On July 29th 1966, there was a military coup, led by Northerners, in which the Military head of state, Major General Aguiyi-Ironsi was killed.

For the next 2 days after the death of Ironsi, Nigeria had no President. The Military Governor of the Eastern Region, Lt Col Ojukwu, called Ironsi's deputy and Chief Of General Staff, Brigadier Babafemi Ogundipe

Ojukwu told Ogundipe that in the absence of Ironsi, he(Ogundipe) should declare him President as the highest ranking officer of the Nigerian Army.

Ojukwu also told Ogundipe that should he(Ogundipe) make a nationwide broadcast declaring himself president, he(Ojukwu) would make a broadcast on the Eastern Nigerian Radio 2 hours later declaring total support and allegiance to the administration of Ogundipe.

Ogundipe told Ojukwu over the phone that he had no troops under his command, to which Ojukwu told him to remember he was in Lagos, which was in the South, and not in the North.

Sadly, Ogundipe did not have the backbone to declare himself President. Two days later, the Northerners chased Ogundipe out of Lagos to London and a much junior Lt Col Gowon declared himself president.

Ogundipe was a wise man by refusing to take Ojukwu's advice that would have ended his life and the coupist will still have their way anyway.

Ogundipe had good information and was aware that Ojukwu and Ironsi were part of the January Coup

Ogundipe was not interested in being used and manipulated by Ojukwu and the January Coupists any further especially after the Crisis had blown up in their faces

The January Coup had resulted in a huge backlash from the aggrieved Northern Soldiers and had further led to the deaths of so many more People just because of some Soldiers who had been over ambitious

Where were all the Igbo Officers who were in Charge of all except 2 Military Formations

Why didn't they Counter the Coup

Instead of waiting for Ogundipe whom Ironsi had made sure had no Troops to Command like he had done with all the other Yoruba infantry Officers

In military since ancient times no soldier deserts his post and runs away. Talkless of the most senior officer in the army. It's all about choice. Stand for the honour of your uniform or run and Ogundipe chose to run

The person who stood for his military honour what happened at the end?He later abandon his honour and went to exile.
Ogundipe choose the part of honour that avoided war in his homeland and by so doing saved his region from destruction and death that we witnessed in the East.

This is not about being a coward!

Ogundipe realised that no junior officers were in his support! When he gave an order to make a safe landing for Ironsi, the officers sent were ambushed. When he tried to send other officers, they declined! So he sensed mutiny.

Let me remind you.You can't declare yourself without internal support. Obasanjo was able to declare himself because TY Danjuma and Sheu Musa Yaradua were in his support. They emboldened him.

Did you know that Murtala and other junior officers were looking for him before they could ask Yakubu Gowon to take over? They wanted him to hand over peacefully. They never wanted him to assume the position.

So when Ogundipe realised that he was not safe again, he left the country in the midnight. Until then Gowon was able to become Head of State.

How would he bring war to his people? Can the North fight both the East and West at the same time? Ok he didn't want to bring war to his people but he was willing to bring war to Eastern Region and partake in the massacre of millions of lives. A case of what is good for the goose is not good for the gander.

You are absolutely right that he was not part of the coup and that the most senior officer in the military must not necessarily take over power. So why become a spokesperson of the an administration that humiliated you and hounded you out of office? Why didn't he reject Gowon's position of Nigerian High Commissioner to UK by telling Gowon that he was not going to be a part of government that hijacked power and subjugated and oppressed Yoruba military? That singular act would have made him a man of integrity and moral courage.
