Thus, Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries (US) successfully prosecuted its claims against her which did not last for a year. The US jury returned a unanimous verdict in favor of Mountain of Fire USA and its three pastors, Grace Ugeh, Kunle Ladipo and Adekunle Adekola.

The case thus represents a victory for Mountain of fire and miracles ministries, its local pastors and the General Overseer. The unanimous jury also awarded to Mountain of Fire USA the sum of Fifty Thousand US Dollars ($50,000) which is the full amount of all damages it claimed in the suit. The jury found that the postings of Ms. Ashekun had defamed Mountain of Fire and shown its pastors in a false light.

Mountain of Fire’s lead counsel Gilbert Garcia said that Mountain of Fire was gratified that the jury found in favor and vindicated the position of the ministry.

Military intervention in politics and the overthrow of democratically elected governments has become a growing trend again again.

A former Nigerian military head of state once stated in an interview that he has no regrets about the coup he led then because it was a trend at the time, and this trend has now returned to Africa again.

Since the summit of African leaders in early 2020 (with virtual meetings in 2021), successful military coups have taken place in Mali (twice), Chad, Guinea, Burkina Faso, and Sudan, with attempted coups in Madagascar, the Central African Republic, Niger, Guinea Bissau, and potentially Djibouti.

In less than 50 days, there have been successful coups in Niger and Gabon.

Moreover, Africa has witnessed constitutional coups, where incumbents exploited constitutional loopholes to extend their terms, as seen in Guinea, Cote d'Ivoire, and Cameroon.

In Tunisia, the incumbent president exercises power through decrees without adequate institutional checks.

Africa is also grappling with emerging conflicts.

Ethiopia, the continent's second most populous nation, has been engulfed in a major and deadly conflict. Despite the AU appointing a special envoy for the Horn of Africa and engaging in diplomatic efforts, tangible results remain elusive.

In the Sahel region, the zone of instability caused by insurgencies and Islamist extremists has expanded, resulting in loss of life, mass displacement, and widespread suffering.

This has consequently weakened the legitimacy and capabilities of fledgling democratic regimes.

Persistent instability in South Sudan, Libya, and Somalia has shown limited progress, with the AU's involvement often restrained despite its military presence in Somalia.

While each situation possesses unique contextual factors, they share common links to a deficit in democracy and governments inability to provide freedom and peace alongside desired development of citizens.

The in-ability of ostensibly elected governments to deliver on these fronts has resulted in leaders lacking a substantial popular constituency, and the democratic system itself facing challenges.

The structural conditions that have enabled coups and insecurity in various countries prevail in a significant majority of African nations.

Furthermore, the successes and apparent approval of certain coups have established a precedent that could potentially inspire emulation.

However, a future marked by poverty, election manoeuvring, selfish constitutional amendments, insecurity, and susceptibility to coups is not inevitable for Africa.

In truth, the continent continues to witness the tenacity of democracy in countries like Malawi and Zambia.

Effectively addressing these challenges and embarking on a trajectory toward peace, freedom, and sustainable development and thriving of democracy hinges on three fundamental factors.

Firstly, there must be a transformative shift in the mindset of African politicians and heads of states.

Secondly, resolute actions are imperative to expedite economic, security, and political integration across the continent.

Thirdly, the AU and ECOWAS must establish laws to limit the tenure of any elected individual in office for presidents.

There is palpable tension in the Niger Delta region as the Chairman of the Niger Delta First Phase Ex-agitators’ Leadership Forum, Bayelsa State Chapter, High Chief. Charles Kurobo, has raised the alarm that the Presidential Amnesty Programme (PAP), has delisted the running mate to the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Bayelsa State from its payroll.

According to him, the investigation of the forum revealed that the Interim Administrator of the PAP, Gen. Barry Ndiomu (rtd), without any reasonable course directed that all the entitlements of the APC Guber running mate, Great Joshua MacIver, who was the first to embrace the amnesty program with over 200 followers, should be withdrawn.

Several attempts to reach the amnesty office for comments proved abortive at the time of filling this report, however, the ex-agitators have said that they may be forced to resort to extreme measures to resolving the anomalies since efforts to make the PAP boss see reasons with them has continued to fall on deaf ears.

The group said that the height of the controversy is when the PAP claimed that Great Maciver, a major critical stakeholder of the first phase ex-agitators who surrendered arms alongside his foot soldiers numbering well above 200 from his own personal camp and have remained beneficiaries of the programme with their ID Card numbers and monthly stipends is no longer part of the programme.

Kurobo read "sequel to appeals and complains concerning the style and gross lack of integrity of the Presidential Amnesty Program (PAP) office under the current administrator, we are writing to notify the National Security Adviser (NSA) of the lingering controversies between the office and its beneficiaries.

"His actions has continued to put pressure on the leadership of the forum with limited resources to douse the tension while calls for the attention of Ndiomu has continuously fallen deft ears and we have almost exhausted the immediate and most preferred formal means of communication in trying to reach out to the leadership of the PAP as beneficiaries and stakeholders of the Region.

"We have been receiving series of complains over non payment of monthly stipends from a large number of the PAP beneficiaries which has kept us awake most nights and while we continue to apply corporate and more responsible measures of going about it.

"The Interim Administrator has further dared us to claim that one of our own, De-Great Joshua Maciver, a major critical stakeholder of the first phase ex-agitator who surrendered arms alongside his foot soldiers numbering well above 200 from his own personal Camp alone were captured and have remained beneficiaries of the programme with their ID Card numbers and monthly stipends.

"Yet, Ndiomu deem them unworthy, according to his media publications, such critical major stakeholder who is a popularly and notably well known leader in the PAP Database is suddenly not on the database of the PAP, a situation which has made Gen, Ndiomu feel he is a political tool by this singular act, making us feel he has bitten more than enough!

"Why Bayelsa? Why now ? Would Gen. Barry Ndiomu had done same if Joshua Maciver shared his political interest? Or If Ex-militants are not fit for political offices across the region, why then do we have one of our own (Rt. Hon Abraham Ingobere) as speaker of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly ?

"We are appealing and looking up to the NSA, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, with the hope that a swift action will be taken to avert the crisis Ndiomu is trying to create because we feel pushed too close to the edge already. We will not be swayed by Ndiomu as it has become clear that he is not on the side of Peace."

President Bola Tinubu has written to the National Assembly to seek an amendment to the 2022 supplementary appropriation Act to allow the Federal Government to source N500 billion for palliative to cushion the effect of subsidy removal.

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, who read the president’s letter during plenary on Wednesday, said the money would be sourced from the 2022 supplementary Appropriation Act of N819.5 billion.

The letter was titled: “Request for the amendment of the 2022 appropriation Act”, and reads, “I write to request the approval of the House of Representatives for an amendment of the 2022 appropriation Act in accordance with the law.

“The request has become necessary in other to source funds to provide necessary palliatives to cushion the effect of the recent removal of fuel subsidy in Nigeria.

“The sum of N500 billion only has been extracted from the 2022 appropriation act of N819.536 for the provision of palliatives to Nigerians to cushion the effect of fuel subsidy removal. I expect that the House will speedily consider the request.’’

The speaker said the lawmakers would consider Tinubu’s request at plenary on Thursday and asked members who will make contributions to be prepared to do so.

He is also a Member of the Nigeria Institute of Estate Surveyors and Valuers (NIESV) and Real Estate Developers Association (REDAN) among others. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s led Federal Government has announced that the government can no longer bear the financial burden of universities in the country.

PENTALK360 reports that during a media briefing in Abuja on Wednesday, Permanent Secretary for the Federal Ministry of Education, Andrew David Adejo, emphasised that while universities already enjoy autonomy, they lack financial autonomy.

Adejo explained, “Whether we like it or not, the government can no longer foot the bill for universities. That is why we are pursuing private-public partnerships. The universities already have autonomy; what they lack is financial autonomy. Once they obtain it, they will be able to address this issue, and the government is actively working towards that goal.”

In addition to this development, President Tinubu has instructed relevant stakeholders to ensure the disbursement of student loans by the end of the September/October 2023/2024 Academic Session.

Addressing some speculations, Adejo clarified that an inter-ministerial committee would be inaugurated next week to streamline the loan application process, aiming to provide loans to students within six weeks.

He also emphasised that the loan scheme would not solely benefit public school students, as private school students also deserve the opportunity to access the financial support.

Adejo highlighted the need to cover not only tuition fees but also other expenses, such as accommodation and living costs.

“We want to ensure that the loan scheme sustains students throughout their education. It’s not just about paying tuition; it’s about providing a comprehensive solution to support students in their academic journey,” Adejo stated.

He further emphasised that the current act aims to learn from past mistakes, where there were more defaulters than successful loan repayments.

“You can’t give someone a loan and say, pay tuition without sustaining his school. No, you have to get accommodation; even if tuition fees in public universities are free, you still pay for your accommodation and the federal government would not give you loan that will not make sure you get in school, stay in school and graduate”

“We want the current act to learn from the mistake of the past where there are more defaulters than people that paid the bill, the past is like it is a government money come and take and go, free money but that is not going to be the case with this.”
