Politics / Devastating Impact Of Local Government Failures In Nigeria - Abubakar Makolo by PENTALK360(m): 9:38am On Aug 30
The Devastating Consequences of Local Government Maladministration in Nigeria

By Shamsudeen Abubakar Makolo

24th August 2024 - Nigeria, a country with vast resources and potential, is facing a daunting challenges that is linked to the devastating consequences of local government maladministration. For decades, the mismanagement and ineptitude of local government administration have hindered economic development, exacerbated poverty, and undermined the quality of life for millions of citizens. The recent supreme court judgment on local government autonomy offers a glimmer of hope for reform, but the journey ahead will require collective effort and commitment. As a concerned citizen and advocate for good governance, I am compelled to highlight the severe consequences of local government maladministration in Nigeria and urge immediate action to revitalize local economies, restore public trust, and ensure a brighter future for all citizens.

Nigeria's economy and citizenry have suffered greatly due to the mismanagement and ineptitude of local government administration. This has led to a surge in rural-urban migration, leaving villages deserted and fueling irregular and unsafe migration across international borders.

Local government maladministration has hindered economic development, leading to a lack of investment, infrastructure decay, and reduced economic opportunities. In fact, it's estimated that Nigeria has lost over ₦100 billion in revenue due to inefficient tax and revenue collection. Inefficient collection of taxes and revenues has resulted in significant financial losses, further exacerbating economic stagnation.

Poor delivery of essential services like healthcare, education, and sanitation has negatively impacted citizens' quality of life. According to a report by UNICEF, Nigeria's infant mortality rate is 69 deaths per 1,000 live births, one of the highest rates in the world. Inadequate healthcare and education have resulted in poor health outcomes and a lack of skilled workforce.

The exodus of people from rural areas to cities has led to overcrowding, strain on resources, and increased poverty. In fact, it's estimated that over 50,000 people migrate from rural areas to cities every year in search of better opportunities. Once-thriving villages now lie empty, as residents seek better opportunities in urban centers. Desperate citizens risk their lives migrating internationally, often falling prey to human traffickers and exploitation.

Maladministration has widened the poverty gap, leaving vulnerable populations without access to basic necessities of life. According to a World Bank report, the poverty rate is estimated to have reached 38.9% in 2023, with an estimated 87 million Nigerians living below the poverty line — the world’s second-largest poor population after India. Frustration and desperation have led to increased social unrest, crime, and insecurity.

To address these devastating consequences, the recent supreme court judgment on local government autonomy must be fully implemented, followed by reforms in local government administration by implementing effective governance structures, transparency, and accountability. Invest in rural development by providing infrastructure, economic opportunities, and essential services to revitalize rural areas. Address migration drivers by tackling poverty, inequality, and lack of opportunities through initiatives like job creation, vocational training, and social protection schemes.

Citizen participation and engagement are crucial for sustainable change. Therefore, I urge all Nigerians to take ownership of the reform process and demand accountability from their local leaders.

Nigeria's future depends on addressing the devastating consequences of local government maladministration. It is imperative to take immediate action to revitalize local economies, restore public trust, and ensure a brighter future for all citizens. Together, we can make a difference and create a better Nigeria.

Recommendations:

1. Implement the supreme court judgment on local government autonomy
2. Reform local government administration to ensure effective governance, transparency, and accountability
3. Invest in rural development to revitalize rural areas
4. Address migration drivers through initiatives like job creation, vocational training, and social protection schemes
5. Encourage citizen participation and engagement in the reform process

By working together, we can create a better future for Nigeria and ensure that local government maladministration is a thing of the past.

Politics / Hardship In Nigeria: A Comprehensive Overview - By Faleye Oluwatosin by PENTALK360(m): 9:07pm On Aug 21
By Faleye Oluwatosin

Nigeria, Africa's most populous country, has been grappling with significant socioeconomic challenges that affect a broad spectrum of its citizens. The hardships stem from multiple factors, including economic instability, high unemployment rates, inflation, corruption, and inadequate infrastructure. These issues have created a cycle of poverty and frustration among the populace.

Key Issues Contributing to Hardship

Economic Instability:

Inflation: Nigeria has been experiencing persistent inflation, leading to a sharp increase in the cost of living. Essentials like food, fuel, and healthcare have become more expensive, straining household budgets.

Currency Devaluation: The Nigerian Naira has weakened against major foreign currencies, making imports more costly and increasing the burden on consumers.

High Unemployment Rates: With a large youth population, the lack of job opportunities is a critical issue. Many young Nigerians are either unemployed or underemployed, leading to widespread frustration and a sense of hopelessness.

Insecurity:

Terrorism and Insurgency: Regions like the Northeast have been plagued by Boko Haram insurgency, leading to loss of lives, displacement, and economic disruption.

Banditry and Kidnappings: Other parts of the country, particularly in the Northwest and Southeast, face challenges from bandits and kidnappers, which has further destabilized communities and discouraged investment.

Corruption:

Mismanagement of Resources: Corruption at various levels of government has led to the misallocation and embezzlement of public funds, hindering development projects and essential services.

Lack of Transparency and Accountability: The absence of effective checks and balances has allowed corrupt practices to flourish, exacerbating economic inequalities.

Infrastructure Deficit:

Poor Roads and Transportation: Inadequate road networks and poor transportation infrastructure have hampered economic activities and increased the cost of doing business.

Electricity Shortages: Persistent power outages and an unreliable electricity supply have stifled industrial growth and increased operational costs for businesses.

Health and Education: The healthcare system is underfunded and overwhelmed, while the education sector suffers from poor funding, inadequate facilities, and low-quality teaching.

Social Inequality:

Wealth Disparity: A significant gap exists between the wealthy and the poor, with a small elite controlling much of the country's resources while a large portion of the population lives in poverty.

Gender Inequality: Women in Nigeria often face systemic barriers in accessing education, healthcare, and economic opportunities, contributing to broader social inequalities.

Way Out: Potential Solutions

Economic Reforms:

Diversification: Nigeria's economy is heavily reliant on oil. Diversifying into agriculture, manufacturing, and technology can create jobs and reduce vulnerability to global oil price fluctuations.

Support for SMEs: Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are the backbone of any economy. Providing access to finance, reducing regulatory burdens, and offering technical support can help these businesses thrive.

Monetary Policies: Implementing policies that stabilize the currency and control inflation is crucial to restoring purchasing power and economic stability.

Improving Security

Strengthening Security Forces: Investing in training, equipment, and intelligence for the police and military can help combat terrorism, banditry, and kidnappings more effectively.

Community Policing: Engaging local communities in security efforts can improve trust and cooperation, leading to better crime prevention and resolution.

Fighting Corruption:

Institutional Reforms: Strengthening institutions like the judiciary, anti-corruption agencies, and law enforcement can enhance transparency and accountability.

Public Awareness and Engagement: Educating the public about the impact of corruption and encouraging citizen participation in governance can help hold leaders accountable.

Infrastructure Development

Public-Private Partnerships (PPP): Collaborating with the private sector to fund and manage infrastructure projects can accelerate development in areas like transportation, energy, and telecommunications.

Renewable Energy Investment: Investing in solar, wind, and hydroelectric power can help address the electricity deficit and reduce reliance on fossil fuels.

Social Welfare Programs

Education and Skill Development: Expanding access to quality education and vocational training can empower the youth and reduce unemployment.

Healthcare Access: Improving healthcare infrastructure, particularly in rural areas, and implementing universal health coverage can enhance the quality of life.

Poverty Alleviation Programs: Direct cash transfers, food security programs, and affordable housing initiatives can provide immediate relief to those most affected by poverty.

Promoting Social Equity

Gender Equality Initiatives: Ensuring equal access to education, healthcare, and economic opportunities for women can foster a more inclusive society.

Reducing Wealth Disparity: Progressive taxation, social safety nets, and fair wage policies can help bridge the gap between the rich and the poor.

Conclusion
Addressing the hardships in Nigeria requires a multi-faceted approach that involves economic reform, infrastructure development, security enhancement, anti-corruption measures, and social welfare programs. While these challenges are significant, with concerted efforts from the government, private sector, and civil society, Nigeria can create a more stable and prosperous future for its citizens.

Politics / New Dawn For Local Governance In Nigeria: Path To Autonomy by PENTALK360(m): 8:56pm On Aug 16
By Shamsudeen Abubakar Makolo

Abuja, Nigeria - In 1999, during President Olusegun Obasanjo's presidency the State and Local Government Joint Account was introduced using the 1999 constitution, a system that inadvertently enabled the misappropriation of local government funds. This move compromised the integrity of the local government structure, intended to be the third tier of government. The consequences were far-reaching, leading to a decline in local governance and public service delivery.

The Consequences of Joint Account

The joint account system allowed state governments to exercise significant control over local government funds, creating an environment ripe for corruption and mismanagement. This led to:

1. Misappropriation of Funds: Local government revenues were siphoned off, depriving communities of essential public services and infrastructure. For instance, in 2019, a report by the Nigerian Audit Office revealed that over N10 billion was misappropriated from local government funds in a single state.

2. Decay of Local Governance: The third tier of government, meant to be closest to the people, became ineffective, and local governments struggled to fulfill their constitutional responsibilities. As a result, many local governments failed to provide basic services such as healthcare, education, and sanitation.

3. Inequitable Development: The concentration of power and resources at the state level exacerbated regional disparities, hindering balanced national development. For example, some states received significantly more funding than others, leading to unequal distribution of resources.

4. Lack of Transparency: The joint account system made it difficult to track how funds were being used, leading to a lack of transparency and accountability. This was evident in the numerous cases of corruption and embezzlement that went undetected for years.

5. Inefficient Service Delivery: The joint account system led to inefficient service delivery, as local governments were unable to respond effectively to community needs. This resulted in poor road networks, inadequate healthcare facilities, and substandard education.

6. Underdevelopment: The joint account system hindered local economic development, as funds meant for development projects were misappropriated or misused. This led to underdevelopment in many local areas, with communities lacking basic infrastructure and amenities.

The end for all of these and more is in sight as the present administration has made it a cardinal priority so as to ensure that the people who are the actual owner of sovereignty and common wealth can have significant access.

A Breakthrough: Supreme Court Judgment

In a landmark ruling by Justice Emmanuel Agim (JSC) the lead judge of the 7 member panel on the 11th of July 2024, the Supreme Court has granted local governments full autonomy, liberating them from the shackles of state control. This judgment marks a significant milestone in Nigeria's quest for effective local governance.

The Supreme Court's decision will:

1. Empower Local Governments: Local governments can now manage their finances, make independent decisions, and respond to community needs.

2. Foster Grassroots Development: Autonomy will enable local governments to drive development initiatives, tailoring solutions to local contexts.

3. Enhance Accountability: With control over their finances, local governments will be more accountable to their constituents, promoting transparency and good governance.

President Tinubu's Commitment

President Bola Tinubu's administration has demonstrated a commitment to strengthening local governance. The Supreme Court's judgment aligns with his vision for a more decentralized and effective system of government.

A New Era for Local Governance

The granting of full autonomy to local governments marks a new chapter in Nigeria's political history. As local governments assume their rightful place as the third tier of government, citizens can expect improved public service delivery, enhanced accountability, and more inclusive development. The journey to autonomy has been long, but the promise of a brighter future for local governance in Nigeria has finally been realized.

In Conclusion

The Supreme Court's landmark ruling granting local governments full autonomy is a significant milestone in Nigeria's quest for effective local governance. By empowering local governments to manage their finances and make independent decisions, this ruling paves the way for improved public service delivery, grassroots development, and enhanced accountability. As Nigeria embarks on this new era of local governance, citizens can expect a more decentralized and effective system of government, where their voices are heard and their needs are prioritized. With President Tinubu's administration committed to strengthening local governance, the future of Nigeria's local governments looks brighter than ever.

Business / Cash "Aye-ko-ooto" Onadele: A Roaring African Voice Calling For Change by PENTALK360(m): 7:02pm On Aug 12
Cash "Aye-ko-ooto" Onadele: A Roaring African Voice Calling for Change through the Arts

By Bolaji Israel

The arts and their promoters have long served as powerful voices for inspiring and enforcing radical changes across social, political, economic, and cultural landscapes.

Nigeria, and Africa more broadly, has suffered from poor leadership characterised by corruption, nepotism, widespread poverty, stunted development, inequality, loss of identity, erosion of cultural values, and a troubling craving for foreign lifestyles, among other social maladies.

These issues have marred the promising trajectory of a nation with over 200 million people, rich in both natural and human resources, especially since the onset of its current fourth democratic era in 1999.

One of the literary voices leveraging the power of the arts—particularly drama—to inspire change in Nigeria and Africa is Cash Akinyemi Onadele, also known as Aye-ko-Ooto. He is a prolific writer and a culture-aware philosopher, poet, and playwright.

His passion for literature was nurtured by his childhood experiences with his farmer grandparents, who filled his early years with captivating stories. This foundation sparked his interest in literature, and despite earning a Master’s degree in Agronomy, he ultimately found his voice in the realm of the arts.

Onadele firmly believes that the erosion of cultural identity has distorted the mindset of many Nigerians, leading them to embrace foreign influences—revised histories, religions, lifestyles, foods, music, and addictions—instead of the indigenous practices that have proven their worth for centuries before European colonisation.

Through his art, he passionately calls on Africans to return to their roots and heritage as a critical first step towards achieving comprehensive social and economic development. He asserts that a lost mind, devoid of identity, cannot effectively contribute to nation-building.

Despite spending considerable time in Europe and America gaining valuable experience and writing extensively, Onadele has remained true to his African roots, a theme that permeates his impressive body of literary work, which includes over 109 collections of plays, poetry, and prose.

His latest play, "Eni Ogun" (The Noble Warrior), produced with the support of the business sector led by FirstBank, was performed in July across Lagos and Ogun States at iconic venues such as the Muson Centre in Lagos Island and the June 12 Cultural Centre in Abeokuta, in celebration of Prof. Wole Soyinka’s 90th birthday.

Through the play, Aye-ko-ooto not only celebrates Soyinka’s artistic exploits but also tackles critical issues of leadership, identity crisis, culture, values, class, history, and corruption in Nigeria through the lens of history, aligning with Soyinka's radical ideologies.

The protagonist—a representation of Professor Soyinka—is the young and charismatic Oluwole Lowo, a noble prince and warrior who, despite his preference for a private life of hunting, teaching, and romance with his intended, Olasope, becomes the conscience of society, catalysing a seismic shift in leadership and community dynamics.

Set in the colonial era of 1884/1885, the fictional play delves into themes of colonial invasion and subjugation, love, leadership, cultural beliefs, religion, and corruption.

Onadele weaponises the protagonist’s struggles as a potent catalyst for the community’s collective demand for positive change, ultimately leading to the natives’ triumph over their oppressors.

The over two-hour play, an adaptation from the drama emerges as a clarion call for Nigerians and Africans to unite, shed foreign identities and practices, rediscover true histories and heritage, embrace indigenous customs and cultures, advocate for responsible leadership, and strive for an egalitarian society characterised by development.

In an interview with THECONSCIENCE NG, the playwright unveiled the philosophy underpinning the play: “Every soul has a shell,” inspired by Wole Soyinka’s play, “Death and the King’s Horseman” (1975).

He stated, “I distilled the essence of this quote and wrapped literature around it to explore the persona. The story is rich and layered. My aim was to celebrate a dramatist with a drama. I sought the deeper meaning of the quote, combining romantic comedy with beautiful literature, all interwoven with the story of our people.”

Aye-ko-Ooto elaborated on the underlying philosophy: “Every soul has a birthplace, representing identity; every soul is nurtured, reflecting culture; every soul is loved, embodying passion; and every soul has a noble purpose tied to tribal citizenship. When faced with adversity, every soul must summon the courage of character. Ultimately, every soul carries a message, and that message is your inheritance.

“The essence is clear: if you fail to find your identity, neglect your citizenship, and do not stand up for your values in troubled times, you leave your children without an inheritance.”

Onadele described Wole Soyinka as an enigma—a literary cult hero, cultural icon, champion of freedom, and an unwavering advocate for justice, who also holds a deep affection for children. He shared a personal connection with Soyinka, emphasizing the playwright’s commitment to preserving cultural artifacts as an undeniable ambassador of culture.

To promote the Yoruba language and culture, Aye-ko-Ooto intentionally wrote parts of the play in Yoruba, encouraging European audiences to engage more deeply with the language.

In response to the alarming decline in cultural awareness and identity among young Nigerians, the playwright urged the government to embrace ethnography—a principle that prioritizes narratives rooted in African stories. He advocated for increased funding, including prizes and grants, for works celebrating African culture over those with foreign plots.

He called on well-meaning Nigerians to treat artists and their promoters with respect, rather than viewing them as beggars, while encouraging greater support for the arts based on merit.

Onadele, who also has a background in Artificial Intelligence (AI) from his time in Europe, recalls how being exposed at an early age to the works of renowned Nigerian author of Yorùbá heritage, Chief Daniel Olorunfẹmi Fágúnwa (commonly known as D. O. Fágúnwà), inspired his own interest in writing. For him, the Yoruba native voice adds authenticity to storytelling.

According to Onadele, who has built the world’s largest library of individual poetry produced by any single author, every success story has humble beginnings.

Earlier this year, Aye-ko-Ooto was in his element at the Lagos Book and Art Festival (LABAF), dubbed Africa’s largest cultural picnic, where he conducted a two-day mentorship session with undergraduate students from the Creative Arts Department at the University of Lagos on the first day at Kongi’s Harvest Gallery, Freedom Park, Lagos.

Onadele also hosted another mentorship programme for pupils from various public primary schools.

The prolific writer engaged young people on the value of literature while unveiling an endowment for literary prizes in both Yoruba and English languages. It was a rich, educational, and inspiring experience for participating students, as Onadele shared insights from his journey as a writer, despite having a BSc. and MSc. in Agronomy.

Through Adubiifa Network Company (ANC), a multi-media literary, theatre, and movie company, he employs performance theatre as a means to drive change.

His productions have gained recognition from major players like the Wole Soyinka International Cultural Exchange (WSICE) and the Centre for Black and African Arts and Civilization (CBAAC).

Onadele’s name continues to resonate in the literary space, where calls for major shifts and changes in Nigeria keeps growing louder.

Politics / The Weight Of Corruption: How Nigeria's Leaders Are Failing The Nation - Makolo by PENTALK360(m): 4:49pm On Aug 12
By Shamsudeen Abubakar Makolo
12th August 2024

Abuja, Nigeria – Nigeria, a nation renowned for its rich cultural heritage and abundant natural resources, has been plagued by corruption, perpetuated by those in positions of power and influence. From religious leaders to traditional rulers, family heads, and politicians, the cancer of corruption has spread far and wide, crippling the nation's progress.

Religious leaders, once esteemed for their moral guidance, have fallen prey to the temptations of wealth and power. Many now exploit their pulpits to accumulate wealth rather than preach righteousness. Their flamboyant lifestyles, often financed by their congregations, are a stark contrast to the poverty and suffering of their followers.

Traditional leaders, custodians of Nigeria's cultural heritage, have also fallen prey to corruption. Some use their positions to extort money from their subjects, while others collude with corrupt government officials to embezzle funds meant for community development.

Family heads, once pillars of discipline and integrity, now prioritize material wealth over moral values. The emphasis on wealth and status has led to a breakdown in family structures, as younger generations are encouraged to pursue riches at all costs.

Politicians, elected to serve the people, have become notorious for their extravagant lifestyles. Embezzlement, nepotism, and cronyism are rampant, with many using public funds to finance their lavish lifestyles. The disconnect between the ruling elite and the masses is staggering, as politicians flaunt their wealth while the majority struggle to survive.

The consequences of corruption are far-reaching. Nigeria's economy suffers, infrastructure crumbles, and essential services like healthcare and education are neglected. The future of the nation is mortgaged to the greed of its leaders.

To break free from this cycle of corruption, Nigerians must demand accountability from their leaders. Collective action is needed to create a culture of transparency, where leaders are held responsible for their actions. Only then can Nigeria hope to reclaim its lost glory and build a brighter future for all.

This collaboration was formally launched on July 16, 2024, and marks a significant step towards revitalizing the soybean industry.

The soybean shortage has led to increased feed production costs for poultry farming, as much of Nigeria's soybeans are being exported. In response, Amo Byng Nig Ltd. is stepping in to support local farmers by providing essential farming inputs and committing to purchase the soybean at harvest. This initiative aims to stimulate local production, improve raw material availability, and reduce production costs.

As part of this pilot program, Amo Byng Nig Ltd. has equipped 300 farmers with inputs to cultivate soybean across 1,500 hectares in the Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State. Our goal is to stimulate local production and alleviate the raw material shortage.”

Dr. Ayoola Belgore, Managing Director of Amo Byng Nig Ltd., highlighted the broader vision of the initiative: “While this pilot program marks a significant step forward, our vision extends beyond this initial phase. We are committed to expanding its reach and bringing its benefits to other states in the near future.”

Mr. Adedamola Adeyeye, Head of Business at Amo Byng Nig Ltd., underscored the comprehensive support provided to farmers: “Alongside providing essential inputs, we are dedicated to offering technical support and training throughout the production period to ensure farmers are well-equipped for success.”

Mrs. Oloruntoyosi Thomas, Kwara State Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, showed appreciation to the company and reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to supporting the project and local farmers.

The event also saw the presence of key stakeholders including Mrs. Funke Sokoya, Permanent Secretary, Kwara State Ministry of Agriculture, Mr. Shuib Alawaye, Coordinator of Farmers Group, and Mr. Solomon Olawoyin, Kwara State Chairman of the Soybean Growers Association.

This partnership represents a significant advancement in agricultural collaboration and holds promise for revitalizing soybean production in Nigeria, paving the way for a more sustainable and cost-effective poultry feed industry.

Politics / Government Announces $915 Minimum Wage: See Effective Date by PENTALK360(m): 11:06am On Jul 11
Australia’s Fair Work Commission has announced a minimum wage increase to $915.90 per week for workers. The Australian government said the minimum wage rise took effect on July 1, 2024. This represents a 3.75 percent rise in the National Minimum Wage, amounting to $24.10 per hour.

The increase is expected to bolster compensation amid economic shifts and inflation, benefiting both local workers and international work visa applicants. For employers, meeting or exceeding these wage standards enhances their ability to attract and sponsor skilled overseas workers.

This adjustment is particularly pivotal for occupations covered by Modern Awards, which dictate industry-specific minimum pay rates and conditions. The last minimum wage increase by the Australian government was announced in July 2023.

Meanwhile, in Nigeria, the government and workers under the aegis of organized labour failed to agree on a minimum wage after the statutory five years expired in April 2024. The Nigerian government agreed to pay N62,000 as a new minimum wage, which is a 100 percent increase compared to the current N30,000 minimum wage. However, Nigerian workers proposed a new minimum wage of N250,000. Consequently, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu stepped down the new minimum wage proposal by its tripartite committee to allow for further discussion.

Religion / Primate Elijah Ayodele's Prophecies On Nigeria's Future by PENTALK360(m): 6:18am On Jul 07
Lagos, Nigeria – The leader of INRI Evangelical Spiritual Church, Oke Afa, Lagos, Primate Elijah Ayodele, has stated that Nigeria's problems extend beyond spirituality and prayers.

During the unveiling of his 30th annual prophecy book, "Warnings To the Nations" (WTN), on Saturday, 6th of July, 2024, Primate Ayodele emphasized that mere lip service and reliance on prayers will not resolve the country's issues, predicting severe predicaments ahead if proactive measures are not taken.

"A million pastors can't pray for Nigeria to work. Prayer is not the solution, but we must be ready to take proactive measures," Ayodele asserted.

In his prophecy book, Ayodele foresees a political coup against President Tinubu as 2027 approaches and urges the President to prioritize his health. He claims that Nigeria's security challenges are man-made and predicts an eventual division of the country, initiated by the Northerners, without a bloodbath.

Ayodele also highlighted internal conflicts within the People's Democratic Party (PDP), predicting its dissolution before 2027 if Wike's influence and fight for survival are not addressed. He stated that Atiku Abubakar cannot secure victory for the PDP and warned that Peter Obi's presidency would bring more misfortune to Nigeria.

Regarding the upcoming gubernatorial election in Ondo State, Ayodele declared that PDP's candidate, Agboola Ajayi, is wasting his time and resources, asserting that he will not win the November 2024 election.

Business / Why Investors Will Buy Fidelity Banks Offers, By Capital Market Stakeholders by PENTALK360(m): 7:34am On Jun 24
Fidelity Bank Plc started its N127.1 billion combined rights and public offers to a rousing support from the investing public as key capital market stakeholders recalled the symbolic importance of Fidelity Banks impressive growths and investor-friendly disposition over the years.

From the Nigerian Exchange (NGX) to stockbrokers, investors and customers; the N127.1 billion combined rights and public offer received unreserved recommendations, with industry thought leaders citing the performance of Fidelity Bank in its core banking operations and as a quoted company at the stock market.

They said Fidelity Banks N127.1 billion combined rights and public offer was the right way for the nations banking recapitalisation exercise to start as the bank, which has the highest corporate governance rating and an average annual capital gain of more than 100 per cent at the stock market, has strong appeal to the investing public.

Fidelity Bank is offering a rights issue of 3.2 billion ordinary shares of 50 kobo each at N9.25 per share. The bank is also simultaneously offering 10 billion ordinary shares of 50 kobo each to the general investing public at N9.75 per share.

The acceptance and application lists for the rights issue and public offer, which opened on Thursday, June 20, 2024, are scheduled to close on Monday, July 29, 2024. The rights issue has been pre-allotted on the basis of one new ordinary share for every 10 existing ordinary shares held as at the close of business on Friday, January 05, 2024.

The Doyen of Stockbrokers, the oldest practicing stockbroker, Alhaji Rasheed Yussuff, said Fidelity Bank has good records going for it with its history of impressive growth and profitability and dividend payments.

According to him, the bank is known to the market as a good investment, with evident records of impressive returns and corporate responsibility.

Yussuff, who was already a leading stockbroker and managing director of Trust Yields Securities Limited in 2004-2005 when Fidelity Bank launched its initial public offering (IPO) and listed its shares at the stock market, said the bank has been hitting all positive records that should encourage investors to buy more into it.

Referencing the banks impressive returns, Yussuff, who has more than five decades in the capital market and was principal dealing clerk for ICON Limited/ICON Stockbrokers in 1976, particularly noted that Fidelity Bank has been paying good dividends.

Chairman, Association of Securities Dealing Houses of Nigeria (ASHON), Mr Sam Onukwue, who recalled the founding days of Fidelity Bank in 1987, said he had watched Fidelity Bank sustained commendable growth trajectory over the years.

He said the bank has shown exceptional growth and resilience, rising from being a private merchant in 1987 to becoming one of the largest, publicly quoted commercial banks in Nigeria. Fidelity Bank is one of the seven Nigerian banks with international banking licences.

Onukwue, who is also managing director of Mega Equities Limited, said Fidelity Banks history of performance underlines the strength of its management, noting that the bank has proven to be able to keep investors trust.

Chairman, Nigerian Exchange (NGX), Mr. Ahonsi Unuigbe said the combined offer marked a pivotal moment for the bank and the financial services sector.

This is a testament to Fidelity Banks unwavering commitment to strengthening its own capital base and ensuring sustainable growth through amazing roles played by all of the professional parties to this transaction, Unuigbe, an investment banker and former director at Standard Bank, said.

He said the new banking recapitalisation is aimed at bolstering the resilience and stability of the nations financial institutions.

According to him, the ongoing recapitalisation has set robust minimum capital requirements that will ensure Nigerian banks are not only more solvent, but also capable of supporting the growth and development of the economy.

Acting Chief Executive Officer, Nigerian Exchange (NGX), Mr. Jude Chiemeka, commended Fidelity Bank for its performance and willingness to avail the investing public of every relevant information.

He assured that the NGX remains committed to supporting companies like Fidelity Bank in its quests to deepen the capital markets and fostering an environment conducive to sustainable growth and innovation.

Founder, KAM Holding, Dr Kamoru Yusuf, said Fidelity Bank has shown to be an exceptional bank with focus on the development of Nigerian economy and companies.

He said investing in Fidelity Bank will be an investment in the growth of Nigerian economy and companies like KAM Holding, the nations largest wholly indigenous metal and steel production company.

Yusuf, whose group has metamorphosed into a global business conglomerate operating in three countries across two continents, confirmed that KAM Holding has benefited immensely from financial supports from Fidelity Bank.

Yusuf, who was physically present at a session at the NGX to present facts behind the offer to the investing public, underlined the relationship between increased capital for a business-focussed bank like Fidelity Bank and the overall development of the Nigerian economy.

Addressing the investing public at the NGX, Managing Director, Fidelity Bank Plc, Dr Nneka Onyeali-Ikpe, reiterated the commitment of the bank to delivering impressive returns to shareholders and supporting the growth of the Nigerian economy.

She explained that the new capital raising by Fidelity Bank was driven by its proactive business expansion plan having secured shareholders approval to raise new equity funds as early as August 2023. The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN)s directive on new minimum capital was released in March 2024.

The offer will increase our capacity to support our customers and their businesses. In summary, this capital raise will help our customers to grow, their businesses to thrive, and their economy to prosper, Onyeali-Ikpe said.

She assured that with its groundswell of supports from enthusiastic shareholders, customers and stakeholders, the bank is on course to achieving the N500 billion new minimum capital base, which will clearly confirm the bank, beyond any doubt, as one of the biggest banks in Nigeria.

Onyeali-Ikpe noted that being the first bank to launch offer out of the many banks in Nigeria after the CBN directive, Fidelity Bank has shown again to be a pace-setter.

According to her, Fidelity Bank seeks the CBN recapitalization directive as a significant opportunity for a stronger and more resilient banking industry.

We have embraced the challenge as a catalyst to propel us, towards a long-term vision of becoming a market leader across every product that we offer and segment that we sell, not just in Nigeria, but as an international bank, Onyeali-Ikpe said.

She said the proceeds from the N127.10 billion capital raising exercise would be instrumental in achieving its strategic growth plan.

She highlighted that the funds, firstly, would be deployed to drive, business growth and regional expansion.

We will strategically expand our footprints within and outside Nigeria to serve as a broader customer base and to unlock new market opportunities.

Secondly, we will have what we call technological transformation. We are committed to leveraging proprietary technology to improve operational efficiency and deliver exceptional customer service.

Thirdly, we intend to diversify and grow. By investing in information technology (IT) infrastructure and product distribution channels, we will aim to diversify our earnings base through digitalization and business expansion, Onyeali-Ikpe said.

She said the management recognised the importance of investors and are committed to delivering value to them as well.
Our track record of accelerated growth and consistent dividend payment is a testament to this, Onyeali-Ikpe said.

A recent review had shown that Fidelity Bank outperformed all major market indices for measuring returns at the Nigerian stock market, with the banks average annual return over the past five years twice the average return by the overall market and almost four times of average return in the banking sector.

A review of official trading reports at the Nigerian stock market showed that investors in Fidelity Bank have earned more than 507 per cent in capital gains over the past five years, between May 31, 2019 and May 31, 2024
Fidelity Banks share price rose by 507.14 per cent over the period, representing average annual capital gain of 101.43 per cent. This significantly exceeds all other major return benchmarks, including the banking sector.

With 507 per cent capital gain in five years and average annual gain of more than 100 per cent, the return analysis implies that investment in Fidelity Bank is more attractive than other class of assets, including fixed-income securities such as government and corporate bonds; real estate investment and mutual funds among others.

These returns underscore Fidelity Banks immense value as a stock for all times, helping investors to hedge against inflation while preserving significant long-term value.

The high divisible nature of shares investment and high free float of Fidelity Bank, which makes the banks shares easily available, underline the bank as a most attractive investment option for all cadres of investors- small, medium and high networth; retail and institutional investors.

The All Share Index (ASI) - the common, value-based index that tracks all share prices at the Nigerian Exchange (NGX), which is widely regarded as Nigerias benchmark for equities market, recorded a five-year return of 219.61 per cent, an average annual return of 43.9 per cent.

Contrary to the significantly above average performance of Fidelity Bank, the NGX Banking Index-which tracks the banking sector, doubled by 120.53 per cent over the five-year period, representing average annual return of 24.11 per cent, more than 77 percentage points below Fidelity Banks average return.

Two other major price indices- the NGX 30 Index and NGX Main Board Index, recorded five-year cumulative return of 185.73 per cent and 265.6 per cent respectively, representing average annual gain of 37.15 per cent and 53.1 per cent respectively.

The NGX 30 Index tracks share prices of the 30 largest companies at the stock market while the NGX Main Board Index represents the largest and most diversified group of listed companies at the stock exchange. Fidelity Bank is quoted on the main board, like most other major banks and companies at the stock market.

The average annual return of 101.43 per cent underlines that Fidelity Bank provides substantial return for investors, even where such investors had borrowed money at the ruling interest rate and the invested fund was adjusted for impact of inflation rate.

Nigerias inflation rate peaked at a high of 33.69 per cent in April 2024 while the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN)s Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) recently increased the Monetary Policy Rate (MPR), otherwise known as benchmark interest rate, to 26.25 per cent.
Fidelity Banks share price, which closed May 31, 2019 at N1.68 per share, rose successively to N10.20 per share by the end of May 2024.

The ASI had, during the period, rose from its opening index of 31,069.37 points to close weekend at 99,300.38 points. The NGX Banking Index rose from 361.57 points to 797.37 points. The NGX 30 Index, which opened the period at 1,286.68 points, closed the period at 3,676.44 points. The NGX Main Board Index appreciated from 1,267.54 points to close weekend at 4,634.31 points.
