Doyin Okupe, a former aide to Ex-Presidents, Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan respectively, has given one major reason the North will not support Igbo presidency come 2023.

In a series of tweets on Saturday, Okupe explained that the North are yet to forgive the Igbo over the incidences of 1966 of which one of the high points was the killing of Sardauna of Sokoto in what until today is believed by many people to be an Igbo coup.

The former presidential aide, who has declared his interest to run in the 2023 presidency, pointed out that if the Igbos reach a consensus with the North, in the interest of equity, fairness and national unity, he will shelve his ambition.

“A national consensus for Igbo Presidency cannot evolve until the core north forgives the Igbos for the killing of Sardauna of Sokoto by Nigerian soldiers of igbo extraction in the 1966 Coup.

“If this consensus emerges, in the interest of equity, fairness & national unity, I will shelve my ambition & support whoever is chosen as a candidate by my party.

“However, in the event that this national consensus is not achievable, I WILL RUN FOR PRESIDENT IN 2023 by God’s Grace.

“This is the political Knot only the Igbo leaders must spearhead and with the support of other well meaning Nigerians, resolve with a high level of humility and political dexterity,” he said.

Apart from Ahmadu Bello making himself very clear in that interview
that his Northernization policy was for the Northern Region alone and not for the entire Nigeria, common sense dictated that under the highly decentralized extant structure of those times it wasn't just going to be possible for any individual from one particular region, be he the prime minister or a premier, to impose a particular policy on the entire country unlike the way it has become today courtesy of the unitary system imposed on us by an Igbo army officer who got to power through the back door which he opened with the barrel of a gun. So if Igbos felt that Ahmadu Bello's Northernization policy was negativity affecting those of them resident in the North back then, then the next thing would have been to relocate back home to their Eastern Region and encourage their own premier too to commence Easternization policy for the Eastern Region. And come to think of it, didn't Ahmadu Bello ask the British journalist in that interview if any graduate of Northern origin was employed in either the Eastern or Western public service and he could not give an affirmative answer in all honesty? So it means every regional premier back then was doing exactly what they were accusing Ahmadu Bello of doing just because Ahmadu Bello wasn't pretending about his but was bold and candid enough to admit it before the public glare.
