Macky can you please elucidate more on this? I will soon be rounding my CS degree in a CC. Thank you.

Due to bias in different forms, your resume should look like that of someone that was born in Murica.

This is with respect to locations/addresses majorly. Eg Lagos, abia, Nigeria etc except your school na Univ of Nigeria cheesy

Hope you did some internships before graduation...

Also note that you need to focus an equal amount of energy and possibly more to get a job before graduation.

What use is a certificate with 4.0 if you cannot exchange it for USD?? grin

That na waste ooo

Noted

thank you

Networking salaries I see online are peanuts. undecided

WGU is an online university that runs a capability mode of education and it is non-profit and well accredited established by former American Governors... I saw when you were saying something about networking that’s why I asked.. in networking/Cybersecurity certifications are more important than degrees.. WGU combines both certifications and degree and they pay for the necessary certifications for you and their fees are very cheap..if you can transfer some courses from your cc, plus general education requirements from previous degree., you can have a bsc in one year with all the necessary certifications with less than 7k dollars.. with that combination, you be hotcake

Course load for a Data Science program will be heavy while still being employed full-time that's why I am looking at toning it down to Analytics...

Options are numerous so I will strike when the time is right.
Btw, you are very knowledgeable on achieving educational dreams on a budget! cheesy

Back to this discussion, for several months, I have been seeing network engineer postings for salaries around $50k and I am shocked about how they could be paid 'so little' for skills my head tells me are quite complex.

So I found other iterations of the field that pay more:
Hardware development, hardware validation, systems development, hardware test etc.

Go to Amaz0n jobs + Find careers + Aws + teams...
Check job descriptions under these teams: 1. Hardware Development, 2. Security and 3. Systems Development

People trying to break into Networking or Cybersecurity are of the opinion that it calls for numerous certifications and years of experience.

If you want to make money in networking jobs.. try and get experience in configuration of relevant network devices .. like CISCO ISE, Fortigate, normal cisco routers and switches, others are infoblox for DNS and DHCP.. from there learn network side of cloud especially GOOGLE and AWS because large companies use them here as main cloud carrier. Top it off with certifications. You should be able to secure jobs that pays 110k in moderate cheap states like TX, NC and VA.

In all sha...me sef wan switch to data analytics... this network engineer no dey too pay .. my colleagues in the same company earn almost twice what I make from the company... guys in cybersecurity and data science are really balling here.

Good Evening Sir Makky,
I believe you forgot to respond to my query fully the last time due to your busy schedules.
I'm currently processing my application for masters in HealthCare informatics at Middle Tennessee state university. (GRE/TOEFL WAIVED)

Quick background - I'm a 23 year old medical lab scientist(Bachelors degree) and data scientist (Dataquest and google certified). I am proficient in Python, R, SQL, Excel, tableau etc with years of experience in the data world.

Its clear you are a brilliant force and I really need your guidance or tips on how to secure this admission, get quality references (heard it increases the chances of being admitted) etc

Thank you!

Elnon...
I'll try to chip in to your question when I'm on my laptop. Long posts via mobile is laborious.
It SEEMS most schools have waived GRE and Toefl for obvious coviK related reasons.

Thanks Mogenerous for your pointers.

Cybersecurity requires too much experience to smell the field. undecided

I am not switching to networking, my current job in hyperscale storage/computing hardware manufacturing is related to it.
I need high pay but small work cheesy
Software engineering = highest pay + high pressure + high stress. I don't want this combo.

Still considering sticking to Manufacturing Quality + Analytics OR just moving to Analytics full-time...
At the back of my mind, I don't need a career path that can be automated by software so I deh drag foot from a full switch to Analytics.

No one can say with 100% certainty what will happen, we can only predict.

1. Depends on what school and field you wanna concentrate it. Some schools/programs are well funded.
Schools also have multiple admission sessions.

2. As an example, Cut off for Fall/August 2021 application submission for some schools is Nov/Dec 2020. Early birds grab all the program fundings as some schools do 'rolling admissions'.
Admission decision takes months, visa interview has a lead time of 2 to 3 months. Most people get their visa in hand by May to June.
Complete the analysis and plan accordingly.

3. And finally, "who no go, no know". Contact professors, Put in your application early and expect the best.
There are threads for US Student Visa on this Travel section. It's loaded with info.

How Yoruba deh take talk am? Eleyi badt gan! cheesy

I believe with your profile, you have scaled thru the 'getting admitted' stage as your profile is a good fit from my assessment.

Admission committees look beyond your references only as they focus on the full application.
My advice would be to apply to one or two more schools to increase your chances and then chase funding aggressively at this early stage.

Hello Elnon,

Would you mind guide me on how to go about becoming a full fledged Data scientist like you?
I've registered on Dataquest but I wonder if there's more I need to do.
I'd appreciate your assistance. I'm sure Macky would address your question fully.
Thanks

High pay but small work smiley smiley Experience tells me that most high paying jobs are high stress as well. As a veteran software guy I can attest to that. No doubt, software dev/programming has been very good to me though. Bottom line is...whatever field you end up in, make sure you learn it very well and become very good at it. Hard work will always pay off. And most of us Nigerians are a very hard working and resilient bunch!
