From the write up I can understand that the drivers are only interested in Uber and Taxify increasing the transportation fares so that they will get more money.

We are always selfish and I am very sure that this will fail from ab initio because as they leave the platform of Über and Taxify, more drivers will definitely get onboard and I am 10000% sure that the so called local app can never compete with the established companies

Uber and Taxify are not sleeping. . if you come with a better initiative, they will also raise their standard, and meanwhile, all these illiterate baba taxi drivers will now be doing catch up...

And it may be that some just want to use a poor and illiterate taxi driver along the street to cash out...

Its good to patronize our indigenous companies that is if they can offer quality and effective services as expected.

However, I see this initiative as a subtle way of Lagos state govt to control and regulate the e hailing business in Lagos for purpose of extending the tax net to that sector. Recall, not long ago the state tried persuading uber drivers to pay tax and even went to the extent of stopping some of them on the way.

Nice initiative but so long as it's in Nigeria where dream killer politicians prowl, expect terrible challenges. Take that "gokada" for instance. An overnight policy change by Lagos state government destroyed the outfit in less than two years after its take-off.

Besides and on a lighter note, if it doesn't fall into Buhari's agenda of Fulanization, open grazing or of keeping the rest of Nigeria underdeveloped like his katsina naturalizer home and Niger Republic real home country, there will be problem sooner or later. Remember that it was Buhari that cancelled the Lagos subway train plan of the governor Jakande era.

Its not about ditching and shouting indigenous company

They should not cause hardship for Lagosians with lack of planning

To develop an app is very easy until you have to handle a lot of requests

Well, i wish the company well if its not a one man business

They first developed an app which they couldn't control , now the president collected money from another app companies again

They put lies on Uber and bolt , this weekend alone bolt gave them 15k fuel bonus , Uber also gave them similar bonus , but they will never mention it , just like DSTV indigenous apps can never take over this business , they have all tried and failed , u see Uber , that company pay these drivers well , this their president has done everything to see like a typical Nigerian politician that they settling him , he is making money out of these helpless drivers , under this his union they are not up to 100 drivers , him is not even a driver

Don't mind the greedy and primitive idiots. God knows how much I hate all these retrogressive unionism nonsense. If you don't like Uber or Bolt as a driver or car owner, you're free to quit and join any of these rubbish local ones. Why forcefully drag everyone else in the name of one stupid union?

Trust Nigerians to try to spoil every good thing with their greed, poor attitude and incompetence.

Nigeria finally ditching foreign imperialists.

But some miscreants are having inferiority complex
If it will be effective and affordable, it's a welcome development. The problem we have in this country is much. We love copying others for the sake of financial gains, not for service delivery.

Some years back, fashola stopped commercial bike riders in lagos and we were all clapping our hands, especially when he cited high degree of accidents due to reckless riding which was the truth. A few months later, he introduced his own bike which through his wife, which wasn't even as strong as bajaj boxer marketed by an Indian company located at ilupeju. The Indian company was offering a helmet alongside their bike to buyers too. They had to make it mandatory sef. He now introduced his own helmet. Both the bike and helmet offered by fashola were costing nearly 500k and people protested. It was then they knew the motive of fashola for banning okada...obviously not for the sake of reckless riding but to make money. When they knew they couldn't cope they jejeely left the commercial riders alone. What happened Daarsat today and other like-companies today? That's the issue

As a private car owner driving on those foreign platforms, I say this is a most welcome development.
For those expressing fear and mentioning DStv, your fears are unfounded, this is just an app, it doesn't require the same infrastructure that cable tv requires. The key things we've been demanding: a union, passenger profiling, reduced commission, competitive fares and a human faced customer service for drivers. They conveniently ignored.
Increased fares comes with lower patronage & Uber and the likes understand this. An indigenous app that can be shut down by the government to bring out their own ride-hailing app which in turn will lead to loss of jobs. Lower commissions? Have you forgotten that your Naira does not have value out there?

It's a shame that we have programmers and IT gurus but keep relying on external for the simplest apps.

Calling Uber/Bolt a simple app is premium ignorance.

greed is a major problem of africans. I wounder how people miss the reason for their agitation and in wanting a local company that would give them free rein to do as they please.

20% 15% what's the difference? Why do I need a middle man to hail a cab?
Phone call is more effective.
Imagine a basic service that our parents enjoyed before has become a luxury becos of middlemen and stupid tech.

I prefer the idea of a locally made app, can't pin my hopes on foreign apps owned by foreigners who pay no tax to the local govt.

Because sadly many taxi drivers are dishonest (all over the world) and cannot give clear honest pricing. If they had working meters that would be one thing but even that is beyond many of them, especially in Nigeria. Hence we have third party apps that offer clarity when it comes to pricing and mode of payment.

Good points you've raised. Let's take them one at a time: "Increased fares"- no, there won't be increased fares to the passengers, in fact the contrary would be the case as they will be trying to break into the market. However, they will charge lower commissions which will enable the driver earn a bit more - same strategy Bolt used on uber at a time uber swore nobody could go lower and still break even, Bolt not only broke even, but making stupendous profits. This brings me to your other point "value of naira"- Now, because these foreign companies benchmark their profits in dollars, a weaker naira means they have to be more ruthless to amass more naira that they will change to dollars and remit outside the country. An indigenous company benchmarks its profits in naira and is not under such pressure, if last year's profits were 1m dollars at N300/$ that's N300m. Now, if that same company makes 400m this year, they will consider it a loss compared to last year cos at N500/$ that will be less than the 1m dollars they made last year. But a Nigerian company will consider it a profit.
Next point "Govt can shut down"- this is not exclusive to local companies, govt can shut down any company operating in Nigeria. You can see what's happening with almighty Twitter.
