Almost everybody born before the invention of the internet must have heard the tale of a nonexistent football match between Nigeria and India that obviously took place in a parallel universe and somehow we got to hear the gory stories of that match. Though there are many variations of the story, every prevaricator seems to agree on a couple of facts about this fictional football match. Each storyteller agrees that;
1. This match ended with India scoring 99 goals and Nigeria scoring just one goal.
2. Nigerians where unable to kick the ball because the football kept turning to a lion (or something scary) to prevent them from playing the soccer ball.
3. The Indians later agreed that if Nigeria could score a goal, they would concede defeat
4. Samuel Okwaraji scored the winning goal and lost his life in the process.
5. FIFA banned India from soccer because they used black magic in that very game
With the help of common sense (not that it was absent back then), quick access to information and the internet, every right thinking Nigerian has come to realize that such a story should be filled under “Blatant Lies”.
Why Did This Story Thrive For So Long?
Most people like to pass off this story as true with the fact that no one has ever seen India in an International Football Match. Since no one actually saw India participate in most international soccer games, this gave a little credence to the story. India
Another reason this lie could thrive for long was the fact that credible information was not readily available at our finger tips. It not like every Emeka, Audu and Ojo could visit Google in a matter of minutes and tell our ominous fabricators that they should stop spreading toxic lies.
And to be honest we have a tingling feeling that this lie was concocted by an elder of a community because, let’s be honest who questions the words of the elders in Nigeria. Remember, what an adult sees sitting down a child will never see even if he consults Google, Siri or Cortana.
The Element of Truth In This Story
On the 12th of August 1989, Nigeria lost Sam Okwaraji.
Sam Okwaraji was the player rumored to have lost his life in that game when in truth he died during a FIFA World Cup qualifying game against Angola in the 77th minute.
He collapsed and died of cognitive heart failure. May his soul rest in Perfect Peace. AMEN
So that is the only truthful thing about that story, the fact that a Nigerian player died during a football match. That’s it. The match was not against India, we did not lose the match and as you must have guessed, and there were no lions either.
What Is The Deal With India Anyway?
India qualified for the 1950 FIFA world cup as a result of the withdrawal of their scheduled opponents. But the Indian football governing body, the All India Football Federation (AIFF) decided against going to the world cup, being unable to understand the importance of the event at that time.
Some of the Reasons shown by the AIFF included the cost of travel, lack of practice time, team selection issued and valuing the Olympics over the FIFA World cup. It should be noted that FIFA agreed to bear a major part of the travel expenses, but it did not really help their decision making.

On the heels of the March 28 Presidential election, in which PresidentGoodluck Jonathanlost his re-election bid,Punchis authoritatively reporting that investigation launched by the incumbent reveals that politicians and government officials spent millions of naira meant for election campaigns and ‘errands’ on luxury properties.
The President, who is said to have released overN2 trillionin cash to campaign coordinators, ministers, special advisers, close aides and friends, support groups and traditional rulers, is bothered that most of the people could not even deliver theirpolling boothsand local governments.
“The President was said to have been further irked by the results of an investigation he ordered. The probe showed that some coordinators used campaign funds to buy very expensive properties, especially in Abuja, and luxury cars. Some of the funds have also been traced to the bank accounts of senior party and government officials who were charged with the disbursement of funds to voters and groups,”Punchreport reads in part.
According to the report, Jonathan has also set up a committee of five to ensure the funds are recovered. But a source in the Presidency however told the newspaper that, a close associate of the President said getting the money back would be difficult.
It also contained that funds given to traditional rulers across the country will not be asked for, but that the President is bent on making his ministers, close aides and special advisers refund the monies collected.
The source said;“Some ministers did not get less than N20bn each. None of them can deny it because this fact isn’t hidden within government circles. The only problem with such monies is that there is no receipt to show that they collected money. The sad part is that almost all of them performed woefully. Even in the states where the PDP won, some ministers could not deliver 100,000 votes. They could not mobilise their people to come out. The President is not happy. They all went property and car shopping. This was the most expensive election in the history of this country, yet there was no result.
“The sad part was that even after the President lost on March 28, more money was given to all of them to make up for the dismal outing by winning their states during the April 11 elections. But that turned out to be a bad decision because apart from losing the governorship election, we didn’t perform well at the National Assembly and House of Representatives polls.
“They must give an account of the money since they didn’t use it for the election. The President is not particular about the funds spent on genuine campaign needs like the hiring of jets, advertisements and the rest that also cost billions of naira. His focus is on the individuals that collected billions to deliver their states but couldn’t even win their polling booths.”
According toPunch, apart from the N20 billion given to some key ministers and senior special advisers, especially in states where the PDP hoped to capture from the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC), some pro-Jonathan support groups received about N16bn.
Confirming the cash distribution, a senior member of the PDP also told the newspaper that “Lagos was a show of shame.”
The insider said;“A few days to the governorship poll, about $150m was received in cash by about five top campaign coordinators. But they failed again, even more than we did in the presidential poll because we lost some areas we won on March 28 to the APC on April 11. They were to share this money to the local governments and the masses.
“Please understand me, I am saying that the sum of $150m was just for the governorship election in Lagos. We are not talking about the sums they got for the presidential election. Only one out of the five people that shared the money gave some of it to local government chairmen. This person disbursed about N2bn. The rest of them sat on the money.
“The coordinator that collected the sum of $50m later went to a Federal Government agency and complained of not having enough funds for the election and got an additional $20m. The story is the same in almost all the South-West especially Oyo, Osun, and the northern states. A female minister from the North, who got the highest amount of funds for that region, lost her state in a shameful manner.”
However, the National Publicity Secretary of the PDP,Olisa Metuh, distanced the party from the cash disbursement.
“The national leadership of the PDP is not aware of any campaign fund. We were not part of it and therefore we can’t be asked to account for what we didn’t know anything about,"he said.“There was a campaign committee and only the committee is in the position to account for any fund.”
The committee set up to retrieve the monies has been said to be unsuccessful so far, as the beneficiaries are not cooperating.
The President is reportedly focusing on the South-West and northern states.

A 24 hours curfew has been imposed in the peaceful Saminaka town, headquarters of Lere LGA in Kaduna State, following violence broke out in the tow, when some Muslim youths suspected to belong to the All Progressive Congress [APC] attacked Christians in the town.
The Muslim youths had trekked down to a Christian dominated community (Hayin Gada) calling them with all sort of vulgar names and attempted to destroy Assemblies of God Church in the area all in the name of celebration of El Rufai’s victory over the Peoples Democratic Party [PDP].
The provocation lead to some Christian youths to challenge the assailants who trekked down all the way from the main town to come and be insulting them and attempting burning the church. Violence subsequently erupted resulting to the murder of some people and injuring many Christian youths.
Some locals confirmed that more corpses were discovered in some hidden corners of the town.
The imposition of the curfew is to avert reprisal attacks by the angry youths who are rumored to be recouping for a pay back.
Kaduna state police command has issued a press statement to that effect and has since deployed many police men to the town to contain the situation.

Minister of Information, Senator Patricia Akwashiki, disclosed this to State House correspondents on Wednesday at the end of the Federal

She further said while the valedictory FEC meeting would hold on May 20, everything that requires the President approval must be presented to him latest on May 13 so that the incoming government would not accuse him of rushing projects.

The minister added that Jonathan had directed MDAs to brief him on inherited projects and the ones initiated by his administration under
their jurisdiction.
She said the briefings were expected to include the status of the projects and levels of implementation.
The minister added, "The President emphasised on the need for all MDAs to submit their handing over notes to the Office of the Secretary to
the Government of the Federation by 20th of this month, that is next Monday. So we are going to be very busy this weekend putting our
handing over notes together.
The President also emphasised that he would require another little briefing from all MDAs to indicate inherited projects, how far they have been executed and initiated projects by his administration and
the level of completion, whether completed, ongoing or abandoned."

She said the present administration was doing everything possible to
ensure smooth transition, adding that Vice President Namadi Sambo is heading the governments transition committee while Anyim is heading the inauguration committee.

Akwashiki however said notwithstanding the transition programme, governance had not stopped in the country. That is not to say that governance has stopped, of course we are in government until the day the President-elect takes his oath of office," she explained.

A tanker driver, identified simply as Mike, has crushed to death a 47-year-old naval officer, Tali Muhammed, in the Apapa area of Lagos State.
The tanker, with registration number, JJJ 737 XH, was said to be heading for a private park on Dockyard Road, Apapa, when the incident happened.
The tanker was said to be owned by a firm, Godswill Limited.
PUNCH Metrolearnt that Muhammed was part of a traffic team overseeing the smooth passage of trucks and other vehicles on the road, where Naval Training Command Headquarters was located.
The Adamawa State indigene was reportedly asleep around 5am on Wednesday when he was awoken by the noise of the speeding truck.
Our correspondent gathered that as he awoke from sleep, he shouted at the driver to stop.
The driver, who was unaware that the victim was at the back of the vehicle, was said to have put the vehicle in reverse.
Our correspondent was told that Muhammed, a master warrant officer in the navy, was crushed to death.
The tyres of the tanker were said to have climbed on his body and broken his skull.
WhenPUNCH Metrovisited the scene of the incident, he observed that security checks on tankers going through the route had been intensified.
A colleague of the victim, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said Muhammed had been buried according to Islamic rites.
He said, “Around 5am on that day, the tanker was speeding and his headlights were also off.
“The noise of the tanker woke Muhammed up and he asked the driver to stop.
“The man had driven ahead, but as he reversed, unaware that Muhammed was at the back, the tanker hit the officer and he fell on the ground.
“The vehicle climbed his body and broke his head.
“The driver did not know he had killed him, because it was dark. It was when he was accosted that he knew.”
Another source, who declined to give his name, said the naval authorities had already given directives to officers and men manning the road that after 5am, no truck should be allowed entry into the Dockyard Road.
He added that the accident happened because the driver wanted to beat the time.
An eyewitness toldPUNCH Metrothat the suspect was handed over to the policemen attached to the Apapa division, while the corpse of the victim was deposited at the Naval Medical Centre, Ojo.
He said when the news was broken to his wife, she fainted and had since been hospitalised.
He said, “He had five kids. When the news was broken to his wife, she fainted.
“She was rushed to the hospital where she is presently receiving treatment.”
It was gathered that the deceased had already spent 30 years in active service before tragedy struck.
A resident, Gbemi Sola, said since the incident happened, no truck had been allowed to move into the dockyard to load products.
“Also, loaded trucks of inflammable products like petrol are not allowed to exit.
“This has come with its attendant implications on life and property , while many oil despots are currently not loading any product for now.
“The implication is that about 40 per cent of petroleum products meant for distribution across the country cannot be distributed,” he said.
The Command Information Officer, Western Naval Command, Lt. Commander A. Sani, said tanker drivers cooperated with the command on the incident.
He said, “The drivers assisted us to evacuate the remains of the deceased and for about one hour we had to clear the road.
“After that, they were allowed to use the route and continue with their legitimate businesses.”
He said the command had already met with the family of the deceased to condole with them, adding that the deceased was a disciplined officer.
“He was dedicated and hard-working. What happened was unfortunate and as it is our custom, we have sent a delegation to his burial.
“The navy commander has visited the family. We will ensure they get all that is due to them,” he added.

Fulani insurgents on Wednesday again attacked and raided villages in Logo Local Government Area (LGA) of Benue State killing about 31 persons in the process.
The attacks which cut across three wards of Turan, Tombo and Tse Vir were carried out simultaneously between 5am and 5:30am.
The incident took place less than three weeks after Fulani insurgents attacked Agatu LGA of the state and killed about 85 persons.
According to a witness, Terna Dookaan, who spoke with Daily Independent on phone, the attack was the worst because it claimed the lives of more women and children than ever.
He explained that they were taken by surprise because they had been celebrating the victory of Muhammadu Buhari the night before and slept late only to be woken by the sound of gun shots and shouting.
According to him, most of the villagers started running helter-skelter, adding that in the confusion that ensued most families left behind children and the aged that were subsequently massacred by the insurgents.
Another source said, “They (Fulani) started shooting and we were all running for our lives. As at the last count, we identified about 31 bodies, most of them women, the old and the children. These people (Fulani) are heartless”.
Daily Independent gathered that most of the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) were now in Ugba, the LG headquarters and some in neighbouring Zaki-Biam, the headquarters of Ukum LGA.
State Command of the Nigeria Police was not able to give details of neither the attacks nor measures taken to ameliorate the situation.
As at press time, the police spokesman, Austin Ezeani said he was trying without success to reach the Logo Divisional Police Officer (DPO) to get details to no avail.

Around 150 people are feared dead after a plane crashed in the French Alps.
Flight 4U9525 disappeared from radar around 45 minutes after leaving Barcelona in Spain for Dusseldorf in Germany at 10am local time.
It is believed to have come down in the Digne area of southern France.
French President Francois Hollande confirmed the crash and said he expects there to be "no survivors".
Reports suggest there were 144 passengers and six crew on board.The final words from the pilots on board the Germanwings flight were 'emergency , emergency'.
It has been reported that the call came through just 45 minutes after the Airbus A320 took off from Barcelona on its way to Dusseldorf.
Earlier, the Airbus was in contact with Air Traffic Control (ATC) at Marseille, saying: "Mayday, Mayday, Mayday"
According to the French Civil Aviation Authority (DGAE) they also received a distress FA, which happens when a plane disappears from radars, or blacks out and all communications are cut with the cockpit.

PUNCH Metrolearnt that the incident occurred at the couple’s residence on Fasasi Street, Ajegunle, Apapa, on Thursday, March 19.
Our correspondents gathered that the suspect, Wahab, who hailed from Uromi, Edo State, had been living with Ebi since 2013, after she dropped out of secondary school. Ebi hailed from Bayelsa State.
The two reportedly had a kid in 2014, who died in December after a brief sickness.
It was learnt that the couple had gone on an outing on Thursday when an argument ensued in the afternoon over feeding money.
Wahab, a hairdresser, was said to have stabbed the 28-year-old to death after they got home.
Policemen from the Layeni division were alerted by neighbours and she was subsequently arrested.
Speaking with PUNCH Metro, the suspect said she did not intend to kill her lover, adding that she acted in anger.
She said, “We have been together since 2013. My father died and I dropped out of school when I was in SSS 3, and that was when we started dating.
“On Thursday, we went out for an event. As we were returning home, I said he should hand me the key to the house and my feeding allowance, but he said no. He explained that he had no money for our feeding.
“Then he started to abuse me. I told him I was going home, and that he should not bother about the money again. That was how he punched me in the face and attacked me while we were still on the road.
“I left him and went to look for a hammer, which I used to break the door. That night, when he came in, I was still angry. I got a knife which I used to stab him. I didn’t intend to kill him. I was just annoyed over what happened in the afternoon.”
It was gathered that neither the victim’s relatives nor the suspect’s had learnt about the incident.
However, the corpse of the victim had been deposited in a mortuary in the area.
A police source revealed that Ebi was stabbed to death on the right side of the neck.
He added that the police had also recovered the knife used to commit the crime.
He said, “The couple met each other at a night club in 2013 and had been dating since then. They were not legally married. They went out on Thursday and probably got drunk in the process. When they returned, there was an argument and a fight began.
“The suspect ran to the kitchen and grabbed a knife. She stabbed her lover in the right side of the neck, and he was rushed to a hospital, where he died.”

A sprawling Hamptons 'castle' belonging to the family of billionaire Hard Rock Cafe mogul Peter Morton was completely destroyed by fire on Wednesday.
The blaze broke out at the oceanfront East Hampton Village mansion in the early afternoon, with fire crews spending hours putting out the flames, which were fanned by strong winds.
While the cause of the fire remains unclear, crews began knocking what was left of the house down at 5pm.
The home, according to Page Six, is owned by Morton and his family, but, fortunately no one was home at the time.
The property was last appraised in 2008 for $21.5 million.
