Choices still have rating remember it is: good better best.

Can you live "comfortably" without Food?

When it comes to money, medicine is just good not better nor best take it or leave it. But when you have your own hospital, then it rises to better and at some point BEST in the face of monetary factor.

which makes it one of the best tbh

Adonbilivit ho haa! Anyways for me, I would rather study pharmacy than medicine. Reason being pharmacists achieve more in shorter periods after graduation than doctors. Pharmacy can thrive anywhere but a doctor needs some sort of synergy and help to make it soon.
Apart from the Federal Hospitals where doctors are heavily pampered right from their days of housemanship to consultancy, pharmacists are already on the move with or without the hospitals after their internship.

I have many pharmacy friends who are into sales representative stuff, retail and different kind of supplies. They supply drugs to different locations with different demands. Also, once you have drugs, an illness is half cured. And there are consultant pharmacists who are good in what they do that you may not readily need a doctor. Those pharmacology and pharmacodynamics versed guys etc.

As for those saying doctors are in high demand abroad, even so are other health professionals. A consultant doctor friend once revealed that majority of the doctors who travel abroad are those who have been sitting for their consultancy exams repeatedly and not passing it, they moved overseas. I know someone who spent about 5 years but couldn't get his consultancy. He is now in Saudi Arabia. Several of them are in UK too.

The OP is one reason there is so much bitterness existing between doctors and other health professionals. For people like him, it's usually a status thing. I know some village guys who read medicine in school because their families were hell bent on having a doctor as a status symbol. Against someone whose parents allowed to naturally chose medicine as a course, you will see different exhibition of class, temperament, and carriage etc. IT'S VERY WRONG TO CHOOSE A COURSE FOR YOUR CHILDREN AGAINST THEIR NATURAL ABILITIES AND POTENTIALS..

Let me just stop here.

This is your opinion and it doesn't count here.
The person on the front page just spoke about his decision and you came all out to compare doctors and pharmacist.. haba?

To make this clear, many parents who want you to study Medicine do it to be called "Daddy Doctor, mummy doctor". It's a bragging right because my cousin is actually studying Medicine just in 100 level and I see how they move around himgrin. The true parents will tell you the crisis and how to manage it. Would you believe that my senior in school got admission to study Pharmacy via supplementary in UI back in 2015/2016 for missing out on Medicine. She paid the form herself. Her father told her then she should leave the Pharmacy. She hasn't graduated yet but I see her making money via her Pharmacy hustle. She said she's going to open Pharmacy immediately after graduation. She said she has clients and wouldn't risk it for anything. Her Papa still dey manage am
Medicine is good and great because you can do it for life but If you dey find money go do business abeg. Many of parents are Ignorant I swear. Doctors are majorly treatment. Many of them can't use their degree except in "hospital".
Do Medicine if you have the right mindset. If you want money go do oil money

hahaha ..thats why ill keep telling people ..ive not seen anybody who was coerced to study medicine and ends up regretting that life choice

120-200k is the salary range of a young post NYSC doctor in private hospitals in Nigeria.. yet they are complaining the pay is poor.
Pls how many young graduates in other fields earn like this?

I was still serving when I got a job.. had to combine that job with my NYSC .. 2 months later, I passed out of NYSC and concentrated fully on the job, that was 3 years ago.. the pay was 120k at least, there were other benefits though.

If you mention 120k salary today, esp for a young person, it sounds unbelievable.
Medicine forever... I did myself good and married a doctor too. Both of us ran away.

My friend take what I told you. I have read Engineering to the highest level and I know what I am saying. Doctors the world over are highly sought after.

True. Doctors are generally comfortable, and more easily beat the hunger puzzle.

But when Engineers hit, they hit big or even bigger. Yet several Engineers struggle with hunger and poverty. For me, I would go for Medicine as the odds of being comfortable is probably higher

Whoever told you that Doctors left Nigeria because they couldn't pass consultancy exams need psychological evaluation big time. Specialty exams in USA or UK is far more exhaustive than that of Nigeria, with their curriculum far more robust and up to date. It also no easy feat getting into those system.

Medicine also confers much more status than Pharmacy all over. Pharmacist probably make a lot of money because health care in Nigeria is largely unregulated, what then happens if things change.

In all I still advice people to do what they love to do. If the aim is to travel abroad, Nursing probably provides the softest landing.

Cheer and all the best

I like your healthy and mature line of argument anyways, but i still stand by my earlier submissions. I love pharmacy more than medicine. Peace.

If I have the chance and sponsor, I wouldn't mind studying nursing. I once told a suitor then that if we should marry and travel cause he is in USA, that I must study nursing. I dont care about passion, I just want to make money.

You clearly didn't even understand my post. Your hasty desire to counter my line of argument made sure of that.

Doctors simply thrive majorly in hospitals but pharmacists thrive both in hospitals and outside it. At the end the whole efforts, pharmacists have more opportunities than doctors. QED!

Oga , this ur concoction na wa oooo. If u are not there u will never know what it is . Don't ever compare pharmacy with medicine . After internship, most of the pharmacists become sales reps and come to the clinics to advertise their drugs to us with gifts to help them prescribed them .
Please don't confuse people , though everyone can not be medical doctor , we must be very wise in our choices as per course to study. If you do not have people on the top who will fix you up after schooling, please MBBS is the way to go .
I stood my ground , my dad wanted to study engineering, but never regretted standing up to what I saw . As per doctors going abroad , it is not because of failure in part one exam. I'm a senior reg 1 that means passed part one over a year ago , my pay is just about 500k , one of my House officers who is the UK takes home 3200 pounds per month for a start ( about 1.7m) , this is the person that is 4yrs below my class. So what are we talking about ! People migrate because of better pay and good working environments .If you have the capacity and support , please chose medicine ahead of any other course esp if u are a child of nobody!

Even if the doctors failed many times for consultant exam, they still went on to do great things today

I remember one of my Dad's friend then, a constant already
He left Nigeria for US
His colleagues were telling him he should be here and become a professor of medicine but he said no

Today the man is a renowned top professor in the US
He moved his whole family over there and they are by Miles ahead of his colleagues today

A doctor moving abroad is one million times better than staying here
They are extremely well paid and they get to belong to the highest earners there

REASONS WHY MEDICINE IS GOOD

Getting job easily
Out of poverty cycle
Prestige
Sells abroad like fire
Low unemployment rate
Very attractive and gentle job
Quite fulfilling because you save life

MY PROBLEM WITH MEDICINE

It is over rated because people mistook medicine to be riches
You hardly do or fit into anything else except medicine
They are hardly the richest in every committee
The first purpose of being a doctor is not to make money but to save life
Young people mistake the purpose of being a doctor
Drs are treated badly down here
It can be disastrous when you can't meet up with passing your exams..
All the alternative to medicine that you can be pushed to are quite useless
It causes lots of delays
A successful Dr and a successful Engr can't be compared in terms of wealth
Many are in it because of pride
It's too expensive
Their own unemployment is worst because they are useless in other areas
The rate of growth in medicine is too slow
You hardly work in mind blowing IOCs except Into NGOs or so...only few
They hardly have time for side hustle and social life
You can't work remotely...you must be present
Can Drs actually hit big contracts like Engrs contracts of 100m...1bn...to do what kwanu
Etc

But I still love Medicine and advise anyone who has the brain to go for it....it's worth it.
Well said , but not totally correct esp " problem with medicine " is dependent on how you want to live ur life after graduation . You can work out of hospital just that many of us appreciate that doctor - patient interactions.
There is telemedicine now in which u can consult virtually.
I'm in neurosurgery , the seemingly hardest and most demanding aspect of surgery, yet still create time to hang out with friends
When I'm.on call ,I know im in ,while not on call I chop my life . It depends on individuals. If u have ever met a flexing doctor , u go no say there is time to chop life after work ! that makes life balance

Talking of achievements, what are your indicators of achievement ? Money? prestige? or what?
If it's money, MDs are also doing well, some work for governments and own private hospitals. And I know you can't compare an average pharmacy to an average private hospital.

If it's prestige, Medical doctors are up the ladder.

In government owned clinics, a MD earns twice of what a pharmacist on the same level earns.

if it's job descriptions, Medical doctors are the leaders in the healthcare setting, your opinion about his patient almost doesn't even count and you'll always play a second fiddle in the clinical setting..

We all know some of you wanted to study Medicine and Surgery but couldn't and you've taken solace in your new love and that's understandable and that doesn't mean you shouldn't sound objective.

I'm not the type that likes all this unnecessary comparison because everyone can not be in the same profession BUT because you typed as if Pharmacy has now become the alpha and Omega , I just decided to put some things into perspectives.

the best course to study in University especially in an age where degrees are worthless is medicine. A doctor can never be hungry. there are always jobs for Doctors, and there are always good countries that need doctors and pay well. You want to emigrate to another country?...the best qualification you can have is a medical degree. There is no advanced country in this world that does not need Doctors.

One added benefit is I doubt you need connections to get a job as a doctor in Nigeria as much as in other professions. People automatically accord you a certain reverence or respect one they know you are a doctor......no matter how stoopid you really are ( I know many very foolish stooopid doctors). Doctors are probably the only profession left that still automatically commands some level of genuine respect from society no matter what country you are in the world.....people no longer respect politicians and Religious leaders.
@the bolded, I know a Doctor who got a job via connection.

If you sure your brain can't be expanded to that level

Just come out clean and confess, your parents will consider

You don't need to be exceptionally intelligent to do medicine.

You just need to know how to read.

Their books are voluminous.

People that like reading big novels would do well in medicine.
They would pass their medical exam easily.
