The advice you'll get from most people here is that school is a scam so you might want to look elsewhere for a useful advice.
Also, Nairaland isn't the best place to get advice on the things you should do with your life. The demographics here is ridiculously biased at most things and many times, you won't see any form of rationality in the comment about such issues.
Go seek advice physically from people who actually have experience about the course instead. I doubt you'll find anything encouraging here

Nope. Not in my opinion, especially in Nigeria where Journalists are treated like crap and hunted like antelopes.

I studied that course and never benefitted from it. Even when I lived overseas and tried working in the field, my accent won't let me

Mass com is not about OAPs and it is one of the most unsaturated professions.. it has so many developing stages and skills.. and it has one of the mose diverse jobs in the world. Also with very Good pay. ... you can work anywhere in the world as a masscom graduate...

The only thing is don't restricts yourself to the degree alone... your opportunity may be limited.

No course is best now in Nigeria. Try to also add one skill to it.

Last time Reno was stating on his FB how Nigerians should look beyond their certificate.
Nobody is discouraging anybody on this , it's a reality visible for all to see.

When I was in school, one my friend used to tell us why we are concentrating our energy on certificate. We didn't understand that he meant.
Recently we met at a friend's wedding, we now got what he was saying.

Education and schooling should be first, but not seen as all.

Those I know that studied Mass Comm. are doing well. Some of them are doing digital marketing...more like modern advertising. You can develop along different paths...journalism, public relations, corporate affairs, advertising etc.

Some universities have created specialisations within the field to make it easier for the students to focus on chosen lines of interest.

In a third world country like Nigeria, Medical courses are always more relevant.

There is a difference between an OAP and a journalist. There are two main type of journalist in Nigeria; investigative journalist and brown envelope journalist. The later is prevalent in our air space while the former is scarce. Whether you like or not Dr Kemi Olunloyo stand out as one of the best journalist in Nigeria.
