Studying computer science in Nigerian universities is the biggest waste of time.

Courses are being handled by lecturers who have no clue about computers, they only teach theory without practical application.

If you are considering acquiring computer skills you better register in an online program like linda.com or teamtreehouse.com, even udemy is a good choice. In less than a year you become a pro and start earning good money and building your career.

YouTube is better than all Nigerian universities put together undecided

If no be because of certificate and NYSC na youtube sure pass grin

Yes, absolutely it is. But it won't be for you if you rely solely on what you're being taught in school. You need to go outside the scope of the school syllabus and develop yourself.

Learn things that are practical and useful in real life. Don't just be a bookworm. I have seen Computer Science students that can't even operate Ms Word. They are the true definition of hopeless.

Hmm, in an organization I know today

Microbiologists are working in their IT department as ATM machine technicians

Computer science graduates are counting money and recording deposits in their bulk room

Islamic religion study graduates are their marketers and

Political science graduates are their branch managers

Can you guess the organization I’m talking about. . . ?

Yes.
But more importantly, you must have the skills, else an accountant that learned the rudiments of programming from udemy will be way better than you.

Some of you might say having a degree isn't that important anymore, unfortunately that's not true. I don't have time to explain but i hope you find answers to this.

I studied computer science and I thank God I did.

It's still a lucrative course

With computer science knowledge you can work in any domain.

Most companies, firms, government agencies, and all sections of the economy relies directly or indirectly on technologies.

Without White-Hat Hackers, Network Engineers & Admins and Database Admins no financial account is save.

And these set of people must have a fundamental knowledge in computer science. Hence, they're very needed in such sections, And of course, They're paid handsomely

It depends on the school. Computer Science can never lose value. However, most public school CS graduates are poorly trained, that's why someone can ask this shitty question.

A good foundation in CS will always give you an edge irrespective of which career you choose to pursue after school.

The problem with many is that they don't look ahead. Every professsion is lucrative. The only thing is there will always be changes. Many refuse to go with change hence they loose out. Those days petroleum engineering was a good course but the industry evolved and we saw that course morph into subsea engineering, offshore engineering and so on. There are still accountants today but a business analyst may earn more as he combines other skills with accounting. Computer science serves a foundation for datascience, IoT, robotics, blockchain and so many technologies that are invested in now. So it is still lucrative and will continue, it all depends where you are looking.

I think an ICT degree is better. Computer Science is taught better outside the shores of this country than Nigeria.

I'm surprised you would say that. Computer science is now a very broad term, but there are many sub levels of computer science you should be able to profit from if you are good such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, and development of games, data science, development of apps, coding, photo and video editing etc

The opportunities from comp science are larger than most courses, but of course if you are learning the course in Nigeria in an outdated fashion, then you just have to be naturally good or you won't even see head or tail of howbeit can benefit you.
