In a bombshell audio that surfaced Saturday, Senate President Bukola Saraki is heard saying his real grouse for “fighting” President Muhammadu Buhari and quitting the All Progressives Congress (APC) was because after investing about 10 billion naira for the president’s election in 2015, he was shut out from “patronage” especially regarding juicy appointments.

The audio, which had Saraki speaking in Yoruba, was published by Kayode Ogundamisi, a pro-Buhari public commentator and media contributor, via his Twitter handle. It was said to be in a recent meeting between Saraki and his loyalists in Kwara State.
The audio has not been independently verified by Ripples Nigeria and Saraki is yet to respond to the trending audio since it surfaced early on Saturday.
In the recording, the Senate President was heard saying that during the run-up to the 2015 general elections, he bankrolled President Buhari’s campaign in every state of the country except the six South-West states.

He said he spent between N200m, N300m and N400m per state with the hope that when Buhari got into office, he would be able to recoup his investments.
But Saraki said Buhari dashed his hopes.
He said, “What is the benefit of people that are campaigning for the APC? What is their track record? Use me as an example. When I left the PDP for the APC in 2014 and was campaigning for the APC like never before, we went to every state to campaign with Buhari up until the election time.

“Out of the 36 states, I paid election money in 30. Some collected N300m while some collected N400m, some collected N200m. The only states, where I had nothing to do with was in the South-West.

“Even on the phone I was calling and giving banks instructions. Our thinking was that when we get elected, we would get the majority of appointments. I even told majority of you then that we shall all be going to Abuja together after the election.

“I thought some of you will be appointed to head federal agencies like road maintenance, like FERMA, NITDA, NPA and others. Because I know that if any Kwara son becomes even just the ED of UBEC, I know what he can approve from his desk. Whether N1m or N2m.

“But for the first time, since we joined politics, you have a President of the Senate or even speaker that cannot appoint a cleaner. I am not referring to board appointments like board appointment which just collect money per sitting. If you look at the agencies they appoint executive positions, what do you want me to say?”

The full translation of the audio by Ogundamisi is as follows:

“All that you have complained about tonight is on point, I can not find anything you have said that is not on point, you complained about empowerment.
“Let us agree that the last 3 and a half years, things have not been easy at all, I agree and accept things have not been easy at all, particularly in the area of empowerment.
“Before 2015 I have always tried to empower the youth and get you involved in appointments, but this time around as a result of what I call human factor, things have not been the same, I believe it is the will of God.
“When you all are complaining and you give example of Gegele and co and you compare it to what is happening now, I am sure you are asking yourself, what is happening? how come all of you struggling with me are not rewarded, it is unacceptable.
“What is the point of putting everything into the emergence of a government and we could not benefit anything from the government, you are asking yourself, what have you benefited.
“If you have not benefited personally in the last 3 and a half years, how do you go to market us, won’t people ask you what you have benefited for yourself?
“It got to a stage that people will be making fond of you and asking you what you have benefited, but what is happening from Abuja, use me as an example, in 2015 I carried @OfficialAPCNg on my head around Nigeria.
“Hardly any state in Nigeria that I did not campaign for @MBuhari, up to the time of the election in 2015,

President Muhammadu Buhari has appealed to the National Labour Congress (NLC) to call off its nationwide strike.
Punch reports that Buhari said this on Monday while receiving members of the Association of Retired Career Ambassadors of Nigeria.
Buhari asked that the organised labour union consider the state the country was in when it was “inherited” by the present administration.
President Buhari also appealed to the National Labour Congress to consider what this government inherited and the more it is doing with fewer resources in putting the economy right.
He told the retired ambassadors that the country is now getting its priorities right. He said:
There is no part of the country I haven’t been to, having attempted to be President four times.
I know the condition of our roads. The rails were literally killed, there was no power despite the admittance of some previous leadership that they spent $16 billion on the sector.
Today, we are getting our priorities right and we believe that of the three fundamental issues we campaigned on – security, the economy and fighting corruption-, we have remained very relevant and Nigerians believe we have achieved something.

The Nigerian Union of Teachers, Niger State chapter, has instructed all teachers in the state to join in the nationwide strike for increment of wages by organised labour.

Addressing newsmen on Monday at the end of the State Wing Executive Council meeting at the NUT Teachers House in Minna, the state chairman, Ibrahim Umar, called for an approval for the increase in the retirement age of teachers to 65 years.

Umar said, “We received a directive from the national body that by 12 midnight of Monday, if nothing happens in the affirmative, we should join in the national strike by the Nigeria Labour Congress.”

The state chairman, while disclosing that the number of teachers in the state has reduced from 30,000 to less than 27,000 said, “We want Governor Abubakar Bello to send an executive bill to the state House of Assembly for the express approval to increase the retirement age of teachers from 60 to 65 years and 35 to 40 years of service".

The Union also urged the Niger State Government to regularise the release and implementation of members’ promotion at both primary and post primary school levels between 2015 and 2017.

The house of representatives, Nigeria has asked the ministry of education not to group subjects like Christian religious studies (CRS) and Islamic religious studies (IRS) under civic education.
In the revised universal basic education curriculum implemented by the Nigerian educational research and development council (NERDC), both subjects were grouped under civic education.
At plenary on Tuesday, Beni Lar, a People’s Democratic Party (PDP) lawmaker from Plateau state, opposed the compulsory inclusion of religious education in the revised curriculum.
Lar charged his colleagues to consider the issue which has sparked controversy in the country.
After a debate, the lower legislative chamber adopted the motion to ask the ministry of education not to merge the subjects.

The son of a mafia boss’ is facing life in jail for gunning down his best pal who simply ‘liked’ a Facebook picture of his girlfriend.

Victim Francesco Prestia, 19, was left dead in an olive field in Mileto, Italy, with three bullets in his chest.

His killer has been named in Italian media as 15-year-old Alex Pititto, the son of ‘Ndrangheta mafia boss Salvatore Pititto, known as ‘El Tio’, or the Uncle.

Pititto saw the Facebook ‘like’ as a “lack of respect”, according to local media reports.

He is reported to have turned himself into police and led them to the olive grove where he had left his friend’s body.

Local media reports that the teenage mobster had long suspected his friend had feelings for his girlfriend.

But when he saw that Francesco had ticked the ‘like’ button for a new picture on her Facebook profile he called his friend to a meeting in a remote field and gunned him down, reports said.

Ironically, he had recently posted a picture of him and his friend online, captioned: “Friendship is something in the mouth of everybody but in the heart of not too many people.”

Victim Francesco’s family left a message on his Facebook page saying: “You were so perfect that angels wanted you with them. We miss you a lot. Travel well, prince.”

Pititto’s family is one of the lynchpins of Italian organised crime.

His father, Salvatore, 49, his mother, Maria Antonia Messiano, his brother and his cousin were arrested in January in a police anti-mafia operation called Stammer.

Italian mafia experts say that a new, young, and deadly generation of teenage ‘baby bosses’ are making organised crime even more lethal.

Mafia author Roberto Saviano said the new generation have no fear of being caught and are quicker to kill than the old crime clans.

He said: “They are young and have their whole lives ahead of them. For them, it’s the same.”
