Foreign Affairs / Obama Is Not Anti-christ by popsnar(m): 2:32pm On Jan 26, 2009
The Prelate of the Methodist Church Nigeria, Rt. Rev. Sunday Makinde, has said that the belief in some religious quarters that American President, Mr. Barack Obama, is the anti-Christ spoken of in the Bible is not true.

Makinde said this in a statement made available to our correspondent on Sunday.

He also spoke on the forthcoming convention of the church billed to hold in Sagamu, Ogun State, from January 28 to 31, tagged ‘The church in a troubled world‘.

According to him, “Obama is a Christian and an African. So, where is the anti-Christ coming from? Either anti-Christ or not, God has turned the captivity of Africa and I commend the Americans for the courage to vote for him.

“There is no anti-Christ anywhere. Even if there was an anti-Christ there, we would go there and cleanse it.”

Speaking on the choice of the theme of the programme, the prelate said, ‘There are problems everywhere. In Congo, in the Middle-East, the Niger Delta and the global economic crisis. The end time is coming and that is why we have chosen that topic. There are problems in the world.”

On the criticism that the prayers of the church were not making any positive effect on the society, Makinde said what would have happened if the church did not pray at all could only be left to the imagination.

He said there were so many lessons to be learned from the election of Obama, one of which was that Nigeria had to organise credible elections and understood that elections were not a do-or-die affair‘.

He added that another lesson was that God is the God of the oppressed.

“They took them away as slaves, but they are now ruling. Those who are being oppressed should take heart and learn from this,” he said.

The prelate said that the church was not immune to crisis as it was made up of human beings.
Politics / Let’s Have 48 States by popsnar(m): 2:19pm On Jan 26, 2009
Now that the National Assembly committee on the review of the 1999 Constitution is set to start work, one can easily guess that the creation of more states would feature prominently in the committee’s agenda. Having pondered over the demands across the country for the creation of more states, I have come to the conclusion that having 48 states in the country will be alright. This will translate into the six geo-political zones having eight states each. By extension, the South-West and South-South will have two more states each, while the South-East will have three more states. In the North, the North-East and North Central will have two more states each; and the North-West will have only one additional state.
Crime / Another Lawmaker Escapes Assassination In Ekiti by popsnar(m): 1:39pm On Jan 26, 2009
[flash=200,200][/flash]The representative of Ado-Ekiti constituency 1 in the Ekiti State House of Assembly, Mr. David Taiwo, of the opposition Action Congress, on Saturday night escaped the assassins’ bullets.
Taiwo’s residence in the Adehun area of the Ekiti State capital was invaded by hired killers but he managed to escape being shot.
The matter was immediately reported to the police with the Commissioner of Police, Ekiti Command, Mr. Chris Ola, assuring that thorough investigations would be carried out.
Penultimate Saturday, the Ado-Ekiti residence of another AC lawmaker, Mr. Abiola Olowokere, representing the Ekiti South-West constituency 2, was invaded by assassins, but he was not at home.
Also on January 20, the AC Leader in the House, Mr. Funminiyi Afuye, said hired killers were after him and other opposition party lawmakers and leaders.
The Deputy Speaker of the Ekiti House of Assembly, Mr. Saliu Adeoti, also of the AC, while addressing a news conference in Ado-Ekiti on Sunday, said there were plans to assassinate the opposition lawmakers, especially the vocal ones.
Adeoti said that the people of the state would no longer accept the police’s robbery theory in case of any attack on the opposition politicians by assassins.
The Ekiti AC, in a statement by its spokesman, Mr. Yemi Adaramodu, in Ado-Ekiti on Sunday, warned against further attacks on its lawmakers.
The party also called on the law enforcement agencies to arrest the state’s descent to anarchy.
The AC said, ”Ekiti is fast becoming a Golgotha, where perceived opposition persons are marked for crucifixion. Three AC legislators have just played host to suspected assassins, who demanded nothing, but their precious lives.
”Messrs Afuye, Olowokere, Taiwo and their families have bitter stories to tell on their encounters with these devilish roughnecks, who have been paid to exterminate them as political ransoms to appease the oracles of do-or-die politics.
”We have raised the alarm earlier that the AC leaders are endangered, but our cries have deliberately not been heard by the concerned agencies.”
The party added that in spite of the alleged takeover of the polity by hired killers and robbers, it would not abandon its responsibilities.
Meanwhile, Adeoti has described his January 20, 2009 arraignment in absentia for alleged illegal possession of firearm as state persecution and a frame-up.
He said that his gun’s licence was genuine and valid till date as earlier confirmed by the commissioner of police and the state’s Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Mike Akindipe.
Adeoti, while addressing a news conference in Ado-Ekiti on Sunday, said that he would be intimidated by the machinations of his enemies.
Politics / ‘yar’adua Will Lead Beyond 2011’ by popsnar(m): 12:56pm On Jan 26, 2009
The Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr. Michael Aondoakaa, on Sunday said there was nothing wrong with the health of President Umaru Yar‘Adua to necessitate northern elite shopping for his replacement.

Aondoakaa specifically said that the President was so fit that after his four year first term, he ”will still be around” to lead Nigeria.

The minister, who spoke with our correspondent on the telephone, said it was the figment of the imagination of those thinking that the President needed to be replaced by the Peoples Democratic Party if the party desired to win the 2011 presidential election.

Aondoakaa said, ”It is a figment of the imagination of those who are nursing such ideas. There is nothing like that in the offing.

“President Ya‘Adua is in good condition of health; he is in full control of his government. He will serve his four-year-term to the fullest, God willing. And by the grace of God, he will still continue to be around to take on the challenges of leading Nigerians to see peace and prosperity even after his first four years as the President.”

The presidency was said to have been rattled by reports that some political heavyweights in the North had commenced the process of shopping for an acceptable presidential candidate in view of perceived ill-health of the President.

Many politicians were also said to have been worried by the seeming poor performance of the President in his more than one year and a half in office.

Sources had said that some of the politicians involved in the search had piled pressure on former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar to reconcile with his former boss, former President Olusegun Obasanjo.

The calculation of the northern political elite, according to sources, was that if the two closed ranks, the former vice-president could return to the Peoples Democratic Party to contest the next presidential election on its platform.

The meeting between Obasanjo and his vice last week was said to have been part of the move to replace Yar‘Adua with another candidate in the build up to the 2011 presidential election.

Comments by Obasanjo during the parley in Abeokuta, Ogun State capital, that former political office holders should come together to rescue the country from the present situation was said to have been a tacit indictment of Yar‘Adua‘s administration.

The emerging camps in the build-up to the 2011 presidential election was said to have been further reinforced on Saturday at the wedding of the President‘s daughter, Nafisat, in Katsina.

The decision by Obasanjo and the former vice-president to ride in the same vehicle was believed to have sent another strong statement to Yar‘Adua that the two were up to some games.

In addition, the fact that former military president, General Ibrahim Babangida, reportedly rode in the same car with Yar‘Adua was interpreted to mean an emerging alliance between the President and the former military president.

There are insinuations that both Yar‘Adua and former President Olusegun Obasanjo had fallen out with each other over the President‘s handling of certain issues of national interest.

Obasanjo was said to have been bothered by the fact that those who criticised his choice of Yar‘Adua in 2007 are being proved right with the alleged poor performance of his successor.

Already, Abubakar‘s parley with Obasanjo is said to be creating disquiet within the Action Congress on the platform of which the former vice-president contested in 2007.

Last Thursday National Executive Committee meeting of the party had provided members with the opportunity to condemn the visit especially because Abubakar did not take the party into confidence.
