governor’s convoy because he lied to us when he knew how terrible we were feeling. I’ll never regret stoning him.” The father of five; one boy and four girls said

Also speaking, Manzo, the chairman of the victim’s parents said he felt something bad was going to happen to his child. “I felt somehow throughout the day. I knew something bad was going to happen to me. But I prayed to God to protect me from evil and other bad things” he said as it turned out that his daughter, Fatima, was abducted as she went to fetch water to break her fast that evening.

Following release of the abducted girls, parents of the college has been divided on deliberating whether or not to allow their children back to the school despite assurance by the government that the school was now safe.

Meanwhile Rakiya Adamu, SS2, who was lucky to have escaped during the abduction of her friends and schoolmates, had vowed not to return to the school.

Phones / Facebook Collects Call, Text Data From Android Users by paulexchester: 9:42am On Mar 27, 2018
Facebook acknowledged on Sunday, that for years it has been collecting the call and text history of users who own Android phones. It says it has been doing so with user’s permission, but it’s not that simple.

People who explicitly “opted in” to allowing Facebook to harvest their cell phone data did so by agreeing to let the company import their phone contacts so they could use Messenger or Facebook Lite on Android phones but it was not obvious to many users that they were agreeing to have their cell phone records logged when they agreed to import their contacts to use those apps on their Android phones.

The company defended itself by explaining that “people have to expressly agree to use” the opt-in feature for importing their contacts on Messenger or Facebook Lite to allow Facebook to collect the cell phone data, but Sunday’s statement is the first time the social media company actually spelled out that practice in clear terms for users.

Health / 300 Million Hepatitis B Sufferers But Only One In 20 Treated- Study by paulexchester: 9:12am On Mar 27, 2018
Some 300 million people worldwide are living with the deadly hepatitis B virus (HBV), but only one in 20 received adequate treatment, researchers reported Tuesday.

For expectant mothers carrying the virus — which can be transmitted to their children — that percentage drops to one in 100, they reported in The Lancet Gastroenterology & Hepatology medical journal.

If left untreated, HBV can cause serious diseases of the liver, including cancer.

An estimated 600,000 people die every year from hepatitis-B related liver diseases, making HBV a bigger killer than malaria.

A test for HBV has been available since the early 1970s, but only one in ten sufferers worldwide have been diagnosed.

The virus is highly contagious via infected blood or other body fluids and is mainly transmitted from mothers to their infants, or between children.

There is no cure, but antiviral drugs have proven effective in coping with symptoms.

Crime / 20 Years Jail Term For Cultism In Bayelsa by paulexchester: 8:59am On Mar 27, 2018
On Monday, The Bayelsa State governor, Mr Gov Seriake Dickson signed the Secret Cult, Societies and Similar Activities Prohibition Amendment Law 2018 as a new system to curb the menace of cultism in Bayelsa state. The new law mandates that offenders to be jailed upon conviction, for not less than 20 years, without any option of fine.

Bayelsa House of Assembly had passed the amended bill into law, following increase rate of cultism in the state, especially among secondary and primary school students. During his address, Mr. Dickson noted with serious concern, the rise in cultism and other related activities in the state, especially in Yenagoa and its environs with the new amendment, law enforcement agencies have been empowered to deal decisively with suspected cultists and their sponsors.

Mr. Dickson stressed that the amendment to the law was needed so as to check the rise in cult activities among youths and in order to give the law enforcement agencies more powers to pro-actively protect lives and property as well as safeguard the future of the state.

“As a government, we cannot allow this ugly trend of events to continue unabated.

“A situation where children below 15, 16, 17 and majority of our youth population are members of one dangerous cult group or society, where they carry guns and other dangerous weapons and shoot, maim, kill and create insecurity in parts of the state is totally unacceptable”
