tbh ba ..without mincing words a degree in medicine is better ..right from housemanship money don dey flow ..

"Money don dey flow" indeed!! By that statement it means depending only on what you are paid. Of course you are well paid in housemanship especially if you are doing it in the federal hospital. Likewise same thing for a pharmacist and other health professionals..

The area where pharmacists trump doctors is street hustle. Without hospitals few doctors will live comfortably but without hospitals, pharmacists are steps ahead. Retailership, distributorship, production etc makes all the difference..

You've spoken well.

I dropped a comment on that topic too. I don't remember the exact words I used but I said something about doctors being poorly paid in Nigeria but in a country of the blind, the one-eyed man is king...

In a country where graduates earn 50k a month, the one who earns 200k is the boss.

Both are poorly paid but one is more poorly paid than others.

However, you failed to address the main issue in your post:

You made the decision to read Architecture and later, medical science ON YOUR OWN and not because your mom or pop forced you to. The brother of the fellow in question is being forced by the mom

I understand children may sometimes need counselling but parents should never impose their decisions on their kids, particularly with education, marriage and career.

They may guide and show their kids the "way" but if the kids refuse to follow that path, let it be.

You've done your part. Let them do theirs, else it may end badly, like this guy who spent 10 years reading Medicine in Unilorin before leaving to study Mass Coms in Unilag.

He graduated with a first class in Mass Comm, so he clearly wasn't a dullard, but in the interview, he said his dad forced him to read medicine.: http://motherhoodinstyle.net/2017/01/17/87044/

Forcing a course on a child is a double-edged sword that always ends in "I told you"

The only difference is who's saying it...

The kid will say it if he fails

And the parents will say it if he succeeds

Do you call a shark weak because it cannot hunt on land?

Or you call a lion ineffective because it cannot hunt underwater?

Everyone has their potential and it is best they stick to it. The issue here is not the dude. It's the mom.

As a parent, you can never know your kid's interests and potential even if you think you do. The kids may not know them either but as with everything in life, they'll always find it on their own.

alright my parents kinda forced it till i saw reasons why i should study medicine ....
everything in life is not definite, even those who choose medicine sometimes things may go awry and might be withdrawn .
i think the other guys case was a diffrent because he wasnt interested in science at all ..he couldnt comprehend the complexities .situations like that always turns out bad

REASONS WHY MEDICINE IS GOOD

Getting job easily
Out of poverty cycle
Prestige
Sells abroad like fire
Low unemployment rate
Very attractive and gentle job
Quite fulfilling because you save life

MY PROBLEM WITH MEDICINE

It is over rated because people mistook medicine to be riches
You hardly do or fit into anything else except medicine
They are hardly the richest in every committee
The first purpose of being a doctor is not to make money but to save life
Young people mistake the purpose of being a doctor
Drs are treated badly down here
It can be disastrous when you can't meet up with passing your exams..
All the alternative to medicine that you can be pushed to are quite useless
It causes lots of delays
A successful Dr and a successful Engr can't be compared in terms of wealth
Many are in it because of pride
It's too expensive
Their own unemployment is worst because they are useless in other areas
The rate of growth in medicine is too slow
You hardly work in mind blowing IOCs except Into NGOs or so...only few
They hardly have time for side hustle and social life
You can't work remotely...you must be present
Can Drs actually hit big contracts like Engrs contracts of 100m...1bn...to do what kwanu
Etc

But I still love Medicine and advise anyone who has the brain to go for it....it's worth it.

Op... I agree with you on this. I saw the thread of a guy complaining that his mom wants his jnr brother to study medicine. He doesn't know that what the mum is doing is best for him.

Even me sef, at times I feel that if I had know, I would have studied medicine or medical related courses. I have too many reason to give, but I no get strength to write.

99 percent of my friends who are doctors are practising outside Nigeria. In fact as a doctor, it's very easy for you to leave Nigeria and get a job outside.

Just last Sunday, I over heard a doctor on phone telling a fellow doctor that "e b like say Saudi Arabia na him be the next option now"...

According to him, Saudi Arabia are seeking for doctors, those of them that knows their way will know how to tap into that opportunity.
thank you ..i hope that guy reads through this ...he is playing with a life time opportunity ..does he even know what it means to get medicine in a public university loool

I think this is your own reality and trust me, it does not hold true for everyone. In this same country we live in, we know the amount they pay doctors as hazard allowance. We know how private hospitals badly pay their doctors and we are not unaware of the incessant strikers by doctors working in public hospitals. That said, I think every professional course has an edge and medicine is no exception. A medical doctor stands an equal chance in the job market as a computer engineer or architect etc.

Choices still have rating remember it is: good better best.

Can you live "comfortably" without Food?

When it comes to money, medicine is just good not better nor best take it or leave it. But when you have your own hospital, then it rises to better and at some point BEST in the face of monetary factor.

Rubbish.

Engineering is a lot better than Medicine... Versatility in all area of life rather than to be confined to one paradigm of thought grin

With what I know about Europe and US today Everybody studying Agriculture or Agricultural Engineering should be on Scholarship ,
Or else you will discover your Country Produces nothing and imports everything

No wonder Awolowo insisted on giving Scholarships to Western Region Students to Study Agriculture all over the World

No nation ever developed without developing its Agriculture first

Even Father Abraham was a keeper of Cattle, see how Archaic Cattle Husbandry is about to set off Civil War in Nigeria and yet Nigeria still doesn’t produce enough Meat or Milk for its Population

As George Washington said any Country that cannot feed itself is not fit to be called a Nation

It is Agriculture that Produces so many Raw materials for industry to the extent that a Nation cannot industrialise without it

Medicine and Engineering are very good Courses but Agriculture is Critical for a Nations development and Survival and overlooking it can lead to National disaster

@33bandit How does it feel to study a course after being Jambed 5, times and being paid far less than your HR manager that was probably living couples live in the University, being fired every night by a likely unserious dude and not missing any Friday night club, and being able to copy or sort her way through school? If you are happy then fair enough.

My simple advice will be to tow the line of all wise elder ran away. UK door is wide open right now. Express entry to Canada should also be a breeze for you.

Man! I didn’t wanna comment but you’ve said it all, They’re so brain dead, they do not think of the creative talents a child possesses and use that to guide them towards their future, they’d rather follow the crowd controlling their children’s lives after most usually being unhappy in theirs, they see a way to live through the child and force them to follow their unreasonable and usually unfulfilling will, now those that are successfully brainwashed is someone like the OP, his brain has been corroded with archaic and regressive information.

Adonbilivit ho haa! Anyways for me, I would rather study pharmacy than medicine. Reason being pharmacists achieve more in shorter periods after graduation than doctors. Pharmacy can thrive anywhere but a doctor needs some sort of synergy and help to make it soon.
Apart from the Federal Hospitals where doctors are heavily pampered right from their days of housemanship to consultancy, pharmacists are already on the move with or without the hospitals after their internship.

I have many pharmacy friends who are into sales representative stuff, retail and different kind of supplies. They supply drugs to different locations with different demands. Also, once you have drugs, an illness is half cured. And there are consultant pharmacists who are good in what they do that you may not readily need a doctor. Those pharmacology and pharmacodynamics versed guys etc.

As for those saying doctors are in high demand abroad, even so are other health professionals. A consultant doctor friend once revealed that majority of the doctors who travel abroad are those who have been sitting for their consultancy exams repeatedly and not passing it, they moved overseas. I know someone who spent about 5 years but couldn't get his consultancy. He is now in Saudi Arabia. Several of them are in UK too.

The OP is one reason there is so much bitterness existing between doctors and other health professionals. For people like him, it's usually a status thing. I know some village guys who read medicine in school because their families were hell bent on having a doctor as a status symbol. Against someone whose parents allowed to naturally chose medicine as a course, you will see different exhibition of class, temperament, and carriage etc. IT'S VERY WRONG TO CHOOSE A COURSE FOR YOUR CHILDREN AGAINST THEIR NATURAL ABILITIES AND POTENTIALS..

Let me just stop here.

Whoever told you that Doctors left Nigeria because they couldn't pass consultancy exams need psychological evaluation big time. Specialty exams in USA or UK is far more exhaustive than that of Nigeria, with their curriculum far more robust and up to date. It also no easy feat getting into those system.

Medicine also confers much more status than Pharmacy all over. Pharmacist probably make a lot of money because health care in Nigeria is largely unregulated, what then happens if things change.

In all I still advice people to do what they love to do. If the aim is to travel abroad, Nursing probably provides the softest landing.

Cheer and all the best
