I made a mistake in my passport number and it has already been attached to an mrv fee. Called the phone number of the embassy and they mentioned that they can't change it because it has been attached to an mrv fee. They said i should print it and take it to mý appointment and explain to the consular office what happened.

Has this happened to anyone before, what did you do?

Since you’ve not booked an appointment at Lagos yet, just go on and book at Abuja. You’re good to go. It doesn’t matter. this information is on their website but I don’t have the link handy.

But I know you can go on and book at Abuja.

Cos I’ve been calling a particular number I saw on the CGI site and no one is taking my calls.

Try to fill another DS 160 if your interview is still beyond three days from now. Then, pick "EMPLOYER IN US" as person paying for your trip since you have fully funded program through GA.

Note: The VO didn't ask who is sponsoring me, he saw everything on the system and checked my I-20 and was satisfied.

Retrieve Application, input your current DS160 ID, then create new application after answering the security questions.
The page will be populated with previous data that you entered. Make the necessary modifications, re-upload your passport photograph. Then submit.
Go to your cgi profile to update your new DS160 ID. If you have already booked an appointment, update the ID also and reprint the appointment confirmation slip.

NB: This should be done atleast 3 days to your appointment date.

Yes, you will be given a different passport number when you apply for the renewal of your old passport. However, if you are aiming for the newly improved passport, your old passport number will be stated on your renewed passport.
