I remember that game very well and you make a good point about finding a balance but he has never found a balance between both ends of the pitch. If anything, his attacking instinct, especially his ball technique and finding crossing space/ angles have always defined him. He has had good performances on defense but I am worried he is not getting trained on how to defend.

His positioning during defensive schemes makes me worried because his stance make it nearly impossible for him to react to an attacking 1v1 situation. Jamie Carragher, actually made this point, so I had to go back and watch TAA's defensive highlights tonight and many other games and he was correct. TAA is almost standing straight in most 1v1 situation while defending and that is a big fundamental defending issue. Furthermore, every serious team, except my useless Arsenal of course targets his wing looking for ways to exploit the space behind him because he almost strolls out of position and forgets his defensive duties. This is a recurring issue with his awareness.

He is only 22 and should not be seen a finished product and that is where the problem is. Liverpool and England to some extent look at him like he is over 25 and at his ceiling which is worrisome. If he rediscovers his offense/ attack through assists/ goals and important set-pieces, it will once again mask his defensive issues and that is why I am worried.

He is heading the route of M. Alonso / E. Eboue..Fullback players who showed better promise as wingers or winged midfielders. If he finds the balance, then we might be talking about a Marcelo type of player. He needs a good coach within Liverpool to help him find that balance else he is going to regress badly at the defensive end, especially without VVD.
