The Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed has urged the House of Representatives to include regulation of Twitter in the National Broadcasting Commission Act.

The Minister made the call at the public hearing on a bill to amend the NBC Act organised by the House Committee on Information.

The call by Mohammed is coming on the heels of the restriction of Twitter by the federal government.

“I will want to add, that specifically, internet broadcasting and all online media should be included in this because we have responsibility to monitor content— including Twitter,” he said.

The recommendation by the Minister was opposed by others who spoke at the hearing.

The Executive Director of the Institute of Media and Societies, Akin Akingulu lamented the lack of independence for NBC.

He called for more powers to be stripped from the Minister of Information and the independence of NBC should be guaranteed.

Akingulu also called for the confirmation of the Director-General of the NBC by the National Assembly.

He noted that the inclusion of Twitter and others as “categories of broadcasting services licences will be injurious to the civics space, freedom of expression and media freedom in Nigeria.”

I can see thet Twitter is the causal factor of general insecurity in the country and high level of poverty for it to warrant special legislation.

Foolish Government.

Their agenda exposed… All in the bid to stifle freedom of speech by regulating social and online media…We are having serious economic issues security issues, bandits are on the rampage and this seems to be their top priority?... What a shame !!! They don't want anyone to have the means to talk about all the killings by the herdsmen and the wrongs in this government. The same government that rose to power through social media. The impotent rubber stamped National Assembly will do his bidding. They're Mr. Lifeless’s puppets. There goes your internet! Brace up guys! Tough roads ahead! God help us!

Unlike Facebook they are finding it difficult to locate and arrest anybody who abuse Buhari and any wicked politician on Twitter.
It's obvious Twitter has made it difficult for the government to tamper with freedom of speech and this is giving Lai Mohammed nightmares

Lai is incompetent old ful .....

He got to that position on lies, misyearn and mal-information to the Nigerian public on all social media and national TV during GEJ era and during all PDP tenure as an opposition...

Now this same man under Fulani Hegemony is now clamouring for regulation of free speech..

He now realised Free speech is causing BokoHaram, Bandits, Kidnapping, Infrastructural deficit, Lack of Social amenities and Justice, Inflation and all the problems in Nigeria ...

Chai, so critics don't like to be criticised ...

Jonathan should have locked this man up then for everything he said to his Administration... They always talk otherwise once money and power gets to them ...

Africans can't manage money and power ... 95% misbehave once power and money gets involved !

Lol...

This administration knows the power of free speech & social media since they once used it to their advantage.

Individuals should be responsible for their actions & words, not the platforms they used.
