Jobs/Vacancies / Fidelity Bank Digital Lab Trainee Program 2018 by Paveafrica: 12:51pm On Mar 06, 2018
The Fidelity Bank Plc has made known plans to expand its digital banking operations by hiring and training 34 youths.

According to the Managing Director of the bank, Mr. Nnamdi Okonkwo, the recruitment is one of the ways the bank is responding to the digital transformation happening in the banking industry.

Okonkwo, who spoke at the Fidelity Bank Digital hangout session at the Social Media Week in Lagos on Friday, stated that research had shown that a greater number of the population of Nigeria were youths.

He added that there was a need for the bank to understand the young people, employ people who can understand their preferences and provide financial services to them efficiently.

According to him, a lot of youths live on the social media, adding that to connect with them the lender needs to interact with them.

He said, “We are hosting this session today because Fidelity Bank is a youth- inclined bank. This explains why our digital banking is experiencing tremendous growth

“We will not rest because we realise we need to constantly innovate. As a financial institution, we have to stay right on top of changes and work closely with the millennials.”

The Chief Operations and Information Officer, Fidelity Bank, Mr. Gbolahan Joshua, said the company was moving towards investing more in data analytics.

Joshua, while speaking during a panel session on “The Digital Takeover: How Millennials are Changing the Financial Landscape”, stated that skill sets were changing, and the bank was trying to adapt.

He stated that Fidelity Bank would come up with new innovations in technology to keep up with the millennials.

“There are so many new trends. We at Fidelity Bank would do our best to keep up with trends because we want to be there for you always”, Joshua stated.

Religion / African News: Rwanda Shuts Down Over 700 Churches by Paveafrica: 7:35pm On Mar 02, 2018
Local government authorities have suspended activities for a total of 714 churches in different parts of Kigali over the last one week for failure to meet minimum standards.

The places of worship were found to lack basic infrastructure, fell short of hygiene, safety standards and had issues related to their legal status, according to local leaders.

The crackdown is being carried out by respective urban district authorities in partnership with the Rwanda Governance Board.

According to Justus Kangwagye, the Head of Political Parties and Civil Society Department at the Rwanda Governance Board, places of worship are required to meet basic requirements in terms of safety, hygiene, infrastructure and legality which those affected were found to be lacking.

In an interview on Monday, Kangwagye said most of the affected places of worship were asked to halt operations until they meet the expected standards.

“Worshiping should be done in an organised way and meet minimum standards. Exercising your freedom of worship should not encroach on other people’s rights. They have been asked to halt operations until they meet the requirements,” he said.

Some may not be able to resume operations any time soon, he said.

Kangwagye said some premises exposed worshipers to risks.

african news-religion-africa

“For instance, if the infrastructure is deemed likely to cause danger to those worshiping, it is obvious that it fails to meet the requirements,” he explained.

Others were found to have inadequacies such as lack of parking lots which would lead to their members parking by the roadsides and causing traffic jam.

Other churches which were closed operated from tents.

“Churches that are hosted in tents were also asked to review their premises before they can continue their operations. As for hygiene and sanitation, you cannot have a gathering where there is no water for washing hands, no toilets among other issues,” he said.

Others, he added, were warned on the lack of safety and security installations and asked to look into it or risk closure.

For instance, a number of churches were found not to have metal detectors for security measures, which is a requirement, or a lightening arrestor.

Heads of such churches were also put on notice to make the necessary adjustments.

The authorities also issued a warning to churches that make noise and disturb peace in residential neighbourhoods.

On legality, Kangwagye explained that setting up a church, requires a temporary certificate which expires after 12 months.

However, one is required to make an application for formalising their operations within nine months of opening before the expiry of the temporary certificate.

“Most failed to honour this and failed to apply for permanent [operation] documents. They cannot be allowed to operate outside the law,” the RGB official said.

Some churches, according to him, were hiding behind freedom of worship in breach of the law.

The directive has not only affected Christian places of worship as a mosque was also affected.

Emmanuel Bayingana, the vice mayor in charge of social affairs in Kicukiro District where 156 out of 352 churches were closed down, told The New Timesthat hygiene and infrastructure levels of those that were closed were found lacking.

Bayingana said that some of the churches will not be able to resume operations as they have inadequate structures and operate from tents.

“Some of them are unlikely to resume operations as they have been operating way below required minimum requirements,” he said.

Langwide Nyirabahire, the vice mayor in charge of Social affairs in Gasabo District, said that over 355 churches have been closed so far but the process of assessment was still ongoing.

Gasabo has 699 churches.

In Nyarugenge, out of 300 churches, 203 of them have since been closed down for failure to meet standards.

City residents expressed mixed reactions with some saying the move is waranted to protect the general public while others said churches ought to have been given more time to comply with the directives or seek appropriate locations.

Bishop Innocent Nzeyimana, the president of the Churches’ Forum in Nyarugenge District, pleaded on behalf of the churches that those lacking slight requirements should be reopened and allowed to operate as they fix issues raised.

Tolu and Ayo Bintu are two brothers adding more colour to art in Lagos and beyond. We had an exciting chat with them recently. Read and enjoy…

Please, introduce yourselves

I am Dr Binutu Tolu and my brother is Ayokanmi Binutu. We are the founders of Pencils n Brushes Artworks (also known as PnB), a visual art and design company based in Lagos, Nigeria. We are from Ogun State, even though we have lived in Lagos all our lives. I studied Medicine in University of Lagos while Kanmi studied Economics (at the same university) before bagging a Masters degree from Leeds University Business School in the UK. At heart though, we are both visual artists.

We understand you offer a variety of services, can you mention them please?

At Pencils n Brushes Artworks, we create visual art. We make Pencil drawings, paintings, Handmade cards (we call them Gift Cards), graphic design. We also do speed paintings at occasions and events. We do our best to create visual art that has meaning.

At what moment did you guys decide to harness your skills and form Pencils ‘n’ Brushes Artworks?

Art is one thing that came naturally to us. I know this may sound cliché, but my brother and I have been dabbling into various visual art forms since we were kids. Name it, we have tried it: drawing on walls, paper cuttings, wet clay, designing comics, drawing, painting and so on. And we got better as the years passed. Eventually, we decided to come together, merge our strengths and see how far we could go as a team. That is how it all started.

“The Hive” is a fantastic initiative, what was the vision behind it?

Thank you for your kind words! The hive is something we are very excited about. It is our art school and was borne of a desire to educate and empower artists. Its mission is clear; we are interested in improving the standard of art in our environment, by helping artists become the best versions of themselves.

It is designed to teach various methods and media of expression. In addition to these goals, we seek to change any self-destructive mindset in the artist and help the artist realize that he/she is a professional. The hive will also teach business principles that will help the artist earn a living from his craft.

How do you deal with customer dissatisfaction?

We hardly have dissatisfied customers and here is why: In everything we do, we ensure that there is a blend of creativity and professionalism. When designing or creating art based on a client’s order, we use a client-centric approach. This means that we ensure the client is involved every step of the way, in the production of the artwork or design. We take the client through the entire process.

What is the most important lesson life has taught you?

Oh, that’s simple: Time is always on the move. You have to be just as fast and as consistent as time, to become (and to remain) your best self.

What are your long term goals?

To build Pencils n Brushes Artworks into the biggest player in the Art and Design Industry.

What are your thoughts on what we do here at Pave Africa?

I believe you guys are doing a good job. And you have an eye for quality too, that’s why you chose to talk to us. *laughs*. Really though, you are a voice that’s hard to ignore. Keep it up!

At Pave Africa, we're doing our bit towards promoting African creative entrepreneurs.

Career / African Research Grants Program 2017 (Apply Now) by Paveafrica: 9:40am On Oct 31, 2016
AFRICAN RESEARCH GRANTS PROGRAM 2017

APN Individual Research Grants

Supporting independent African research and its integration into regional and global policy communities

Overview

Request for Proposals

The African Peacebuilding Network (APN) of the Social Science Research Council (SSRC) invites research grant applications from African researchers, policy analysts, and practitioners working on conflict and peacebuilding issues at universities and research institutions or regional governmental and nongovernmental organizations in Africa.

About the Individual Research Grants Program

A core component of the APN, the research grants program is a vehicle for enhancing the quality and visibility of independent African peacebuilding research both regionally and globally, while making peacebuilding knowledge accessible to key policymakers and research centers of excellence in Africa and around the world. Grant recipients will produce research-based knowledge that is relevant to, and has a significant impact on, peacebuilding policy and practice on the continent. For its part, the APN will work toward inserting the evidence-based knowledge that this group produces into regional and global debates and policies focusing on peacebuilding.

Support is available for research and analysis on issues such as the following:

Root causes of conflict, conflict prevention and transformation
State and non-state armed actors, transnational crime, extremism and emerging trajectories of conflict
Post-conflict elections, democratization, and governance
The relationship between peacebuilding and state building, including state-society relations and state reconstruction
Transitional justice, reconciliation and peace
Economic and financial dimensions of conflict, peacekeeping and peace support operations
UN-AU-REC cooperation and Peace Support Operations
Digital media, technology and peace
Regional Economic Communities (RECs) and peacebuilding
Gender and peacebuilding
Health, post-conflict development, peace and security
Prevention of mass atrocities

Grants are awarded on a competitive, peer-reviewed basis and are intended to support six months of field-based research, from June 2017 to December 2017. Up to fifteen (15) individual grants of a maximum of $15,000 will be awarded. Women are strongly encouraged to apply

During their grant period, grantees are required to participate in two workshops organized by the APN. These workshops will provide opportunities to refine research focus and methodologies, present findings, explore ways to make work accessible through publications and other means to multiple peacebuilding constituencies, and develop constructive working relationships with other grantees, senior academics, and practitioner facilitators.

Grantees are also strongly encouraged to contribute to the program’s online and social media platforms (Kujenga Amani, Facebook, and Twitter), as well as APN’s Working Papers series and Policy Briefing Notes.

Research Grant Proposals

The APN is interested in innovative field-based projects that demonstrate strong potential for high-quality research and analysis, which in turn can inform practical action on peacebuilding and/or facilitate interregional collaboration and networking among African researchers and practitioners.

Proposals should clearly describe research objectives and significance, with alignment between research design/method and research questions and goals. Proposals should also demonstrate knowledge of the research subject and relevant literature, and address the feasibility of proposed research activities, including a time frame for project completion. Applicants should also discuss the likely relevance of the proposed research to existing knowledge on peacebuilding practice and policy. We strongly encourage the inclusion of a brief, but realistic budget outline (keeping within the allotted amount for the grant), to fit appropriately within a six-month project and the page limit required.

Eligibility

All applicants must be African citizens currently residing in an African country.

Academic applicants must hold a faculty or research position at an African university or research organization and have a PhD obtained after January 2001.

Policy analysts and practitioner applicants must be based in Africa at a regional or sub regional institution, a government agency, or a nongovernmental, media, or civil society organization and have at least a Master’s degree obtained before January 2012, with at least five years of proven research and work experience in peacebuilding-related activities on the continent.

Application Process

All applications must be uploaded through our online portal.

If you encounter any difficulties accessing the online portal, please contact APN staff at apn@ssrc.org, or by telephone at (+1) 212-377-2700, ext. 3703.

Requirements

1) Completed application form
2) Completed proposal & bibliography
3) Two reference letters
4) Language evaluation(s) (if required)
5) Updated CV

Deadline: January 20th, 2017.
