The Portuguese named it Lagos de Kuramo because it's similar to an island of same name in their country The real name of Lagos according to natives is Eko and it has nothing to do with Lagos de kuramo 1 Like |

Re: The Name Lagos, Was Called Ekonunuame By The Benins by UGBE634: 2:49am On Jul 25, 2021 |
TAO11:It was farm settlement in yoruba, it entered the Bini lexicon and became war camp, what kind of forgery is this bayi. Eko- it is called in that form as the Binis would use it you don't have to twist it for it to make meaning in Benin and Esanland. And it means the same thing in Benin and Esan with several towns and villages scattered across Bini and Esanland with the prefix Eko, Ekosodin etc. Ekonunuame only meant one thing, the camp by the waters and it came from from Edo with the Portuguese text having nothing on it. you might have your Ereko but Eko is Edo and it came from the Binis and was not gotten from the twisted Ereko in yoruba. The context in which they are used does not allow that the Edo Eko was borrowed from the Yoruba. Eko strictly means war camp, what comes to an Edo man's mind the first time is war camp. (eke'niovbio-okhuo ye) interpreted literally to be Eko where the children of war are. children of war in this sense means soldiers, men who are built for war. Everywhere you see the prefix Eko in Bini, Esan and Lagos just know it was a camp a soldier's camp not an anyhow settlement. Ekosodin-a camp of soldiers with Oshodi as the head. Ekonunuame-a soldiers camp beside the water. The meaning is too streamlined in Usage in Edo to have been borrowed from the yoruba 3 Likes 1 Share |

UGBE634: UGBE634:(1) The island was named as eko by the Yorubas themselves. ~ Argue with D’Avezac (1845), p.26. And it has been named as such for centuries before the Binis came. ~ Argue with A.C. Burns (1929), p.44. Conclusion: Lagos island has been named eko for centuries prior to when the Binis came there. The Binis didn’t name Lagos island as eko. (2) Lagos island is alternatively known locally till date as Eko-Aromire (as named after the Awori Chief, Aromire of the Lagos traditions). Moreover, the explorer Ruy de Sequeira came to Lagos in the late-1400s — that is, about 100 years before Benin would have any relationship with Lagos. Ruy de Sequeira — while in Lagos — encountered the local name Eko-Aromi-re (sometimes: Eko-Aromi-sa) which he transcribed as Curamo (sometimes: Korame). This was in the late-1400s. Conclusion: Lagos island has been named eko for centuries prior to when the Binis came there. The Binis didn’t name Lagos island as eko. (3) According to Lagos traditions, the island was first used as an agro-colony (Yoruba: ereko, contraction: eko) by the Awori Chief Aromire. The Binis visited eko centuries after Chief Aromire had flourished. They arrived in the mid/late-1500s, then camped on eko after having gotten the approval of the native owners. The fact of their camping on eko explains the first introduction of this word “eko” into their lexicon, and with the meaning of “camp” among them. Conclusion: Lagos island has been named eko for centuries prior to when the Binis came there. The Binis didn’t name Lagos island as eko. [s]Eko- it is called in that form as the Binis would use it you don't have to twist it for it to make meaning in Benin and Esanland. And so what!? Is that not to be expected? Did I not already educate you (with verifiable evidence) that the Binis encountered this word on the island when they immigrated to Lagos in the mid/late-1500s? How then is it surprising to you that same word then finds it way to parts of Edo state?? Are you serious?? [s]The context in which they are used does not allow that the Edo Eko was borrowed from the Yoruba. Eko strictly means war camp, what comes to an Edo man's mind the first time is war camp. (eke'niovbio-okhuo ye) interpreted literally to be Eko where the children of war are. children of war in this sense means soldiers, men who are built for war. The meaning is too streamlined in Usage in Edo to have been borrowed from the yoruba[/s]Having debunked you on all that I’ve debunked you on, and having also educated you on all I’ve educated you on; there are places by the same name “eko” in different parts of Yorubaland, viz. Ita-Eko in Abeokuta, Oko-Eko in Ijebu, Eko-Ende in Osun state, etc. Cheers! 3 Likes 1 Share |

Whatever history anyone feels he/she believes is largely irrelevant. Edo no be Lagos and we all know the region were Lagos is located and the owners of the state. |

TAO11: My sister thank you, dear. The same these Bini do to Yoruba's claiming they own you guys or your land is the same way they do to other major tribes. I don't understand them at all? It's funny. Your statement and details are precise Jhor. EKO ONI BAJE OO. 4 Likes |

gregyboy: This is the truth biko. Bini's place or kingdom was just a few kilometres. Your Oba was satisfied with that, stop claiming he ruled expansive lands. If he did, there are no festivals or days honouring the Oba, or even a place that venerates him in some way like some parts of Yoruba land or Igbo land, like what they do to their dieties or kings. 1 Like |

ThickSharon123:It’s the minority tribe syndrome, and inferiority complex, mixed with some delusions of grandeur that has led them to such mental disorders. They also LITERALLY say that their king once ruled from Benin city to Congo to Europe, and all the way to Japan. I am not exaggerating. Now you know it’s actually a mental illness. 4 Likes 1 Share |

TAO11: We do not exaggerate about the size of our imperial expansion, it is LITERALLY documented.. You have read about it hence the reason for your jealousy and self torture.. You probably hate your ancestors for not giving you a powerful history like ours but truth is that they (your ancestors) tried and fought hard but were conquered by a MIGHTY POWER, the EDOS. |

TAO11:If one would require IQ to understand you in matter that is as plain like this, then you are the daft one, he did not in anyway penetrate Esan that had strong populated towns precolonially and were close to these areas. rather he went to the extremes of Edo state to raid. UGBE634: Was Benin kingdom restricted to your Oba’s palace alone (and 1 or 2 surrounding places)? NO Now, did Ogedengbe terrorize Benin Kingdom? YES. Did the Oba of Benin plead with him so he doesn’t push further towards the palace? YES Did Benin kingdom dare attack his troops (or country) after he was done with Benin kingdom? UGBE634:Q: Were the places he ravaged Benin Kingdom or not? A: Of course Benin Kingdom. . . Q: Coming from Yorubaland, will he get to your oba’s palace first before those places, or those places first? A: Those parts of Benin kingdom first. . . Q: After he was back to his country, did Benin dare attack him? A: Benin kingdom dares not. . . Q: Why didn’t Benin kingdom later attack him? A: Well they dare not. They begged him out of Benin kingdom in the first place. . . . Once upon a time, a Yoruba cOwArD terrorized the oba of Benin. Order your T-short now. Classical onye-dot. Cheers. 3 Likes
