Politics / Biafra: Nigeria Risks Full Insurrection, Chatham House Warns Buhari by Peterddavid: 8:38pm On Nov 10, 2017
A UK Think Tank has warned that fresh insurrection by Biafra secessionists would plunge the country into deeper insecurity.
In an article published today, Chatham House said proscriptions and disproportionate responses to groups that express grievances against or oppose the state risk in fact fuelling the causes of these movements and escalating situations – something Nigeria's stretched security forces can ill-afford.
In September Nigeria's military launched Operation Python Dance II, its second military exercise in South East Nigeria this year.....continue reading@http://www.giftnaija.com/2017/11/biafra-nigeria-risks-full-insurrection.html?m=1

Politics / 2019: I’m Ready For Atiku, Others- Buhari by Peterddavid: 8:43am On Nov 04, 2017
President Muhammadu Buhari has thrown an open challenge to his All Progressives Congress, APC, to free the space for other leaders of the ruling party who are eyeing his seat in the 2019 contest. Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar leads the pack of APC chieftains who have shown interest in the next presidential election.

Exclusive details of discussions at the Tuesday's National Executive Committee, NEC, meeting of APC obtained by Saturday Sun from three prominent members of the party's National Working Committee, NWC, who attended the meeting, show that the President threw the challenge soon after the well attended NEC meeting kicked off and motions were being moved for consideration by party leaders.

According to the details, the motion seeking an automatic second term ticket for Buhari was the first at the meeting and it was moved by a party chieftain from the North, simply identified as Alhaji Nosiru. Former Zamfara state governor, Senator Ahmad Sani Yerima, seconded the motion. At that point, it was gathered, some state party chairmen at the back of the hall were shouting 'No vacancy in Aso Rock.' President Buhari then raised his two hands and pleaded that the motion be stepped down to avoid closing the space for other aspirants who may be nursing presidential ambition on the platform of the party. "President Buhari intervened after the motion was moved and seconded. He said there will be no need for that because he didn't want the democratic space closed. He said 'let's allow others to contest, that's the beauty of democracy.'

"It was after the President's intervention that Imo state governor, Owelle Rochas Okorocha in his capacity as the Chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum moved the second motion seeking to pass a vote of confidence on Buhari and the party's leadership. Okorocha assured the President that while moving his motion that all the APC governors were ready to go to any length with Buhari and that he can rest assured they will give his aspiration full support and en-bloc", a party leader from the Northwest who is also a member of national caucus of the APC stated.

The presidency has also confirmed this account of what transpired at the NEC meeting. A similar narration was given by the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr Femi Adesina in his article at the back page of this edition of Saturday Sun.

According to the presidential spokesman, "The National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of the All Progressives Congress (APC) held at the party's secretariat in Abuja on Tuesday. I was there. The atmosphere was friendly, almost convivial. At a point, someone moved a motion of confidence in the Buhari administration. The seconder, a former state governor, added to the motion, seeking an endorsement of the President as candidate for second term in 2019. As he raised the motion, I saw the President gesturing, with his two palms downwards. The gesture meant, please, cool down, not now. This is premature. And the National Chairman, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, weighed in, accepting the motion of confidence, and deferring the one on automatic candidacy. Everyone was satisfied."

While stating that what a section of the media reported about discussions at the meeting was largely inaccurate, Adesina said rather than governors shooting down the motion for a second term, it was Buhari who rejected the offer, stressing that "it was the President himself who had dissuaded those who made the move, by his gesture."

Preparations for President Buhari's second term bid went into full swing last weekend when his close allies opened a secretariat for the Buhari Support Organisation, BSO in Abuja from where the re-election campaign activities of the President will be coordinated.

Meanwhile, former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar has said that only Nigerians will determine his fate because of his interest in acts that will help deepen democracy in the country. The ex-VP's spokesman, Mr Paul.. ......continue reading@http://www.giftnaija.com/2017/11/2019-im-ready-for-atiku-others-buhari.html?m=1

Politics / 2019 APC Ticket: SKC Ogbonnia Is First Challenger To Buhari by Peterddavid: 8:40pm On Nov 02, 2017
2019 APC Ticket: Igbo oil tycoon is first challenger to Buhari

The first public challenge in the All Progressives Congress, APC to President Muhammadu Buhari in the 2019 presidential election has emerged with United States based oil tycoon, Dr. SKC Ogbonnia declaring his intention to vie for the presidential ticket of the party.

Ogbonnia, a rabid supporter of Buhari’s 2015 election is the chairman of First Texas Energy Corporation and also the Secretary-General of Nigeria Union Diaspora, NUD a group that projects the interests of the Nigeria community in the United States.

In a statement made available to Vanguard, the Awgu, Enugu State, born businessman said his decision followed consultations among Nigerians and the resolve not to allow what he described as a visionless clique to continue to hold the nation in bondage.
Ogbonnia, a regular contributor to Nigeria issues in national and United States media in the statement said:

“After wide consultations within Nigeria and around the world, I have decided to seek the office of the president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria under All Progressive Congress (APC).

“This decision did not come easy. But there comes a time to say, enough is enough. We can no longer sit idly by while a visionless clique continues to dictate our future. We can no longer sit on the sidelines while the masses, particularly the youth, continue to wallow in abject poverty and despair, despite abundant human and natural resources in the land. We must no longer sit and watch politicians deploy our common wealth to send their families overseas for their education and healthcare while the masses at home have nowhere to go for their welfare. We can do much better.

“But this campaign is not business as usual.
It represents the much-awaited democratic mass revolution to take back our country and make it better for all. The movement calls for a new breed of leaders, including the youth, who have the zeal and the competencies to cope with the demands of the 21st century. The movement calls for a visionary and dynamic leader with the requisite knowledge, preparations, experiences, and the capacity to transform Nigeria to greatness.

“This movement beckons an upright leader who is not part of the status quo—a leader who has the moral audacity to demonstrate consequences for bad behaviour in Nigeria without minding whose ox is gored. Moreover, this critical time in history demands a president who truly believes in the unity of Nigeria—a leader who understands that lasting unity is more attainable through equity, justice, and progress for all.

“Fellow Citizens, now is the time; 2019 is the moment, and I am that leader.
Also encouraging is that there is a wide path to victory. The masses, as well as the international community, yearn for true democratic change in Nigeria.

And we, the masses, are the majority. We have equally become wiser. We shall no longer allow politicians to buy our votesfor their selfish interests. We shall no longer allow them to use ethnicity or religion to divide us as usual. We are united by common faith and the greater good.

“Best of all, we shall fulfill our promises. We shall not be beholden to the selfish wishes of an oligarchy that typically funds Nigerian campaigns. Our team has the resources to fund this campaign—from the wards to the national level. What we need, instead, is God’s guidance and active support from the masses.

“The decision to continue with APC is quite in order. To encourage strong opposition activity and efficient checks and balances in governance, Nigeria’s democracy does not need too many political parties. Therefore, having made a defining history by displacing a dominant corrupt party from power, APC remains a beacon of hope for our democratic future.

“But we shall reposition the party as a model for true change in line with its founding principles. We are well set to provoke a paradigm shift in the APC to meet the yearnings of the masses.

“Fellow Nigerians, this movement is not about me. It is not about east, west, north or south. It is not about this zone or that zone. The movement is all about our inner conscience as Nigerians. It is about the future of our beloved country. It is about making Nigeria great for all. And we will win, God’s willing.”
