If u need my candid advice, go back to school. Time n tide wait for no man. No body ever saved money for issues. When I applied to study law at a time we faced terrible family issues after d death of my mum, my elder brother asked me if I want to go suffer in school. At d time, even to feed in a day was a tuck of war let alone school.

Alas, today my determination paid off. I am not just a lawyer but a senior lawyer who nurtured d family to lamplight. Go back to school as advice by ur dad, school isn't a place for a tea party,so being a citadel of learning, u should expect some difficult situation, it's part of d building process.

Now, to be honest, I just clocked 26. I was done with my sec. education way back in 2012. Due to one problem to the other, i couldn't further. I had to involve myself in some menial jobs to sustain myself for the meantime and along the way, i learned phone and computer engineering and i do brush through some very important books occasionally.

This is where I need your wise opinion guys. Dad got into a problem when i was about to finish sec. School and since then, hes been repaying debt till now. Infact, debt has consumed all his salary. He's just borrowing from peter to pay Paul to survive.

And he's still of the opinion that i go to school. I got admission to study pharmacy at OOU in 2018, paid the acceptance fee but couldn't pay school fees and i lost it for good. So he wants me to try again but where will he even see the money when school wahala comes again? He's gonna go the borrowing way again i guess; compounding the problem we have at hand

So I've been thinking....what if i go back to factory work, then get myself a computer and learn programming "frontend development for a start"? I want to dedicate atleast 1 to 2 years to learn it. Then after that, i would proceed to school either on part time or full because i still want to further my education to get the b.sc cert. at the minimum.

Honourable men and women, CONSIDERING THE NIGERIA OF TODAY, i need your wise words at this critical junction of my life.

If I'm done with the programming, can it atleast sustain me a little bit?

Should I faithfully follow my dad's intention or just go through my own plan?

Thanks

Hello,
There is something I want you to master today. Following your mind and gut. You won't lead yourself to the wrong path. Know this.

After knowing that, what is your mind telling you? School or programming?. I advice you use one stone to kill two birds. Gain admission and target cheaper universities eg Oau. The cost of studying in Oau is cheap compared to other universities.

I want you to have this at the back of your mind, you can be WHATEVER YOU CHOOSE TO BECOME.

On a very good note age is not on your side, to be a student without proper financial backbone is not advice able

That your plan on learning about programming is good but you have to put more interest into it,but you will have to augment it with a degree to make it more meaningful .

I know a lot of folks back then in Sec School who didn't have the brain and financial capacity to further their education but who are currently doing much better than us financially, time is too precious to waste, I'm not saying you shouldn't go to school though, I'm just saying you should think it through

@Sheffdon, plan to go to school.

The coding you want to learn isn't time-bound. You can learn it while in school, you can learn it after you graduate, you can learn jt during your holidays.
It requires a high amount of discipline to learn it successfully to the extent that it can become a major source of livelihood for you.

Trust me, when things get "difficult" you'll abandon the coding, and the reasons will seem genuine enough to you. You'll suddenly "realise" that everyone is coding, that the people teaching you are not very professional enough, that you had one other business idea that you invested your money in so you couldn't pay to learn in reputable institutions, that you need a sophisticated laptop, etc etc etc

You'll find excuses and it'll be hard to continue. And one day you'll wake up 4 years gone and you're not earning a decent living from the little you've learnt, you'll be 30 and still no degree or any other fall back option.

Again, plan to go to school. You can learn the coding and all what-not while you're in school.

You can find means to support yourself, so you won't be relying on your dad alone.
Time goes by quickly. You may regret not going to school when you had the chance.

I just broke out of tutorial hell and even if some people claim it's a place every budding programmer will visit, having the experience at the beginning can be detrimental as you might end up losing focus.

It will be a great advantage if you indeed need learn front end programming as you rightly wish to.

I appreciate your dad too making efforts to get you educated, schooling is really brat with money so get skilled, and earn online certification as much as possible. Your schooling will be useless if you can't be self sustainable besides you're of age to leave dad's loins to stay more responsible. Best wishes

Follow your own plan.

At this stage in your life you should not be hoping on people to help you pay your school fees cos most times that help will not come.

School 4 years + NYSC = 5+strikes=6 years, then come out searching for jobs.

Programming >is a year or 2.. You got yourself what will sustain you for a lifetime, no job hunting.. Rather jobs will hunt you.

The decision is yours to make.

Most of them will do worse if they are in your shoes and that is what they will come and give you as advice. Peace!!!

I know, what he needs is the efficiency to research on his own, so he has to do his research, more organization skills in extracting understanding and making use of vast information.

Believe me, we need to develop the ability to research and find answers on our own, the information is there, so we need to understand how to make use of it. I don't think it helps to spoon feed every time, cheesy cheesy cheesy

Programming seems like a good choice of skill. You can build your skills alongside school if you're intending the Bsc part. Also select a Federal uni not OOU or any other biased expensive shitty school. They're all shitty but Federal schools are the better of the shittier! Ugh! I for say my u fashi school, work on a skill but since your papa insist. Polytechnics are not bad too, Federal!

cheesy Nahh. I just know how these things go because I've seen it happen to people around me. People seem to create fancy ideas for themselves when they're trying to escape a more challenging option.

Learning a skill is great, especially an ICT-skill in this 21st century. But it just shouldn't be in exclusion of getting a degree, especially in this Nigeria.

Getting a degree goes beyond the certificate- the grooming, the exposure, the network - and then yes, the certificate, because there's no telling when it will become very important, so why should someone put himself at a disadvantage?

It's really a pity what you went through all these while, having to loose your admission. I like your the fact you are sincere with your situation. Just follow any path that will not add to the financial burden of the family. Discover your passion and follow it. Education is just Academic exercise, it does not guarantee any future. Get on with the programming, be the best you can be at it. The sky will be your limit, you can always get a BSc later in future in a more comfortable way. Good luck!!

From my little experience I would advise you to go for a 9-18 months programming course part time as you can mix up the learning and menial jobs, you also get a certificate for it that you can use to apply for a B.Sc to 200lvl straight.

Having coding skills or a digital marketable skill is the first step as you can try freelance with your skills while pushing for your dream. Goodluck

. 1 Pray to God for his guidance 2 Call your Dad and discuss your plans with him 3 Ask your Dad why he wants you to go back to school and his plans for footing the bills there.Tell him your reservation 4 Both of you should arrive at a reasonable conclusion. Your mother should be part of the discussion if she is around 5 Follow through the decision you make together and commit it into the hand of God The truth is many Nigerians suffer in public schools because of their backriunds and they struggle hard to complete their programme.Yiur dream to be educated will not be an exception .God will do it Just be focused. All will be well.

Bro.... don't hang your hat where your hand can't reach. Find out how those who graduated over the last 5 years are doing. This is 2021... what are your chances of being a top notch programmer? Those who are making a very good living... find out when they got their job and what was the competition like to get that job. Today programmers are a dime a dozen..... are you one that good look has blessed? Sit down and think hard on two things.... supply and demand ... what skill or whatever is in short supply but there is a great demand? I will continue to say in Naija it is competent auto mechanics... but such is never in our books. Thus is just one.... why enter a crowded field? Tell your father you want to be an auto mechanic he will disown you! Younare 26...an adult ... look well before you leap.
